Common sense, despite its name, is really not that common at all. The world is a big and complicated place, so one shouldn’t expect everyone to have an intricate and nuanced understanding, however, there are always some people who have decided to reject what we do know and instead fully subscribe to fantasy.
People online share the dumbest beliefs they’ve encountered in real people. People who believe that covid wasn’t real. Funeral service workers including myself know how real it was having to build makeshift morgues for all the bodies we couldn’t get to cemeteries/crematories because they were so backed up. Healthcare workers too, obviously. It was an insane time and I could not believe the amount of people that believed it was fake.
as my dad would say "I hope the fleas of a thousand camels infect your armpits" ... thats pretty real and they couldn't deny that ROFL
Load More Replies...I was a paramedic during COVID, I left the profession because I lost faith in a lot of my colleges who would go on the same calls as me see someone who died or was dieing of COVID and was anti vax and in general in denial about the whole thing. Granted I worded in a rural adjacent city so there was politics involved in their thought process but still, when you see a couple people in their 30's dead or COVID sitting up in the tripod position I don't know how you can deny it was an incrediblely deadly pandemic.
I was amused when they showed a picture of a hospital with normal parking and no outside activity as an indicator that it was fake. What did you think the covid patients drove themselves to the hospital, or that the would change PPE outside or something? The insides were war zones, that doesn't emote like osmosis through the walls....
The same people who believe Covid is fake also believe climate change is fake yet the Democrats can control the weather.
dont forget the idiots who thought it was caused by 5G honestly some people should be banned from leaving the house and being on the internet
My friend in New York City lost over twenty of his friends in six months from the first wave of COVID. Maybe rural people did not see it as being so contagious they did not have the population density to cause a rapid spread.
Deny that Covid isn't real? Try having your hospital bed put into an upright position so you're trying to sleep in a literal sitting position to help you breathe (think how you would sit in a normal chair) because you've spinal bruising too with 8 different pillows supporting you with an oxygen tube up your nostrils, an IV, a catheter and heart monitor pads... And because your head is quite high up? You can see outside of the room window into the hallway... We all knew what the certain alarm was but I saw nurses doctors going fast down the hallway... One time a nurse was starting to replace my IV and he had to go. I said Go! Someone was 'coding'.... But from that position? I saw bodybags, people who had died being wheeled past the window... Saw a lot of other things... Including a lady die in front of me in the opposite hospital bed from me... Come deny Covid to me straight to my face after I've seen, witnessed that. Come on. F*cking goddamn try it.
I can’t wrap my head around the fact that some people believe that vaccines cause more harm than good. We have mountains of research showing how effective and safe they are, yet the misinformation still spreads like wildfire. It's baffling how easily people can fall for such unfounded claims!
'A person' is smart. 'People' are dumb, panicky animals and you know it. - MiB
Load More Replies...It's because people aren't growing up seeing siblings dying of these diseases. It's not real to them, whereas a tissue of lies and misinformation on internet is real to them.
I highly reccomend a book called "Stuck", by Heidi J. Larsson. It explains very well why and how antivaxxer ideas spread in a very clear way. Wonderful read overall.
I got 6 Covid shots and am doing great. I actually feel like I have more energy.
A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes
The only time they can cause more harm than good or for one specific individual for one specific reason. For example, people are allergic to the flu vaccine. Those people would suffer more harm than good from getting it. My husband got severe heart, failure, and almost died from the Covid vaccine. That doesn’t mean it’s not good for anybody else. But it does mean it’s not good for him and he can’t take it again. I’ve got all my three shots and I have been fine.
Many people had a week long reaction to the first COVID vaccines. They misunderstand that immune system response for being COVID.
That people think that cats can be vegan.
They're carnivores! If you try to make a cat eat an all-veggie diet, they will starve. Their digestive tracts aren't suited for it.
Not just cats. Any animal that is naturally omnivorous will eventually suffer from some sort of health issue
Cats are carnivores not omnivores, people can live perfectly fine on a vegetarian diet if they change meat carbs for beans, mushrooms and other carbs. I would never feed a dog a vegetarian diet but it definitely isn't as harmful for them as it is for cats
Load More Replies...This reminds me of the 'influencer' who had a Fennec fox as a pet, and insisted that it be vegan. Poor thing is probably dead now, it had so many health issues and she was so confused as to why.
This guy who came to our vet hospital blamed us for how his three cats were wasting away, as he was feeding them a homemade vegan diet. No matter how much we insisted that his cats were literally dying due to starvation, he refused to believe it. He would yell at us...and we were patient but adamant about it. Those poor cats...
The same goes for putting essential oils on your pet. Many are toxic especially when the animal licks them off their fur.
So many people here who never look into science but just assume that the ideas that they have been raised with must be the truth. It's perfectly fine for humans to be vegans, according to the largest organisation for dietitians and food health experts on earth. They base their conclusions on actual science and not on "my grandma taught this to my mom who taught it to me" or "this is what we have believed in my culture for generations so it must be common sense".
My dog loves kangaroo and fish. It would be mean to take that away from him
SIL was mostly vegetarian. Dr told them to eat meat was risking health by not getting enough proper protein.
I was laughing with my sister today that some people believe democrats used off shore windmills to “aim” hurricane helene to hit the Republican counties. My sister admitted it was unlikely but that we do have the ability to affect the paths of hurricanes.
She’s also anti-vaxx so I really should have known better.
If you believe your opponent can aim hurricanes you should just give up.
Please provide me with her name and contact info - I can get her a great deal on a bridge.

