Many would argue that consumerism makes the world go round. Economies can boom through the money we spend on goods and services. Likewise, the rise in demand and desire for newer products can incentivize innovation and advancements.

However, we can’t ignore the ugly side and negative consequences. That’s where the Anticonsumption subreddit comes in. This online group of 1.5 million members is here to remind us that too much of anything is never healthy.

We’ve collected some photos from the group that feature facts about the current state of consumerism in society. This could be an eye-opening read for you.

Companies need to make a larger and larger profit every year in order to be considered “successful.” The lengths they’re going to to trick consumers into buying more is starting to get ridiculous. This isn’t sustainable.

Sadly, living in a small rural town where we only have one Walmart and very few retail stores, we often cannot find what we need in a local store. So we are forced to use Amazon. At least with Amazon, there is some recourse if you receive the wrong item.

SO then we also agree gas should be priced more realistically and the 300+% profit the cartel makes on everey watered down gallon is excessive. And when we buy gas, that is exactly what we chould be getting. It was proven 50 years ago that ethanol destroys every component of the fuel system including the engine itself. Todays pendil neck geeks aren't old enough to remember gasahol from the 70's. It's also a proven fact alcohol cuts MPG so it's not cutting emisions like they want everyone to believe. Want to cut emissions? Make the oil cartel and EPA keep their nose out of the auto industry and give the auto makers the greenlight to produce the prototype engines they've been building for 50 years that get 200+mpg

We often refer to previous decades as “simpler times,” and there is no exaggeration here. People were more content with living within their means, not worrying about purchasing anything other than their basic necessities. This was especially true before the 20th century, according to historian Dr. Kerryn Higgins

“Frugality and thrift were more appropriate to situations where survival rations were not guaranteed,” Dr. Higgins wrote in an article for the BBC.

This is a typical example of political tactics. People get annoyed by paper straws and don't pay attention to the big picture, i.e. the companies. Individuals are accused/blamed for littering so that big companies can continue littering the oceans and overfishing with their bycatch.

Most plastics produced aren't recyclable, but consumers are still forced to pay for recycling programs, trucks, facilities and added taxes, even though over 95% ends up in landfills. Tax companies 100% on non-recyclable plastics, and plastic use would likely drop verry quickly.

This one is unfair: I can't prevent fishermen from discarding nets, but I *can* decide what to do with my own plastic consumption. People see this and (just look at the comments) get angry at the part they *could* play. "If fishermen can do this, why shouldn't I" - and yay, more littering!

According to Dr. Higgins, it all changed in the 1920s when industry leaders realized that “mass production is only profitable if its rhythm can be maintained.” She quoted a passage from a 1928 book written by public relations pioneer Edward Bernays, which stated that businesses “cannot afford to wait until the public asks for its product.”

By “maintaining constant touch” through advertising, propaganda, and other means of mass communication, industries at the time believed that having a continuous demand could be profitable.

Yep. Fix it, it's missing from the pyramid. Part of the zipper on a hoodie that I've had for over twenty years broke and a local sewing shop was able to fix it. The fan was a little slow to start and a dab of WD-40 fixed the problem. I do tend to get attached to my stuff though and I deeply mourn a shirt whose material just gave in to old age. I even call my phone a rescue phone because it's someone's old work phone. When they say that people are a little complicated, that's exactly how I want to be complicated.

Pretty soon, the powers that be exploited the wants and desires of consumers, describing them as “almost insatiable.” It motivated them to create an endless cycle of “newer wants” as fast as the buying public was satisfied.

Agent Smith to Morpheus (The Matrix): I’d like to share a revelation during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you’re not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague, and we are the cure.

If every area would build a recycle center where peoiple sort all trash and only degradables go to the landfill, people would have jobs that don't require a PHD and we'd have almost no trash polluting the ground. But then there's the American corporate belief that only a feew certain plastics can be recycled etc. While other countries are showing the woprld that they are all recycleable in some way.

this is not an "economic system" problem. it's hard wired into our DNA. we spent millions of years evolving during hard times/shortages. We hoard. It's also the reason we overeat.

Most plastics produced aren't recyclable, but consumers are still forced to pay for recycling programs, trucks, facilities and added taxes, even though over 95% ends up in landfills. Tax companies 100% on non-recyclable plastics, and plastic use would likely drop verry quickly.

