Acceptance is all the rage these days. Everywhere you look, social norms, beauty standards, and 'taboos' are being challenged. Especially in regards to body image and cultural expectations about the ways beautiful women present themselves in public.
“It's about time too,” I hear many of you say. After all, we live in a free, individualistic society, and there should be no pressure to conform to unnatural or unrealistic 'standards' that were consolidated under an outdated patriarchal system. However, for the more conservative among us, these changes and challenges are happening so quickly that it can become disorienting. Perhaps there are more pressing issues than body hair we should all be focusing on?
The latest example of breaking down barriers comes, naturally, in the form of a pithily-named month. From 'Veganuary' to 'Decembeard,' any movement worth its salt seems to be couched in a punny and easily achievable 30-day package, and 'Januhairy' is no different. “This isn’t an angry campaign for people who don’t see how normal armpit hair or any other body hair is, but more an empowering project for everyone to understand more about their views on themselves and others,” British student Laura Jackson, gal behind the anti body hair removal Januhairy, wrote. The campaign's aim is for women to grow out body hair for one month to support Body Gossip’s education program, which encourages everyone to be the best version of themselves and “to rock their own brand of gorgeous!” A week into the month, beautifully hairy women are already posting progress pics. You can scroll down below to check them out yourself, and let us know your own thoughts on the natural beauty initiative in the comments!

I wish women would look like this for flims set in medieval/ancient eras more often. Absolutely gorgeous.
Exactly, it's not accurate to have women with shaved pits/legs in periods pieces, since shaving only became a thing in the early 20th century

Load More Replies...I never understand why women have to be shaved like a kid. I want to have a real women not a kid without hair?
It's really the collective opinion of the predominant culture and country we live in. Otherwise, we'd just accept it as natural and not bat an eye.
Load More Replies...I'm from a third world country.. People I know die from curable diseases like malaria and Tuberculosis. Oh and lets not talk about cancer. There is no treatment available to the public. I've lost 3 aunts to cancer in the past 7 years. Whatever little (modern medecine) I can afford, I send back to our rural villages. By the way, I'm from Papua New Guinea. It's the country next to West Papua, the nation that's suffering from an ongoing genocide by the Indonesians, while the rest of the world is content in ignoring them. Look it up. ☕ So yeah... I'm entitled to an opinion on a bunch of women who don't want to shave and think they deserve attention online. [ps: I'm putting this reply here because some people seem to think that I'm a "hater". I'm not! I have relatives who can't afford razor blades. I'm used to hairy women. I just think there are other things that we should care about, rather than giving attention to this stupidity ]
Yikes. I rather shave thank you. Nasty sweat filled itchy hair. Yuck,
Nonsense. Perspiration does not depend on hair. And armpits hair is useful for preventing skin irritation. You just belong to the brainwashed majority, that's all.
Load More Replies...Rural women in third world countries have no access to to razor blades or affordable medicine/food and clean water but here we are giving attention to some self-absorbed idiots just because they didn't shave. 😐☕ To what end?
If you are actually concerned about women in third world countries, go donate to causes that help them, instead of coming here on your high horse pretending that you're somehow better than these women

