Aesthetics are a pretty subjective notion. Everyone has their favorite color, patterns, textures and so on. That being said, it’s very easy to find designs that probably needed a bit more time on the drawing board. You have probably run into a billboard or an item from Ikea that makes you wonder what they were thinking!

Fortunately, the ideas below are different. The Instagram account Design Therapy is devoted to showcasing interesting and innovative designs, from kitchen solutions to architecture. It has amassed over 250 thousand followers with ideas that are both engrossing and soothing.

Upvote and comment on your favorites, and if you are still interested in examples of therapeutic design, check out Bored Panda’s other collections of awesome designs here. Or, if you want a bit of contrast, take a look at some examples of bewilderingly terrible design here.

This is Whitby abbey, I live in Whitby, this wasn't done with drones, it was just done by someone "painting" dots on a picture in photoshop or something. Would be cool to see it with actual drones though.

Is this real? It is quite impressive. I have seen some very impressive drone displays as "fireworks" displays but I feel it is extra impressive to make a complicated shape with 100s of coordinated drones ==AND== have that shape lined up perfectly with a building on the ground.

OK, I've got to be THAT one... Haven't there been a lot of reports that this sort of thing disturbs native crustaceans and other water/beach dwelling creatures because many use those stones to live under? (I got that lecture from someone a few years ago when I posted something similar)

As gorgeous as this is, moving stones near water to create sculptures is devastating to that ecosystem. Localities are putting signs up asking people to stop this trend. It erodes the sand/beach/ soil that the stones normally keep in place, impacts filtering, flora and fauna. Please don’t do this. Like glitter (something else I love), it looks beautiful but is actually genuinely destructive.

Humans enjoy being surprised, and clever and interesting designs often provide just that. The sight of an unexpected form, material or function can be truly captivating and bring a smile to one's face. This is why so many people love to collect odd and unique objects, from whimsical sculptures to unusual pieces of furniture.

There is a certain method to our preferences madness. It’s probably not a surprise that symmetry seems naturally pleasing. Researchers Yi Huang, et al. found that our brains enjoy looking at symmetrical patterns more than asymmetrical alternatives. Young children will even stare at symmetrical objects for longer, even though similar, asymmetrical objects generally have more details.

Neat! This deserves MUCH more love! It's a painting by Spanish street artist Pejac (https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce01REntiVk/), WELCOME, in Aberdeen, Scotland, positioned outside a building housing many charities. From his Insta: "Created for all those who feel themselves marginalized, foreign and discriminated against, this agglomeration turned into a doormat greets anyone who wishes to be welcomed." He describes it as symbolizing that people are "tired of being stepped over" here (great pics too): https://mymodernmet.com/pejac-welcome-nuart-aberdeen/

In fact, our brains really crave novelty. While studying the brain's response to a series of images, researchers Nico Bunzeck and Emrah Düzel found that whenever participants would see something unexpected, their body would produce dopamine. Think about that, novelty directly affects the pleasure centers of the brain. So try something new, even if its just a new recipe or lock screen background!

There are hardly words to describe that amazing feat of human engineering genius once you've seen it in person. The smell, the Latin inscribed on small obelisks and plaques, and the sounds of cheers and jeers from almost 1950 years ago that you ask yourself over and over again if that's really what you're hearing? or is it just the lull of modern day Romans (literally, people from Rome) coming, going, and living their lives. It is a profound sight to see. I hope when you do get to see it for yourself it'll impress you the way it impressed me.

I used to hide little jars of pencil shavings from my Prismacolor projects around my roommates room. I labeled the jars "Children of the Doomed". He was always puzzled by their appearance, but I never took credit. After a few months the apartment lease was up and we all went our separate ways... This particular friend ended up moving in with my sister, and so the Saga continued. These Children of The Doomed followed my completely baffled friend all throughout our state; on camping trips, at festivals, parties, etc, thanks to me, my sister and two other discreet people. Finally I moved out of state and it all stopped. When I moved back 15 years later I finally told him it was me, but at that point he wasn't mad or anything. Just glad to have an answer... I think I shall send him this lamp for his next birthday

I had a collection of pencil shavings in primary school! I think most people had a phase of painstakingly sharpening pencils to get that perfect frill. I don't know about other schools, but it was practically a currency!