Love how when its damage to progressive areas, its the will of god, punishment for gays, etc etc etc. But when it hits regres... sorry 'conservative' areas, its magical weather control technology by those evil people who violate gods will by doing things like being nice to their neighbors even when they aren't born in the same country.
Georgia member of Congress Marjorie Taylor Greene is blaming the government for Hurricane Helene. Last week she tweeted "Yes they can control the weather. It’s ridiculous for anyone to lie and say it can’t be done.” Some are claiming that Biden had the hurricane geo-engineered in order to seize and access lithium deposits in Chimney Rock. It's got so crazy that even some Republican politicians are trying to correct the lies and publicly rebuking Trump and co. for spreading them. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/oct/09/republican-chuck-edwards-hurricane-helene-disinformation
I have said this before and I will say it again in this forum...Seriously, America, WHAT THE ACTUAL F***K?
If we could really "aim" hurricanes don't they wonder why we haven't aimed it at Mar-a-Lago years ago? They're so dumb.
Drove through some 30-50 miles (don't know, IN was boring af) of wind farms. They're not doing anything except generating some power.
That Conversion therapy can change an individual's sexual orientation from homosexual or bisexual to heterosexual.
I'm 40+ years old. When I was at pubity age, I noticed I was gay. I hated it, I hid in the closet (until my late 20's) I battled depression and self harm.. I HATE when people say; it's a choice or you can change your sexuality.
For this stupid bastard who downvoted you: You don't wake up some morning and decide to be gay. IT IS NOT A CHOICE!
Load More Replies...Uganda wouldn't need its "Kill the Gays" laws, if that was the case. NO-ONE would choose to be gay there, or would gladly be converted if it was possible. It's just teaching people to hide their orientation.
interesting fact about those laws: they were written and paid for by american evangelical christian churches. For those wondering what I mean by "paid for", those churches handed very large sums of money to multiple Ugandan politicians and people with influential public voices to champion and pass those laws.

