Too much worldview friction will end any relationship but it’s particularly bad if the person you are dating has a very different view of what your common, future life will look like. The question of “who will serve and who will eat” is more than just a Leonard Cohen lyric.

A woman turned to the internet for advice after learning that her friend’s BF felt that she needed to be, in her words, a 60s housewife, cooking and cleaning for him despite being employed. So folks online shared their thoughts and suggestions and later the woman shared a small update from her friend.

Some men really believe that they are entitled to their partner’s labor

The expectation that a woman should simultaneously be a full time financial provider and a traditional homemaker is a fascinating modern delusion. We see a growing subset of men who loudly demand a tradwife while absolutely refusing to be a traditional provider. They want the vintage domestic bliss of a woman waiting at the door with a hot meal but they also want her paycheck to help cover the mortgage. This creates an incredibly unfair dynamic where the woman is essentially working two full time jobs while the man gets to clock out and relax. It stems from a deeply ingrained sense of entitlement where domestic labor is still viewed as strictly female work regardless of how many hours she spends doing hard physical labor outside the home.

Looking at the couple in the story highlights exactly how absurd this entitlement truly is. These two individuals work the exact same exhausting manual labor job with the exact same grueling rotating shifts. Biologically and physically they are both wiped out by the end of the day. Yet he genuinely believes he is owed a cooked meal and a clean house simply because he is male. Refusing to make a simple soup because he fears she might never learn to serve him properly is a blatant admission of manipulation. He is not looking for an equal partner to build a life with. He is looking for a substitute mother who also happens to pay half the rent. The audacity to sleep on the couch while she unpacks their shared condo perfectly illustrates this profound lack of respect.

This behavior does not exist in a vacuum. It is heavily influenced by internet subcultures that romanticize extreme gender roles without addressing the economic reality of modern survival. Young men consume content telling them they are the kings of their castles and deserve absolute submission and domestic service from their partners. They absorb this rhetoric but conveniently ignore that the historical men they are trying to emulate completely funded those households. Demanding traditional submission while splitting bills evenly is just exploitation disguised as family values. The constant name calling and labeling her as lazy is just an extremely toxic tactic designed to break down her self esteem so she complies.

Unfortunately, this division of labor is more common than it should be

The concept of the second shift is very real and heavily documented. According to surveys done by the Pew Research Center, even in marriages where both spouses earn exactly the same amount of money the wife still spends significantly more time on household chores and caregiving. The man in the story takes this national average to an abusive extreme. He weaponizes his own refusal to learn basic life skills like cooking to force her hand. The fact that he gets offended when she makes a quick meal just for herself proves his anger is not about food at all. It is about control and his expectation of constant service. He feels comfortable demanding her labor because society has spent centuries conditioning men to believe women exist primarily to make their lives easier.

Living with a spouse should never feel like unpaid servitude. A healthy partnership requires mutual empathy and a genuine desire to share the heavy burdens of daily life. When both partners are exhausted from working hard labor they should be ordering takeout or cooking a quick meal together. Treating a working woman like a live-in maid while hurling insults at her is not a normal part of cohabitation. It is a massive warning sign of deep disrespect and blinding entitlement. Readers must understand that true traditional relationships require sacrifice from both sides. Demanding a tradwife while bringing nothing but a bad attitude and dirty laundry to the table is nothing short of ridiculous and no woman should ever have to tolerate it.

I'm not a medical doctor, but I can diagnose what's wrong with this guy: he's a total AH. It's incomprehensible how OP's friend claims to love him.

If I had a dollar for every time someone has said the words "... but I love him..." to me I'd be a rich woman. It stands right next to "Swear on my mother's/kid's life" when they're clearly lying right to your face in terms of phrases I cannot understand or put up with.

"Liver soup.". That jogged a memory. I wonder if this is Leberspatzlesuppe or Leberknodelsuppe. That was a big thing in my mother's side of the family when I was growing up. It's by no means easy to make. I quickly learned to disappear on days when either of those were on the menu. (Love liverwurst and fried/grilled liver though.)

LEBERKNODLE SOUP!!! Oh man, there was a Bohemian restuarant we would frequent outside Chicago that had this(just called "liver dumpling soup" on the menu.) My god I loved it. The flavors of my childhood.
