Same here. We have a possum that comes around every night. Our outdoor cat and her neighbor buddy get along with the possum just fine. If they're not cornered, they'll take off if they feel threatened. Our neighborhood possum actually fell over "dead" the first time we met :) I startled it while taking out the trash, and BOOM! I felt so bad.

Maybe it's a stray/feral they feed? Or maybe they're on acreage and the cat also mouses for them... in other words, you have no freaking idea so don't be so rude.

MammaG, what do you mean? Cats are designed to the outdoors, climbing trees and exploring the "wild" neighborhood gardens etc. Not saying indoor cats aren't happy and doing well, but if possible, you should let you cat enjoy the nature outside.

@MammaG Cant see the problem in letting your cat roam outside as it pleases (as long as you don't live in a city with dense traffic). I the town i grew up, people let their cats come and go. Usually they would stay in the yard or return when hungry, but sometimes they would be out exploring for a day or two.

Wait, your cat "comes home?" Cats should never, ever be left outside. It is dangerous to them and bird species. Don't do that to your cat, please.

Jesus. Opossums don't fight adult cats. They aren't even violent animals. If threatened they prefer to scuttle away, and if they can't they will show their teeth and hiss. If that doesn't work and they are attacked, they will either fight back or play dead. The cat can be injured sure but saying it can win 'every time' is just ludicrous. This Opossum doesn't do those things because he can see this particular cat isn't a real threat.