Just don’t raise the arm to high...especially at the dinner table....or .Lord forbid at McDonaalds....eeeeeikes....
Load More Replies...eeeeek i’ve just learnt about januhairy!! it’s always so exciting for me to see new waves of this movement of body nonconformity. it’s gaining a lot of attention from the media which is EXACTLY what is needed. people need to be reminded over and over that what women choose to do with their bodies is THEIR OWN DAMN CHOICE. people need to see women who do not care to change themselves to fit our society’s bullshit beauty standards until seeing that becomes the norm. that is the only way we can change the standards
.
shave or don’t, i don’t care or judge you either way, it’s your choice! but i do encourage all women to think about the changes they make to their bodies and think about why they do it. who they do it for
.
personally, there are so many reasons i don’t shave my armpits and very few reasons why i would. but one of my biggest motivators not to is knowing that by not shaving i am actively choosing not to give money to companies, and the people who run them, that think that women’s bodies aren’t good enough the way they naturally are
If people don’t support woman showing hair then why did you click here!?
It's a free world. Why people can't understand that there are different opinions? I'm neither supporting or against this. Everyone has right to do whatever they want with themselves.
Load More Replies...Choice is what it's all about. It's your choice what to do with your body, whether you choose to shave or not. No one -- young, old, male, female, stranger, family member -- has any right to judge you. Be true to yourself; that's all that matters.
Someone on the first photo made a good point about how fads like these and the people participating are getting internet fame over... not doing something that's kind of annoying to do? If i stop brushing my hair and post the pictures online would people flock to comment "self-empowerment! stop normalizing the sexualization of women!!!" Its a known psychological fact that specific things are generally found attractive to the other sex, its each individual's choice to take those things into account or not; its fine to ignore them, or protest the forced compliance to do such grooming or behavior techniques, but to act as if the psychology is absent is just ignorant. Not that anyone who has a positive view of these trends is stupid and should learn up, I want these things to be normalized as well, as far as it can be. However, it's unrealistic to just splash cold water on society and be like "hey change now" and expect the CORE PSYCHOLOGY of attractiveness to flip 180.
i don’t understand this whole if you’re a real woman then you’ll go hairless movement...it’s hair we all have it it shouldn’t matter if women keep it or shave it...personally i don’t care but what bothers me is if a woman shaves then shave everyday i hate the prickly stubble feel...i shave daily because some women don’t like how stubble feels and it’s the same for me...if you have it you have it if you don’t you don’t...MEN do not care about hair MEN care about the inside not the outside
Hi I’m Laura, the gal behind Januhairy! I thought I would write a little about my experiences and how Januhairy came about... I grew out my body hair for a performance as part of my drama degree in May 2018. There had been some parts that were challenging for me, and others that really opened my eyes to the taboo of body hair on a woman. After a few weeks of getting used to it, I started to like my natural hair. I also started to like the lack of uncomfortable episodes of shaving. Though I felt liberated and more confident in myself, some people around me didn’t understand why I didn’t shave/didn’t agree with it. I realised that there is still so much more for us to do to be able to accept one another fully and truly. Then I thought of Januhairy and thought I would try it out. It’s a start at least . . .I have had a lot of support from my friends and family! Even though I had to explain why I was doing it to a lot of them which was surprising, and again, the reason why this is important to do! When I first started growing my body hair my mum asked me “Is it you just being lazy or are you trying to prove a point?” . . . why should we be called lazy if we don’t want to shave? And why do we have to be proving a point? After talking to her about it and helping her understand, she saw how weird it was that she asked those questions. If we do something/see the same things, over and over again it becomes normal. She is now going to join in with Januhairy and grow out her own body hair which is a big challenge for her as well as many women who are getting involved. Of course a good challenge! This isn’t an angry campaign for people who don’t see how normal body hair is, but more an empowering project for everyone to understand more about their views on themselves and others. This picture was taken a few months ago. Now I am joining in with Januhairy, starting the growing process again along with the other wonderful women who have signed up! Progress pictures/descriptions from our gals will be posted throughout the month. Lets get hairy
Actually, it's not just women who feel the pressure not to be hairy. Men are supposed to just have hair on their chests, for some reason, and those many who have very hairy backs often feel ashamed and go for waxing regularly. I think I have finally gotten my son to stop this nonsense and just accept how he is.
Don't force your son to stop shaving if that's what he feels comfortable with! It should always be a choice you make, not a choice made for you by other people/society
Load More Replies...It's what's on the inside that counts!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate having to shave when boys don't even have to worry about it. It's really upsetting!
Aside from anything else, shaving or waxing body hair tends to lead to ingrown hairs and infections. It's more than worth the funny looks not to have to do it.
If I posted before-and-after pictures, I'm afraid they wouldn't be much different. At my age, I just don't seem to grow much hair anymore. But hey, whatever floats your boat, right?
"There is nothing more rare, nor more beautiful, than a woman being unapologetically herself; comfortable in her perfect imperfection. To me, that is the true essence of beauty."~Steve Maraboli

@i_am_morgie~ “…Imagine if everyone just decided that today was the day they loved themselves and embraced every part of them selves. Accepting and loving your body and your "flaws" because you know they are what makes you who you are. If you are focused on being true to yourself in every moment, you are less concerned what others think, which will lead to peace of mind. When you have nothing to hide and you can freely be yourself, there is a profound peace/confidence you will emanate to the world that will inspire others.”👏