It may no longer be relevant to ask how we got to the current state of consumerism. Perhaps, the better question to ask would be, “What can we do to break the cycle?” According to finance writer and minimalism advocate Joshua Becker, having less desire to upgrade our lives constantly is one approach.

“Only an intentional rejection of excessive consumerism can silence the call to constantly upscale lifestyle norms,” Becker wrote in an article for Forbes.

People outside Canada can probably find her films by asking for them at their local libraries, especially if they have Kanopy or Hoopla. Fortunately for this planet, it won't come to that. We entered the 6th Mass Extinction Event, which started approximately 12,000 years ago. This time around, we won't survive. Last time, only between 2,500 and 250,000 humans made it through that extinction event; this time, the Goddess is going to sweep this planet clean of us and any trace of us. A generous act always goes a long way. Not only does it help the individual in a significant way, but it also brings a sense of gratification for the person who does the good deed. But as Becker also points out, it’s also an effective way to reject consumerism.

“When we begin rejecting the temptation to spend our limited resources on ourselves, our hearts are opened to the joy and fulfillment found in giving our personal resources to others,” he stated.

I will never understand the need to do something that takes way from “anything”. When I go for a trail walk, I never even leave a banana peel. The first ones up Everest it would have been huge accomplishment. They did it blindly, guessing the weather from notes. The explores that got it wrong died. Today you know everything about the mountain. You have weather data that would never have even been conceived with the first achievement. You go up it and “DUMP” your junk at the summit? You have the money to hire all the people to carry your JUNK up. I think people like this should have an “*” with their name to let others know the trash that they really are. You DID NOT ACHEVE ANYTHING other than showing how little you care about anything other than you. Yes, it is dangerous, but do you know what is more dangerous, daring, noteworthy, and inspiring? Luckily, we have the Too-good-to-go app and our grocery store has a corner with a fridge and shelves with stuff that nears the expiry date for 30 to 50% of the original price. Throwing away food, especially if an animal was killed for it or could not live the life it should be, is a crime.

Disposing of most of it is due to stupidity. I have cage free eggs I've had in fridge since April (this is August). I have not washed them but they are in a plastic container with a lid. I test each one before I use it to be sure its still viable and so far so good. THEN I wash and use. I keep moving an old container of yogurt every time I check the eggs. Stale bread can be toasted or throw in microwave for a few second to rejuvenate it. Never white processed bread. Healthy, refrigerated, still in wrapper.

Aside from Cuckoo Magoo's comment below, America will indeed cause the destruction of humanity. Trump and his minions are willing participants. If that giant orange fecal head has the anything remotely divine on his side, I'm the real Queen of Britain.

What most people don't know is that the world can be fed thousands of times over but they store a lot of it so the prices can stay high. Lack of anything forces high prices. God forbid they think of giving starving people the means to stay alive so they can stay rich.

Doubt it. We're not a member of the U.N. courts system. They can scream crimes against humanity, it's not applicable to us. I fully expect to see the U.N. kicked out of New York and the country by the time Trump is finished. The U.N. costs us millions, maybe billions, of dollars to support. You know how he feels about spending money on things that he doesn't like. For example, he likes the idea of a "beautiful" ball room being attached to the White House.

I refuse to feel guilty for owning one labubu. My friend fell in love with them, we talked within our friend group and accidentally everyone had a different favourite. So we ordered a packet with all six of them (which came considerably cheaper than separate blind boxes). Also it was months ago so they were not so popular yet and cost way less than now. Now we each have a cute handbag mascot to cheer us up. It's not the most responsible or clever thing to buy, but it makes me smile in the morning when dragging my tired a*s to work, so that't worth it. So all labubu owners aren't crazy and willing to spend hundreds, some are just normal people enjoying their tiny childish luxury in life.

That's a nice info to get. I also love how my bus app tells how much carbon dioxide I've saved by using the bus and not a car. This year I've apparently saved 249,55 kg. I love the natural impact, but the most essential thing is the money saved. I can't even count how much it would cost to have a car, keep it updated and insured, and then fuel to drive about 30 km. per day. Now I can buy bus card for 55€ and get an unlimited bus use for a month.

