Common sense, despite its name, is really not that common at all. The world is a big and complicated place, so one shouldn’t expect everyone to have an intricate and nuanced understanding, however, there are always some people who have decided to reject what we do know and instead fully subscribe to fantasy.

People online share the dumbest beliefs they’ve encountered in real people. From the idea that the literal sun is a government invention, to using public funds to control the weather, get comfortable as you read through, upvote the most unhinged ideas and be sure to share your own thoughts and experiences below.

30 Dumb Things That Some People Unironically Believe People who believe that covid wasn’t real. Funeral service workers including myself know how real it was having to build makeshift morgues for all the bodies we couldn’t get to cemeteries/crematories because they were so backed up. Healthcare workers too, obviously. It was an insane time and I could not believe the amount of people that believed it was fake.

I was a paramedic during COVID, I left the profession because I lost faith in a lot of my colleges who would go on the same calls as me see someone who died or was dieing of COVID and was anti vax and in general in denial about the whole thing. Granted I worded in a rural adjacent city so there was politics involved in their thought process but still, when you see a couple people in their 30's dead or COVID sitting up in the tripod position I don't know how you can deny it was an incrediblely deadly pandemic.

I was amused when they showed a picture of a hospital with normal parking and no outside activity as an indicator that it was fake. What did you think the covid patients drove themselves to the hospital, or that the would change PPE outside or something? The insides were war zones, that doesn't emote like osmosis through the walls....

My friend in New York City lost over twenty of his friends in six months from the first wave of COVID. Maybe rural people did not see it as being so contagious they did not have the population density to cause a rapid spread.

Deny that Covid isn't real? Try having your hospital bed put into an upright position so you're trying to sleep in a literal sitting position to help you breathe (think how you would sit in a normal chair) because you've spinal bruising too with 8 different pillows supporting you with an oxygen tube up your nostrils, an IV, a catheter and heart monitor pads... And because your head is quite high up? You can see outside of the room window into the hallway... We all knew what the certain alarm was but I saw nurses doctors going fast down the hallway... One time a nurse was starting to replace my IV and he had to go. I said Go! Someone was 'coding'.... But from that position? I saw bodybags, people who had died being wheeled past the window... Saw a lot of other things... Including a lady die in front of me in the opposite hospital bed from me... Come deny Covid to me straight to my face after I've seen, witnessed that. Come on. F*cking goddamn try it.

The only time they can cause more harm than good or for one specific individual for one specific reason. For example, people are allergic to the flu vaccine. Those people would suffer more harm than good from getting it. My husband got severe heart, failure, and almost died from the Covid vaccine. That doesn’t mean it’s not good for anybody else. But it does mean it’s not good for him and he can’t take it again. I’ve got all my three shots and I have been fine.

The UK government stopped using the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine in winter 2021. In May 2024, AstraZeneca withdrew the vaccine, now called Vaxzevria, from sale in other countries. They were sued for a rare but potentially deadly side effect involving blood clots and heart issues. I know a family where the brothers suffered heart issues and refused secondary shots from AstraZeneca.

That people think that cats can be vegan.

They're carnivores! If you try to make a cat eat an all-veggie diet, they will starve. Their digestive tracts aren't suited for it.

Cats are carnivores not omnivores, people can live perfectly fine on a vegetarian diet if they change meat carbs for beans, mushrooms and other carbs. I would never feed a dog a vegetarian diet but it definitely isn't as harmful for them as it is for cats

So many people here who never look into science but just assume that the ideas that they have been raised with must be the truth. It's perfectly fine for humans to be vegans, according to the largest organisation for dietitians and food health experts on earth. They base their conclusions on actual science and not on "my grandma taught this to my mom who taught it to me" or "this is what we have believed in my culture for generations so it must be common sense".

interesting fact about those laws: they were written and paid for by american evangelical christian churches. For those wondering what I mean by "paid for", those churches handed very large sums of money to multiple Ugandan politicians and people with influential public voices to champion and pass those laws.

