This is what happens when you don't blindly assume your country is the greatest in the world - you get to learn from other countries. And that way when one learns a new better way of doing something we can all improve.

In the USA, once your born, you can p**s off... they don't care, no help for the family after birth, thousands in bills, no leave for mom or dad, no school lunches, kids getting blown away in schools. Hells yeah we's pro-life! Pricks!

We started doing this in Canada too. My nieces came home with these when they were born. It really doesn't cost much in tax dollars, but these can be critical to newborns. Helps reduce SIDS and is a lifesaver to new parents below the poverty line. I personally think they should also come with 2 years of formula/diapers but that's a battle for the future

Or suucial democracy! Being from a baseline social democratic country, I’d have to say it’s not so bad. A bit bureaucratic, very fond of numbers and schedules, but it does save a lot of people from things like poverty and death. Fair trade off, at least to me. I like paying taxes - it goes to things like this. And free health care. And free child care. And… Ok, the list is massive, but you get my point. Suucial democracy for the win! Or at least, you know, participation price!

Innovative design can surely make a world of difference in our everyday lives. Take a simple trash can, for example—sure, it does the job as is. But a designer might think, "Why stop there?" By adding a section for recycling, they’re not just improving functionality—they’re helping the environment too.

Sometimes, it's the simplest tweak that transforms a product from "just okay" to "wow, this is actually really helpful!" When designers think outside the box, they create solutions that can make daily life smoother for us.

Not just these. Public water fountains, porta potties, and cooling mister stations around the city. The city really does try to help, sometimes. Though right now we're being targeted by a lot of conservative hate that's trying to cut funding to a lot of programs. It's very annoying when federal candidates try to f**k with the good thing we have going here. Let us take care of our own, thank you very much.

These have been around in my state at least for the past 30 years. However they have been improved upon in design significantly. Currently our neighborhood park offer these style of wheel chair swings, modified swings that allow an adult to piggy back with their child, a sensory area with musical instruments, and even a giant board that lists simple phrases in braille, pictures in sign languages (yes, please, play, thank you, etc) that our kids can use to communicate with others on the playground.

But behind every clever idea is a lot of effort and creativity. Designers spend countless hours brainstorming, testing, and refining their ideas to make sure they work perfectly.

It’s not just about making things look good; it's about creating something that genuinely improves how we live.

The subways in Boston have (or long ago had) braille signs beneath the signs with the names of each subway station... even though they were located on the far side of the track from the platform. Nowadays, I'd think maybe somehow someone could scan them, but this was the 90s.... You'd have to cross the electrical tracks to read them.

A while ago I visited a museum in Berlin which did exactly this. Not only was the painting reproduced as a relief, they also used different materials so you could feel what was shown in the painting, e.g. using fabric in the feelable version where the painting showed the dress of a woman. Unfortunately there were only a few of those feelable representations.

On a less fun note. My daughter came back from visiting her dad in the Midlands (UK) and she said that the Morrisons (supermarket) toilet had blue lights. This is to make it harder for users to find veins!

If these things are so great, why do I never see them in use? When I trained to be a phlebotomist, we were told about these. Then I worked in hospitals and clinics and none of them had one. I externed in a trauma center that had all the latest and greatest gadgets. But if we had a hard stick that seemed impossible, they just sent a different phlebotomist to try. I had a guy tap a vein in a patient's leg because her hands and arms were a no go. But no one was pulling out this gadget.

I had three phlebotomists try me in the emergency dept only twice and I begged them to keep going. Eventually another man came with a sonogram to find my veins but not before he tried to put one in my neck on both sides Why did I have to go through all that torture with this around?!

I wish my doctor had this. They spend eternity trying to find the "right vein" and then always go for the hand. I may be almost 70 but I can and will scream like a 3 year old if anything is said about sticking a needle in my HAND! Find a vein in my arm or I'm either going to throw a tantrum or go home. Or both.

My mum worked in a hospital for 25 years and they needed these machines in her day oncology ward. Unfortunately, they didn’t have the funding for them because they’re $25,000 for one machine. One machine. Sorry, let me rephrase that: they claimed they didn’t have the funding for it and it was a private hospital.

Also, they help teach how to hold a pencil; Kids who struggled could even get these triangle-shaped rubber pieces to place over their pencils Another option was crayons with one side flat, but they were always awkward to hold.

Stretchers are a vital tool in emergency situations, but they do come with a few challenges. For one, they aren’t always the easiest to maneuver through tight spaces or rough terrain, which can slow down transport when time is critical.

Enter Yu-Hsin Wu, a student at Taiwan’s Shih Chien University who designed the inflatable stretcher. One of its best features is how portable it is compared to traditional stretchers. Since it's inflatable, you can easily deflate it, fold it up, and take it in remote or hard-to-reach areas.

This was offered to us at the university where I work. The catch was that since we have gendered bathrooms, the period products would have to be displayed in ALL bathrooms to accommodate transgendered people. Our university refused all of it. Heaven forbid that anyone should have to see a period product if they do not need it personally. FFS.

Probably no where, unless they have"pay to use" public toilets. But it's good food thought that bathroom functions and hygiene needs have long included provided toilet paper, paper towels, soap, hand sanitizer, and even cologne...but it used to cost if you were in public and got your period unexpectedly

I don't disagree...but do we stop trying to help/support/encourage/convenience/educate or look after each other? No, we still work to provide food and services and community to people who lie or break the law or who are simply bad eggs. And we do that because if we stop all together, we miss the opportunity to do all those things for the honest people. Maybe don't be so negative about something as benign as sunscreen

Not sure if they are overseas too, but this could be in Australia, because the Starlight foundation runs the children's programs at hospitals here. My brothers spent a lot of time at the Royal Childrens Hospital in Melbourne, which meant I spent a lot of time there too, visiting. The Starlight Room is an amazing escape for sick kids and their siblings! My sister loved going when we visited my brother, she still talks about it 14 years after our youngest brother died. They had the pictured setup at least as early as 2004 for patients that can't leave their rooms. I remember my middle brother playing games on it with the youngest one.