Load More Replies...Conversion therapy is torture, some countries forbid them for this reason. It doesn't change someone's sexuality, it only traumatizes them. Yes, sometimes it leads to a person choosing to temporarily not ACT on their gay feelings anymore. But that is a bad thing! Because it is such a waste. They could have a wonderful, fulfilling, loving relationship with someone, they could have amazing sex, but instead they're missing out on all those wonderful life experiences. It's like encouraging/forcing straight people to be celibate, to never have any romantic relationships, think about how much less fulfilling your life would be. Or like encouraging/forcing people to never listen to music or never eat any good food: yes, it is possible, but that would be a sad way to live, you would miss out on so much joy. Torturing people into choosing not to have a romantic/sexual relationship with a consenting adult who loves them back, is evil.
I love the way you phrased that. as someone who had 2 mom's, i never had to suppress feelings out of fear, but it's still nice to support people who have
Load More Replies...Just being of a straight sexual orientation is stressful enough dealing with all the head trips people have about sex and relationships. I cannot imagine what stress it must cause to have a sexual orientation that society disapproves of.
Why do conservatives spend so much time fixated on someone else's LIFE? We are what we are and no amount of "Conversion therapy" is going to change that. It is nobody's business! Every day the conservatives brutally attack the LBGQT? community. Maybe try something different. like focuses on the GOPS inability to serve in the best interest of ALL except just a few.
That people willingly donate their life f*****g savings to churches who are obviously just stealing their money. Like small town churches that recieve absolutely no funding because the town has a pop of 45? Makes sense to need to take donations but those 10000 member plus mega churches are straight up grifters. I can't see how people could do that.
"And many will come saying there He is, or He is here. Do not believe them, they are wolves in sheep's clothing". I think about that a lot! The troubling thing is those who demand a "Christian Nation" think their God is orange and who repeatedly goes against that which is written. Same thing with many of the "Godly men".
Joel Olsteen literally has a clothing line that uses this quote to promote it. It's called Sheep's Clothing. You cannot make up stuff like this.
Load More Replies...I can't understand people donating their hard-earned money to mega churches to fund the lavish lifestyles of their preachers (and notice I said preachers, and not pastors or ministers, because there is a difference). If a church is too large for the pastor to know each member, it's too large to serve its intended purpose.
Look at the way a preacher dresses. If he dresses better than those he preaches to he's probably just scamming them and not sincere.
and hade at least one private jet to spread "his word" 🛫✈🛸
Load More Replies...Any church does not need donations. The Catholic church is one of the wealthiest businesses in the world, pays no taxes, and has one of the most expensive art collections.
Anybody remember the antichrist? Maybe he walks among us. I think he is orange.
Look closely into the eyes of billionaire Ken Copeland, and you'll see the demon in his eyes. He's the orange abomination of religious grifters! He buys planes off the back of the poor people foolish enough to send him all their money as they eat ramen for dinner. So sado and sickening!
Some of the mega churches are run like franchises. They set up shop in towns that already have small churches with the same basic belief structure then actively recruit people to leave their current church. I went to one of those services out of curiosity and left halfway through. It was pitched just like a MLM.
Mega churches that refuse to open up and help people during disasters. That's NOT what Jesus would have done. Don't call yourself Christian if you refuse to help people in need.

Holocaust deniers. Jewish Space Laser.
Holocaust deniers, take a trip to Auschwitz. I challenge you to see, feel and experience the way the place still has an air of fear, desperation and defiance. History is written by the victorious, the Jewish weren’t the victorious, they were the persecuted, they didn’t write that bit of history, the Allied forces did, they filmed and photographed it so you couldn’t deny it, yet here we are, you deny that which is heavily documented and is still a scar on the human race. Sickening.

Genocide deniers are much much worse because they're actually enabling the current genocide.
That global warming isn’t real.
Absolutely amazing that deniers exist. But to be honest I'm more concern about the larger group climate inactive people, (the mayority) people who believe climate change is real, but do not do anything about it, either because they don't believe is "that bad" or because they believe their efforts to be futile.
What can we do that will help? Turns out the things I save for recycling aren’t being recycled. My electricity is from coal-fired plants. The batteries for electric cars can’t be recycled and wear out quickly. I can’t afford solar for my house. And anything I do is infinitismal compared to what industry does!

It's not the just oil companies unfortunately. I think most climate change deniers fear it's real and refuse to accept the behavioral and psychological (lifestyle) adjustments that doing something about it will require.
Load More Replies...that's because "global warming" isn't real. it's an outdated term. the proper term is climate change, which is 100% real. climate change deniers often pull the "but if it's called global warming, why is it still cold in the winter" card bc they think it's a big gotcha. it's not global warming. climate change effects every part of the climate, warm and cold. I swear, here in Oregon, we've been breaking records for hottest and coldest days on record for the past 5-ish years.
There is a lot of confusion between global warming and climate change. Both are real..
Covid vaccinations had microchips or whatever used to track people. Unbelievable...
If you’ve ever seen the needles used for implanting microchips (such as the ones for pet identification), you would immediately know that it’s impossible to inject a microchip through a standard vaccination needle. Tech can get small, but we’re not able to make it *that* small yet.
Yeah, the smallest RFID (which can do nothing but hold info that can be picked up by something CLOSE to it) is pretty small...but not vax needle small.

