Scotland’s Baby Box. Free Essentials For Every Newborn To Give Them The Best Start
I love that other countries have adapted this. Still have to gloat that Finland has offered these for every mother-to-be since 1949.
This is what happens when you don't blindly assume your country is the greatest in the world - you get to learn from other countries. And that way when one learns a new better way of doing something we can all improve.
Load More Replies...In the USA, once your born, you can p**s off... they don't care, no help for the family after birth, thousands in bills, no leave for mom or dad, no school lunches, kids getting blown away in schools. Hells yeah we's pro-life! Pricks!
We started doing this in Canada too. My nieces came home with these when they were born. It really doesn't cost much in tax dollars, but these can be critical to newborns. Helps reduce SIDS and is a lifesaver to new parents below the poverty line. I personally think they should also come with 2 years of formula/diapers but that's a battle for the future
Also, the condoms are a VERY nice touch. A lot of people do not realize you can immediately get pregnant after birth. I hope there's info about that too
Load More Replies...Or suucial democracy! Being from a baseline social democratic country, I’d have to say it’s not so bad. A bit bureaucratic, very fond of numbers and schedules, but it does save a lot of people from things like poverty and death. Fair trade off, at least to me. I like paying taxes - it goes to things like this. And free health care. And free child care. And… Ok, the list is massive, but you get my point. Suucial democracy for the win! Or at least, you know, participation price!
Load More Replies...Our first one in 2000 was very nice. Second one in 2002 was sh1te, advertising stuff, lots of unnecessary baby-items, and very little of the useful items. (Belgium)
Yes, most people don't realise you can get pregnant soon after birth, even before your period returns.

Innovative design can surely make a world of difference in our everyday lives. Take a simple trash can, for example—sure, it does the job as is. But a designer might think, "Why stop there?" By adding a section for recycling, they’re not just improving functionality—they’re helping the environment too.
Sometimes, it's the simplest tweak that transforms a product from "just okay" to "wow, this is actually really helpful!" When designers think outside the box, they create solutions that can make daily life smoother for us.
The Shape Of This Handrail Is Different
As the diagram shows, it provides better support for people who rely on handrails to support their weight while going up and down stairs. It makes sense ergonomically.
As someone with knee issues who counts on handrails for support, I would find this extremely helpful.
As someone who's back looks like twelve miles of twisted roads, this should be mandated for all handrails!
If you're headed up, it's brilliant. Going in the opposite direction might prove to be a bit problematic. It'd be interesting, to give it a test.
Great Reminder That Little Things Can Make A Big Difference And That It Does Not Take Much To Be Kind
Not just these. Public water fountains, porta potties, and cooling mister stations around the city. The city really does try to help, sometimes. Though right now we're being targeted by a lot of conservative hate that's trying to cut funding to a lot of programs. It's very annoying when federal candidates try to f**k with the good thing we have going here. Let us take care of our own, thank you very much.
They do this in the country I live in and it's shocking to see how many people are collecting the cans and it's not just the homeless because so many people over here are living beneath the poverty line now
I’m in the U.S. and we leave our crushed cans in a bag next to the garbage can. They’re always gone the next day.
Load More Replies...Giving people down on their luck some dignity, it's just the right thing to do.
Here in Japan, we're admonished not to flatten cans, 'cuz they can't be as-easily-processed, by the re-cycler. I'd absolutely LOVE to hear from a professional, why this is so.
this used to be such a nice idea until fentanyl @ $1 a hit came along.
This Playground Had A Swing For Wheelchairs
In my area we have an incredible public playground that is designed for kids of any ability. There are many items like this. The idea is for ALL children to be able to play together. I was blown away the first time we went there.
In horse shows, if your pony/horse is prone to kick, you put a red ribbon on the tail. Imagine having these in the ring!
Yeah, two of my brothers have used them, and they died in 2002 and 2010 so they have been around a long time!
Load More Replies...These have been around in my state at least for the past 30 years. However they have been improved upon in design significantly. Currently our neighborhood park offer these style of wheel chair swings, modified swings that allow an adult to piggy back with their child, a sensory area with musical instruments, and even a giant board that lists simple phrases in braille, pictures in sign languages (yes, please, play, thank you, etc) that our kids can use to communicate with others on the playground.
But behind every clever idea is a lot of effort and creativity. Designers spend countless hours brainstorming, testing, and refining their ideas to make sure they work perfectly.
It’s not just about making things look good; it's about creating something that genuinely improves how we live.
This Car Park Has Been Converted Into A Solar Energy Farm Giving Shade And Cover Below
Why is not done more often instead putting it on agricultural land? I saw somewhere they covered sound barriers next to motorways with panels. Perfect location.
They can actually aid production on agricultural land. You can grow salad crops underneath using less water, or graze sheep.
Load More Replies...Two of my local supermarkets has this, as well as their flat roofs covered is solar panels, they make enough ower to cover most of their use, and in summer ones car won't be like an oven after shopping.
But... But... they'll use up all of the sun!! ::facepalms:: Yes, one of our elected officials said that.
Disneyland Paris had their complete parking lot shaded with solar panels. It is huge, but cannot meet their energy needs.
It doesn't have to meet all their energy needs. It still offsets a portion of them.