The problem with this is the library borrower most likely (never say never) would not have bought the books instead of borrowing them. Part of going to the library is being able to read books I don't want to buy - or more to the point don't want to buy and have - so its a win-win for me. I've borrowed several books this year but only bought one, which I knew I wanted to keep. Perhaps this receipt should say "If you purchased these books it would have cost you XYZ".

Could A Universal Remote Control Turn Off Those Damned Screens?

Where do you live? I don’t see them with all their lights on. Nighttime lighting can create a hella health problems- and it’s mostly ineffective for crime prevention since it gives potential thieves, etc adequate light to carry out their plans. It would be better if motion sensors turned on lights inside the house. I understand why public places have lights but dimming them would be nice. Motion detectors in public places could be a problem because turning them on could be seen as announcing that someone had recently walked by.

Bike noisemaker packaged for retail hanging on a store display, highlighting excessive consumerism in product design.

Saw this at Target today. NINE DOLLARS for a clothespin? Stuff like this ramps up my anti-capitalist/anti-consumption feelings so much.

It DID inspire me to put a few things back on the shelf that I can probably find at yard sales or second hand stores instead, so I guess, thanks Target for the obscene cash grab attempt.

Something that regularly blows my mind is how much money people will spend on mobile app games. They're designed to be addictive, and also designed so that even though you can technically play for free, you're unable to actually advance in the game without spending money. They falsely advertise "discounts" and "limited time deals" so you think you're getting some sort of bargain. People literally wind up spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars on imaginary items.

Yes! I do this with my contact lenses (obviously not something I can skip to buy), but I use 2 websites. When I order a 6months stock on one site and don't re-order after 6 months, guess what, after 7-8 months they send me a 40% discount on the contacts I need! Worked for 10 years now...

The Amount Of Remaining Contents Before Bottles Stop Pumping And They Are Disposed Of

Hand holding a large Aveeno Daily Moisturizing body lotion bottle in a bathroom with bright vanity lights.

I don’t know how many people simply throw out their lotion bottles once lotion stops pumping from certain containers. We ourselves take the time remove the pump and scoop out as much as we can. I can only imagine the number of other bottles simply tossed out. Someone please engineer a way to get the most out of these bottles

I wish you could just buy the bottle once and then get it refilled somewhere instead of having to buy new every time. I know there are places that do this but they are very few and far between and are more for food items than toiletries.

There are ones that do it for hygiene and laundry products in Melbourne, but I live 1.5hrs from there. It's really annoying. I have tried a liquid deoderant that I could ge refills of by post, and then you return the empty pouches, but that uses so much fuel to deliver, it's no better off.

I just put them aside for a bit, start a new bottle, then when there is enough room, remove the pumps, and tip the old bottle over the new. If you balance it right, it will drain all the remaining contents of the old bottle into the new bottle and you can continue this process forever. I do it for anything in this type of bottle. Even if the lotions are not brand specific. Works just fine. Just be sure to keep an extra pump or two because those do eventually wear out.

Funnel! Use them instead of trying to balance things. I keep funnels in my kitchen and laundry for adding the concentrated stuff and then diluting them.

I have adapters that you screw on the tops after you throw the pumps away and use the bottle upside down to squeeze the contents out. Not expensive and effective.

Where do you get these? I unscrew the pump and turn the bottle upside down when I want to use remaining product, but this is cumbersome and time-consuming.

Use a plastic straw to extend the pump's feeder tube all the way to the bottom. If you're feeling especially crafty, buy a length of plastic tubing at the hardware store. Cut the length you need to extend the feeder tube to a corner of the container. You'll get almost all of it. Then just cut the container open when the product is too low. I've taken out tablespoon's of lotion and just put them into some aluminum foil, folded it over and used that until it was gone.

Yep, which is why I turn the bottle upside down, let the extra settle for a while then pour it into the next bottle once it's emptied a little. I get every scrap, and if corporations start making lotion bottles that can't be opened, I'll stop buying their product immediately.

They make a rig you can connect two bottles together with, and have the product from the top bottle drain into the bottom bottle. You can do it raw, but it can be messy if the top bottle falls off.

Prime Day Is A Massive Scam

Prime Day deal showing discounted consumerism with a headset priced at $299 and free delivery options available.

