Thanksgiving is a time for families to come together, put aside their differences, enjoy a meal, and make merry. The problem is that things don’t always go smoothly, and sometimes relatives and loved ones use it as a prime time to pick a fight.

This is what a woman experienced when she hosted Thanksgiving for the 3rd year in a row, only to notice her sister-in-law had purposely brought packed meals for only her family. The host couldn’t handle the slight, and it unleashed a lot of drama.

Hosting Thanksgiving can be fun, but it also takes a lot of time, preparation, and effort. That’s why experts advise folks to accept as much help as possible, maybe by delegating tasks to family and friends, or even turning the whole thing into a potluck. Sometimes, getting a head-start a day or two before can also ease the burden on the main day.

The host also tends to get caught up in everything they have to do before inviting everyone over, and that might mean they don’t enjoy the fruits of their labor. That’s why it’s also essential to take a breather on the big day and kick back with loved ones as soon as you can.

Sometimes guests might bring their own meals to the Thanksgiving party, and it’s okay to do so in certain situations

According to Clise Etiquette, if some attendees have allergies or food sensitivities, the host can prepare alternative options for them or ask them to bring their own meals. This conversation should happen between the guest and the cook well before the event to avoid misunderstandings later.

If someone brings food without talking to the host, it can hurt feelings, and the cook might feel like some of their effort went to waste. It could also suggest the guest doesn’t like what they’ve made, which isn’t a nice impression to make, especially if someone has gone to great lengths to make the Thanksgiving meal possible.

People get so caught up in prep for these holiday events because they worry about appearing perfect in front of other folks. Professionals explain that this idea may stem from how media depicts Thanksgiving as a fun, festive experience, so hosts might push themselves extra hard to make the moment joyful and pleasant for everyone.

Since the holidays also tend to bring up a lot of big emotions, conflicts or family disagreements are also expected. This is especially true if loved ones are meeting after a long time, which can bring unaddressed issues to the forefront and lead to hard-to-resolve arguments.

It can be difficult to make people calm down if they get tense around each other at Thanksgiving

That is why it’s important to pause during the festive season and try to be more patient with one another. Putting themselves in each other’s shoes might help shift each person’s perspective and ease conflict. Although this might not fully solve the issue, it can make the day a bit more pleasant.

In this case, the woman clearly didn’t want to get in a fight with her sister-in-law, which is why she decided to set a boundary by refusing to host Thanksgiving the next year. Her choice clearly made her in-laws angry, but hopefully her husband’s support will be enough to tide things over.
