31 Infuriating Pics For People Who’ve Had About Enough Of Tipping Culture
Interview With Expert“Tipping culture has gone out of control.” How many times have we heard this about the service industry? Especially when talking about America. Customers get demands to tip when picking up takeout, at self-service checkouts, and even in the elevator.
Granted, it’s always been socially acceptable to tip your waiter, valet, or concierge. But with the current trend of ‘tipflation,’ tipping has been expanding into more and more industries. To demonstrate that, we’ve gathered the most absurd and infuriating cases where people had to tip. Do you have an outrageous tipping story, Pandas? And what’s your opinion on the matter: to tip or not to tip? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
Etiquette expert and author of A Traveler's Passport to Etiquette Lisa Mirza Grotts kindly agreed to lend Bored Panda her expertise. She told us more about the general guidelines for tipping in different service industries. We also had a chat about 'tipping fatigue' and in what instances it's okay not to tip. Read her insights below!

Tip Thieves Deserve Prison
This s**t makes me crazy. Business owners and managers steal CONSTANTLY and never EVER get punished. If the employees stole $375k from the till, they'd be doing 20 years each, but reverse the direction and it's a fine. They don't even make the owners write "I will not steal from workers" 200 times before they let them off the hook.
This Has To Stop. Now
Remember your waiter doesn't have a salary? I think that is a problem for you to fix, not me. Pay your damn staff.
I absolutely cannot understand that the government is allowing this "your waiter doesn't have a salary" b******t like it's supposed to be cute or something.
While I disagree with the current US tipping culture and think employees should be paid more, the wait staff in this post have an hourly wage ($2.13/hr + tips), not a fixed yearly salary. The sentence is just wordplay to make the customer feel guilty.
Most of the rest of the free world is way ahead of the U.S. ! They pay their people enough, and tipping is almost non existent.
Illegal in most countries. Obviously not in the USA. 'Land of the free' (free of salary?)
This is utterly reprehensible. I don't know what company or store this is, but they should be shut down & sued by any poor soul who thought for a minute it was a paying job. Only in the US!
Doordash Reminding Me That Tipping Culture Is Out Of Control
Cancel the order and go elsewhere, problem solved. Don't threaten your customers unless you want to lose your business.
If this is the only means of delivery, and you don't want to drive? It sucks that delivery is this way. I live out in the country so I don't get delivery from anywhere. I'm sure my view is skewed to "pay what they want to get it here", but if I lived in town, no freacking way would I put up with that.
Load More Replies...Tip for the quality of service you haven't received yet? By the same logic, can I delay paying for the food until I've eaten it and decided whether it was worth the money or not?
Good tip for a good service - how should i know, if there will be good servcie beforehand?!
A tip IN ADVANCE OF THE SERVICE is not a tip. That's not how tips work.
I never use door dash or grub hub and I can't understand why they'd ask you to tip ahead of time. Wouldn't most people possibly tip more if their food arrived quickly etc? Asking for a tip before services rendered is strange to me. I have been in the restaurant industry for 25+ years and my tips reflect the good service I provide.