All the girls joining in januhairy are shaving off their body hair on New Year’s Eve (Monday 31st) ready to kick start the new year with a new challenge!
We have many women who have signed up for this charity project so far, from the age range of 16-60! ✨💃✨💃 Sign up and join in while you can!
That’s great and all but number 7 is actually a woman who doesn’t shave and has been interviewed and blogged about it for years. That photo has been going in the web for ages and I bet the other photos are old as well since if you stop shaving in January, you don’t automatically get an amazing bush in weeks or even months! 😁💕
It's funny how people don't believe that they are her legs. That's the problem all around. People don't even know that women have body hair and how it looks. It's totally strange and makes girls and women hate themselves because they think they are out of the ordinary when they're not.
It is so interesting how we are used to look at sheer naked legs only on a young woman like her. My mind skips a second, then passes on. 1996 I spent my senior year in the US. Friends there were startled that I didn't shave my upper legs' peach fuzz. And shocked that my german tampons didn't have applicators back then. Times change and in many cases to the better :)
When I saw tampons in American movies or series I was always wondering why their tampons are so huge until I realized that it's a weird applicator. I mean tampons already create so much garbage, why add more unnecessary garbage to it?
Load More Replies...This is all hypocrisy on your part and on the part of all women who don't shave. You still use mascara and go the hairdresser and wear cosmetics and do manicure and pedicure and sexy dresses, don't you? None of that is natural, so why do you do it? It's the same for men also. They go the barber, they cut their fingernails and toenails, they shave their beards. Do you know how horrible a man would like if he does not do all those things? You wouldn't even want to look at him: even a monkey in the zoo would look more attractive. So please don't use this empty argument that it's not natural not to shave your armpit and leg hair. It's equally not natural to take care of everything else in your body. So let's cut the c**p and continue to make ourselves look cleaner and more groomed so that we can tolerate looking at each other, reduce infections, increase hygiene, and smell better for each other. https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&biw=1920&bih=916&tbm=isch&sa=
Good luck - no man finds this attractive. Just another Feminist BS point that will keep women single and alone. Lesbians probably thought this up.
Her septum ring + the haircut is SOO beautiful, I wish I looked like her. I also notice that people either say that she is fat, hairy or looks like a man. Not just this photo, but in the comments section of the other photo. These comments are horrible and are just reiterating the ideas that Januhairy is trying to fight. The idea that women have to look a certain way, whether that be feminine, skinny, smooth legs, be a good wife, can't get angry, etc. This challenge/article is all about self love and being comfortable in ones own skin, and I find it repulsing that people are not only going to be negative and against this beautiful form of self love, but then have the nerve to speak against that is even more disgusting. We are constantly seeing advancements in not only humans rights, but womans rights and it is the people who have the nerve to speak out against this is what is giving us the one step forward, two steps back type thing.
You're nasty, stop spewing garbage under every photo and go get a life
Load More Replies...You need to grow up and stop thinking that nature is "gross"
Load More Replies...If growing out ur bony hair is natural then why is she trimming her eyebrows and cutting her hair on her head?? Let it all grow!!
This isn't about being natural but about normalising body hair on women
Load More Replies...Everyone saying "natural state, natural state" Ok so what about i stop using toilet paper, toothbrush and toothpaste, with my dirty a*****e, yellow teeth and bad breath, i could say that's in its natural state but we all know that would be rancid. You see my point, humans are far from their natural state you idiots, we stopped being natural the first time we ever put on an animal fur for warmth. This is just gross ladies and i know i won't see a single woman walking down the street showing off this kind of body hair, it won't happen, because, feminist or not, you all know its a bit gross.
I see, HoffLensMetalHedLovesAnimalsUK, you have done a most commendable job trolling majority of the commenters on this post. Really impressed with the effort you've put in to purposelessly aggravating people. I don't understand, though, what it is you derive from such behaviour. What is it that pushes you to the point of having to blare your opinion on a matter that is subjective and independent to each individual? Although, that's quite ironic because I am doing similar in posting this comment myself. In any case, sharing one's opinion on a matter could be considered an obnoxious act. Just as a woman shaving her armpits is a subjective choice, so’s making any form of comment. The point; you're getting some kind of pleasure from winding people up by barking an unwanted and overly one-sided opinion. On the surface, it may seem that this subject is highly relatable. On the other hand, you're wasting your breath on trying to change others' opinions in such a weak form of communication.
Load More Replies...Yeah you must have been growing those chea pets for a while now. Gross
Don't understand the downvotes for this that is a completely legitimate question. I was wondering that about one of the pictures a couple up where she clearly got a bikini wax...do you just pick and choose what you grow out? (That's cool too I just don't understand)
Load More Replies...But your body hair is perfectly fine and not gross?
Load More Replies...That's my photo, here's a description: "Well I've heard it's #januhairy now, so I decided to join. I had begun to shave in elementary school after I went to a swim class and one classmate asked me why I don't have shaved armpits. I still remember the feeling of surprise and humiliation that something is wrong with my body. At this age, you can easily get the impression that if you're not doing what everyone else is doing, something is wrong with you. I often heard in high school that I would be more attractive if I didn't have such hairy hands. With time, it gradually became clear to me that the main reason why I shave is mainly the inner pressure from this learned norm and the automatic expectation of the society. It sounds banal, but I think this pressure on women is really strong and unnecessary. Now I'm satisfied with all my hair because the hairs are normal. Peace out"
Good for you! Genetics plays the biggest role is determining how our body hair grows. I have hair on my knuckles (hands and feet), yet there are people who don't have that gene for knuckle hair. When I hear disapproval for body hair it almost makes me side-eye someone for disapproving of genetics, which is something that can't be corrected with a razor.

