Humans tend to take their habits for granted. Everything seems self-evident until the perspective shifts. It forces us to reflect on the way we are: humans are not all sunshine and rainbows, as the saying goes. We also have a darker side that we prefer to be swept under the rug.

Barbara Daniels has a calling to reveal these dark things that people do. She shifts the perspective by swapping roles of humans and animals, which in turn raises our awareness of how we behave with other animals, which is brutal and unethical most of the time. There's much room to grow for our species. Her illustrations are a sobering reminder that our society is far from perfect. Though we tend to admire the progress of our own species, we tend to forget that we did it at the price of others.

Just like psycopaths, child abusers and pedophiles, hunters are the worst kind of human beings in existance. How can u take a pic of urself smiling proundly with the corpse u just killed? Not forgeting to mentioning that a lion, a tiger, an elephant, an eagle, any animal, worths countless times more than a single hunter that couldnt even be used as food for animals cause of its toxicity. F**k i hate hunters.

Agreed! Trophy hunters don't come from the bottom of the barrel - they come from beneath the barrel. They are cowards with egos the size of Alaska and hearts the size of electrons.

Some people are too quick pointing fingers, but I really like your comment. Given the context of this art's concept, I choose to believe your comment was referring to both the human AND the lion. And I like your attitude towards the self-righteous reactionists too. Thank you for being awesome!

The only way it is justified is when it is for food. If you can get food without this then it is not justified. The only situation where you can't get proper good without hunting is living off grid.

Barbara shared about her "Dominion over Man" with Bored Panda: "It was an unexpected surprise when this art came into my life. The idea of exploring the relationships between humans and animals first came to me while I was eating chicken wings on holiday in Strasbourg, France. I sketched what the situation might look like if the roles were reversed. The idea resonated with me from that moment on and I began to see the world in a new light. I started to focus on the role reversal concept after moving to Berlin in 2013."

I think it's declawing shown here. Cat claws grow directly from the bone so removing one is pretty much like snipping the end of the finger.

They aren’t cutting the nails only. This is how cats are declawed. They cut off the first knuckle of each digit to declaw.

declawing cats should be animal abuse. When someone does that, it is basically cutting off parts of their fingers.

Hate me all you want, but if you declaw a cat, then you deserve the same done to you and you are a disgusting piece of human trash. Go ahead and cut off the first knuckle of your fingers because that is exactly what declawing is.

Note for anyone: Look closely. That isn't a nail. It's the fingertip from the last joint onward. That's what "declawing" is for cats: Removing bone. As a result, declawed cats often suffer behavioral issues (who wouldn't) and long-term pain. They also lack a fundamental aid in climbing, and self-defense. TLDR: DECLAWING IS AMPUTATION!

Factually, yes, calf hutches rather than veal crates. Calf hutches are legal and have "welfare" standards, while veal crates are banned in many countries. Both are cruel beyond rational comprehension. I hope that Barbara Daniels never publishes a drawing based on a veal crate, I honestly don't think I could cope with that.

This is what happens to dairy cow's babies if they aren't killed immediately. Cows need to give birth to produce milk so they are kept in a cycle of artificial insemination, pregnancy, birth, stolen babies, milking (machine milking which can cause sores and wounds on the udders). This goes on until their milk production starts slowing down and then they are sent to slaughter. Think about these cows and calves next glass of milk or piece of cheese you eat.

For once it's appropriate to censor teh peepee, because most circus performing male animals are subject to a full penectomy before their "performace debut". Apparently people who don't mind taking their kids to watch animals being tortured also have a massive problem with aforesaid kids getting a fleeting glimpse of tiger d**k.

The artist also told us what the main goal of the illustrations is: "The goal of my art is to learn about our world by holding a mirror up to humanity and imagining life from the perspective of the many species dominated by the human race. It’s important to me to reverse each situation as accurately as possible, so I need to do a lot of research before beginning each piece. I learn so much from my research, and I receive a lot of feedback from people who believe that my work is spreading awareness."

Purebred animals are often inbred, especially rare breeds. White tigers are horribly inbred - most cubs don't survive infancy, and those that do frequently have horrid birth defects such as misshapen heads and curved spines.