Think about it as a determining factor used to accept a job. Do you want to know the pay of a job before you accept or decline a position? Same.thing, just labeled differently.
Load More Replies...THIS is why I refuse to use delivery apps. I tip AFTER service, not before, so all those restaurants that do NOT have their OWN delivery drivers guess what? You will NEVER get my business unless you are close enough and good enough for me to pick up.
Apparently DoorDash pays $2-10 per delivery; couriers pay their own fuel if driving; and about 1/3 of the time is spent waiting (i.e. unpaid) on average. Traffic conditions, weather etc are all factors in whether a specific job is "worth it". BUT because it is a gig setup and Deliverators are not employees, it's probably not far wrong to think of you - the customer - as the employer, and DoorDash as an agency. The amount you tip is the difference between whether you're a s****y employer who pays (below) minimum wage or one who pays better. Essentially it's *not* a tip, it's a bid for service. It's framed as a tip because it makes DoorDash sound less s****y and makes people blame the workers not the business model (and probably protects them from all sorts of legal issues!). DoorDash etc have a predatory business model though. If they didn't, your delivery would cost a lot more.
They're already being paid for their service, I'm damn well not paying for a tip ahead of time. I am NOT their employer. No skin off my nose, I'll order elsewhere.
Load More Replies...Why I stopped using food delivery services and started getting up and going out or fixing my own meals. Not only are their delivery services getting expensive, but it seems you're keeping the lion's share of the delivery charge and not giving it to your drivers.
Bored Panda reached out to the Golden Rules Gal, Lisa Mirza Grotts, for some guidelines about tipping culture. She's a 23-year certified etiquette expert who helps clients and readers deal with business, social, and political situations.
In addition to her television, radio, newspaper, and online presence, she authored a manners blog for the Huffington Post for eight years. We wanted to know more about the current estimates of tipping and what the tipping etiquette is for classic services such as taxis, restaurant servers, and hotel staff.
The etiquette expert says that the typical amount to tip servers at restaurants is 20% of the bill. When it comes to a concierge or a doorman at a hotel, it depends on the special request that they do for you. Whether that's calling a cab or carrying your luggage up to your room, the nature of the request determines the sum.
It Finally Happened. I Was Prompted To Tip At The Airport Self-Checkout Station
Always! I learned the hard way to seriously read every word on checkout screens. Tipping for doing nothing is NOT tipping. It's giving handouts.
Waffle House Charged The Tip The Same As The Total
I do not know about American law well enough for that, but if this was to happen in Switzerland, it certainly would be. The best advice for such a situation I could give would be to deny taking the order, deny the bill as well and issuing a complaint to Waffle House asap in form of a mail. Then, keep everything documented by your side, in best case even printed, and issue it forward when confronted with why you refused to take your order or pay.

