30 People Share Movies Where The “Strong Female Lead” Was Actually Done Right
Contrary to what some screenwriters might believe, the strong female leads in their films don’t have to be the sexiest women on Earth, and they certainly don’t need to fall in love with the male lead. They can have their own agendas, their own minds and be capable of solving problems on their own, just like women in real life!
Reddit users have recently been sharing examples of the “strong female lead” trope in films that have actually been done well, so we’ve gathered some of their top replies below. From Clarice Starling to Elle Woods, enjoy scrolling through, and be sure to upvote all of your favorite strong, independent women!

Alien
And then she ups the ante in Aliens which of course also had Vasquez, a very competent Newt and the Alien Queen - the movie is perhaps the best ever example of the Strong Female trope
Loved the character of Vasquez too....with that big machine gun!!!:)
Load More Replies...This is the most obvious #1 choice in the history of Bored Panda. Aliens was better, but it's still Sigourney.
Ellen Ripley was the first female action hero I ever saw!! And is still the most bad a*s b•!{¥ ever!!!
Did you saw a movie titles Paul? Hahahhahahs best reference to alien I saw ever!!!!
Load More Replies...Ripley was originally written as a male character. When the decision was made to have her be female instead, they kept all the dialogue, etc. exactly the same.
I like how the movie never really made me feel like she was supposed to be the hero from the beginning. They started as a team and she was “forced” to step up and she did it with flying colors. Her strength and bravery were amazing. And though we pretty much knew she would be the lead in Aliens, the character didn’t have an ego. We saw the damage it had done to her, but she faced it head on.
Terminator 2
How could I have forgotten about this? Absolute perfection. If it wasn't for Aliens, this would be the best ever.
Side Note: Gonna show my age here, but love the part in Wayne’s World where they get pulled over - “Have you seen this boy?”
Best character ark - from helpless "Damsel in Distress" to Metal A*s kicking badass. She trained, learned tactics and put effort in becoming better.
James Cameron make get some flack but he does write some strong female characters.
I have tried to jack a shotgun with one arm ever since I saw her do it!
"The Addams Family"
Mortisha was amazing. But honestly, they all were. The only healthy family in TV
I hate the fact that the healthiest couple in media, the one where they are both so blatantly and madly in love with each other, are the couple that are deliberately supposed to be the 'weird' couple, the opposite of what is 'normal' and 'correct'.
I still stand firmly by my belief that Morticia and Gomez have one of the most loving relationships
Laura Dern, Jurassic Park. Seeing a strong woman in science at such a young age had a profound impact on me, and I truly think it’s one of the reasons I am a scientist today.
Yup :). I love movies with strong women starring
Load More Replies...I always loved the fact that she takes the lead, and it's left to Dr. Grant to look after the children - turning that trope on it head. Plus that scene with Ian Malclom!!
Ooo good call! I actually never thought of it like that.
Load More Replies...It seems she left such an impression that the OP didn't even remember her name and just put "#actresses character".
See... I find it interesting that ... so.... first Jurassic Park Movie... you got Dr. Sattler. Intelligent, got her sh** together, butt-kicker, thinks before she acts, etc. Then the REST of the movies... every single female character is ... kind of an annoying, short-sighted, self-righteous idiot. What the heck happened.
Hidden Figures. Wonderful movie about the women working for Nasa in the 60's who were human computers; they calculated the numbers by hand for the first flight to the moon.
Furiousa in Mad Max: Fury Road.
Danielle in Ever After.
There's one major thing about Hidden Figure that's really bothersome: The inclusion of the fictional character Al Harrison who encourages the women to stand up for themselves. In reality they managed this on their own.
Ever After is one of my absolute favourite movies. And Hidden Figures is excellent!
Ever After is SUCH a great movie! I have many favourite moments but one of them is the bit where the prince comes to rescue her from the evil baron or whoever he was, only to find her already on her way out of there because she just kicked the guy's a**e.
I just watched Hidden Figures for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Great movie!
Haven’t seen the others but I LOVED Hidden Figures. That movie’s sure to have encouraged more girls to become women in STEM.