I could be wrong here, but I *think* the artist has cleverly picked the dog breeds which are the least deformed by fashion-breeding (collies, 'working' spaniels and hounds) to represent the humans? To make the point that some breeds are physiologically quite close to healthy wild canids, and some are so extremely overbred that they're completely incapable of independent survival.

This is the reality, unless the animal can get the child to safety. The gorilla they put down when the child fell into his enclosure, Hamurabe? He tried to help get the kid to the door for trainers / attendants. Yet they shot him dead! Why? Because he helped, and they felt powerless, and it was the parents’ fault for not keeping a closer eye on him, or them putting him up when it clearly says, do not put children up on railing. So their kid gets hurt, a compassionate gorilla, because of a humans’ error, was put down like he was nothing.

Elephant rides cause spine deformities that result in the animal being killed. Fun as it may be, elephant rides contribute to them being killed once deemed no longer useful.

The artist mentioned what the most difficult part of these illustrations is: "The research I do for my work can be difficult, because it’s often very depressing. I tackle some pretty dark topics, and sometimes it affects my mood. Another difficult part of my work is the process itself. It takes about a month to complete each piece, and my chosen medium of pen and ink can be pretty unforgiving. Once that ink hits the watercolour paper, there’s no going back! Mistakes can’t be erased or covered up."

I had one boss through a temp agency who would call new people into his office deliberately. You would walk in and look right because that's where he sat but when you turned to go there was a huge moose head on the wall. I suppose he enjoyed the shock and awe but I didn't react at all and just walked out. I didn't last long - LOL - so gratifying. I have no respect for people who don't respect animals and appreciate them - Let's see you go out without your high-powered gun and take one of them down.

Barbara tells us more about what topics she covers and tells us more about her style: "I cover all topics relating to animals in all aspects of modern life. Some of the topics are gruesome, while others are a bit more lighthearted. My style is a mix between realism and caricature, and I like to focus on details. I started to focus on the role reversal concept after moving to Berlin in 2013. I still have a long list of ideas for new pictures, so I will keep going with my 'Dominion over Man' series for some time to come."

The artist shares what inspired her to keep creating: "I really enjoy creating my own parallel universe with this art, and I still learn so much about our world from each picture I create. That alone would be enough to keep me going, but I also get motivation from the positive feedback I receive from people who are inspired by my work."

I won't speak for the assholes who don't bother to drive carefully or the ones who laugh about hitting an animal, but in Australia out in the bush where I live, just driving down your road in the middle of the day a wallaby will come out of nowhere and hop in front of your car. (Or worse, be hiding in the bush chilling, then when you're right on top of it, it hops onto the road. You can only just see it before it's too late if it's on the drivers side) I try to avoid them the best I can and drive real slow when it's dark, but there is always one that I can't miss :(

Many years ago coming back from a trip to the coast we drove by a group of people on the side of the road. There was a coyote who had been hit and it was obvious from his injuries that it was not going to survive. But it was going to die slowly and painfully. So the people on the side of the road we're waiting for someone who had a rifle so they could put the poor thing out of its misery quickly. Point being, just because you couldn't have stopped from hitting it doesn't mean you don't have a moral obligation to make sure it isn't lying there suffering when you leave

Barbara gives some advice for artists or people who want to pursue art: "Don’t be afraid to tackle difficult and uncomfortable topics in your art. When I began working on this series in 2013, I received a lot of negative feedback from friends and family who couldn’t understand why I was painting such weird pictures. Although I sometimes had my own doubts, I stayed true to my vision for four years before I started getting positive feedback. Looking back, I’m happy that I didn’t give up on this idea just to please others."

Fun fact: alligators were an endangered species in the late 1800s and early 1900s, to the point where there were often more hunters than gators in the swamps and bayous during hunting season. Thankfully, they were saved through conservation efforts. This is referenced in Red Dead Redemption 2.

The artist tells us more about herself, her life, and her journey: "I grew up in a small village in County Galway, Ireland. After graduating with a fine art degree from GMIT Ireland in 2005, I lived in Southern California for almost eight years before spontaneously moving to Berlin, Germany in 2013."