Conversion therapy is torture, some countries forbid them for this reason. It doesn't change someone's sexuality, it only traumatizes them. Yes, sometimes it leads to a person choosing to temporarily not ACT on their gay feelings anymore. But that is a bad thing! Because it is such a waste. They could have a wonderful, fulfilling, loving relationship with someone, they could have amazing sex, but instead they're missing out on all those wonderful life experiences. It's like encouraging/forcing straight people to be celibate, to never have any romantic relationships, think about how much less fulfilling your life would be. Or like encouraging/forcing people to never listen to music or never eat any good food: yes, it is possible, but that would be a sad way to live, you would miss out on so much joy. Torturing people into choosing not to have a romantic/sexual relationship with a consenting adult who loves them back, is evil.

I can't understand people donating their hard-earned money to mega churches to fund the lavish lifestyles of their preachers (and notice I said preachers, and not pastors or ministers, because there is a difference). If a church is too large for the pastor to know each member, it's too large to serve its intended purpose.

Holocaust deniers, take a trip to Auschwitz. I challenge you to see, feel and experience the way the place still has an air of fear, desperation and defiance. History is written by the victorious, the Jewish weren’t the victorious, they were the persecuted, they didn’t write that bit of history, the Allied forces did, they filmed and photographed it so you couldn’t deny it, yet here we are, you deny that which is heavily documented and is still a scar on the human race. Sickening.

Absolutely amazing that deniers exist. But to be honest I'm more concern about the larger group climate inactive people, (the mayority) people who believe climate change is real, but do not do anything about it, either because they don't believe is "that bad" or because they believe their efforts to be futile.

The batteries for electric cars can’t be recycled and wear out quickly. I can’t afford solar for my house. And anything I do is infinitismal compared to what industry does!

that's because "global warming" isn't real. it's an outdated term. the proper term is climate change, which is 100% real. climate change deniers often pull the "but if it's called global warming, why is it still cold in the winter" card bc they think it's a big gotcha. it's not global warming. climate change effects every part of the climate, warm and cold. I swear, here in Oregon, we've been breaking records for hottest and coldest days on record for the past 5-ish years.

There are some religious charities that actually do good actions, like helping house or feeding the homeless, with incentives to involve the recipients in work programs and rehab. As long it is not tied to "accepting _____ into your heart", why not? I am a lapsed Catholic, but the notion of "love thy neighbour as thyself" still holds with me.

I used to work at a Bank. One of our customers, an elderly woman whose sole income was Social Security, arranged for the bank to automatically send from her checking account $500 a month to a well-known televangelist because "God told her to do so." She was LITERALLY starving because of this big donation. The Bank checked with local social service agencies - they said there was nothing the Bank could do because she was not declared incompetent. The Branch Manager wrote a polite, pleading letter to the televangelist asking for Christian compassion for this poor woman - please refuse the money! The Bank got a letter from the televangelist's lawyers threatening them with legal action - THEY WANTED THEIR MONEY!

I have read in more than one place that faking the moon landings would cost more than actually doing them. Also, there were so many people evolved that somebody would have squealed by now. You know the old saw that three can keep a secret if two of them are dead.

There are five Lunar Laser Ranging Arrays on the moon. Two were on the back of Soviet probes (part of the machines), and three were placed on the moon by hand: Apollo 17, 16 and 11. It is a metal box with crystals. They can all be separately detected on the Earth by lasers. The robotics needed to place them did not exist in 1969, and NO missions have been to the Apollo 11 site since then. If it was "faked", how did the LLRA get there? It’s very easy. Among plenty of other evidence, “there are 8,400 publicly available photos, thousands of hours of video footage, a mountain of scientific data, and full transcripts and audio recordings of all air-to-ground conversations. We even have 382 kilograms of Moon rock that Apollo astronauts brought back to Earth. These rocks have been independently verified as lunar by laboratories around the world, ruling out a US conspiracy.” https://www.iop.org/explore-physics/moon/how-do-we-know-we-went-to-the-moon

And the invisible man has a list of ten specific things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do any of these things, he will send you to a special place, of burning and fire and smoke and torture and anguish for you to live forever, and suffer, and suffer, and burn, and scream, until the end of time. I dated a guy who was asking me all these really weirdly personal questions like what week of the month was I born, where was I born, where was my mom born. I started to wonder if he was trying to steal my identity. He got so embarrassed when I asked him what was going on he dropped it. Turns out his friend was trying to do an astrology chart to see if we were compatible. His friend also asked for a lock of my hair and some saliva because he was a witch and wanted it for spells. The relationship was awesome, but I steered clear of those friends.

