Kids and dogs can be great friends with the right connection and a little common-sense training. Children can learn valuable lessons about how to care for other living things, be responsible, kind and patient.
Dogs of course get an energetic playmate who can keep them entertained for hours on end, however they can find kids annoying at times too, so it’s important to teach respect! Things like personal space, the right kind of petting and leaving the dog to eat in peace are important messages to get across to your kids, because nobody wants to risk getting a little bite. Like us, pups can only take so much and are prone to snap if they are pushed too hard.
However, kids and dogs have so much in common that this is a pretty rare occurrence. They are much more likely to be the bestest buddies in the world! The unconditional love and loyalty from a dog is unrivalled. They spend their entire lives by your side, which is a relatively short period of time in human years, and you'd be lucky to even get half the compassion and respect from another human in 80 or so years of living. Deep...but true for many.

Not to be a party pooper, but please don't let your babies sleep on their stomachs. This increases the risk of sudden infant death. Always put them down on their backs. A pediatrician.

Insight people. He is NOT covering a cold baby. He simply smells poop. He is a Lab and will eat ANYTHING! He is instinctively covering the poop to eat later.

When I was a little kid, my teenage babysitter always brought her dog with her. She was a really smart dog. She would come to bed with me, which was a great way of getting me to bed at a reasonable time! I bet the girl felt a lot more secure with her dog there as well. Wish I could remember their names.

Many people now a days forget that years ago every house with a baby also had a dog, they called them RATTERS. The dog's slept under the baby's crib and killed rats trying to bite the babies. Sounds like a good trade to me.

Reminds me of when I got my dog as a puppy. My daughter was still cosleeping with me (she was about 2 1/2) and he would sleep in between the 2 of us. He now only sleeps with me, but he checks on her every night to make sure she is sleeping soundly
