I Found Inspiration In A Perfume Bottle

A creative partnership has paved a new path for my artwork through a rarely explored source.

My aromatic and colorful collaboration with Raw Spirit Fragrances has begun and it’s built a unique bridge to inspiration. I am one of several Hudson Valley artists selected for this unique opportunity.

At first I thought, “How can fragrance spark the visual arts? These creative worlds seemed unrelated.”. I was so glad to be wrong.

In my studio, art and scent collided and the effect was real— it gave me an impetus like never before. The scent I chose as my catalyst was ‘Spring Jasmine’ from Raw Spirit’s Wild Spirit collection and now I’m known as their ‘Wild Card’! This light, floral, joyful scent with an understated strength created the story I had to tell through paint, and resin.

One afternoon, I had seen images of a Mexican parade with cascades of beautiful flowers, stunning colors and joyful faces. Just as with choosing ‘Spring Jasmine’, I knew immediately that I had found the visual muses for my painting. I combined all I had seen and felt in the parade with the qualities of the fragrance and created ‘Sonic Latin’.

The fragrance triggered a flood of emotions and transportive memories of family, community, and celebration. The smell of joy blossomed and, after a few brushstrokes, so began the start of something remarkably beautiful. ‘Sonic Latin’ tells my story of ‘Spring Jasmine’ with vibrant, bold colors in a contemporary portrait. My connection to ‘Spring Jasmine’ became stronger as I developed these experiences and their relationship on my canvas.

Incorporating fragrance into my artistic process has given me the ability to develop and transform further. I’m excited for the future and what evolves naturally over time on this new, scented path.
