Woman Thinks She’s Right To Complain About Plane Passenger, Gets Dragged Instead

17

Traveling by plane can be equal parts exciting and exhausting. If you’re en route to the destination you’ve been dreaming about for the past 6 months, you might be thrilled to board. But feeling cramped in a tiny plane seat for 12 hours can leave you cranky, dehydrated and jetlagged for days to come.

To make everyone’s journey more pleasant, it’s best to follow proper airplane etiquette. The only problem is, people can’t seem to agree on what exactly that means. One woman recently posted a TikTok calling out the passenger in front of her for reclining his seat, but the internet quickly came to his defense. Below, you’ll find all of the details, as well as some of the comments viewers left.

Most travelers agree that there’s nothing wrong with reclining your seat during a long-haul flight

There are strict rules when it comes to how to behave at the airport. You must be respectful of the security protocols, keep your carry-on luggage with you at all times and arrive at your gate early enough to board without delaying your flight. Once passengers are on the plane, however, it often feels like they’ve entered the Wild West.

Some people begin watching films and TV shows without earbuds, and others start removing their shoes and socks as soon as they find their seat. Passengers might throw a fit about not having the window seat they wanted, and others might whip out potent tuna fish sandwiches.

And, of course, some travelers will recline their seats as soon as the plane is in the air. Clearly, the internet is divided on whether or not this is appropriate. So let’s see what the experts have to say. Etiquette expert Jo Hayes told Travel + Leisure that it’s perfectly fine to utilize this feature. After all, “The aircraft wouldn’t have the option to recline if it wasn’t acceptable.”

But Lisa Mirza Grotts, author of A Traveler’s Passport to Etiquette, notes that “deciding when to recline your seat on a plane involves self-awareness, social awareness, and situational awareness.” For example, you probably don’t want to lean back during mealtimes, as it might lead to the lunch of the person behind you ending up on their lap.

Despite the fact that many people view reclining their seat as an in-flight right, some are still offended by the passenger in front of them encroaching into their space. In fact, some situations even escalate to the point of arguments or physical fights breaking out during a flight.

So to keep things civil while flying, Jordan Waller at The Points Guy recommends keeping your seat up during certain situations. Along with meal times, Waller notes that it’s best not to recline if the person behind you is working on a laptop or if the flight is only 3 hours or less. He also recommends waiting to recline until “lights out” time on long-haul flights.

But it’s still wise to be considerate of those around you

Passenger stretching legs in airplane seat with Delta safety card visible, illustrating plane passenger complaint scenario.

Image credits: satellite779 (not the actual photo)

And if you really want to be considerate, you can always give the person behind you a heads up before reclining your seat. There is a risk, however, that they will protest. So proceed with caution.

Now, if you happen to be the person who becomes instantly infuriated when a passenger in front of you decides to recline their seat, you’re not alone. In fact, a survey from YouGov found that 26% of Americans find reclining seats on a plane to be unacceptable. However, that doesn’t mean that erupting into an argument or physical altercation is appropriate either.

If you really want to make sure that your flight experience isn’t ruined by the passenger in front of you, there’s always an option to pay extra for a bulkhead seat. These are the seats directly behind the wall that separates one cabin from another, meaning that there won’t be any passengers seated directly in front of them.

These seats provide travelers with extra legroom, easier aisle access and often, they’re the closest seats to the lavatories. However, there are some cons of having a bulkhead seat.

Passengers in these seats don’t have access to under-seat storage, seatback tray tables or seatback entertainment systems. It can also be annoying to sit in a busy area where passengers are constantly coming and going from the bathroom.

There’s no perfect plane seat. So when traveling, it’s usually best to focus on the positives and try to get to your destination without any drama. We would love to hear your thoughts on this video in the comments below, pandas. Then, you can find another Bored Panda article featuring plane seat drama right here!

Reclining is only a problem because there's so little room between seats, but that's on the airline. The solution is to recline in cascade, but if you're the one at the rear end you're doomed and should be compensated somehow.

Not even able to eat the pizza slice I ordered as I couldn't get my hand to my mouth, had to lean sideways to do it.