I don't want to put words in the artist's mouth, but I see this as maybe a more subtle one. In this picture the meerkat people see themselves as a real family - cosy burrow, pictures on the wall, coffee in the pot, Dad hogging the remote as usual - and the humanimal relationship as "just" about reproduction? Referencing how simplistically we see animals, when any behavioural scientist - or anyone who's watched wild ducks on a lake or wild rabbits in a field - can tell us that they actually do form strong deep pair bonds and family bonds?

This is called gavage (I think). Its basically when animals (usually geese or ducks being used for foie gras) are force fed through tubes being shoved down their throats. I forgot to add that this is being banned now is some places.

The industry of foie gras. Geese are forced feeded with a tube inserted in their throat with a food that will enlarge their livers so the guys can make more paste out of it. Imagine being forced feeded everyday, all ur life, with something so unhealthy that makes ur liver sick.

Right on! Years ago I took in a pregnant stray. She may have been tossed out just because she got "knocked up." How irresponsible, getting a cute little kitten, not having her spayed, and then blaming her for getting preggo. Luckily Ragamuffin found me, and I found responsible homes for all of her little ones - and had her fixed. Rest in peace, Rags.

I've always found it really bizarre when people justify fishing because they release it. Like I'd rather you catch the animal because you're gonna eat it, not just for the fun of watching it thrash around? Imagine if people spoke the same way about terrestrial hunting. "Yeah I hunt but it's ethical because I shoot the deer in the leg and then let it go."

Delicious! I love me my human with a large carrot up his ass! And also, cut off the testicles a week or two before slaughter, so the testosterone cannot compromise the taste. Or, even better - slaughter before adolescence. Is smoother anyway.

Maybe I've misunderstood this one, but I think part of the point of the picture is the little humanimal child in the middle engaging in intelligent tool use (making a toy), while the monkeymen are ignoring her natural behaviour and going "lol it drink pepsicoke just like us so funni!" ?

Even if they say they get puppies/kittens from "reputable breeders" pet stores usually get their animals from Puppy Mills, which are horrible places for the creatures trapped inside of them, especially the trapped breeding adults. There are several videos available, if you can stomach them, on YouTube showing animals being rescued by heroes of the ASPCA, the Animal Rescue Corps, and National Mill Dog Rescue to name a few out of many more. For a primer, read: https://www.humanesociety.org/all-our-fights/stopping-puppy-mills

This one just reminds me of my dog Tara (a malamute). She LOVES little dogs, but, understandably, until the owner knows she's friendly and won't eat their chihuahua, they don't let their dog say hi. That's why dog parks are awesome.

When unleashed, besides the obvious issues for fellow pets or other humans also other factors should be taken into account. Letting dogs roam free, unleashed, in nature is what killing pregnant roe's or bambi's right now [season]. Dog poo can cause serious issues for cows[Neospora-parasite] if they take a dump in a field where cows graze. Same like having your cat roaming free this season as birds are mating or when young bird chicks start to fly out. Pet owners should be aware about it and take their responsibillity.

To be fair, a lot of humans hate fireworks too, but were called killjoys.... certain mental health problems, ptsd and similar, can be very badly triggered by repeated loud bangs. Fireworks should either be completely banned (especially as they stink up the atmosphere too), or at least make ones that aren't so extremely noisy, please?

I agree. Not only is it bad for the environment and the wildlife, but it can be incredibly stressful for some people too. I’m also one of those people and refuse to go to firework shows cause it’ll cause panic attacks. I’d rather stay home with my pets where we can all be comfortable with soft noises (and cuddles of course)

Once my family discovered a little mom mouse with all her little baby mice in our house. So cute, so precious. Little mouse mom rushed out the place when her nest was discovered. Everyone in my family was like “ dont touch it! Ull get infected!” Yeah they would have been right. They wanted to kill them, to just get rid of them like if they were toxic garbage. NO FCKIN WAY! WHY THE FCK? I took the babies away n put them in place where they would be safe. I thought that's the best i could do under the conditions in that moment. After a moment, the little babies where gone. I really hope her mom found her and took them to a better place and didnt eat then or something like that... the worst case scenario was a death/death fate for the mice family.

There are some really good, live-capture mouse traps out there. We have one we've used several times and also loaned it to neighbors. We catch the little creature, give it some food and water (a clean eyedropper works great for feeding the water), then release it in a nearby greenbelt.