Yup. Consumers did it again. Next companies will raise prices again citing inflation. Those essential port workers alrdy made 40 dollars an hour over 100,000 a year with OT. Six figures. Now they got a raise to $69 dollars an hour. BEFORE Overtime pay. During Covid Ports turned into Billion Dollar Companies. Seems a tad greedy. Are they helping the environment with climate change? It's logical to buy something if you believe others will buy it for a stupid reason. I personally didn't buy toilet paper because I fear that foreign-made paper won't get to the U.S. I bought it because I feared empty store shelves caused by people who fear toilet paper getting held up in shipping.

And that's exactly how panic-buying takes hold. One shopper buys two packs, 'just in case', the shopper behind thinks that they'd better take three, somebody else sees that there's a sudden run on toilet paper and before you know it they're fighting in the aisles.

Funniest thing I find about the attacks, is that we have plenty of footage of the planes hitting the towers, yet one hitting the Pentagon 15 minutes later couldn't have possibly happened, because there is no video?!?!? BTW, I live in the area and Route 110 used to run (almost literally a stone's throw) along side one side of the Pentagon and is busy as hell during rush hour. While watching the (local) news that day, I saw interview after interview of people saying that they saw the plane impact....yet people want to rely on a single low frame CCTV feed that didn't show the plane impact...as proof....

I get trying to argue that the broadcast was edited, because: of course it was; they constantly interrupted to cut to other views. But the raw footage exists. OK, believe that it was also edited (with an apparent lack of understanding of the term "raw footage"). BUT: There are literally MILLIONS of people who were in NYC and saw it happen. Not on TV: outside their window, down the street, etc. Do these people think Will Smith flashy-thing'd them into believing it happened?

I saw two high rise buildings being demolished when I was in my early teens and they had to put the explosives in certain areas to bypass the inner inbuilt safety structures so that they'd fall straight down rather than to one side.

Snake handling churches work on the promise that a pissed off snake they just rattled around in a box won't even bite them because God will shut their mouths like he did with Daniel when he was in the Lion's den. The New Testament of the Bible (the Jesus parts are in the NT) says that testing God is evil and should be avoided. If you ever find a "Christian" church where a tenant is in direct opposition to the New Testament, it's not really a Christian church. Sadly, a great number of churches are like that. Most aren't as extreme as dangerous wildlife abuse, but there are lots of other ways to defy the teachings of Jesus. Love they neighbor, don't be judgemental, give to the poor, etc.

The members of these church do not allow the snakes to bite them. They "handle" the snakes in the belief that their faith in their God will give the power over the snakes. This is a joke mocking conspiracy theorists. The guy saw conspiracy theory counter-protesters at a women's rights march. He wanted to make them look even more ridiculous. He made an absurd "Birds Aren't Real" poster and hung out with the conspiracy theorists. Got caught on film and went viral. Makes me wonder if anyone seeing me in my "Birds Aren't Real" t-shirt thought I actually believed it!

It's no more a scam than stocks are (take that for what you will). Yes, there are scams IN the stock market (pump and dumps, etc.), but that doesn't mean that crypto itself is a scam. Besides, you will know something is a scam when they start to shill it out publicly (commercialize it), because anyone who actually made money has gotten out by then. Of course, I would never invest in crypto, myself as it's not mature/proven enough, IMHO. It's just another commodity like currency futures, wheat futures, pork belly futures, etc.

I mean to be fair Blockchain is actually a really smart technology. And crypto was never ment to be treated as a stock. it was a miscalculation that the creators didn't for see the potentially for speculation on it's value, it shouldn't have happen. it is easy to see the problem in hindsight, but it wasn't at the time, crypto could still be saved if someone adds the means for stability of the coins, could happen tomorrow or it could never happen. I don't blame people for being fooled though, it is a bit complex, easy to be twisted by scam artists

It’s incredibly disappointing that the dominant uses for blockchain technology are high-risk speculative investments. It’s the ‘Murican way: if you can do something, it must be used to make someone filthy rich without them actually doing much of the work.

We probably aren't. But our ability to ever contact any other sentient beings is near zero. Given the limitation of the speed of light and the probability that sentient life is sentient at the same moment in time we are in this 13.8B year old universe and near enough to us to contact, there's basically no chance we ever meet other sentient beings before we go extinct (or they do).