I was looking at this speaker online at BestBuy, Amazon and other retailers two weeks ago. Everywhere had this item listed for $350 exactly with no special sale or anything. Now for “Prime Day” today, they are claiming this item is usually $400 base retail - which is a lie. They are raising the price and dropping it down near normal levels and calling it a sale. Ridiculous.

Never look at the list price, it is always fake. I have an add-on on my browers from Keepa and that shows the history of the prices. when it was Prime day at least half of the offers were fake because they raised the prices beforehand. This way I only buy a product I need when I see the price is at its lowest. I don't understand why it is not illegal in the USA to have false advertising. And the tiny island I live has a store that always has 50 or 70% off. Coincidentally half of is the same price where you can buy it everywhere else. Unfortunately a lot of people fall for this scam, thinking they are saving a lot of money.

Kohl's is famous for this. Their original price on everything is the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). NOTHING is sold at this price. They keep dropping the price on the item, making you think you are getting some wild sale, when the final price is what the thing should have been selling at to begin with! Scammers.

Here's my favorite library vs LinkedIn story. LinkedIn bought out another database (forgot the name) and sent out notices that they were going to require all users to create a LinkedIn account before they could access the database. This would give them patrons' contact information, personal data, and track what they were learning. That's a HUGE red flag for libraries; we protect patron information. So a bunch of California libraries called their bluff and said "ok, we won't renew our subscriptions then" and put the word out to other libraries. LinkedIn backed down and decided they really didn't need all that personal information to make their database work.

I mean, yeah, that's what credit ratings are for - to measure how good you are about paying off debt. If you pay the card off every month, you still go into debt when you make purchases with it, but because you pay off that debt when it's due, you don't pay interest. Credit score boost at no cost to you.

I dont know about this. It is a question what it is worth to me. If i find it to expensive for the content i get, i cancel it but if i am ok with the price i keep it. Everybody has to decide for themselves but if i think about what money i spend in the old days to rent a dvd, it is still pretty cheap

Something I noticed: the Psych DVDs have an extra couple minutes play time in some episodes than streaming ones, sometime jokes seem out of no where but if you watch the DVD an earlier scene prime cut makes the joke hilarious. How much history have they already changed?

The amount of waste in consumer products just for packaging is absurd. Socks have plastic hangers that often have multiple rows, everything has the plastic bits to hold items together as well as attaching price tags, the price tags themselves (unless they provide information about technical athletic wear), twist ties and plastic formed to the shape of the product… I often think about the mass of those things actually used.

I have a glass (silicone covered) and a metal water bottle I bought from Kmart for less than $10 each about 9 years ago. Both still going strong and not ridiculous sizes like these, so I can actually carry them around with me pretty easily. The metal one has scratches on the outside from me dropping it so many times, but it hasn't affected it (I saw a kid have a meltdown recently because their Stanley bottle got a tiny scratch on it).

We have two options at my church (because it's a combined Uniting & Anglican church) for communion. The 'shared cup' (though this was not used for a few years during Covid) or individual glasses (like small shot glasses). Both get washed after use and reused. Speaking as someone with debilitating arthritis and disfigured hands: first, if you really think I am the target market here, it's very obvious you don't have any disability whatsoever. If you did, ypu would know this kind of thing doesn't exist in any other type of product. I have issues doing a lot of basic activities and accessible food is not one of the pain points. But there aren't any other products in packaging catering to my needs. So somehow you think food companies are the only ones who think about disabled people and market to us? Either they are just extra generous, or perhaps the disabled are such a big market share as to make it worthwhile.? Seriously, that's what you think? Pre chopped foods have nothing whatsoever to do with the disabled. It's not designed with us in mind, it's not us who primarily buy it, we are not only NOT the target demographic, we're not factored into the market in any way whatsoever.

Are Tariffs Actually A Good Thing?

Person making skeptical faces in a meme highlighting tariffs raising costs and consumerism impact on junk products

Are tariffs are actually a good thing?

So yeah, economies will spiral out of control and people on the low end of the earning spectrum will suffer disproportionately, but won’t all this turmoil equate to less buying/consumption across the board?

Like, alcohol tariffs will reduce alcohol consumption, steel and aluminum tariffs will promote renovating existing buildings and reduce the purchase of new cars, electronics and oil refining are both expected to raise in costs. What about this is a bad thing if the overall goal is to reduce consumption and its impact on the environment?

