Planet Fitness Sees Stock Drop Amid Controversy Over Woman Banned For Filming Trans Gym-Goer

Planet Fitness stock dramatically dropped after controversy ensued over membership cancellation following an incident where a female gym-goer photographed a transgender woman using the women’s locker room.

Planet Fitness, an American chain of fitness centers, underwent a financial blow earlier this week after one of its gyms located in Alaska canceled the membership of angered customer Patricia Silva.

The company’s stock price, which traded at a monthly high of $66.92 on March 7, plummeted to a low of $56.46 on Tuesday (March 19), The New York Post reported.

The price drop followed an incident where Patricia encountered a “man in [the] women’s locker room shaving.”

Planet Fitness’ stock dropped after canceling a customer’s membership after she photographed a trans woman in the lockers

In a video Patricia posted on Facebook, she claimed that there was “a little girl sitting in the corner. She could have been [12 years old] … in a towel kind of freaked out.”

Continuously misgendering the fellow gym-goer, Patricia added: “I was offended. I took a picture of him.”

Silva added that the person had been shaving their face and told her they were “queer.”

Queer is an umbrella term that can encompass a variety of sexual orientations and gender identities that are not exclusively heterosexual or cisgender.

Upon complaining to Planet Fitness’ management, Patricia claimed her membership was revoked for violating the rules against photographing other gym users.

The gym’s policy allows members to use the locker room that corresponds with their gender identity, The Post reported.

The customer, Patricia Silva, posted several transphobic rants on social media

The company said in a statement: “Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use the facilities that best align with [their] sincere, self-reported gender identity.”

It further stated: “If it is confirmed that a member is acting in bad faith and improperly asserts a gender identity, they may be asked to leave and their membership may be terminated.”

Silva condemned Planet Fitness’ decision in another Facebook video, adding she was going to report the incident to the police, WGXA News reported.

You can watch Patricia’s videos below:

“This morning I got canceled,” she said. “Planet Fitness is defending the man in the women’s locker room, the man with a penis, rather than the child sitting in the corner with a towel wrapped around her.”

There is no evidence that letting transgender people use public facilities that align with their gender identity increases safety risks, according to a study from the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law.

The study was the first of its kind to rigorously test the relationship between nondiscrimination laws in public accommodations and reports of crime in public restrooms and other gender-segregated facilities, NBC News reported.

“Research has shown that transgender people are frequently denied access, verbally harassed or physically assaulted while trying to use public restrooms,” according to Jody L. Herman, one of the study’s authors and a public policy scholar at the Williams Institute.

“Mind your own goods,” a reader commented

You don't take pics of anyone in a locker room. Don't care who they are. Actually, don't take pics of anyone anywhere if they have not given their permission. It's time the law was changed so people owned their own image. It is being used to bully the marginalised (trans, gay, fat, elderly, disabled etc) far too often.

@Gypsy mata - That's not what rights are. You can't lose a right, that's what makes it a right (as opposed to a privilege). Anyone who uses the phrase "They lost those rights when..." has failed to understand law, jurisprudence, philosophy, language and civilisation.

She broke the rules of taking a picture of someone in the locker room. She got what I consider a minor punishment for that. I would have banned her from all Planet Fitness locations and forced her to delete the picture she took off her phone.

What a sad biitch this woman seems to be. As the partner of someone dealing with gender dysphoria it sickens me how people can harbor such violent feelings towards others, on private matters that impact them in no way whatsoever. Also, as a cis woman, I've been sexually harassed my whole life by cis straight men, but I've never felt unsafe once with trans or non-binary folks. And regardless of that, don't take pictures of others without their consent. How hard can it actually be to just be a decent human being ?...

Until this article, I was totally clueless that there are THIS many hateful, spiteful, twisted busybodies shoving their noses where they’re neither welcome nor wanted. I tried counting, and it seems as if more than half the posts here are from Rowling supporters. I’d had no clue. I need to rethink my hanging it here and I do t wanna be painted with the Stupid & Hateful brush just for reading stuff here. 😰 Everyone’s sooo supportive of people in the articles … unless they hate those kinds of people, apparently.

First day outside of your bubble? Those people you call twisted are just normal people who know the difference between an actual woman and a man with a brain malfunction. The idea that society must adapt itself to satisfy the whims of a tiny minority is unreasonable. That man could have done his business in the mens' lockers with no problem, but through sheer stubborness and lack of respect for society's norms, he wishes to "prove" that he's a real woman by invading their space and disregarding anyone else's feelings.

1. Ms. Silva assumes the other gym-goer has a penis. According to what was written, the person never showed their privates and there were no 'penis police' in the changing rooms demanding to see people's genitals. The only thing this person was doing was shaving their face. Lots of people of all genders and presentations shave their faces. It's nobody's business what your hair care routines are. 2. The "WhAt AbOUt the ChiLDreN!??!?!!" argument. I am wondering why a child was in the changing rooms unsupervised. Was there any verification that there was an actual child there? Or is this a bit of a MacGuffin to bolster someone's discomfort that a person who does not 'pass' according to gender stereotypes was in the room. I am comfortable with a transgender person in the restroom according to their declared gender. I am not comfortable with unsupervised children in the gym because there is considerable risk of injury to them and to people working out.

So, she felt unsafe because somebody was minding their own business taking care of themselves? So unsafe she stuck around to get out her phone and take a picture. Also, she didn't mention a child in the first video. That sounds made up later to make herself look better, but it just makes her sound worse that she was so concerned for this allegedly uncomfortable minor that she seems to have left her alone with the person who made her afraid. She probably shouldn't confuse fear for her choice to be indignant for no real reason.

I hate when people use the "public space" argument without understanding what it means. Allowing the public into a private building does not make it a public space... and beyond that, don't you need a membership at PF, so it would even fit that narrative? I know my wife has been paying for an unused membership for over a decade.

She shouldn't have recorded them, that was wrong on her part and uncalled for. That said, exposing one's PEN1S in a women's locker room – regardless of how one identifies – demonstrates poor judgement, and is quite self centered and inappropriate. Trans people absolutely have the right for self definition, and deserve every bit of equality – but it does not automatically outweigh everyone else's rights and boundaries. Biological women are people too, they deserve to feel comfortable in public restrooms just as much as trans women. There's a middle where everyone could feel comfortable – women could be more tolerant and accepting, and trans women could be more mindful of the fact that exposing their male genitalia to other women could make them feel uncomfortable, regardless of gender.

There is no suggestion that the person in question showed their genitals. I am quite sure that if they had it would have been mentioned.

As a victim of a pedophile and raped at thirteen I've severe CPTSD and not wanting what happened to me to mess with my sex life I had alot of fun with both sexes and threescore and more it was amazing. I 100% accept and acknowledge and respect each individual to make there own ( hmmm decision is not the word!) Identity. What I would like is a third bathroom for them/us as I'm terrified that a sick predator will use this as a opportunity to assault me. Yes I'm aware that it's not likely but the chances will become greater as these sicko rapists are out there. So as I said I wish there was a way to protect against this possibility. But I also want these people going through their changes to have a safe place also and I'm sure the woman's bathroom is safer for them and I wholeheartedly want everyone to have a safe place. Love and acceptance to all.