Should happen anywhere EVER disgraceful!!! I tip lightly when ive received great service, but how dare American companies include it on the receipt. The Amoy of abuse that happens when someone can't afford 20% is shocking!!! The entitlement of some of the servers is beyond disgusting. If the can't live on their wage then do something about it. I've never been to the US and nor would I, but my daughter goes yearly and has been snapped at, even though she left a tip! This whole post is boiling my blood!!

I'm pretty sure this is illegal and you can easily dispute this to your bank or CC company
"Nice House For A $5 Tip, F*** You"
Good riddance. You should never expect or demand tips.
I work at a curbside dispo and never expect tips but I'm always grateful whether it's $1 or $20.
Load More Replies...The value of the order has no bearing on the what you did to deliver the order. If she ordered $50 of pizza, you would have done the exact same thing. Should you have a $12.50 tip?
CA had the opportunity to force DoorDash, et al, to pay their contractors full, minimum wage - with all adjacent rights, no matter what (tho they *are* being paid more than the 2.18$/hour mandatory server wage). DD, et al, refused to adhere to the CA *legislation*, CA did nothing to enforce it, and DD et al lined the legislature's pockets well enough to basically reverse the legislation, and put to a public vote whether or not DD, et al, should be forced to pay proper minimum wage. Special vote, that caught most off-guard, and guess who won that....
Five dollars for a twenty dollar order is actually a good tip. Obviously the kid didn't understand tips are percentage based. What'd he want? A 100% tip?
what a f****n twat. Go get a real job if you rely solely on tips you loser.
$5 of a $20 pizza is a 25% tip. What? You expected a wheelbarrow of gold bars??
Grotts actually has gratuity guidelines on her website. She updated them after COVID-19 happened. "The 'tipping point' happened in 2020," the etiquette expert writes. "In normal times, gratuity depends on the quality and frequency of service." She agrees that many people may feel 'tipping fatigue,' but, as she tells Bored Panda, "the general rule is that when a service has been performed, a gratuity is in order."
"As servers are paid a low base pay, a little extra can make a big difference in the time of Covid. The amount all depends on the type of service, but one thing experts all agree on is when in doubt, give, and make sure to have cash on you." Are there times when not tipping is okay? "Tipping is not allowed at private lunch clubs and country clubs. Also, a tip would not be expected at self-service checkout or for medical appointments, to name a few," Grotts gives some examples.
Tipping Scale
90%? Ridiculous, is the employer even paying their employees anymore if that's what's necessary to keep them afloat? This also seems to be one of those machines that want to be tipped despite there being no employee present at all.
I would be surprised if employees here got to keep the entire tip.
Load More Replies...Those should not be the suggested tips for only $15. Where's the 15% or 18% suggestions?
jeez-us. That is exactly how you LOOSE customers. PEOPLE. Do your damn job. Pay your employees a living wage. If they do something above-and-beyond I might consider offering something above-and-beyond to price of the service, and ONLY to that person.
Tipping is becoming so tedious these days. I only tip, if the service staff has done a good job.
Now I Need To Tell My 5 Yr Old We’re Not Having Pizza
yeah, these are not sustainable business models. They're too low paying for the drivers, and WAY too expensive for customers. The company certainly won't take less profit, so I don't see these lasting very long. Contractors are always looking for a more profitable hustle, and they'll definitely come along.
Load More Replies...Here's the thing: People order from delivery services in lieu of simply picking up the order themselves. Do I think the prices are outrageous? Yes. That's why I either cook or go pick up the order myself. If I want food but don't want to drive to go get it, I should expect to have to pay whatever the deliverer wants for the convenience. Having food delivered is a service, not a favor. I think the service is a ripoff, so I exercise my right not to use it. If enough people do that, the price will come down. That being said, I believe that was the point the OP was making as well.
Also the service fee. Triple charged for the same thing...