Ah yes, the non-existing pyramids in Bosnia used to charge alien space ship batteries.
Of course, the "I don't understand it, so it much be aliens" approach to explaining anything...
Why would aliens come here to build mega-structures and then leave?
I think at lot of these conspiracies spring from people inability to grasp that other cultures or eras are capable of achieving great things. So if must be aliens.
...and probably a better brain, than those who says it is impossible. No it is not, YOU just aren't smart enough to figure out how to do it, but that does not mean that someone else can't.

People donating to televangelists.
There are some religious charities that actually do good actions, like helping house or feeding the homeless, with incentives to involve the recipients in work programs and rehab. As long it is not tied to "accepting _____ into your heart", why not? I am a lapsed Catholic, but the notion of "love thy neighbour as thyself" still holds with me.

My favorite quote by Apollo 16 LM Pilot Charlie Duke (paraphrased): if we were gonna fake the moon landing, why would we do it 7 times? And fail one?!
I have read in more than one place that faking the moon landings would cost more than actually doing them. Also, there were so many people evolved that somebody would have squealed by now. You know the old saw that three can keep a secret if two of them are dead.

Probably because the Soviets watched the whole thing through their own radar scopes.

There are five Lunar Laser Ranging Arrays on the moon. Two were on the back of Soviet probes (part of the machines), and three were placed on the moon by hand: Apollo 17, 16 and 11. It is a metal box with crystals. They can all be separately detected on the Earth by lasers. The robotics needed to place them did not exist in 1969, and NO missions have been to the Apollo 11 site since then. If it was "faked", how did the LLRA get there? Now they got a raise to $69 dollars an hour. BEFORE Overtime pay. During Covid Ports turned into Billion Dollar Companies. Seems a tad greedy. Are they helping the environment with climate change? It's logical to buy something if you believe others will buy it for a stupid reason. I personally didn't buy toilet paper because I fear that foreign-made paper won't get to the U.S. I bought it because I feared empty store shelves caused by people who fear toilet paper getting held up in shipping.
And that's exactly how panic-buying takes hold. One shopper buys two packs, 'just in case', the shopper behind thinks that they'd better take three, somebody else sees that there's a sudden run on toilet paper and before you know it they're fighting in the aisles.

Not on TV: outside their window, down the street, etc. Do these people think Will Smith flashy-thing'd them into believing it happened?
The version I heard was that the CIA did it, mined the towers floor by floor so they collapsed like a row of dominoes... not sure why....so the USA could bomb Iraq? Conspiracy theory runs rampant here.
So what happens when they visit the actual site? I have been there in 2005.
Who has ever said that? Certainly many people believe it was a false flag operation, but that's nowhere near saying it didn't happen.
Have you actually never heard of the “9/11 was fake/ 9/11 was an inside job” conspiracy theories? They’re far from uncommon on the internet.
Load More Replies...I'm not denying the attack. It was horrifying. I just have random questions as to how the buildings fell. It just seemed odd that they both collapsed at the same time. No conspiracy theories or anything. Obviously the building took an immense amount of damage.
I downvoted you but? Skyscrapers, other tall buildings are designed to fall/collapse in a certain way. I saw two high rise buildings being demolished when I was in my early teens and they had to put the explosives in certain areas to bypass the inner inbuilt safety structures so that they'd fall straight down rather than to one side.

Chemtrails from airplanes - The government or other parties are involved in a secret program to add toxic chemicals to the atmosphere via contrails from airplanes. Various different trainings are applied for chemtrail such as sterilization, lowering life expectancy, mind control or weather control.
What *IS* true about airplanes and pollutants in the sky is that a few weeks in September 2001 and most of the 2021 were the cleanest the world's air has been since the 1950s.
Haven't these people ever seen a crop duster? If you want to spray something, you need to do it from 30 feet, not 30,000 feet.

