Teen’s Parents Leave Him To Be Raised By Grandparents, Then Decide It’s Finally Time To Be A Family

MTV’s Teen Mom taught us that becoming a parent in your teens is no fun. But life is unpredictable, and none of us are immune to its unpleasant surprises. Although teen birth rates are the lowest they’ve ever been in the U.S., around 126,000 babies were still born to mothers aged between 15 and 19 in 2025.

A story one teen shared online perfectly illustrates the challenges and dilemmas a family faces when teenagers become parents. The kid was raised by his grandparents, but 16 years later, his parents got back together and planned to have another baby. Their son then snapped and told them they were never good parents and weren’t fit to have children at all.

Being raised by your grandparents when your parents are still teens sets kids up for a more difficult life

Being a parent is hard, but it’s even harder when you’re not done growing up yourself. It’s easy to judge teen parents, but if adult parents often have no idea what they’re doing and freestyle the whole parenting thing, how can teens with far less life experience and an underdeveloped prefrontal cortex be expected to be good parents?

A child of teen parents enters this world at a disadvantage. Research shows that kids born to teenage parents have a higher risk of being neglected, mistreated, developing certain health conditions, and having learning difficulties.

Kids like the OP also grow up to be less successful as adults. An almost-20-year-long study found that such adults report lower life satisfaction and earn less than their counterparts born to non-teen mothers by an average of $7,262.

Although this doesn’t seem to be the fate of the OP, children of teen moms often follow their example, even if inadvertently. Researchers find that such kids do worse at school, are less likely to pursue higher education, may become unemployed in adulthood, or even get incarcerated.

Children who are in a similar situation to the OP and are raised by their grandparents often feel shame about their family dynamics. In one study, almost half of the grandchildren raised by their grandparents reported shame and secrecy about their real parents being unable to raise them, and said their peers treated them differently because of their unusual living situation. Considering all the research, the OP seems to have grown up very well-adjusted.

Teen mothers face an unfair amount of shame and stigma, and have a two to three times higher risk of developing postpartum depression than adult moms

Having a baby at 16 is no walk in the park for teen parents either. Experts observe that the success of teen moms especially depends on whether they’re able to finish school. Only about half of teen moms in the U.S. get a high school diploma by the age of 22, so that automatically puts many kids of teen moms at a disadvantage.

Teen moms also experience postpartum depression at higher rates than non-teen moms. Research shows that the rates of postpartum depression for teen moms are two to three times higher (between 15% and 50%) than for adult moms (10%).

Becoming a mother is a major disruption of life, and for teens that’s almost always unexpected. As teens, they often don’t have a fully developed identity, and becoming a mom only disrupts the identity formation process, resulting in confusion, emotional detachment, and avoidance of parental duties.

Teen moms are often ostracized by society and their peers, looked down on by authority figures, and branded as “failures.” Maternal mental health experts at Seleni claim that teen moms face constant shaming and stigma, and it’s not surprising that many develop depression.

“According to society, pregnant and parenting teens must be punished and used for political prevention campaigns, instead of being treated as the fully human individuals that we are,” Gloria Malone, cofounder of the #NoTeenShame social media campaign, added.

Hi there, fellow pandas! As a person (over)educated both in social sciences and literature, I'm most interested in how we connect and behave online (and sometimes in real life too.) The human experience is weird, so I try my best to put its peculiarities in writing. As a person who grew up chronically online, I now try to marry two sides of myself: the one who knows too much about MySpace, and the one who can't settle and needs to see every corner of the world.

I am so weary of posters writing "weary" instead of "wary". One means tired the other means cautious and on guard.

I was somewhat discouraged by all the people in the replies above being down on OP's father. He admitted his mistakes (at least some of which he made when he was very young), and is trying to have a good relationship with his son now, and without pushing, but accepting whatever kind of relationship his son wants. Contrary to what the people on Reddit say, sometimes people do change, and in many cases deserve forgiveness. I think this was one of those cases, and OP seems to agree.