X files. I can't believe I haven't seen that yet.
She was highly intelligent with a strong confidence that couldn't be beaten down by the sexists in the early seasons nor the crushing but invisible power of the Syndicate.
Although I'm agnostic, I enjoyed how the show handled Scully's faith in the show. I thought it handled it well, especially dealing with the things the duo did throughout the series.
Isn't there even something called the Scully effect, which describes the increase of young women choosing a cereer in science because of Gillian Andersons' character?
The Silence of the Lambs
Her character was written to be too untested, too tentative. But Ms Foster's portrayal of that character was brilliant
So many great examples of a well-written and acted character. I was blown away early on: she flees the prison and we see her in the parking lot about to cry. In the next scene, she's calmly back to work. A humiliating setback for a new agent, but she gets back on her feet and continues working.
Load More Replies...And let us not forget the character of Catherine, the final kidnapped victim of Buffalo Bill. Despite being trapped in a hole and completely at his mercy, she used her wits to formulate an escape plan and bravely stood up to him even as he was about to kill her.
Director Jonathon Demme wanted Michelle Pfeiffer for the part but she said no. Then he found out Jodie Foster really really wanted it, and he said that when he saw "this determined little figure striding toward me down the corridor", he knew she was perfect.
"Fargo"
u/Mr_Saturn1 added:
Awhile back on twitter someone asked to name movies that features a female protagonist who is competent at her job, in an established relationship with a man (the relationship does not start during the events of the film) and her partner does not criticize her work or encourage her to give up. The only movie people could name that fully satisfied these requirements was Fargo.
She's also a rare example of a pregnant character who doesn't give birth by the end of the movie. (In fact I think the actress was pregnant for real while making the movie?).
Load More Replies...Not a movie, and I admit I haven't seen all episodes, but I think, Jennifer Love Hewitt's character in Ghost Whisperer might meet the requirements.
Last movie I saw with my father before he passed, and I will forever be a daddy’s girl…. Upvote just for that, but the point behind it as well.
Rachel Weisz playing Evie in The Mummy.
"Take that, Bembridge Scholars!"
Weisz and Fraser reminded me of Nick and Nora Charles from the Thin Man movies. I love thosa movies.
That's how to write a smart woman - she's playing her part in a group without being the know it all smartass that lectures all the others on a constant level. Nor is everybody else incompetent to make her look better, she's strong on her own
Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
It set the foundation for the TV series which did a strong female lead that didn’t have to take being a strong woman so seriously to make the point.
Not a movie, but Xena and Gabrielle deserve an honorable mention.
My favourite ever TV series. Love it. Also "KISS rocks .... why would anyone want to kiss rocks?"
My favorite tv series of all time, with the best series finale.
Heck yes! And it’s probably my most rewatched series that I have to watch every so often.
Xena is still a good show, sadly it's quite hard to find it on TV or streaming
Kristy Swanson was my favorite Buffy. The movie had Paul Rueben and Rutger Hauer. Donald Sutherland. Twas awesome.
I'm'unna push back on this one. She's supposed to be an ordinary girl, except for being a well-trained martial-arts fighter. But if a huge man took the abuse she does, he'd end up a stony, silent Danny Trejo. No, actually, he'd end up a rotting corpse or a broken pile of bones. There are so many things that are so wonderful about the show, I don't mean to slam on it, and the way that she does start off with but then transcends a master, becoming a leader not just a trained fighter, is sooooo much better than the army of Mary Janes. I just wish the physical blows she took were "merely" more like Indiana Jones and less like The Incredible Hulk.
She isn't just well-trained in martial arts. If that were the case they wouldn't choose just one teenage girl to be a slayer. They would've started out with a corp of them and they'd be like bruce lee meets seal team 1. Into every generation, a slayer is born. One. And she has accelerated healing, and some other mystical stuff going on, that was injected into the slayer line through magic and demon blood at the dawn of humanity. I may have watched this too many times when I was younger. But she got to be quippy and kick a*s and that was just awesome.