This Railing On Gazebo In Naples Has Braille Describing The View For Blind People. More Of This Please
There are now apps for the blind that use AI to describe images captured by the user's camera. So, a blind person could walk by a park and his/her phone can describe what is goin on in real time. The best use for AI yet.
The subways in Boston have (or long ago had) braille signs beneath the signs with the names of each subway station... even though they were located on the far side of the track from the platform. Nowadays, I'd think maybe somehow someone could scan them, but this was the 90s.... You'd have to cross the electrical tracks to read them.
Load More Replies...It says: "So there's, like, some water, and some buildings & junk. And there's a mountain to the left I guess, not that you can see it. Oh, hey, how do you know when your bum is clean afterwards?"
Load More Replies...This is a lovely gesture, although unfortunately many blind people never get the opportunity to learn braille. Braille books are extremely expensive, and there aren't many teachers available.
It could just be the camera perspective, but that looks much too large for someone to actually read.
I hope it's detailed and they've experienced things to understand the descriptions.

The Capitoline Museums In Rome Have Artworks Carved Out Onto Stone For Visually Impaired People To Feel So That They Can Also Enjoy Paintings
I found myself wishing they would put swatches of fabric by some of them, when I see beautiful velvet and silk in a painting, I wish I could feel it
A while ago I visited a museum in Berlin which did exactly this. Not only was the painting reproduced as a relief, they also used different materials so you could feel what was shown in the painting, e.g. using fabric in the feelable version where the painting showed the dress of a woman. Unfortunately there were only a few of those feelable representations.

Vein Finder We Use In The Hospital To Place IVs In Our “Hard Stick” Patients
On a less fun note. My daughter came back from visiting her dad in the Midlands (UK) and she said that the Morrisons (supermarket) toilet had blue lights. This is to make it harder for users to find veins!
Yeah, unfortunately that's not a new idea in the US. Many urban places with high rates of overdosing do the same thing in all public restrooms.
Load More Replies...Well, the hospital had a hard time finding my veins also. They bring out this machine and guess what? They still couldn't find a good one. It might work for some but not for all.
If these things are so great, why do I never see them in use? When I trained to be a phlebotomist, we were told about these. Then I worked in hospitals and clinics and none of them had one. I externed in a trauma center that had all the latest and greatest gadgets. But if we had a hard stick that seemed impossible, they just sent a different phlebotomist to try. I had a guy tap a vein in a patient's leg because her hands and arms were a no go. But no one was pulling out this gadget.
I had three phlebotomists try me in the emergency dept only twice and I begged them to keep going. Eventually another man came with a sonogram to find my veins but not before he tried to put one in my neck on both sides Why did I have to go through all that torture with this around?!
Load More Replies...I wish my doctor had this. They spend eternity trying to find the "right vein" and then always go for the hand. I may be almost 70 but I can and will scream like a 3 year old if anything is said about sticking a needle in my HAND! Find a vein in my arm or I'm either going to throw a tantrum or go home. Or both.
My mum worked in a hospital for 25 years and they needed these machines in her day oncology ward. Unfortunately, they didn’t have the funding for them because they’re $25,000 for one machine. One machine. Sorry, let me rephrase that: they claimed they didn’t have the funding for it and it was a private hospital.
I saw that in a local hospital here, I had to laugh since my hubby has stove pipes for veins and this guy needed that??