Churches that allow venomous snakes to bite them to show their faith in the Lord... dude, no!!
NumbSurprise:
And then they refuse treatment is they’re bitten. Several of them die every year. Natural selection.
That is a cult disguised as a church to swindle money from attenders.
Snake handling churches work on the promise that a pissed off snake they just rattled around in a box won't even bite them because God will shut their mouths like he did with Daniel when he was in the Lion's den. The New Testament of the Bible (the Jesus parts are in the NT) says that testing God is evil and should be avoided. If you ever find a "Christian" church where a tenant is in direct opposition to the New Testament, it's not really a Christian church. Sadly, a great number of churches are like that. Most aren't as extreme as dangerous wildlife abuse, but there are lots of other ways to defy the teachings of Jesus. Love they neighbor, don't be judgemental, give to the poor, etc.
This isn't what actually happens though. The snakes they use have been carefully drained of venom or they just use snakes that look venomous but actually aren't. But then some of the people think "in the name of Jesus" and get bit outside of controlled situations and another one bites the dust
The members of these church do not allow the snakes to bite them. They "handle" the snakes in the belief that their faith in their God will give the power over the snakes. Sometimes the snakes bite and the person dies. I guess then the remaining members believe that person just didn't have strong enough faith. Beyond stupid.
That people actually believe birds aren't real and that certain events in history were fake. The fact there are people out there that truely believe millions of people are paid "crisis actors" blows my mind.

But there is enough crazy people out there that it seems it is slowly becoming a bona fide conspiracy theory. Let's see how it plays out in the future

He made an absurd "Birds Aren't Real" poster and hung out with the conspiracy theorists. Got caught on film and went viral. Makes me wonder if anyone seeing me in my "Birds Aren't Real" t-shirt thought I actually believed it!

And sadly I suspect this is also how the Flat Earthers started.

That people into crypto honestly think it's "next generation technology."
They all know it's a scam. But they need "greater fools" to buy into it in order to get their exit liquidity.
Ponzy scheme. Not pyramid, no MLM just straight currency scamming.
Load More Replies...It's no more a scam than stocks are (take that for what you will). Yes, there are scams IN the stock market (pump and dumps, etc.), but that doesn't mean that crypto itself is a scam. Besides, you will know something is a scam when they start to shill it out publicly (commercialize it), because anyone who actually made money has gotten out by then. Of course, I would never invest in crypto, myself as it's not mature/proven enough, IMHO. It's just another commodity like currency futures, wheat futures, pork belly futures, etc.
No it's not. The only value it credibly represents is the price of the electricity used to mine it.
Load More Replies...I mean to be fair Blockchain is actually a really smart technology. And crypto was never ment to be treated as a stock. it was a miscalculation that the creators didn't for see the potentially for speculation on it's value, it shouldn't have happen. it is easy to see the problem in hindsight, but it wasn't at the time, crypto could still be saved if someone adds the means for stability of the coins, could happen tomorrow or it could never happen. I don't blame people for being fooled though, it is a bit complex, easy to be twisted by scam artists
It’s incredibly disappointing that the dominant uses for blockchain technology are high-risk speculative investments. It’s the ‘Murican way: if you can do something, it must be used to make someone filthy rich without them actually doing much of the work.

I mean, for those that got into it at the very beginning it turned out pretty profitable. But I highly doubt that if you try to get into bit coin now, that it will be just as profitable for you.
That Russian elections are not rigged.
My wife: "Why don't they vote him (Putin) out?" "Ummm...maybe because any opposition he faces he just poisons or meets a fatal accident?" I don't have patience to explain his former career as head of the E German KGB, who may not have invented torture, but certainly refined it.
[Russian accent] These only Western lies. Sadly, people voting for opposition met tragic accidents other people may learn from...

The Russian elections are not rigged, they are just following the script. They are a performance piece, like live theatre, but on a larger scale.
Wearing different gemstones has different effects on your personality and life, as per your zodiac sign. It's a common belief in India.
Would like to test theory. Who is supplying the jewels for the study??!!!
Not only in India, I'm afraid. I've met plenty of people that believe in this, and I don't live near the country. People selling "special crystals" are a very common sight in markets.
I think it's related to color theory... red makes you stressed or more energetic, so red gems would light that "inner fire" or whatever. I just collect them cos they're pretty :)
I'll buy the crystals because SHINY ROCK I WANT TO EA- I don't care what they're supposed to do

Either we are no alone, or we are. Both are scary to think about.
Load More Replies...We probably aren't. But our ability to ever contact any other sentient beings is near zero. Given the limitation of the speed of light and the probability that sentient life is sentient at the same moment in time we are in this 13.8B year old universe and near enough to us to contact, there's basically no chance we ever meet other sentient beings before we go extinct (or they do).
That's ignorantly assuming that IF life exists, is intelligent, and had interstellar travel, that they appeared at exactly the same time we did.