These look similar to the pasty, traditional food in Cornwall, England, particularly in coal mining areas. The pastry edge used to bear name/initials of the owner, but was also made big enough that the miner could hold the pastry part with his coal-stained hands, while he ate the main filled part. The empty pastry was thrown away.

All the people saying they'd be afraid the TV would fall on them need to take a moment and think that the dentist's office would more than likely mount the TV on the ceiling VERY securely so it wouldn't fall on their patients. I'm not trying to invalidate anyone's fears, but logic would suggest this won't happen.

This sounds like something they would only do for men's shirts. Women's shirts on the other hand are made of materials that contain fibers that will put microscopic scratches on your glasses, and our pockets are too small to hold a microfiber clothed, if they are even on the garment at all.

"Glass manifestation" is a mandatory requirement for glass doors and walls in the EU, to prevent injuries. You cannot have continuous unmarked glass walls, and must place a sticker, or have part of the glazing made opaque, to warn users about the glass.

I'd much rather there was a design on the glass to make it visible rather than a sticker saying "I'm here to make it visible." Use good design instead.

I once walked right through a glass window next to the glass door. No bar across the middle of it, or the door next to it, no way to differentiate the two. The glass wasn't safety glass. Thankfully only got one cut on the ball of my thumb. It was scary.

Chased my brother through a sliding glass door my Mamaw had just cleaned. He went right through it. Took me two months of mowing yards to pay her back. Worth the laugh though, he was ok, didn't even get cut.

I found that people will see a sign on the door if the sign is a little crooked. Place it straight and perfect they don't see it at all. Crooked, they will tell you that your sign is squish LOL!

Some people speak a language better that they read it. It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility they could identify the character in their language and speak it in another more comfortably. Just for your information: this is definitely not the norm. Never seen this and I only use public transport. But I would really like it. Another but: we have several book shelves on private property or public places where you can get books or stuff for free and it becomes more and more. At least from my home I could reach three tiny free shelves in five minutes, more in ten (by foot)

I live in Germany as well and if the buses in my city had them those books would be flying- the bus drivers have no fear they just go even if someone else is in the way (I'm surprised there's not more bus related accidents but then again everyone else knows to be careful around them)

And most padlocks can be opened by just banging on them. Security isn't about stopping smart and determined thieves, it's understanding that the reason they are thieves is probably because they're dumb and lazy, and putting up minimal barriers to slow them down enough that someone will notice they're trying to steal and tell them off. No security measure is impenetrable, but all you need is barely enough.

These are great. We have had them set up at many concert venues in Australia now, but unfortunately the 'security' guards have not been trained well about what they are for and have barred people at times. Most famously the woman who plays a character with autism (who has it herself) on the show Heartbreak High (the remake). She was stopped from using one because she 'didn't look like she had autism'.

They have found that even cardboard cut outs of uniformed officers is enough to reduce rates of theft. A 'police officer' holding a speed gun was shanghaied (forced to join the crew) by a group from the Royal Navy who were in port for the day. PC Flat sailed away for a year and a day (almost) and was returned when the ship was next in port.

Back when New Port Richie, FL was a small town they had 4 patrol officers and 5 cars. They got a mannequin and would randomly move the 5th car around town and put the uniformed mannequin holding a radar gun in it.

Otherwise they spin and/or don’t get scanned correctly. If they don’t get scanned, the tracking numbers don’t get updated and people get all mad. Those cake are pretty awful. They used to have a TV show and a lot of hype, with long lines to buy the overpriced cakes. I had the chance to try some both from their Hoboken place and at their Vegas location, and my god they are horrendous. All of them are basically a ton of vanilla flavored butter with way too much sugar over dry sponge cake with a weird texture. There is little in terms of flavor, everything is just color and sugar.

The Place I Work At Installed Fire Alarm-Like Boxes That Call The Police Or The Hospital Instead

The Place I Work At Installed Fire Alarm-Like Boxes That Call The Police Or The Hospital Instead

The system calls the police or the hospital directly with the address so they can get there as quickly as possible without having to waste time telling someone what the address is, etc.
The police one also triggers an announcement over the loudspeaker with the "Run, hide, fight" strategy for active shooters. It also starts strobe lights outside the building so we know not to come in and simultaneously texts, calls, and emails everyone who is in the building, telling them that there’s an emergency. The text the leadership gets includes a link to view the live security cam footage. You can also respond to the text, and their system will look for keywords to give the police, too, like if a couple people respond with "red shirt" or something.

Looked into those a while ago. These things are massively inefficient and waste a lot of energy for what can easily be accomplished by shoveling and some salt. For a 15x10 ft driveway you are spending on average 1.5$/hr, and it would require several hours of continuous operation to melt any amount of accumulated snow. When you turn it off, the surface is prone to ice buildup from melted snow. Also, the life of the driveway surface is reduced from heat stress and any kind of maintenance is extremely expensive.

These would be really helpful for people who are not physically able to "easily accomplish" shoveling and salting an entire two car drive way. Also...with all the other environmental stuff going on in the world and your worried about heat pollution from a driveway...really?? Some of you guys are way too uptight around here. Maybe just say "hey that's neat" and move on. Sheesh 😐

A house in my sister's neighborhood had this. Their garage is in the rear of the house in the basement. The ramp beside their house going down is so steep that its hard to get up in dry weather. Ice would make it unusable. (You can shovel snow, but Ice doesn't leave until it decides to.)