These Restaurant Kids Meal Crayons With Flat Edges To Prevent Rolling Off The Table
The triangular shape also has 2/5th the volume of a similar diameter circular shape, greatly reducing the manufacturing costs for what are essentially throwaway items.
And yet you only draw with the tip. OTOH, they break easier.... but not as much easier as you'd think. These have been around since the I was a kid, when we still had black and white TVs. Also, they help teach how to hold a pencil; Kids who struggled could even get these triangle-shaped rubber pieces to place over their pencils Another option was crayons with one side flat, but they were always awkward to hold.
Load More Replies...The triangular shape also aids in holding the crayon more easily, especially for those with undeveloped or limited fine motor function.
In adulthood, but some years ago, I had lead pencils that were triangular instead of round, and I thought they were much easier to hold. They would also take up less space in packaging & transport.
Damnit every time this gets posted I have to go to Pappadeaux again. I'm too broke for this.
Stretchers are a vital tool in emergency situations, but they do come with a few challenges. For one, they aren’t always the easiest to maneuver through tight spaces or rough terrain, which can slow down transport when time is critical.
Enter Yu-Hsin Wu, a student at Taiwan’s Shih Chien University who designed the inflatable stretcher. One of its best features is how portable it is compared to traditional stretchers. Since it's inflatable, you can easily deflate it, fold it up, and take it in remote or hard-to-reach areas.

Thankfully, Scotland Supports Young Girls And Women. Public Toilets Don’t Charge You For Toilet Paper And For Period Products
In the US, people would just take everything in the bin and stuff, their purse...
I've been stocking the high school where I am a custodian for 2 years now with free feminine products (as well as TP for ever) and so far the students have been very respectful about taking what they need and leaving the rest.
Load More Replies...This was offered to us at the university where I work. The catch was that since we have gendered bathrooms, the period products would have to be displayed in ALL bathrooms to accommodate transgendered people. Our university refused all of it. Heaven forbid that anyone should have to see a period product if they do not need it personally. FFS.
What a shame. I always thought one quality of a great husband/partner/brother/father is when they are willing to make an emergency run for tampons when you're in a pinch! I don't care how masculine you are, if you can't handle seek feminine hygiene products....then you have no business being around women
Load More Replies...Where in the world do you get charged for the paper you use to wipe your butt???
Probably no where, unless they have"pay to use" public toilets. But it's good food thought that bathroom functions and hygiene needs have long included provided toilet paper, paper towels, soap, hand sanitizer, and even cologne...but it used to cost if you were in public and got your period unexpectedly
Load More Replies...I see a lot of employers are providing free menstruation products too. There's many of these insert 25¢ machines in bathrooms that workplaces have taken out the coin part so the products dispenser for free. It's amazing how great an idea it is to do this. Funny how many times I got caught out without products when my period came on suddenly
Luckily, I usually get period pain in the couple of days before it starts, so most of the time I am prepared, but that certainly hasn’t always been the case, and sometimes it is heavier than expected, and I have not thought to bring pads/tampons with me
Load More Replies...Part of the title says "don't charge you for toilet paper." Are there places in the world that do charge for toilet paper when you use the restroom?
Title is wrong. A 'maxi-pad' is a sanitary napkin. This is not TP.
Load More Replies...It's becoming more common here in Ireland too, quite a few hospitality businesses have free menstrual products in the bathrooms.
I wonder if tampons are still taxed as “luxury items” in Australia. I was appalled when I found that out.
In Canada, our virtue-signalling PM made it mandatory for pads and tampons to be available in MEN’S washrooms in all government buildings, including Army bases. What are guys going to do with tampons, other than take them home for their wives/girlfriends?

No, we still work to provide food and services and community to people who lie or break the law or who are simply bad eggs. The empty pastry was thrown away.
My Local Pizza Place Uses A Ball Of Dough Instead Of Those Little Plastic Tables To Prevent The Pizza Box Lid From Touching The Pizza
But the table is the cat tax! Audi pounces the table and bats it around the kitchen, and I get to eat my pizza without his help.
Our favourite pizza place has done this for at least a decade. There is a fight over “the nose” every time. 😂
I am curious at when you need a table or dough for that ? No pizzeria here does that, they just close the lid and unless you turn the box upside down it works perfectly fine.
When you stack boxes, especially for deliveries, the weight, heat and moisture causes the unreinforced centers to sag which mashes and sticks to the pizza

Excellent idea. I'm sure there's loads of leftover food from school cafeterias that go to waste each day

Excellent, I've only seen them in the Netherlands. Good to see this great idea is being implemented in different places.

It's quite common in many European cities built on hillsides. Vigo, Toledo and Barcelona in Spain have them, Albufeira in Portugal, Spoleto in Italy... It's a cheap and effective way to provide mass transfer with minimal impact.
Here in Stuttgart, Germany we could need them, but I doubt they would ever get installed.