Emily Blunt in Edge of Tomorrow
Stole the film in all honesty she did. Plus Emily Blunt was pregnant during filming.
Load More Replies...Well acted, does not stoop to stupid stereotypes, a competent whole person. Yes, good addition (and I loved her in this movie).
I don't know how I missed this movie, but I'm going to look for it.
Mulan, the Disney animated one.
Oh they thoroughly destroyed her in the remakes. She was perfect in the animated movie. Smart, strong, great character arc and development, she was brilliant.
The live-action left me very concerned and robbed of my time. I love the animated movie though.
Load More Replies...I haven't watched it but at this point I don't even want to know
Load More Replies...One of my favourite Disney characters. I admired Mulan’s intelligence, humility, empathy and bravery. She became a strong warrior while still remaining true to herself. What other Disney character has saved an entire country? (We don’t talk about the c**p 💩 storm that it Mulan 2 and the live-action remake)
I adored Mulan growing up and she still remains one of my favourite Disney characters. She becomes a fierce warrior without losing her empathy and determination. She constantly remained true to herself. (We don’t talk about Mulan 2 or that horrible live action remake).
Fried Green Tomatoes gives you a selection of them.
This has always been one of my favorites. Silkwood is one I know isn't going to make the list, so, I'm nominating that one.
Brave. As a young girl it was very validating to seeing a princess who was competing as well as winning against men. I also really like the movie because Merida isn’t perfect, and you can definitely tell that she’s a 16 year old girl, especially watching it while I’m older. She’s a teen girl who’s doing her best to prove to her parents that she is strong and can take care of herself. I also really like this movie because Merida isn’t afraid to yell and strongly state her opinion. The women in my life are often very strong people as well as outspoken, and I really love seeing that represented in media, and Brave is really the “strong female” trope done right.
I love Merida more than any Disney princess, just proves that Pixar does it right
I really enjoyed watching Brave even in my mid 30s, but I cried my eyes out at the end when she thought she was losing her mom. And when the movie was over, I called my mom, crying my eyes out and apologizing for being such a turd face when I was a teenager.
I saw this when I was very young, and I don’t remember the plot, but I remember loving it and finding Merida awesome. I also adored Mulan and Tinkerbell movies. Mulan’s strategic manoeuvres beat all the generals, and she mastered fighting without anyone believing she could. Tinkerbell’s fiery and won’t let anyone stop her from reaching her goals. Later Disney films often got female empowerment done right.
Legally Blonde.
I will forever love the scene where she questioned the murderer and got them to confess using her knowledge of perms.
Or the one where she discredited a main witness with her knowledge of shoes, or more the knowledge of what kind of men stereotypically, have this knowledge. The entire movie was 2000 Girl Power camp, and I love it!
Load More Replies...My favourite part was where she helps her awkward friend (played by the son of Anthony Perkins, and when you know that you can really see the resemblance) get a date by pretending to be his jealous ex girlfriend. I love how she's smart and tough but they don't make her mean or man-hating. She's strong while also being kind, helpful, and fond of wearing nice clothes and other traditionally feminine things.
Harry Potter
Hermione, Ginny and Luna are all completely different, but I would describe them all as strong female characters.
In the books, yes, in the movies, not do much. Also McGonagall is dear to my heart
Please read the books, they ruined her in the movies, she is WAY better in the books
Load More Replies...Honestly, I would have loved Harry to die then have McGonagall and Granger work together. I hated Harry in the movies and books because he was more oblivious than a rock.
They need to make an Auror spin off with just the female HP charcters where it's True Detective meets Hogwartz. Hunting Dark wizards. I could get behind that.
Hermione absolutely, but ginny movie character was an absolute steaming pile of S**T
Wow, imagine attacking Emma Watson for standing with the LGBTQIA+ community after JK Rowling said some very cruel and hurtful things against people who define as trans. Other actors and actresses including the actors that have played Rob and Harry have also said how cruel JK Rowling’s comments were. If you think hateful speech against the queer community is alright you need to ask yourself why you hate people who are different from you. Now bah humbug you holiday Scrooge.

