Many kids find the idea of being an adult glamorous. Grown-ups get to stay up as late as they want, eat ice cream for dinner, watch R-rated movies, and if they don’t want to make their bed, they don’t have to!
But reality can hit you like a ton of bricks when you turn 18 and find out that being an adult is actually a lot of hard work. And you do have to get plenty of sleep and eat healthy, unless you want to feel terrible the next day. The good news, however, is that we’re all in it together. Bored Panda has compiled a list below of hilarious memes about the realities of adulting, so enjoy scrolling through and be sure to upvote the ones that you find painfully relatable!

For most people, growing up isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. Yes, there’s a level of freedom that comes along with it. But there are also limitations that many of us are bound by. You can’t really do whatever you want unless you have an unlimited stream of income. So most of us are tied down to jobs that we don’t care about just so we can keep food on the table and a roof over our heads.
Psychologist Shaurya Gahlawat also says that there’s a certain grief that accompanies growing up. She explains that losing childhood friendships, navigating adult relationships, and dealing with the stress of a full-time job can come with an immense emotional weight that none of us are prepared for. Eventually, we realize that “grown-ups” don’t have all the answers, and we’re all just doing our best.
One of the most challenging aspects of adulthood is having to work seemingly all the time. On average, people spend 90,000 hours, or one-third of their lifetime, at work. That’s a pretty depressing statistic. Especially because, growing up, most of us were sold the myth of having a healthy work-life balance. In reality, however, 77% of employees report experiencing burnout from working too much.
Meanwhile, becoming an adult means being bombarded with decisions to make. What do you want to do for work? Where do you want to live? What should you make for dinner? When can you see your friends? There’s nobody else around to make decisions for you and simply tell you what to do. And it can be exhausting when you’re faced with dozens of decisions every day, big and small. Decision fatigue makes adult life so much more challenging than it should be.
When it comes to the most despised aspects of being an adult, Bolde notes that number one is the fact that bills never stop coming. There’s also the fact that your body doesn’t function the same way that it did when you were a teenager. Staying up late, having a few drinks, or getting injured will take a much larger toll on you than it did in the past. You don’t bounce back as quickly, and you have to plan your life accordingly.
Something else that nobody warns you about before you become an adult is how difficult it is to make friends or maintain friendships. In college, all of your friends probably lived within close proximity to each other. But after graduation, people spread out across the country, or even across the globe. And suddenly, everyone is busy with work and personal obligations, and it becomes nearly impossible to even schedule a dinner with your buddies. Especially after they’re married with kids!
Another aspect of being an adult that’s a total drag is the fact that your “free” time often turns into running errands and doing chores. Unless you work from home, you’re never going to have the chance to do laundry, clean the house, and meal prep during working hours. So your evenings and weekends can barely be considered free. You have to find the time to balance your hobbies and social life alongside keeping your life in order. And of course, you still need to get a good night’s sleep if you want to stay healthy.

You start looking at daybeds for the lounge instead of a replacement sofa.
We hope that this article doesn’t come off as too negative, though, pandas. Adulthood is full of responsibilities and challenges, but it doesn’t have to be miserable. In fact, it’s important that you still find ways to incorporate joy and whimsy into your life; otherwise, you might just go crazy. Kathleen Alfano, Child Development and Play Expert, recommends planning time for play into your day, so you don’t go without it. This can be as simple as daydreaming or finding opportunities to smile and laugh; as long as you’re experiencing joy, you’re on the right track.
A great way to experience more joy in your life is by reconnecting with your inner child. And an easy way to do so is by spending time with actual kids. If you’re an uncle or aunt, or you have close friends with children, find time to babysit them or hang out with them. Children have amazing imaginations, and the way that they view the world is so beautiful. Simply spending time with them can inspire you to look at the world in an entirely new way.

But are you at the age where you think, "WHY THE FÙCK DOES A TOASTER NEED AN APP?"
Until that becomes your every day reality and you can’t do much else because your body is too broken to do anything. And you literally have to set goals like, stand up for 10 seconds, step outside at least once, tell yourself you are good enough…..
Wow,I've got £1500 and my bills are already paid! *dashboard warning light* MWHAHAHAHA!
Cooking after a gym visit...could explain why so many just have protein shakes these days instead of cooking.

My brain thinks I’m 18. My body thinks I’m 108. I’m 53 so it averages out, I guess.
After work you can do whatever you want after; shopping, cooking, cleaning, laundry, and sorting the kids. Welcome to the "sleepkills" zone.
The most exciting school trip I ever had was to the Ideal Homes Exhibition, in Earls Court, London in the 80s. And that was only because the trip had been officially cancelled due to the IRA starting their Christmas bombing campaign, but, we all went anyway. The highlight being the look on the faces of the shop assistants as a a group of Black Country comprehensive school kids piled into shops on Oxford Street that were selling grossly overpriced tat. Such as a string vest for £50.
Doesn’t everyone do this? I swear I can remember doing this as a teenager.
Oh yes. Payday. The day I check my balance and subtract all of my bills to find out how much I can spend on groceries, only to realize they need to pay me for my groceries because negative numbers don’t spend
Or,for the first one, going straight to work after clubbing because you didn't have time to go home.
Yep. That is me. And I will continue to bump and thump my music till I d*e. Mostly because I’m half deaf from listening to really loud music in the car and in the club when I was barely legal
When you are very old you can start to behave like a child again ....
Stop pretending. Everyone knows that everyone else is bùllshìttìng, just like they are.
As soon as I left the corporate world I stopped drinking coffee. I love the smell, but don't really like the taste. However I drank it by the bucket in office jobs because Monster energy wasn't freely available in the kitchen but coffee was not only free, but part of my job to order so we always had the blend I liked best.
These are literally all young person issues. Try misplacing your brain for a week, getting up at 5 am because of a doctor's appointment, and falling over for the second time this week. And work that should take one day takes over a month to complete.