Elevator Asks For Tip
Omg I could just stick a QR code in random places and some people would just send me money?
And you could word it so the only "illegal" part would be vandalism cause if the sticker itself
Load More Replies...I’m assuming this one is to tip the housekeeping staff for cleaning your room if you don’t have small bills to leave
That’s my guess - as a convenience since everything is digital these days and not many carry cash. I don’t think it’s a random solicitation for tips.
Load More Replies...Well I'm not staying at a Best Western anytime soon. It's not like elevators have attendants (conductors?) in uniforms anymore.
Good thing I'm the only person left (apart from my mom) who doesn't have a cell phone at all. This is truly ridiculous.
I want to make these and put them up various places. Might be a good way to supplement my income. Yay, Capitalism!
The pandemic is a big reason why gratuity amounts have increased. Shubhranshu Singh, a professor at Johns Hopkins Business School, told NPR that we started tipping more to support essential workers. After the pandemic ended, expected sums didn't go down.
Another reason for 'tipflation' is that now it's much easier to ask for tips. All service industry workers have to do is turn a tablet around. "That person who gave service to you is in front of you and there is this social pressure," Singh adds.
Now I'm Suggested To Tip The Kitchen As Well?
I'd be scared to eat out/Take away/shop, etc, in the USA (Not to mention the healthcare. National Insurance in the UK is a blessing). There needs to be a national Minimum wage. Apart from the tipping culture, the UK will (very) soon be in the same crazy sh&t unless we get a better Govt. Updated to add: we do tip (VERY optional) if we are delighted with the service/food, but it isn't expected, as their wages have to be at or above the Minimum Wage.
There is a "national minimum wage." Unfortunately, service industry corporations skirt that by claiming that the employees are tipped (even if it's less that a quarter a month) and therefore, the employer doesn't have to pay them an amount that puts them over minimum wage.
Load More Replies...Nope. They get good wages in the UK. We have strong (and many) Unions, thankfully.
Load More Replies...The kitchen DOES get tipped. In most restaurants the server is required to tip out the hosts, bussers, kitchen, etc out of the servers tips. The server also has to claim the original amount of the tip as income for tax purposes but the other staff rarely/never do since there's no record of how much the server tipped them.
We don't do that here, (UK) as I explained to ZGutr.
Load More Replies...If it was only that, without the tip above, and I've had a great meal, I'd buy them a round. This way, aint nobody gettin nothin.
Delivery Driver Thinks It’s Ok To Make Their Food Cold Because They Didn’t Tip Them
Tips should be for exceptional service. You do not get tips for doing what is expected of you.
And you can't get tipped for exceptional service before you've rendered it, which is the problem here.
Load More Replies...Maybe they wanted to give you a cash tip if they didn't leave it in the app?
I prefer to tip in cash so doordash doesn't take part of it.
They might have had a cash tip upon delivery but I bet this jackhole didn’t even think of that.
This, because that is what I would have done BECAUSE I was in food service.
Load More Replies...Sometimes the crippling anxiety I have when I think about a complete stranger delivering food to me that isn't in a completely tamper proof locked and heated steel vault isn't as irrational as it sound.
It isn't, I stopped having restaurant food delivered during the pandemic when I found that my DoorDash driver had eaten most of 3 bags of tortilla chips . Her hand in our food.
Load More Replies...Tips were given AFTER the delivery. You dunce buckets. That's a good way to either get your butt kicked (depending on the person) or fired. (Depending on the manager)
Pizza Hut charged me 6.50$ to deliver 30$ of food to me the other day (directly thru PH). The Pizza had at least 50% less toppings than this one, and the Cinnabon minis hadn't even risen, NOR were baked correctly - so to make sure they didn't kill me, I didn't eat them. Got *REMINDERS* to leave a tip for your driver (who didn't bother to ring my doorbell before running off)....after ALLLLLL that. Nah, I'm good. PH never again, and blocked them on my phone.
My Airbnb Host Wanted Me To Tip Housekeeping…on Top Of The $200 Cleaning Fee
Technically, the cleaner worked for the host, so HE should tip the cleaner, right?
Well, a waitress works for the restaurant owner, but he isn't the tipper. Customers tip, not employers. Both restaurant and Airbnb workers should receive adequate salaries, not tips. And this just isn't a tipping situation anyway. (And I have my doubts that the cleaner would see a penny of any tip left.)
Load More Replies...My friends and I used to use Airbnb years ago, but now with hosts like this asking for tips, charging insane cleaning fees on top of all the other random fees, AND demanding guests clean up after themselves as well....we have switched back to hotels for our adventures.

As a former housekeeper (side hustle), when I worked with a woman who held the LLC, she would pay me an hourly wage, separate from what she charged the client. So fir that $200, I would get maybe 20%. It's wholly unfair considering you are the one that travels and does the work. I didn't last long.
I would have left my dirty wet wipes in that envelope. There's your tip
Vacasa is a very large vacation rental company in the U.S. I know what they start their housekeepers out at. (At least in my area) There is no reason to tip. I also know firsthand what their cleaning is like. (Not great). P.S. I worked for Vacasa once upon a time.
Michael Lynn, a marketing professor at Cornell and expert in tipping research, has found that the bigger the suggested sum, the more people tip. The researchers did an experiment with an Internet app-based laundry service. The app recommended different gratuity amounts at random. The bigger the tip the company asked for, the bigger the tip the customers paid.