I personally, find males with armpit hair more attractive, but as you said, "Be happy with what you want"
Load More Replies...I just started shaving not because my classmates made remarks, but because I wanted to.
Are you going to comment the same thing under every picture? Very original
Load More Replies...It’s disgusting. Why do you feel that shaving is for other people when it’s not about what they think?! It’s stupid to sit here and justify why you don’t shave the hair off of your body and only did it to fit in with society. You keep yourself groomed because it’s what women do! We’re supposed to keep ourselves clean and trimmed. To each their own I guess but this is disgusting.
Hey, if men can have hairy legs/pits and still be sexy, why can't women?
If you are ashamed of something, the problem is in your own head. Of course it is a choice for women whether they shave or not. As it is a choice to wipe your a*s after pooping. It just depends on what you feel comfortable with.
Why is it a "primal look" on women but completely normal in men?
Load More Replies...believe In the #januhairy #hairyjanuary initiative because I believe women should feel #free to love their bodies and not feel embarrassed by their #natural #hair. The fact she rolled down one sock just to show her tattoo, is rather amusing. And before people rush to reply with something snarky, I don't mean that in a horrible way.
If my hair was blonde and shiny like that, I would not shave either. It's like magical! LOL
I love how she is comfortable enough to go out in public and suntan too!
this girl looks exactally like the girl i met on suicide watch(we still talk)
Big deal if she is new? She might have fine hair. She might have lighter hair.

I have hypothyroidism, so I can literally count the hairs in my pits! Not many at all, eyebrows fell out ago, and I can go without shaving my legs foo a year, before I need to do it again! Sigh... no pit hair, is a sorry state for me!
Wow, i would do anything to find a girlfriend/wife with thick hairy armpits like a man. any woman serious about this lifestyle contact me for real. i love natural females and believe in equality. i will support any woman who quits shaving her pits then marry her.
This seems much more comfortable than trying to keep that much hair shaved.
I know, some women go through extensive and painful methods to get rid of their body hair and it would be much easier to just be natural, though I understand that all women can't do it because of the judgment they get from society
Load More Replies...Your pit hair is amazing, wish I could convince my GF to be like your armpits
If you’re a woman - are you comfortable with your body hair? I try to be, but after almost 2 years of not shaving, I’m still insecure about it. I get really self conscious when wearing tops, and I usually opt for an option where my armpits are covered. I’m a little more confident about my leg hair, but not much. I wonder if it will ever be completely chill to show my body hair, or if I will keep feeling the pressure. I don’t think society is gonna change over night, but really hope to at least see some change in 2019. A girl can hope, right? For now I will just try to do my part in showing that body hair on women is ok ✨
Thank you for being honest about feeling insecure about it. I am the same way when I experiment with not shaving.
April Dahlia, Who are you to say what is or isn't feminine? If you believe in God, that is how he made women. If you believe in evolution instead... this is how women have evolved. Either way, it's natural and normal.
We are what we are, hair is a beautiful part of us as naked apes. Girls have a great hang up about the beauty of which they were endowed. Hair is natural and beautiful, if ladies stopped shaving forthwith, the would certainly not be short of admiring men. Think about it please. Love you girls hairy or not
I support you of having hairy armpit, leg & body hair. It's human nature. I'm impress of your thoughts. Well, body hair it is sexy.
Really!? If youre not comfortable with it then why not just shave? No one cares anyway....

Just to let you you all know this is me and that i am happy letting my armpit hair grow and dying my head hair red. I do not do it for your acceptance or because you think I should dye my armpit hair too. I do it because sometimes i do not want to shave and like armpit fuzz :) Women do not have to have smooth armpits if they do not want to. You go girls!
you can also grow out nipple hairs and vagina hairs as well as booty hairs
Clearly... that's not a natural shade of red. Even so, good on her!
Load More Replies...I am a man and I shave my armpits and pubic hair. It is less smelly, more hygienic, and looks much better. You still go to the hair dresser and use makeup, and do your fingernails, don't you? All that is not natural either. So where do you draw the line between what is natural and what is healthy and decent looking?
That's about how hairy I am, which is strange because I have very dark head hair, but blonde leg and arm hair.
I could go without shaving for three years and the only hairy things would be my pits. My sisters hate me (not really!) because I never have to shave my legs.
oooooh....LOL I get it. At first I thought you were being vulgar. Now I realize you're just being a middle schooler. Which I have nothing against LOL

This is not about being natural, it's about choices. They enhance the natural part of it as an argument to let females be. There is an unspoken common social pressure on females (yep, from underage girls to mature ladies) that obbligates us to remove body hair. I won't say it comes from men, no, not exclusively, women are guilty too in this story. Anyway, you get the point. True that! It hurts to shave my legs like every hair follicle turns into a tiny needle and swells up and looks gross like pox. Yes I've used every product out there. Only thing I haven't tried is laser removal, but I'm at risk of nasty scarring.