I remember doing one as a small child (in the US) where the whole chart was capital E's facing different ways, and they gave me a metal E to turn so it matched what I was looking at. Pretty clever way of testing a child who might be shaky on the alphabet and left/right.
Load More Replies...So the doctor also speak all these language to check if you do good?
Some people speak a language better that they read it. It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility they could identify the character in their language and speak it in another more comfortably. And there is a such thing as a key. Which would make it so the doctor could "read along", even just phonetically. Also....he might speak all those

Half A Pint At The Rugby Club Today
when that thing has condensation on the side, its gonna slip from my hands SO fast
My mum always used to ask for half a cup of coffee when her boss at her first job offered to get her one. When she left the job he gave her a ceramic mug like this that said half a cup of coffee on it. She still has it 40ish years later.
"What's that?" "That, my friend, is a pint." "It comes in pints? I'm getting one!" "Wait! You've had a whole half already!" Now we know what a whole half looks like.

German Buses Have Book Shelves
Just for your information: this is definitely not the norm. Never seen this and I only use public transport. But I would really like it. Another but: we have several book shelves on private property or public places where you can get books or stuff for free and it becomes more and more. At least from my home I could reach three tiny free shelves in five minutes, more in ten (by foot)
Little free libraries! There’s a bunch near where I live.
Load More Replies...I live in Germany as well and if the buses in my city had them those books would be flying- the bus drivers have no fear they just go even if someone else is in the way (I'm surprised there's not more bus related accidents but then again everyone else knows to be careful around them)
That was my 1st thought. And the 2nd thought was if a book interests me, what happens when I reach my stop and I'm halfway through the book?
Load More Replies...I would not want to be sitting in those two seats if the bus had to come to a hard sudden stop, despite the shelf lips.
I also love that the upholstery pattern looks like it already has graffiti, so it can't be tagged
Lockable Skateboard Parking
Good thing no Skateboard ever was designed to easily take the trucks off with a screwdriver.
And most padlocks can be opened by just banging on them. Security isn't about stopping smart and determined thieves, it's understanding that the reason they are thieves is probably because they're dumb and lazy, and putting up minimal barriers to slow them down enough that someone will notice they're trying to steal and tell them off. No security measure is impenetrable, but all you need is barely enough.

We have had them set up at many concert venues in Australia now, but unfortunately the 'security' guards have not been trained well about what they are for and have barred people at times. My 1000 Piece Puzzle Has A Cheat Code
Being 1000 pieces, I feel this is not so much a cheat sheet as a bit of help since you still have to work out those sections.
That, and do the letters line up exactly with the guide or is it flipped?
Load More Replies...As someone who is colorblind, this helps with some of the difficult colors like when you have a lot of sky that all looks exactly the same.

It probably basically is, but either people don't want to use a machine for clothes that has also had sneakers washed in it (I wouldn't care) or the drum is sturdier to deal with the extra weight/solidness of shoes.

Those cake are pretty awful. They used to have a TV show and a lot of hype, with long lines to buy the overpriced cakes. I had the chance to try some both from their Hoboken place and at their Vegas location, and my god they are horrendous. The Place I Work At Installed Fire Alarm-Like Boxes That Call The Police Or The Hospital Instead
The system calls the police or the hospital directly with the address so they can get there as quickly as possible without having to waste time telling someone what the address is, etc.
The police one also triggers an announcement over the loudspeaker with the "Run, hide, fight" strategy for active shooters. It also starts strobe lights outside the building so we know not to come in and simultaneously texts, calls, and emails everyone who is in the building, telling them that there’s an emergency. The text the leadership gets includes a link to view the live security cam footage. You can also respond to the text, and their system will look for keywords to give the police, too, like if a couple people respond with "red shirt" or something.

Load More Replies...My Neighbor's Heated Driveway Melted The Fresh Snow
Looked into those a while ago. These things are massively inefficient and waste a lot of energy for what can easily be accomplished by shoveling and some salt. For a 15x10 ft driveway you are spending on average 1.5$/hr, and it would require several hours of continuous operation to melt any amount of accumulated snow. When you turn it off, the surface is prone to ice buildup from melted snow. Also, the life of the driveway surface is reduced from heat stress and any kind of maintenance is extremely expensive.
Now you'll have a nice solid ramp of ice down at the street where the melt runs to.
Load More Replies...These would be really helpful for people who are not physically able to "easily accomplish" shoveling and salting an entire two car drive way. Also...with all the other environmental stuff going on in the world and your worried about heat pollution from a driveway...really?? Some of you guys are way too uptight around here. Maybe just say "hey that's neat" and move on. Sheesh 😐
A house in my sister's neighborhood had this. Their garage is in the rear of the house in the basement. The ramp beside their house going down is so steep that its hard to get up in dry weather. Ice would make it unusable. (You can shovel snow, but Ice doesn't leave until it decides to.)
And why is everyone's front lights on, not just energy usage but no evening peace outside.