Staff at the Grand Legacy Hotel at Disneyland is probably doing just fine with or without tips.
However, in the cases where there's no social contact, customers don't feel that social pressure. Because they have to tip after the ride, people feel less inclined to tip their drivers. In fact, research shows that 60% of people never tip when using rideshare apps, and only 1% always tip.
Americans Are So F**king Weird
Wtf? ETA: am I tipping myself for my own time and gas money?
Pay for your purchase and leave. Tipping is extra, the staff gets paid either way.
No. Takeout duties must be done by fully paid staff. Pay your staff.
40% Suggested Tip. Absolutely Not
We had a waitress yesterday who earned and got a 30% tip. Over the years I have seen instances of a 40% tip being justifiable.
I remember in school I was taught to tip 7%, oh the early 2010s were amazing.
Tipping Is Getting Out Of Hand
50 dollars (+ tips) for a plastic coffee tamper with some gimmick useless mechanism? It's even more insulting than the tip request...
All the other stuff is BS, but the mechanism isn't useless. It keeps you from tamping the grounds down too firmly. Ours pops at 30lbs.
Load More Replies...Naturally, 'tipflation' is also related to inflation. Sean Jung, assistant professor of hospitality analytics at Boston University, also told NPR that businesses are trying to lure in workers with benefits and higher pay. In fact, they're apparently fighting tooth and nail for them. But they also want to keep the prices of goods and services the same because lots of customers get spooked at any sign of inflation.
Just Booked A Hotel Room Online... Tip?

We're Supposed To Tip Subway Workers Now? For What?
If true, it's very illegal in the USA. The Fair Labor Standards Act Under explicitly prevents the employers and managers from benefiting from tips left for service, even by simply being included in the tip pool. BUT, often this kind of notices are a cheap trick to push for cash use to evade taxation.
If you don't like how the company works, (not saying right or wrong) find another job!

Double Service Fee?
Why is there a charge for employees benefits contribution? And what is that? We just don’t have this nonsense in the uk.
A new one on me too. Business owners can ask for any odd thing they want. I was wondering if there is an expectation of a tip as well.
Load More Replies...Employee benefits contribution line is the craziest sh!t I've seen in a while! So we, the customers, are supposed to pay for the employee's benefits, not the employer?! Apart from the service fee which is insane, and the expected tip?!?!?!?!
And they should tax it BEFORE the service fee ant tip or whatever, this looks like it was done after, which is wrong.
Load More Replies...Is almost $100 extra in fees and tax. No wonder people don’t go out anymore.
I would demand they take it off and if they refuse I will dispute the charge and they will deservedly get NOTHING.
The result is then that customers cover a portion of workers' wages with what they tip. "The wage workers are receiving isn't sufficient," Jung told NPR. "So now everybody is using this very weird way to increase wages while maintaining the same menu price." It's no wonder many people have been complaining that it’s a strange way for businesses to pay workers more without increasing their salaries in order to keep prices low.

Restaurant In Baltimore Adds 18% Tip Automatically
Automatic gratuity is appropriate in a tipping country. It stops bad customers stiffing the servers. Just as long as it goes to the server, not the house.
But the argument for tipping is that it gives control to customers and staff (the former to show appreciation or withhold for substandard service, the latter by letting them "earn" better pay through superior service). Take that away and you've got no reason for a tipping-based economy at all.
Load More Replies...They miss the point of tips. It's a gratuity for good service. If it's automatic, there is no reason the server could care if you choked to death or not.
Airbnb Owner Expects Us To Tip His Cleaning Service He Hired On Top Of The $250 Cleaning Fee
I would just print my receipt, highlight the $250 cleaning fee, then put it in the envelope with a note that says, "you're welcome!"
Or, "don't spend it all in one place". That's a pretty good tip if you ask me.
Load More Replies...Jung says that the only two ways out of this situation are adding fees to what we buy or simply raising prices. "You see this whenever inflation is on the rise. If it's compulsory, it's no longer a tip and therefore turns into illegal extortion.
If it's compulsory, then it's not a 'tip', it's deception. What the supplier is doing is advertising their price as $X.00, but the actual price is $X.00 + $5.00.
I make it a personal point to never pay a compulsory tip on an app. I do not trust the employer to give the tip to the valets. I prefer to thank them and give a decent tip (at a minimum $5-10) when I hand over the keys.
Load More Replies...A tip is legally defined as optional to the payer. A mandatory tip is actually a service fee and needs to be labeled as such to prevent the company from being open to litigation
Load More Replies...There's no universal rule for how much you're obligated to tip in every situation. But there are some general guidelines. Some finance experts recommend looking at how much the service providers earn. Restaurant servers and cashiers, for example, have different salaries. Historically, that's been the reason why we tip waiters, cab drivers, and salon workers.
I Could Not Imagine Giving A Tip This Big
Eh? Then charge enough for its use to cover your expenses and make a profit??
They do, already, most likely!!! They just want more, and cover it by calling it "tip".