Also, it’s worth noting that I am NOT right wing at all and have several fundamental problems with America’s current administration, but I feel like this is an issue they stumbled on where it won’t have their desired effects (localization of our complex manufacturing and information industries) but whose side effects might be a good thing for the environment (obviously this ignores all the other environmental roll backs this admin is overseeing)

Yeah, the problem is that tariffs don't just apply to one or two things. Well, sometimes they do, but in more cases it's class of product. Soooo even those. new building materials and inventions get hit with them in one form or another. I'm a bit indifferent about the steel/aluminum tariff since I work at a ductile iron foundry and when people can't find cheaper grades of steel they re-evaluate other possible material for suitability (I'll save you the sales pitch for ductile iron, suffice to say it is a suitable replacement from some grades of steel), but even there there are still applications that specifically need aluminum or steel until we get to the point that a replacement exists so those costs go up (not to mention that aluminum takes ridiculous energy to refine,, so foundaries feel the impact when more refinement happens on US soil through energy prices. Those apply to everyone, too.) Tariffs CAN be used effectively to balance things out, but there's always a cost.

It would work if countries had any cojones/ovaries and stood up to the US and raised their tariffs and boycotted US products. However, US would probably just nuke everyone if they did. Sort of like how Europe was afraid of Hitler in 1939. Or how Middle East countries are afraid of Nettieboy

I don't think that's quite the point. It's like making a YouTube video about something you're passionate about vs making a YouTube video about the same thing for money. That's why most media sucks. It's bland to appeal to the most people.

Our local district and most I'm aware of have a policy of phones in lockers or, better yet, none at all on property as office phones still work just fine. I hate it when people deliberately post fake comparisons like this. The two jars are not the same product. The website is printed on the label, doesn't take long to find that they make lots of sauces, some of them in the larger size with the mason-jar lid, some of them in the slightly smaller size. Oh, and the screw on lid on that one is still perfectly good for reuse when you're making your own jam or whatever.

They are pins you can attach to clothing or backpacks. Each pin in the collection is colored like a beloved Disney character while being shaped like a Disney world trash can, where they belong along with the person asking $200 for them.

My Bookshelf Of 27 Books After Selling/Donating About 2000 Books

Stack of colorful books with decorative items on top, illustrating the impact of consumerism through book collection.

I realised it’s READING that makes me happy, not OWNING an unnecessary amount of books. 📚

I’m not going to stop owning physical books completely (I love the feeling of paper books), but for every new book I get, an old one will have to go.

I buy most of my books from charity shops. Once I've read them, if I'm not going to read them again, I donate them back to the charity shops.

If out of 2,000 books only 27 are essential to you, then you did book buying wrong.

It broke my heart when I moved to this small apartment, how many books I had to give up because there's simply no space. I only own about 200 books now. But that number is slowly climbing and somehow, I'm finding places to keep them.

I have a favourite second hand book shop. Once I've read a book I bought there, they take it back in part exchange for another one I buy. Two of my grandkids love going there too and they read more as a result.

Wouldn't a library be better for that sort of reading habit?

I love books too much! That said, I can also score some pretty awesome titles from Goodwill for $1 that belonged to folks who did a culling like this.

If I re-check out a library book more than three times, I order my own copy from a local bookstore. I only buy books I've already read.

You fell for the belief that you have to look in 2025 the same way you did when you were 10 years younger. Just let your body age and don't give a s**t about it that it shows naturally, and you don't need all that stuff. Simples!

Nobody is telling me I need make up. I wear it because I wince when I look in the mirror because I’m ugly. I started wearing eye makeup ages ago because I dance and didn’t like to see my eyes faded away when I’d see them in the mirrors there.

I’m too old for that shít. I don’t even wear makeup except for special occasions any more. Only thing I use on the regular is a supermarket-brand skin cleanser.

Yes, by all means, praise the guy who says "Social Security is a Ponzi scheme" all the while being SS taxed on only the first $177k of income. The Ponzi scheme is he's being taxed on only the first $177k.

Otherwise, let's see... There's a lot of space, the garage is bigger than your home, it's far enough from the property entrance that you can't even see it at first, a big TV isn't the most prominent thing in the living room, and....?
