Woman Finds Out The Name She Gave Her Baby Has A Bad History In Her Family, Refuses To Change It
Naming a baby is a big task: it’s the moniker they’re going to live with for the rest of their lives. According to a poll by BabyCenter, one-third of parents make that decision during the second trimester. It’s important that parents take some time to consider many names and consult with family members and sometimes even with baby name consultants.
This young family chose to name their baby daughter after the husband’s loving grandmother. What they didn’t know was that the name also belonged to a person who was the wife’s father’s affair partner. After the grandparents found out about the name, the years-long secret came out and threatened to destroy the family. So, the wife had a choice to make: rename the baby or lose contact with her parents.

A spouse never forgets infidelity, and learning about a parent’s betrayal can be traumatic for adult children
At first, this story seems to be about a baby’s name. But as it unfolded with each update, it became clear that this is about a family struggling to stay together after discovering a disturbing secret. And the keeper of that secret wasn’t the father alone – the mother was just as guilty for covering for her husband.
Not many couples and families survive infidelity. Initially, 60%-75% of couples stay together and try to make things work, but resentment builds over the years. If couples don’t address the cheating and just “try to forget it,” only one in five remain together after five years.
57% of couples who seek therapy and repair their relationship after infidelity stay together after the five-year mark, and 77% of couples who never had any trouble with cheating are still happy after five years.
When the couple has kids, the children, too, get dragged into the mess. Even if they don’t find out about the infidelity when it happens, as is the case in this story, learning about the infidelity of a parent can be traumatizing. In a survey of children who have uncovered a parent’s past infidelity, 75% said they felt “betrayed” by the parent who cheated.
So the OP’s and her sister’s reactions are completely valid. Children often view such actions as the parent breaking “an unspoken promise to their children: to be part of a loving family whose members are forever loyal to each other.”
The problem is not just that the name “Annabelle” will remind everyone of the father’s infidelity. Family members don’t forget that kind of betrayal anyway. What’s more concerning are the circumstances around the father’s infidelity.
“He tore the family apart,” the woman wrote in the comments
Some readers thought it was the father’s duty to make things right: “You’re in a horrible spot”
Others thought the woman was selfish for not thinking about the trauma her mother would have to relive upon seeing her granddaughter
“Telling mom to ‘Get over it’ is a big request,” others observed

The affair partner might have been a grooming victim
It’s highly probable that the father groomed one of his students when he started an affair with her. His excuse that it “happened after graduation” is on par with what those who engage in misconduct with minors say. Essentially, what they mean is that “nothing happened” while she was still his student, although he most likely engaged in grooming patterns.
Academic research shows that 11.7% of K-12 students report experiencing some kind of intimate misconduct committed by the school staff. This includes things like inappropriate comments (11%), sending explicit messages, photos, and videos (0.6%), touching (0.9%), and even intimate acts (0.4%). According to the same study, most perpetrators are teachers, and a whopping 89% are male.
The relationship between a student and a teacher doesn’t progress like a regular one. The offender teacher often shows the student special treatment, gives them gifts, food, or even money. The saddest part is that the students often don’t report these things (only 4%-6% do), thinking that no one believes them since they’re only kids, or because the teachers seldom face consequences or disciplinary action.
It’s no surprise that learning such a fact about your father might drive a person to cut contact with him. The situation is bad all around for the OP, as many commenters observed. Her father might be a criminal, and her mother covered up his misconduct with a student and even stayed with him for 10 years. It’s hard to imagine how a family moves on from something like that.
Commenters felt less sorry for the mother: “[She] helped him hide it all”

Op was NTA. I’m glad her mother decided to act like an adult. Names aren’t claimed forever by someone else. But the real issue is the dad was very problematic and mom has been spackling over it for years.