Yes, please don't use rat traps/mouse traps that kill the rat/mouse. Instead, use the ones that trap them (and keep a bit of food and water in there) and check them regularly. If you find a rat/mouse in there, just release it. No need to kill >_<

Is it really asked too much to take animals we don't love to share a bed with outside and leave them alive? They may be stupid, they may suck in literal sense of the word, or in other sense, they may be ugly, they may look terrifying under a magnifier, but still, their life to them doesn't mean any less than ours do to us.

YEAH!! Ive been thinkin, who are we to kill insects? A “supreme race”? HUMANS?? “kill it with fire” when u see australianish giant spiders, i understand. I guess im the extremist one, but i cant kill the insects. Ants, mosquitoes, spiders... u dont know how frustrating it is to try to catch a moskito and failing 1000 times until, if u have luck, catch it and throw it out of the window n the close it. Its sad when u catch one too and u end up squeezing it. Thats how my summers are.

Sometimes? People are trying to exterminate each other from the dawn of humanity - crime against humanity was born out of crimes against animals - that's not to say they are comparable, humans never suffer as much as animals do; praying for peace and happiness and denying the same to all other sentient beings will not work, never did, never will be.

Funny how the difference human/animal is used to defend animal testing, when any value of animal testing would come from their similarities with humans. In fact, there is so much difference between animals and humans, that any animal testing is basically worthless to study human health and medicine. Many kinds of animals are used (cats, dogs, monkeys, mice, rats, etc), and there is no way to tell beforehand whether a treatment will translate from a specific animal to humans, or which animal will be most similar to human. More often than not, a treatment found a non-human species don't translated into a human treatment, and vice-versa. The whole thing is just a bad habit blended with big funds from governments and companies (because human health is important, whatever the cost) and the cognitive bias of scientists who want to protect their jobs by keeping these research funds, which are really only (sometimes) useful for veterinarians.

I wonder how many of these people who keep gushing about animal research being "cruel" are actual vegetarians or vegans. Because the regulations and official supervision in animal testing is stricter than in any other form of animal husbandry - and definitely stricter than in dairy or meat farming. So if you are against animal testing while eating a hamburger you are - what was the word again? - oh, yeah: a c*nt! You are a c*nt.

There are so many methods of non-animal testing that are reliable and more accurate than heinously torturing animals: cell cultures, human tissue, computational methods, microfluidic devices (organs - on - chips), and organoids. Numerous doctors agree that vivisection retards scientific progress because animal models are unlike naturally occurring human diseases and injuries.

Does anyone out there want to be the guinea pig for next proposed cancer d**g? Because each new cancer d**g is just a poison of degree. Cell culture and computer models don't hack it showing all of the possible interactions within the body. So, want to play the game and see whether the new d**g will kill you or cure you first and whether you're going to keep your normally functioning organs in the process?

While I imagine it's confusing for bees to be smoked and have a portion of their honey harvested, bee keepers care for their bees and with the steep decline in wild populations many crops would also be in trouble.

Agree 100%. I've only known a couple people who kept bees but each one cared deeply about them and did everything they could to make sure they thrive. They also go out and take swarms or hives out of situations they would be exterminated in to relocate somewhere safer. There's some human/animal/insect interactions that benefit everyone

My dad has been a beekeeper for over 40 years. I would disagree with saying he is actually hurting the bees. He always replaces the honey with something so the bees do not starve or miss out. He also is able to keep the hive more healthy by controlling mites etc. The whole goal is to keep the bees happy and healthy! I do agree it would be very weird if our roles were reversed!

Mass breeding of honeybees affects the populations of other nectar-foraging insects, including other bees. The numbers of native bumblebees have declined. Beekeepers aim to harvest the max of honey. When they remove honey, they replace it with sugar substitute but it lacks the essential micro-nutrients of honey. Honey bees are bred to increase productivity. This selective breeding narrows the gene pool and increases susceptibility to disease and large-scale die-offs. Diseases are also caused by importing different species of bees. The diseases spread to other pollinators, disputing the myth that honey production is good for our environment. Also, hives can be culled post-harvest to keep costs down. Queen bees often have wings clipped to prevent them leaving to produce a new colony, which would lessen profit. The honey industry, like many, is profit-driven where the welfare of the bees is secondary to commercial gain.

