The announcement of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s retirement apparently surprised the coach, who had just found out about this. But he understood that the decision was made because Khabib really loved his family, especially his mother.
Khabib Nurmagomedov announced his retirement after defeating Justin Gaethje in the main game ‘UFC Fight Island’ in Abu Dhabi. He retired with a 29-0 record.
“I just found out when he delivered his speech. I immediately gawked. I was like, ‘What ?!’. I mean, he has shown the expression with the best flat face on the planet,” said Javier Mendez , Khabib coach, told Australian media Submission Radio .
“This is all really a big surprise for me. In the end his mother’s plan came true. Her mother’s wish was for her not to fight without her father and that’s what she did. And that must be respected,” he continued, as reported by RT,com .
Javier Mendez then stated that he understood Khabib Nurmagomedov’s decision to retire even though he was still the dominant figure in the world he was currently in.
“This sport is not a long-lived sport, some come in, some come out. And he comes out when he feels the time is right for himself and his family,” said Mendez.
“For myself, of course, I still want him to continue until 30-0 as his father wanted him to. But he loves his mother and family so much that it is time for him to (retire).”
“And financially he is ready. So he is not a greedy person. And you know exactly, as I know, he will be paid a huge payoff if he continues one more fight.”
“But of course for him, behind everything he does, family has a greater meaning than wealth,” said Javier Mendez about Khabib Nurmagomedov.