Armed with this knowledge, we can consider ways to introduce some design principles into our own lives. For example, we could rearrange their furniture to make the most of their living space, or incorporate more natural light into their home by installing larger windows or using light-reflecting surfaces. Similarly, we could choose furniture, décor, and accessories that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Another possibility is to look for solutions to everyday problems that are both efficient and visually appealing. For example, instead of using a cluttered collection of plastic containers to organize a pantry, someone could use elegant glass jars with labeled lids to create a functional and attractive storage solution. Minimalism might appeal to others, since removing clutter from a space can make it more functional and give it some novelty.

I do not understand why this place's web site bills it as a luxury resort. It looks like a bomb shelter inside and out and you apparently have to really like the Utah dessert. For $3,400 to over $7,000 USD per night I can have a really good time somewhere else. PERSPECTIVE: A month long trip to the Philippines including airfare, meals, renting a house and everything else - cost me less than ONE NIGHT in their cheapest room. And the stuff I saw was a lot more interesting than dirt and rocks in the distance. I also got to swim in awesome clear blue ocean as well as pools that looked nicer than the one pictured.

The one that "goes" from one person to the other is really cool, until one of them, probably the woman, gets shorter, as most women do as they age, or until either of their skin starts to sag. Once that happens and they stand next to each other to show it off they will have to say, "these lined up when we got them, 10 years ago"

I don't really think this counts as a design. It doesn't take a whole lot of imagination or talent to come up with the idea to draw a basically straight line, however it does take A LOT of both of those qualities to be able to make people think that it's an amazing idea.

More or less the definition of art, good job :) These are not mere straight lines though, not even basically. They're taking anatomical context into account. I love when science and art converge. It has an entirely different effect on the observer as compared to design that is supported by science. Visual/philosophical vs functional inspiration.

Island Is A Double-Decker Driverless Tram Designed By @pontidesignstudiohk For Hong Kong In The Post-Covid Era

Island Is A Double-Decker Driverless Tram Designed By @pontidesignstudiohk For Hong Kong In The Post-Covid Era

The name Island refers to the innovative design of the interiors, with large circular benches where passengers sit facing outwards.

The exterior design is inspired by Hong Kong buildings with curved curtain walls. Island’s curved windows and domed top draw in light by day and awe-inspiring views by night. The interiors are sleek and comfortable: charcoal gray walls, cushioned seats, wooden floors and trims with natural finish.

Island connects several elements of design and urban life: transportation, landscape and sightseeing, safety and comfort. It represents the forward-thinking spirit of Hong Kong, and redefines public transport for the post-Covid era. Island won the 2020 GIDA Design Award.

Yeah. It turns out that the people who usually build busses do actually think about what people who might ride busses want. There is certainly still room for improvement, but not by simply ignoring what already works.

I feel like a vinyl record should be for spotify. yeah, u can carry tapes around more easily. but its easier to find a track and play it on a record, then fast fwd a cassette tape.

Where is the queen? There should be two piece types of which only exists one for each color. The one in the middle looks more like a king. Something is off here,...knight, castle, p**n, rook... wait... two queens for each color? ^^ That's not chess then ;) some polygamic variant of it :p

There are two queens in the set (shown either side of the king) because that's the most common p**n promotion. If you look closely the back row is on the lines, so one more than there are squares.

We have the Barbary Pirates to thank for that. So many people from coastal areas in Europe were captured and enslaved by the slave traders, that the remaining populations deserted the coastal areas and moved further inland, hoping to avoid the slave traders.

Is the front part which the model is sitting on designed to fit on a regular chair? The whole thing looks just really weird and very uncomfortable to sit on...

No, imagine stepping in dog or cat poop with those. They would obviously be show shoes on a shelf😆

There’s a phobia some people have about holes. Trypophobia. That might be why this creeped you out.

I saw something similar at MONA in Hobart. If you're ever in the area, I would really recommend going. (Learn from my mistakes - if you have anxiety/suffer from overstimulation, stuff like that, I'd take a pair of headphones and something to help you calm down. It's a lot)

Ah, yes, now this looks vaguely familiar... Those padded walls, didn't I hurl myself at them time and time again when those sadistic ba***rds wouldn't let me out and kept telling me that "it was for my own good" and if I would just "calm down" and "stop making such a fuss", they would let me go "eventually'?... Or was that just one too many late-night horror movies...

Line tats are cool - but not so attractive while the thing is new and the skin is still red. Wait a few days to photograph, man.
