Internet Trolls Make Fun Of This Victoria’s Secret Model For Saying She Can Code, Get Shut Down With Perfect Reply

Pulchronomics is the economic study of beauty, birthed by labor economist Daniel Hamermesh. The idea is that one’s appearance can affect (raise) their earning potential. Additionally, the more beautiful among us are held to a higher standard and are hit with a “beauty penalty” (i.e., decreased wages) if they don’t meet these expectations. However, what happens when they meet or even exceed expectations? Well, for women sometimes they are still penalized, as Victoria’s Secret model and software engineer Lyndsey Scott knows too well.

As her website will tell you, the highly accomplished 34-year-old is ranked as one of the top iOS responders on Stack Overflow; is part of the prestigious iOS tutorial team at RayWenderlich.com, and has done video tutorials for kids along with Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg on Code.org. With all of these esteemed achievements, it hasn’t stopped Instagram trolls from doubting this Victoria’s Secret code engineer. A user on Reddit created a thread a thread to highlight this misogynistic thought titled ‘Apparently, it’s impossible for women to be smart and beautiful at the same time,’ with a screenshot of some of their comments. Not one to sit around, Lyndsey Scott took on her haters in one epically glorious response. Scroll down below to see how this Victoria’s Secret model’s story unfolded.

After her recent Victoria’s Secret gig people started looking into her more and found out that she’s not only a model

For some reason, not everyone could wrap their head around it:

Scott, however, cleared things up quickly with this reply

If you go to her website you will see her numerous coding project accomplishments, which includes being the lead iOS developer on a new mobile video app

She explained in another comment that normally she ignores the haters but it was necessary to shed light on this issue in tech

First coders were women. And they weren’t paid much compared to what some programmers got paid after the field got filled with males, instead. But really, any male who doubts a woman’s ability in STEM should remember that he’s part of the problem, and that his insecurities are showing big time. However, the men who can have the mental ability to comprehend that intelligence and physical appearance got nothing to do with one another, and are supportive of women in STEM, those men are much appreciated, and their support is recognized. Good on her for doing it all

Once I tried to explain my friend (later girlfriend) how digital phones were different from analog phones. I didn't know at the time she was an electronic engeneer (ouch) working in digital phones developement (double ouch) and she kindly listened to me, not pointing out every piece of c**p I was telling her. It’s sad because this happens too often, and more women need to speak up like her. Sadly there are many women (like the younger me) who just decided that if looks are all there is and people decide who you are by them, to just accept it. I was told several times that just because I’m blonde (I wasn’t originally, I was originally with black hair) and have curves that I don’t understand anything. I loved drawing (and still do) and wanted to become an animator. I started out working for a YouTube channel, because I wanted to get the feel of having the job first before I moved on to a bigger industry (I’m not in Disney or anything but I’m not going to say which I am in) and when I applied for one of the YouTube channels I ended up being shut down because “I didn’t look like an animator, I looked like a plus size model”. That hurt me so much. I don’t have any disrespect for models or anything, but it hurt me that I couldn’t get the job because of my looks. I simply flipped him off and left

It all comes down to threatening their masculinity. If a woman is extremely beautiful AND intelligent, then that leaves them feeling inferior, and we just couldn't have THAT, now, can we?

I was the best student in my IT class. I quit, and the only other girl too. Despite both of us being hyper-motivated, far more than the male students in our class. It says a lot about the sh*t you have to swallow as a woman in these fields. This woman is a goddess to me.

And those saying "I bet it's only 'Hello World'" are not themselves well-versed enough in programming to understand that that's actually the hard part. Once you know the basics in a few languages, getting to "Hello World" in a new one is often 90% of the challenge.

I help my husband run his computer repair shop. I know some of what he knows and he's teaching me the hardware/repair side of it. Some of our customers still (in 2018) insist on talking to our junior tech (a guy) or my husband cause they think I don't know what I'm talking about. He later hears what they say and says "she's right". I also get a lot of grief as a gamer on consoles in all my years, not just BS like Candy Crush. I've never played it, and a girl to boot. I wanna follow this young lady on Facebook! She's inspiring to me!