I wish they would just do away with recliners but respect that as long as they have them people are entitled to use them. I used to travel lots for work and at 6'2" lost count of the number of times I was reclined on by some due of about 5'6"!! Did my nut in.

No one wants to sit at a 90 degree angle. If anything they should always be reclined. They only go back like 3 degrees too. So it’s not like someone is in your lap.

We need to stop fighting each other on this one and start fighting the airlines who are taking away our leg room so they can cram more people in their planes. The spaces have reduced dramatically over the years. You should see the split level seats that are being designed. People on the bottom row would have arses in their faces.

Don't blame the airline either, it's ultimately you, the customer, who wants to pay budget prices. People are quick to forget just how much cheaper flying is now than at any point in the past. One source (below) shows a representative 55% drop in prices from 1978 to 2015, then even more, a 77% drop from 2015 to 2024. If you're happy to pay the old fares, different airlines with better seating options including business or first class are still available. . . . . https://simpleflying.com/50-years-airfares/

Yes. These are the people who sit at the back of a mile long lane instead of using the free lane next to it to drive on up and merge at the head of the line. They’re bitter bc they don’t use their own rights and privileges. And then they expect no one else to use them either. Sorry folks- reclining is legal and intended. Using both lanes is legal and intended. Sorry you don’t take advantage.

I worked as an airline mechanic and I can inform you that you should be mad at the airline. I have worked on putting seats back in the plane after repairs. There were times that the spacing was changed to add another row of seats. I would not fly coach on long haul flights for this reason. It is there so they can book more seats. Not the passengers fault. And yes, I have done it, fly coach on long hauls. I didn't book the flight, not my choice. 12hour flight from the US to New Zealand.

I can still remember when flying was fun! Seats were comfortable, flights were often half full so there was even more room, we could even bring our own booze on board, and we could move around a lot more if we wanted. Then two things happened. Airlines started doing everything in their power to nickel and dime us to death and squeeze us into sardine cans instead of seats and, of course, 911. Boing seriously lost their way. I blame airlines for it all.

When you purchase a seat, you purchase the space under the seat in front of you and the space the seat reclines in. For my back, I need that two inches of recline. It doesn't seem like much but makes a world of difference.

I once was stuck in a bulkhead seat so could not recline and the woman in front reclined her seat as far as it could go, trapping me as if I were in a coffin. She stayed like that the entire flight. I couldn't use my tray, watch a movie, or eat what I had ordered without sticking my head sideways out from under her chair. It was horrible. I think people should have some consideration when they recline. Just because the chair will do it, is not sufficient reason to be cruel to others.

They need to remove the recline option. We get little enough space without the idiot in front taking 4" of it. Now I can't use the tray table and I can't see the TV screen. All I can see is a bald spot forming.

Easyjet, a British/European budget airline, removed reclining seats many years ago. This made them cheaper, less bulky and slightly less uncomfortable than the previous upright position. I think their max flights are around 5 hours. There are a couple of rows that you can book for more leg space, so I'd generally book the emergency exit rows for longer flights.

If folks recline all the way they shouldn’t ever complain if the seat gets bumped or pulled on. On most flights, if the seats are reclined, it’s impossible to get up w/o smashing the seat.

Recline away! There's no reason to be at risk for blood clots on a plane because the person behind you wants to be weird about the seat.

This is a capitalism problem, not a seat reclining problem.

I dont get the beef with people reclining their seat. They only recline a few inches . its not like you are in some ones lap . I have even been on long haul flights and it has never never been an issue for me or other around me

When you purchase a seat, you purchase the space under the seat in front of you and the space the seat reclines in. For my back, I need that two inches of recline. It doesn't seem like much but makes a world of difference.

That dude that wouldn't let the kid recline would be served right with bruised knees. Stumble around Mallorca for a long weekend on that, dickbag.

The solution is for the tall man is to book a seat he can be comfortable in. Some are better than others.

Nope. All else apart the reclining seat is for back comfort, it doesn't do anything about leg space,

That's a lot of people that only care about themselves. I never recline without checking who is behind me AND asking if they mind. Guess some people raised better than others.

I have no idea why asking means you were raised better. How many other things in society do you ask for permission to do? They are using the seat as it was designed. Now one forced airlines to pack people in like sardines. Blame the airlines not the recliner.
