“Just Give Me My Son”: Father Begs School To Let Him See His Child, But They Refuse
InterviewA father was kept apart from his 11-year-old son for hours after his school suggested the boy had “had dr*gs in his system,” when in fact he only had a cold.
The worried parent, surnamed Barksdale, documented the situation on social media, including a conversation with an officer who told him he couldn’t see his boy until he underwent a medical exam.
- A father was separated from his son at school after authorities suggested the boy had taken illegal substances.
- The school locked the father out and made the boy take a medical test, only to find he just had a cold.
- The 11-year-old's dad is planning to take legal action against the school authorities.
Initially, when the school called him, the father rushed to the building, believing the institution had given something to his child.
The 11-year-old had been dealing with allergies and feeling unwell in the weeks before the incident, which led him to miss a week and a half of school. The boy had also been grieving the recent passing of many family members, his dad said.

After arriving at the school, Barksdale learned that authorities suspected the boy appeared ill because he had been “intoxicated.”
When he called the child’s mother to let her in on the exasperating situation, the principal, Lisa Frey, locked Barksdale out.
“She locked me out of the building and wouldn’t tell me anything about what was going on with my son,” the concerned father explained.

According to the content creator, the principal “got hurt feelings” and wanted to “prove she had control.” She also called him “irate,” though Barksdale says he doesn’t know why.
In one of the videos documenting the incident, Barksdale recalled that Frey was “aggressive and disrespectful” when he came to enroll his son.
“I don’t know if it’s because I’m a Black man raising my children or because I’m a man. I’m not sure what it is. But she has been aggressive, disrespectful, and completely careless,” he said. “Someone like that does not deserve to work around children.”

The school’s secretary then let him in, though he still wasn’t allowed to see his child or know where he was.
Later, his son told him he was in the “health ward.” A medic came and made the 11-year-old undergo a test despite not receiving the father’s consent.

The institution also called the police, and a resource officer for the school came down to speak with Barksdale.
Authorities then filed an “emergency petition” to test his son at the hospital.
The hospital found nothing in his system but rhinovirus (i.e., the common cold).
The principal locked the father out of school when he phoned the boy’s mother to let her in on the situation
@theprototype88This woman at the white oak school has been consistently rude, nasty and disrespectful since before my son started school here. Idk if it’s because im black or because im a man but this is ridiculous♬ original sound – King B
The dad later learned that his son had been taken to a “health ward” to undergo a medical test without his consent
@theprototype88The principal wouldnt come out but this cop could care less about what im saying he just wants to do what they tell him. They are literally holding my son hostage♬ original sound – King B
The content creator said he found Frey’s attitude surprising, considering that White Oak, the public institution located in Parkville, Maryland, is a school specifically for students with behavioral and emotional challenges.
Following the alarming scene, Barksdale decided to take his son out of White Oak School.

@theprototype88He has rhinovirus everybody thats it! No substances in his system♬ original sound – King B
The content creator suspects the attack was racially motivated
@theprototype88And for everybody thats assuming shit to try to excuse the school, your impediments are showing.♬ original sound – King B
The father is planning on taking legal action against the institution and shared that he was contacted by a civil rights lawyer from California who’s helping him find a local lawyer.
He decided to take his child out of White Oak School following the incident
@theprototype88Man i dont remember this lady’s name but she helped calm me, she validated my feelings, she touched my shoulder to share some of her beautiful energy with me. I will never forget this lady because of how kind she was as much as ill never forget the principal for how malevolent she was. I hope i can see her again to thank her in person.♬ original sound – King B

Barksdale also said that he’s not the only one who believes the school’s disrespectful treatment was racially motivated. As he explained, his son was the first to suspect that the school’s authorities were racist.
The child said the school insinuated his dad might take illegal substances because he “looks like this.”
Bored Panda has contacted White Oak’s principal and vice-principal for comment.
The school district’s Communications Department declined to comment on the incident “due to privacy concerns.”