My son (11) has a theory that humans and animals were put on earth as an experiment from Aliens and we have failed so bad that they just left us here. Makes sense cause there are hieroglyphs and petroglyphs with beings that look like Aliens in them from millions of years ago.

That there is a government website where people can donate to reduce the national debt. It’s at $35 trillion as of today.
Yeah, that makes perfect sense....since we (gov't) can't balance our books, would you guys give us additional money on top of your taxes, to help us pay down our debt. Yeah...how about you start by not paying $500 toilet seat, or give more staff funding to medicare to stop insurers from abusing medicare (medicare "parts", anyone). Better yet, why not directly ask this countries billionaires to directly chip in, eh???? /rant over
The US Air Force paid $10,000 each for toilet covers in the C-5 Galaxy cargo plane and in the C-17 Globemaster cargo plane. The Air Force had the capability to make them for $300 each but was not allowed to do so because of contracts.

The money that would pay the national debt comes from us anyway. Congress certainly hasn’t shown much interest in using regularly collected taxes for this purpose.
The IRS has a way to donate money to the federal govt. But yeah we have a spending problem. People always say tax the rich. If we siezed 100% of all assets of every billionare in the US, all income over 100,000, for the feds and by the power of magic had zero affect on the economy, we still wouldnt make the US yearly budget. We are at a point where we need to go to a base zero budget system, and reform the entire federal govt

once many many years ago, a JW knocked on my friend's dad's apartment. his roommate answered, and the JW started talking about how gays are bad and all that BS. So, my friend's dad walked over, wrapped his arm around his roommate and said 'you wanna say that again?' They weren't gay, or dating, but it shut the MF up.
Has anyone ever encountered a Jew at the door asking you to join? No? Oh yeah , space laser got em
I don't understand them. They came knocking once, I like learning new things, so I chatted to them a bit. We got to the bit where they said that heaven is limited to 140(odd) thousand people, I asked how many members there were, they said 'Over 8 million!', so... 'You're already over capacity, and that's not even taking into account your members that have already passed on.' 'No, they are already dead; Death is a state of nonexistence'. 'So it's only those that are alive at the time of Armageddon that will be chosen for heaven, and the rest just... cease to exist in any way?' Seems to me that if you want to increase your chances of getting to heaven, you need to be thinning the herd, not recruiting!
I have a great solution for this. I saw them coming through the window, so I let my then 5-year-old son answer the door, knowing he would drop into his dissertation on Thomas the Tank Engine and anything related to Thomas. He will go on for hours if you let him. They've never come back to my door, even after we moved

Yes. Yes it does. And I say that as a son of a Seventh Day Adventist, so I have first-hand experiences of the lunacy.

Anyway, it was a man about my age, not my anticipated delivery, and with my having gained weight, I hadn't realized my towel didn't wrap around me quite as well as it used to. Never saw that man, or any other JWs, after that.
All these AI companies actually convincing people they are going to create AGI.
butcher_666:
There's 3 types of AI:
Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) or what we would call AI right now
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) which would be par with human intelligence
Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) which is the kind that will either make us immortal or kill us all.
30 years ago there was a TV demonstration of facial recognition. Today this is commonplace if you have an iPhone. The military always has tech at least ten years in advance of the public. I believe that AI is much more refined than we would think and that it can or will be used to predict political decisions of foreign nations eg will they invade their neighbor or start a war. I think we have passed the point where this is being used for that reason by the US military. Wait 30 years and you'll know if I'm right or just full of it..

It’s completely absurd to me that those companies keep making money with so few amount of work behind every game. And the fact that people still buy those games is always gonna surprise me. Thoe poor developpers, that can’t be pushed to greatness due to release dates and quotas….
What exactly is amazing? the fact that we expect quality? the fact that developer's are exploited? the fact that there is no quality? also I don't think this is exclusively a big industry issue, Indy devs also produce lazy, uncreative stuff, by numbers I would say indy devs make more garbage, not that is fair to compare. But I think the issue is that creating truly new, truly committed work in the entertainment industries is just hard and rare, 95% of everything made is derivative and half assed.
