I recently read this quote: “There’s no such thing as bad students, only bad teachers,” and it got me thinking about how important it is to have good educators. After all, kids spend most of their time in school every day, so they are naturally going to be influenced by their teachers.

Speaking of which, this woman shared online that she had the worst chemistry teacher in high school, and his toxic behavior even took a dangerous turn in class. Eventually, she grew sick of him jeopardizing her future, so she made sure that the school got rid of him. Here’s what she did…

It’s important to have good teachers, as they massively influence young minds

As someone who comes from a family of teachers, I understand how unbelievably powerful the profession is. I mean, educators can change how a child thinks and even make the learning process super fun. However, it can all turn bitter as soon as a bad teacher enters the picture and ruins the whole experience of students.

A new U.S. survey has revealed that 84% of students say they had more good than bad teachers, highlighting the positive experiences most of them have with their educators. However, it’s uncommon for students to go to a counselor about issues with a teacher, according to Laura Beata, a school counselor, meaning concerns about “bad teachers” tend to either go unreported or remain unresolved.

High school itself can be pretty challenging for students. I mean, they are in their teen phase, which we all know can get frustrating. Add to that peer pressure, academic challenges, extracurricular activities, or homework. The life of a high schooler is no walk in the park, and having a toxic teacher is probably the last thing that they need.

Extensive research has found that poor teacher quality is a major problem that prevents students from learning important skills in both thinking and behavior. In fact, a study has also shown that such poor teachers negatively affect their pupils’ grades. Obviously, kids can feel threatened if a teacher who is supposed to help them instead jeopardizes their future.

Also, let’s not forget that during an impressionable age, students might be quick to pick up bad habits from their teachers. So, parents sometimes take a big risk by trusting others with their kids, but a terrible educator can quickly break their trust.

As opposed to bad educators, good teachers can actually change their students’ lives

In the author’s case, not only did she have a terrible teacher, but he also showed no remorse for endangering the class. Moreover, he was not hesitant to discriminate by giving boys better grades than girls. Facing this differential treatment based on gender at such a young age can be pretty daunting.

According to the experts at PopEd, a national education program, “Gender bias within the education system affects girls’ learning experiences and long-term opportunities. Even when they are able to attend school, biased practices and environments often prevent them from achieving equal outcomes and realizing their full potential.”

“This bias appears in teaching practices, curriculum content, and school environments, perpetuating inequities that can impair girls’ full academic and personal development,” they add. It’s honestly disturbing to think that a deserving individual can miss out on reaching their potential just because they are born female.

In the poster’s case, netizens felt that she did the right thing by reporting the toxic chemistry teacher. Also, it was alarming how he reacted by cornering her after class and making her uncomfortable. In the end, she was just a teenager who was looking out for herself.

It took me decades to understand two spectacularly bad high school teachers. Day drinking. Mrs. B was wooden by 9 am. Mr. C was increasingly animate between 9 - 11 and barely awake the rest of the day. Even in HS, I felt bad for both of them.