The obvious question that hasn't been asked and is being avoided: would this have happened if the family were white?
Something similar happened to my child in elementary school. The principal wanted to suspend him for laughing while he was 'benched' during recess. Not talking, not getting up or fidgeting, just laughing at something one of the other benched kids had said. Side note all of the benched kids were Latino or black. Principal called me away from work to come sign the papers. My child was a mess, sobbing. I get there and she proceeds to tell me this is how these type of kids ends up in prison (he's Latino I'm white). I just started at her. Then she signs me the papers to sign. I said politely, do you think the punishment really fits the crime? Laughing at recess on a bench deserves to be suspended? I was furious but held it together. She finally cancelled the suspension, but I found it later she did an in school suspension. Racism is alive and well in America.
Load More Replies...This is so horrible. I hope this family is okay and that this school receives the punishment they deserve. How the hell do you mistake a sick kid for being on d.rugs? My heart goes out to this family and I hope they receive all the support they need to press charges on the school and recover from a horrible experience 🩷🩷🩷
They didn't "mistake" anything. They ASSUMED that all black people are involved with dr*gs on some level, no matter their sex or age. So if a black child seem to be out of it, it HAS to be dr*gs, in their minds. And that, to them, justified breaking multiple laws, because they were so SURE their assumption was right that there was no way this would blow up in their face.
Load More Replies...I hope he sues the school, the officer, and the principal. Especially the principal. He needs to take her to court and sue her personally and separately from the school itself. She sounds like she's on the worst power trip ever. Besides, what type of teacher, who works with kids all day, doesn't have the slightest clue when a kid is sick? And to not listen to the parent? Good grief.
For crying out loud. The kid is 11 and they refused to allow a parent to be with him? Totally wrong. As was taking him to the hospital with no adult family member along. I'm sure the poor kid was totally freaked out, as well as being sick. I'm pretty sure racism was a part of all this. A White kid would have had mom and dad right there in the office, and the kid could have been high as a kite and it wouldn't matter one bit, as long as he and his folks were White. An ill Black child is harassed, embarrassed, poked and prodded, and we all know it had nothing to do with any perception that he might be acting a little off (maybe lack of sleep because of the cold?). Did they take blood to test for his supposed d**g use, or breathalyzer, or what. I hope to read about the suit when it happens and I hope the school has to pay for their cruelty. Dad, you did good, so sorry the world sucks like this.
If this man was white, had no dreads, and was wearing a suit & a tie, no way in hell would this happen! It was ABSOLUTELY racially motivated! Disgusting.
They tryed this at a school i was at, They locked me in the room with the princeable, and refused to unlock it to my screaming mom, the reason? I was scared of being locked in a small room that they had for students who didn't do work, When was younger,i lost my eye to r*pe {im male and japanese and this happened when i was 8, just after they placed me in a home cause someone killed my mother cause they were convinced i was a "demon" cause i was albino, The mom in this story is my aunt {and while it done mean anything to the story other then clearly showing I'm adopted, she is white, but i pass for it other then white hair, that adopted me at age 11 and this story takes place when i was 12...} ///////////////////// I need up haveing to push and princeable back, and shove a teacher out of the way, drag the table they thought wold keep me in the room, from in front of the door, then unlock it, then i ran out to my mom crying.... I was at this time aboue 6'4 so it was hard to keep me in
Me too! I was threatened with police and court when our son was in hospital for glandular fever! Thankfully our paediatrician backed us, and the head of the school was encouraged to 'resign'. I still removed our son and home educated him, but wad thankful for the validation of the medical team and the LEA.

I am Caucasian and I would definitely say this was racially motivated. Unbelievable. I hope you find a great attorney. No child should be put thru this and neither should a parent. I agree with another commenter about calling ambulance to pick up your son to go to a hospital. They can't do any medical test on a child whatsoever without parental approval!!!!
Can you imagine how much worse the damage the school/principal could have caused if the child had been having an actual health emergency like a stroke or a seizure? If he was acting "strange", their first thought should have been maybe a head injury or ask the child what was wrong. Idk if I could have reacted as well as the dad. I hope he gets an attorney so the school can't keep doing this.
unbelievable... we ask men to "step up" and be a parent, then punish them when they do! i hope the kid was not frightened to be without his father during this.
This is one of the dumbest things I've ever read! You are so out of line here.