Generally speaking the bee keepers are the best of the best. Their bees are well looked after, smoking is only to allow harvesting then there are those who do not use smoking any more they have the honey tap system, which drains the honey without disturbing the bees.

I do believe that the bees being smoked must feel some kind of pain and confusion, but honey is still pretty important. On top of that, I'm pretty sure beekeepers actually care for their bees to the extent that they can-

I don't see anything wrong with feeding them, so long as the food you're giving them won't kill/hurt them (like bread for ducks).

This one's interesting. What would a city centre habitat look like if pigeons designed then and we were just an endemic cohabiting species? Is the building on the right an office space reimagined as a roosting colony cliff? (But serious point about "nutrient pollution". Dropping your chips can mess up a local food-web so much more than a non-biologist might realise.)

I think that's exactly the point though. Humans are only technically "omnivores" in the sense that we can - just about - digest meat. But we're in no sense "obligate carnivores", we don't need meat to live, any more than a cow or a sheep or a goat does. The idea that meat protein is necessary for a healty balanced diet is pure advertising dressed up as science.

False binary. Disease rips through captive animal populations in a way that would be mathematically impossible in the wild. This isn't about killing vs letting die. This is about breeding, cramming and industrial warehousing of animals.

Hey now- spaying and neutering is important. The more animals reproduce, the more babies they can have, the more go homeless. Fixing animals keeps animals from starving in the streets.

Spaying and neutering your pets is important. There are already so many strays on the streets, and when they aren't spayed or neutered, it gets out of control. Cats and dogs multiple f a s t. Many many argue that women need their tubes tied and men need vasectomies, but when it comes down to it, those surgeries are much more invasive and it takes so much more healing, especially for women. Animals aren't able to control their urges and they aren't able to use protection. Humans are able to though. We're in so much more control than animals. Spaying and neutering your pets is so important.

Jackie: How do you know animals don't have souls? They are kinder than humans. If they are treated with love they give 10 fold back. While I get the point of this panel, I do support neutering pets. Thousands of animals are euthanized because there are more abandoned or put up for adoption than can be adopted out. You can't not be 100% sure your pet will not procreate unless they are neutered. A lot of shelters insist the animal be neutered before they let you adopt or make you promise to do it when it is old enough. Another thing: Get you pet chipped. Many, many animals have been returned to owners, even several YEARS later..because it was chipped and they kept their contact information up to date in the data base.

Replying to Jackie. First of all PROOF?!?!?! You have absolutely no proof of them not having souls. Second of all, if you won’t start this argument, I one hundred percent will. Animals DO have souls. They CAN feel pain. They DO experience emotions. They CAN suffer. So what if we’re slightly smarter than they are? Who cares?!?! I have a bird, her name is Skittles, and she has feelings. She gets mad. She gets hungry. She gets happy. She has a soul. I DARE YOU to find proof she doesn’t have one. Human beings are terrible. Animals are better than we are, yet we act like we’re better than them. Animals care if one of their own dies. Animals don’t murder each other ruthlessly for no reason. Humans do. And humans treat other beings like s**t. Animals don’t do that. Animals definitely have souls, and they’re better than we are. Jackie, your comment needs more downvotes.

Sheep need shearing because we've bred them like that. Primitive sheep have fleece that can be 'rooed' which mean plucked off, or if they're wild, just falls off. The reason we have so many sheep that need shearing is because we breed them for meat. If we didn't eat sheep (lamb) then there wouldn't be nearly so that need to undergo shearing. And yes many smallholders treat their sheep well, it's the large commercial breeders where time is money that end up injuring lots of sheep during shearing.

Ok for all of you who don't have any clue why this is bad, do you think sheep in the wild NEED to be sheered? The answer is no, they were literally bred so that we could get their wool or they will overheat, don't kid yourselves thinking this is for the sheep.

    Terilee Bruyere

Wild species of sheep don't grow the massive amounts of sheep that many domestic breeds do, so of course they don't need to be sheared. Domestic sheep breeds are not wild sheep and would have more troubles than just the lack of shearing if they were left to their own in the wild.
