Adding fuel to the fire, a third (32%) of employees report they’re also contacted after hours by managers.

The inability to disconnect makes workers feel the need to remain responsive during their personal time. As a result, 58% of them now feel anxious when opening their inboxes, turning a tool of convenience into a daily source of tension.

Plus, 90% of employees say they get a sense of dread on Sundays because of the coming workweek.

However, there’s only so much people can do for themselves. Employers should do their part too, and not just out of altruism.

According to a 2025 study in The American Journal of Preventive Medicine, burnout costs U.S. companies between $4,000 and $21,000 per employee each year — or up to $5 million annually for an average U.S. company with 1,000 employees.
