Everyone’s winter is a little different. Some take out their skis and hit the mountains, while others put on their blades and take to icy lakes, build snowmen in the backyard, or watch their dogs pretend to be moles.
So we decided to check out what the season looks like this time around and collected a bunch of pictures shared from across the globe.
From peaceful landscapes to playful everyday moments caught in the cold, these images capture the many moods of winter—minus the frozen fingers.

Our indoor cat 'escaped' one -10 morning when I opened the door to see if I needed to shovel. Left her out there for the 15-20 min it took before I left for work. She never did that gain if the 'ground was white'.
That hibernating (I think) adolescent aspen tree must be very confused at why there is a cat shaped mass on it!

Sometimes the weather can be confusing. You get a cold week at the beginning of December, followed by a warm one that melts any snow that has fallen.
But did you know that people can’t agree on when winter starts?
One group says it begins on December 1 and ends on the last day of February.
Meteorologists use fixed three-month periods for each season because it makes year-on-year comparisons easier.

Others, however, claim winter starts on December 21, a time known as the winter solstice, which is the shortest day of the year. If you follow this line of thought, the season then runs until the vernal, or spring, equinox, which in 2026 falls on Friday, March 20.
The natural rotation of Earth around the sun forms the basis of the astronomical calendar, in which seasons are defined by two solstices and two equinoxes. Earth’s tilt and the sun’s alignment over the equator determine both the solstices and the equinoxes.
Winter In Kyoto, Japan
I spent a year in Japan when I was a kid. The most magical thing I ever experienced in my life was attending the snow festivals. Blew my mind! Everyone should get a chance to see it, just once!

The astronomical calendar is how humans have organized their lives and civilizations for thousands of years. Long before the invention of the mechanical clock, our ancestors looked to the skies to understand their time and place on the planet.
By observing the sun’s changing path, people could predict when harsh weather was due to arrive, when it was a good time to hunt certain animals, which foods were in season, and so on.

I'm on a quest to see northern lights! Chased them to Milwaukee, WI (US) when they were dipping in the states only to not see them and also to not really want to go to Milwaukee again.
You’ve got to come to Canada .. I’ve camped under them in the summer in Quebec and snowmobiled under them in Thunder Bay in the winter … AMAZING … 🤙
Load More Replies...He Hates Snow
My childhood cat hated snow with a passion. There was only one thing he hated even more: the litter box. Whenever there was snow on the ground, he refrained from going until it wasn't to be contained anymore, then mutated to a bunny doing 2m hops to the nearest safe tree (which means: with no snow under it, preferably the conifers at the edge of our backyard), did whatever needed doing as quickly as possible, and then jumped back with the same bunny hops. It was hilarious. :D
Mine gave up as submitted to " the box" when she couldn't dig in ground to cover it up. She still stops, looks around as if she can't believe her lot in life, the reluctantly climbs in. Jusmos out as soon as done, kitty litter flying.
Load More Replies...The other day it snowed. Like, maybe an inch. My little furball bounded out, took one look at the snow, noped out of the entirety of the outside world. Stood there in the doorway mewing pathetically until she got some consolation crunchies.
Because Earth travels around the sun in 365.24 days, an extra day is needed every four years, creating what we call a leap year.
This also causes the exact dates of the solstices and equinoxes to vary from year to year. Additionally, the elliptical shape of Earth’s orbit around the sun means the lengths of the astronomical seasons can vary, lasting anywhere from about 89 to 93 days.
To make it easier to consistently compare climatological statistics for a particular season from one year to the next, meteorological seasons were born.

We adopted a young Corgi and a young Pomsky (Pomeranian Husky). Both love to catch the snow when my husband is shoveling around the house. Quite the game of catch to see them leap up with such excitement. :)
One Of The Birdies I'm Feeding
I love the noise these birds make. The chirp sound is their name. It almost sounds like tiny tongue-clicking sometimes when you walk past a bush with a few of them hiding in it on a sunny winter day.
I get lots of different tit birds, blues,great,long-tailed also black caps, wrens,Robins, blackbirds, starlings, goldfinches, jackdaws, woodpeckers, occasionally Jay's,lots of sparrows the odd pheasant and a quail, and a regular sparrowhawk. They all spread the word when the food is topped up.
Ooooh having a jay in the garden would make my week! I know there are some around but they keep it to the local park, beautiful birds!
Load More Replies...We all have a sense of what each season is like. The cold and dark of winter ends in spring, a time of colorful rebirth. Temperatures climb through summer, the brightest and hottest time of year, before giving way to autumn, with its crisp air and falling leaves. Then the cycle repeats — or at least it’s supposed to.
Last year, scientists published a study arguing that human-driven climate disruption is altering Earth’s annual rhythms so significantly that the characteristics and everyday experience of the seasons are becoming increasingly disconnected from their traditional definitions.

It only looks beautiful for minute. All that snow in NYC is wet. And then it gets churned up by feet and cars until it's brown or grey. And you have to walk on ice to get by it. Trust me it turns disgusting.

To make sense of these emerging patterns, the researchers propose changing the way we look at the calendar and outline a few new concepts that they believe have recently grown in prominence:
- Emergent seasons – entirely new seasonal patterns that didn’t previously exist in a given region.
- Extinct seasons – traditional seasons that have effectively disappeared or become unrecognizable.
- Arrhythmic seasons – disruptions to the expected timing and duration of seasonal cycles.
- Syncopated seasons – irregular fluctuations in the intensity or character of seasons.

Some of these ideas might already sound familiar. The study cites other research showing that summers are getting hotter and longer, primarily due to climate change. Winters are also becoming shorter and warmer, while springs are arriving earlier in the year. “Hurricane seasons” in the Atlantic and Pacific are becoming longer, and “wildfire seasons” in California now last almost all year.

American here. Praying everyday for a miracle that will rid our country of that horrible orange man. Greenland, I am on your side as are a lot of us here.
I'm quite sure that if the orange shitgibbon is dumb enough to actually slap on tariffs, then the countries affected will (eventually) do the same. There's a simpler solution we can do today - just stop buying American stuff. Maybe, just maybe, it might sink in to the minds of *other* senators that tanking international trade is, well, kind of dumb?
I am torn because I don't want Europe to have economic pain, but the more expenses Trump inflicts on Americans the madder they will be when they go to the polls in November.