The IRS has a way to donate money to the federal govt. But yeah we have a spending problem. People always say tax the rich. If we siezed 100% of all assets of every billionare in the US, all income over 100,000, for the feds and by the power of magic had zero affect on the economy, we still wouldnt make the US yearly budget. We are at a point where we need to go to a base zero budget system, and reform the entire federal govt

Well, technically, he's correct. Nations, states and borders are all fictional, man-made constructs. Heck, I live in Florida and sometimes have a hard time believing it's real lol.

Those 'Florida man' stories are so wild, that it would actually make more sense for Florida to not exist at all, than for all those stories to be true 😄

I nearly killed myself once with an undercooked chicken breast. Got a nice case of campylobacter, continuous explosive diarrhea, severe dehydration, and was hospitalized. My kidneys had *shut down*, but the miracle workers at the hospital managed to get them rebooted, and back up to a little over 90% function. How cool is that!

I met someone who literally believed you could only get salmonella by eat raw salmon when I asked if she was not afraid of eating sushi from a street vendor (outside a subway station in Mexico City).

once many many years ago, a JW knocked on my friend's dad's apartment. his roommate answered, and the JW started talking about how gays are bad and all that BS. So, my friend's dad walked over, wrapped his arm around his roommate and said 'you wanna say that again?' They weren't gay, or dating, but it shut the MF up.

I don't understand them. They came knocking once, I like learning new things, so I chatted to them a bit. We got to the bit where they said that heaven is limited to 140(odd) thousand people, I asked how many members there were, they said 'Over 8 million!', so... 'You're already over capacity, and that's not even taking into account your members that have already passed on.' 'No, they are already dead; Death is a state of nonexistence'. 'So it's only those that are alive at the time of Armageddon that will be chosen for heaven, and the rest just... cease to exist in any way?' Seems to me that if you want to increase your chances of getting to heaven, you need to be thinning the herd, not recruiting!

With any religious group that comes to my door, I just tell them I'm not interested in what they pedal as I'm a Satanist and then close the door on them. Last time it took a few seconds for them to just slink away.

I have a great solution for this. I saw them coming through the window, so I let my then 5-year-old son answer the door, knowing he would drop into his dissertation on Thomas the Tank Engine and anything related to Thomas. He will go on for hours if you let him. They've never come back to my door, even after we moved

One time when they rang our doorbell, I zoomed to the door in just a towel - I had been in the shower, but was waiting for an important delivery. Anyway, it was a man about my age, not my anticipated delivery, and with my having gained weight, I hadn't realized my towel didn't wrap around me quite as well as it used to. Never saw that man, or any other JWs, after that.

30 Dumb Things That Some People Unironically Believe All these AI companies actually convincing people they are going to create AGI.

    There's 3 types of AI:
Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) or what we would call AI right now
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) which would be par with human intelligence
Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) which is the kind that will either make us immortal or kill us all.

30 years ago there was a TV demonstration of facial recognition. Today this is commonplace if you have an iPhone. The military always has tech at least ten years in advance of the public. I believe that AI is much more refined than we would think and that it can or will be used to predict political decisions of foreign nations eg will they invade their neighbor or start a war. I think we have passed the point where this is being used for that reason by the US military. Wait 30 years and you'll know if I'm right or just full of it..

had someone tell me the white stringy bits in eggs are rooster sperm. They're the membrane on the inside of the shell that holds the yolk in place so it doesn't break if the egg gets jostled. Could not convince her of that fact.

Most people who say this, don't mean they're ACTUAL periods, but that they are the bird equivalent of a period. Like when people say the side fins of a fish are their arms and the back fins are their feet.

People somehow keep expecting quality content from developers under greedy shareholders in big video game companies like Ubisoft or EA games. It’s completely absurd to me that those companies keep making money with so few amount of work behind every game. And the fact that people still buy those games is always gonna surprise me. Thoe poor developpers, that can’t be pushed to greatness due to release dates and quotas….

What exactly is amazing? the fact that we expect quality? the fact that developer's are exploited? the fact that there is no quality? also I don't think this is exclusively a big industry issue, Indy devs also produce lazy, uncreative stuff, by numbers I would say indy devs make more garbage, not that is fair to compare. But I think the issue is that creating truly new, truly committed work in the entertainment industries is just hard and rare, 95% of everything made is derivative and half assed.