Kill Bill
This is one of my favorite movies. The scene in the Japanese garden is epic!
Was she "done right"? Based on how many female martial arts assassins?
I read your comment three times, and still can not get it, lol!

It's so good that I'm jealous that you will get to see it for the first time!

My Cousin Vinny.
Steel Magnolias.
This had a fantastic cast. Another of my favorites and it gets me every time at the end. I don't know if I will see Beaches down this list but, I'm going to throw that one in now, just in case it doesn't make it.
Dolly got most of the best lines, and NAILED them! "Louis brought his girlfriend home, and the nicest thing I can say about her is all her tattoos are spelled correctly." "Sammy's so confused, he don't know whether to scratch his watch or wind his butt."
What do you mean? I liked Aluminium Chrysantemums. It was Copper Begonias that sucked.
Load More Replies...YES. Watched it with my mother and teared up. I never cry in movies!
"Arrival"
Fellow translator and language services worker here! This movie made me weep in theatres.

"Lilo&Stich", Nani
Nani was brilliantly imperfect. You could tell she loved Lilo beyond belief and sacrificed so much to keep her little sister feeling loved and protected. For a Disney movie, Lilo and Stitch tackled some pretty heavy subject matter.
The hunger games had an interesting perspective on it I thought.
This is a good selection. Was #27 when I voted which seems way far too low.
As she is caught up in the all-too-common love triangle, I always thought this was an interesting version. Katniss needs to decide whether she wants to take the role of the boyfriend or the girlfriend. With Gale, she would always be the girlfriend. With Peeta, she'd be the protector / the hunter, while he is the communicator / the nurturer. She chooses Peeta (or well, due to circumstances), who is her damsel in distress. She hunts, he bakes.
Rogue One
Such an excellent film , and no happy ever after ending.
Load More Replies...I love how her and the male lead never had a romantic subplot. It would have been cheap and unnecessary. Keeping it professional was much better, and it made their desperate final hug that much more moving.
My favorite thing is that any Star Wars fan knew how it would end, but they still made you care about them. I really didn't think that I'd get so attached going into it.
Shoshana in Inglorious Basterds.
Winter's Bone, if we're counting female characters who are strong in the sense that they take responsibility under adversity and not just a woman who acts like a macho dude and can beat up men.
I thought Mad Max: Fury Road did a good job.
You can tell by how hated she got by incels. Awesome character well played.
Not a movie but Avatar the last airbender
This show is the best thing to happen to childhood. It will forever be my favorite and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
Agreed! I recently rewatched every single episode, brought back so many memories.
Load More Replies...it's Katara !!!! Toph is so good too ! everything in this cartoon is great !
I mean, Katara is pictured cause she slayed it, but Toph is one of the greatest strong female characters ever
Katara, Toph, Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors, Mai, Azula, Tai Lee, Avatar Kyoshi... lots of badass girls and women to choose from <3
I saw the movie when it first came out and thought it was awful! Only movie I ever walked out halfway through.
Thelma and Louise
I have to dis agree slightly. This is not the feminist movie you think it is. It shows: women cannot count on authorities to treat them fairly, and they will choose to die rather than live in such a world. Being forced by societal pressures to end your life, even if its on your terms, is horrifying. It doesnt make the heros, it makes them martyrs.
That doesn’t make the movie unfeminist. It makes it a movie that disturbs the comfortable. Two thumbs up!
Load More Replies...i have never understood why this movie is seen as a feminist movie...these are women making one stupid choice after another...and, in the end, they chose death to escape the mess they got themselves in...
If men get to have that kind of movie, I want one for us too.

The long kiss goodnight
Not a movie but Kim Wexler in Better Call Saul.
What a beautifully written character, and what an actress we were given to portray her. Smart, strong, flawed, loving, forgiving, tough. I'm sick she never got any awards.
Howls Moving Castle
I gotta object, Nausicaa and Mononoke did it better. I've never seen a bad Ghibli film but in the context of this list featuring strong female characters, Those are the strongest I can think of in the Ghibli catalogue.
Their all very different stories, so the context differs. You're right though, I have yet to see bad Miyazaki movie.
Load More Replies...Pretty much all the Miyazakei movie have strong females in them. Sophie here is wonderful, but so is Chihiro in Spirited away, Nausicaa and Mononoke in their films respectively as already mentioned, Kiki is pretty tough and makes a hell of a go of it leaving home at 13. Ponyo is so sweet but stands up to her dad. Many others and they are all great in their way. Miyazaki writes good female roles. *edited to correct autoincorrect.
Add pretty much every other Ghibli movie to this list, especially Nausicaä.
Hmmm, have to watch is again. This is my favorite, by far, Ghibli movie. But it seems I was overwhelmed by the finest animation ever produced and missed that story / character thing that was also going on.
Annihilation! I love that movie but one of my favorite things about it is that the main characters are all competent at their jobs and well respected, and they just happen to be women.
Be real, this movie is horrible. The weird interpretive dance scene at the end???
One can appreciate the strong women characters without loving the film...
Load More Replies...Samantha Carter! SG-1. Strong and smart af! Oh! and half of female characters in battlestar galactica (newer one), especially Laura Roslin.
Yes to both of these. Sam is da woman, and I loved how BSG had boxing matches where it didn't matter what gender was fighting what gender, they just went all out at each other.
Load More Replies...No Princess Leia? (OK, forget about Return of the Jedi; I'm only talking Star Wars.) ... she was the original Hollywood warrior princess, absolutely overturning the princess trope. She took command of her own rescue, and then of the remnants of the Republic. Consider every good Harrison Ford role consisted of him humorously responding to tropes, from "why did it have to be snakes" to taking a gun to a sword fight. But despite his comments, it's not *funny* when the damsel-in-distress becomes kick-a*s; she just assumes command so effectively, even Han falls in line (until he completely bails and returns). The movie itself fails the Bechtel rule (is that the right name?), but that has little to do with Leia being anything less than boss.
Come to think of it, how about Marion from Raiders of the Lost Ark? Jones never quite yields to her like Solo did, but she was doing a damned good job of getting out of trouble on her own, especially considering Jones himself needed the most literal case of God-from-a-box ever. Compare to how cringy the "dumb blonde" schtick from Temple of Doom was.

Annihilation. A team of scientists and doctors facing the unknown. All of them are women. The Expanse - Drummer, Draper, Naomi, Madam Secretary-General Avasarala...
Yes, to The Expanse! One of the many reasons I love it so.