As a woman in IT I've had a lot of people not take me seriously over the years. And if you don't look like your stereotypical nerdy girl, no one's gonna think you've got what it takes. Apparently you have to look like a cave troll to be able to work in IT. But I've learnt to ignore the stupid comments and proven people wrong though what I can do. I've even had someone call me after an interview that I was intimidating to some of the guys at the office.

I Applied to a plumbing company for their clerical position. Filled everything out turned it in and got an interview...where they asked me why I wanted a plumbing job when I had no plumbing experience... I had to explain to him that I was there for a clerical position. He then laughed and told me I didn’t meet the requirements. I had been an office admin for over a year and held a personal assistant position to the owner of a company for many more. I was more qualified then anyone they had. I just wasn’t a woman dressed as a hooker.

In this case, I understand that it's because she was already a model and people found out later that she was a programmer, but it still saddens me that, in general, looks are always the main thing about a woman. It's never about an awesome scientist or programmer or engineer that also happens to be really beautiful on top of it, it's always about how this beautiful woman can also do something well. Being good at something or even being nice or anything is the plus, the beauty is what actually matters and what makes the woman noteworthy. And if she isn't beautiful, f**k her achievements in the first place.

I don't know, I am software developer for more than 20 years, I really never felt that someone ever thought I was bad at what I do just because I am a woman. At my previous job, in that company absolutely the best developers were all women. My project leader was really great woman who was highly respected. Not that it matters, but women there were also quite pretty and sweet, some really gorgeous (one was former model). So I did not actually feel that. Maybe I was lucky, or maybe just these comments were more about people who felt in a way upstaged (so to say) or even jealous by woman who not only is genetically blessed and can earn a lot of money just for being born that way, but also brags that she is a genius too. People are like that, no one likes those who are too lucky. Also, some women can feel that this can raise a bar for women generally and that bar is already soooo high. We need to be EVERYTHING. Every "perfect" woman like this raises a bar a little more.

"Additionally, the more beautiful among us are held to a higher standard. " I thought everyone was beautifull. It is really confusing for me. In one article on Boredpanda we're trying to promote that everyone is beautifull and all body sizes are fabulous. And in the next we're actively trying to create elite groups of beautifull standards again.

First of all: it would be very nice if there would be more female it stuff. Fact is,-there is no. James Damore e.g. explained perfectly why that is the case. Therefore it is silly to blame those people who did doubt it in the first place. It is an extremely rare case. But please go on. I hope she will give lessons to her model friends. And who knows, soon we see also one in our company.

Beauty is finite, and she should take advantage of her youth while she can. "If ya got it, flaunt it". Later she can focus on other things like IT stuff or a family (if she wants one). If she has kids she can show her grandchildren how hot she was! ;D

This is the internet, people will comment s**t no matter what you do. The more popular you are, the more s**t you get. "For some reason..." the article presents it like it's somehow unfathomable why would someone comment negatively on this pure human being. Chances are, those comments were 1% of the whole comment section, but people focused on it for the progressive narrative. All the best to the multi-talented & smart lady, but the virtue signaling of the reporting is very poor.

A friend's son left his tech club because it was sexist. Girls would be encouraged to join, but when they did, they'd be asked to do PR or be a secretary.

I saw a documentary that said it was pointless to learn computer programming in school as we are fast approaching the age where computers will be able to code themselves if you tell it what you need. It was really scary, we're all going to get fired!

Why is it so difficult to comprehend that an attractive woman really is capable of intellectual accomplishments as well? I've long been a fan of Asia Carrera who, on top of the accomplishments quoted at http://asiacarrera.com/bio.html, also wrote all the code for her site. she's also a hell of a fun follow on Facebook.

If she has kids she can show her grandchildren how hot she was! ;D

So yeah she can code but why the f**k is modelling called a talent here?! If you don't have the right sizes or are not pretty enough you'll never be one, no matter how 'talented' in modelling you are. Besides doing what the photographer tells you...