And for the case that this is a public cruise with many people on, this guy can go and stick the paddle in his behind. As if a normal person could even just easily afford such a high tip.
Why would you get tipped for just doing your job? These are not people getting tip wages (which are below minimum wage). These are normal workers.
Despite some charter brokerage agencies trying hard to push this, it is absolutely NOT the norm. Typical, it's a 5%-10% tip (calculated on the charter price, without operating expenses and fuel) handed to the captain, who then distributes it to the crew according to seniority, responsibilities and performance.
Then what am I paying you for. Figure it out. Don't bait and switch. don't advertise one rate then it's actually twice that much. F**k you!
When Did 20% Become Customary?
When inflation hit people started asking for more because "inflation"...thing is that tips are usually a percentage - they auto-adjust for inflation so this whole 20%+ thing is just greed and nothing more.
it is 'customary' for me to never do business here again. After all, it is DISCRETIONARY.
The number of restaurants here adding a mandatory 20% gratuity is insane. The min wage for tipped employees is $18.56 per hour, and the service is usually awful. Some of my favorite places started this and I stopped going.
Where are tipped employees making $18.56/hr?

Hail Ceasar! (I don't know if the wages are fair but if they are I think tipping is not necessary)
They receive paychecks and not tip wages or work for tips. So they have no system to accept tips that must be counted as income and taxed differently. Restaurants that pay their employees usually have no method of accepting tips for good reason.
Experts say that when there's an automated kiosk or you're ordering something to-go, a tip is not a must. "In this case, 20% is not the new minimum," Dr. Jaime Peters, assistant dean and assistant professor of finance at Maryville University, told CNBC. Except maybe when the service is extremely fast and excellent.

I can't speak for the rest of the world but they can in England add a gratuity to the bill, but it has to be stated on the bill and I think you can ask them to remove it. I went out for a meal with work, we tipped 20% when we got the bill only to look at it outside and find we'd already been charged 18% gratuity so we'd tipped twice.

Servers get paid $2.13 an hour (€1.97) in some states because tipping is culturally normal and makes up the rest of their wage. You cannot, ethically, eat out at a place with servers paid this way and not tip them.

The gratuity was included at the end on the bill (I assumed for the waitress) but then a second screen comes up asking you to tip the waitress again. I was so confused because is that not what the gratuity is…
Isn't a "service charge" the main point of the price in the first place?
I went into a small coffee shop, where I was handed an empty cup that I filled with coffee from a carafe, then I added cream and sweetener myself, and when cashing out, it was suggested that I add a 20% or more tip.
I hope you left nothing. I for one would even have added "I did the work, so I'm tipping myself only" if I could.

I have reached the point of never going anywhere there's tipping. The stress of figuring out what's fair to the server and doing the math at the end of the meal is a mood spoiler for me. I would be happy to go to a more expensive restaurant, where I know the people are paid a living wage.
If people don't stand up and leave after being informed of the automatic gratuity they have it coming. Those places deserve to go out of business.
That information is most often not prominently displayed. Some people don't carry a magnifying glass to read the fine print.

People order out because they likely don't have the time or energy to get all the necessary groceries, put it all away, cook it then do the dishes. If you're working 12 plus hours a day, need sleep, factor in drive time, prep time, it all adds up quickly.
