“Not My Job To Shrink”: Plus-Size Woman Hits Back At Trolls Who Want Her To Pay Extra To Fly

A plus-sized activist, who has been “fighting for fat liberation,” clapped back at critics for comparing her body to luggage and demanding she pay extra to fly.

Jaelynn Chaney, 28, said it was “dehumanizing” to see netizens condemn her for saying airlines should give free extra tickets to plus-size fliers.

“Want to fight fatphobia with me?⁣” the content creator asked her 140K followers on TikTok and her 93.9K-strong audience on Instagram.

Highlights
  • Influencer Jaelynn Chaney has been asking airlines to offer free extra tickets to plus-size fliers.
  • In a recent video, she said it was time to “break down” all the “fatphobic solutions” people were offering her when it came to air travel.
  • She slammed haters who “compared to luggage” and asked her to pay extra.
  • “Charging by weight is fatphobic and dehumanizing,” she said.

The woman from Tri-Cities in Washington said it was time to “break down” all the “fatphobic solutions’” people were offering her when it came to air travel.

She then explained why the “solutions” were merely “excuses to keep fat people from having equal access and rights.”

“It’s time to stop treating fat people like we don’t deserve the same dignity and respect,” she added.

In the clip uploaded in January, she rebutted people’s suggestions, starting with the top suggestion: “Just lost weight.”

She questioned why she had to change her entire body to accommodate other people’s comfort and said, “It’s not my job to shrink myself to fit into spaces that were never designed for me in the first place.”

While giving her “rebuttal” to the “Don’t fly then” suggestion, the internet star sarcastically asked if she should stop living her life because the world wasn’t “built” for her.

The content creator fired back at netizens for their “fatphobic solutions”

“Telling fat people to just stay home is not a solution—it’s exclusion,” she declared.

Another “suggestion” she debunked was the idea of being “charged by weight” in the way someone pays “extra for luggage.”

“So my body is being compared to luggage?” she asked. “Charging by weight is fatphobic and dehumanizing.”

“I’m not a suitcase,” she added.

“Charging by weight is fatphobic and dehumanizing,” she told her audience in a recent video

The TikToker said paying extra for luggage is an entirely different issue, but the conversation she wanted to have was one about “fair” and “equal” treatment of all passengers.

Viewers slammed her opinions in the comments section, with one saying, “The lack of personal responsibility and accountability here is epic.”

“Flying is a luxury, not a right. That is simply the truth. Should we make flights cheaper because there are people who can’t afford a flight?” asked one commenter.

Viewers criticized her explanations, saying she was lacking “personal responsibility and accountability”

“It’s not the airlines job to change their seats to accommodate you??” another wrote.

“I’m very short and so I always check my bags bc I can’t reach the overhead bin,” said another. “Should the overhead bins be lowered to accommodate me? No – and I’d never expect it.”

On the other hand, one supporter said, “Don’t listen to the haters, you don’t need to change.”

The plus-size activist previously accused an airport employee of discriminating against her for not offering wheelchair assistance

Jaelynn previously went viral for saying it was “non inclusive” for public swimming pools not to have handrails.

“Make handrails mandatory at all pools for swimmers of every size and ability,” she said in a video last year.

On another occasion, the 28-year-old woman claimed an employee at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport refused to assist her after she had requested a “plus-size wheelchair.”

Accusing the staffer of discrimination, the plus-size woman said, “I almost fainted, this was my first time flying without oxygen.

If your weight is extreme enough to count as two adults take up extra space or anything else then you must pay for the difference. I don't understand how these people weigh as much as a young elephant and yet they want to try to defend that saying it doesn't affect or change things

Since airlines are not gonna make larger seats for big people, then yeah, they should pay for an extra seat. Not because of weight, but because of space. I wouldn't want to be the unlucky one guy to buy the seat next to her.

My husband is 6'5 and he has to pay for extra leg room so I don't see why it should be any different for weight. Those are the breaks kid. I will say that I think the amount of room they give you on a plane is ridiculous though, people can't even recline 2 inches without bothering the person behind them.

I have flat feet and need to spend more on shoes with decent arch support than the average person. My husband was very tall so we had to buy larger vehicles than we would have done otherwise. If you have special needs you need to deal with it. I'm not phobic of fat but I don't want to pay more for my airline ticket so that somebody who needs two seats doesn't have to. How would it be less dehumanizing to sit in an obviously extra wide seat? There are existing solutions. Buy two seats. Buy a first class seat. If disability is made to include everything then nothing is a disabilty. I have other issues besides flat feet. Most everybody does. Putting one's own needs ahead of everybody else's is selfish and worthy of judgement. Making eveybody suffer because you have issue X is selfish and worthy of judgement. Cope with your issues rather than making them everybody's issues.

If someone needs bigger clothes or shoes, they are expected to pay more. I don't see that space on a plane is different. It would be nice if seats could be adjusted in some way to fit larger people, but I hope she realises she'll be paying for two seats then.

My only problem with this activist is that in my opinion she is saying it's okay to be obese and unhealthy. It's not okay at all you are causing your own health problems. So there's a huge difference between with body positivity stuff and saying it's okay to be unhealthy.

Airplanes are mostly designed to be able to move a lot of people somewhere at a reasonable cost, unlike in the golden age of flying. She's just trying to get free stuff for her life choices. I could certainly lose the 25 pounds I need to lose if I tried. My own fault. I do not blame anyone else and I do not ask for freebies

Losing 25 lbs is not the same mountain as losing 250. I hear you, and i don't disagree, but her body is not your body, and projecting the ease with which you move in your body onto another is textbook ableism. I am not defending her attitude, merely her points about disability accommodations

The world (for the most part) was built for the expectation of the average sized adult. She, however, is not the average sized adult. This is not a comment about go lose weight or she's should stop this and that, this is basically a reap what you sow type argument. For example, you got yourself to that size and you can be proud of your body and size, that is fine, but you have to expect that no one is going to cater to you or your issues. It is about being an adult and taking responsibility for yourself.

If you can prove a medical condition that has got you that grossly big, then yes, airlines could try to accommodate IF they have availability. But if you are embracing being that big, then you can pay for the space you use. The person who now has a third of a seat because your bulk is all over theirs should get a discount while half your fat a*s gets a free ride?

As a fat (my choice of term) woman, I disagree with her view. If I need two seats, and I was close to this at one point were it not for my partner always travelling with me, then I should pay for them . Still won’t be comfortable because who is on a plane. There are some accommodations I think would be good for large people, like could waiting room seats in medical offices be wider or with no arms, but as a whole my size is my problem.

If I paid a flight with my hard earned money and then spend 4 hours with someone's rolls squeezing me l would demand at least a partial refund. And so would a lot of people. So basically the airline is covering their a*s so as not to pay a dime. It's not about size, it's all about profit. And they only accommodate people with disabilities because they're obligated by law, make no mistake. If they could, they wouldn't.

This may not be a popular view, but seat spaces are very small, and I would bet that 95% of flights have passengers who are too tall, too heavy, or both (my ex was both overweight and 6'5". We'd book the front row seat so we'd have legroom, but those seats would have an armrest control box that effectively narrowed the seat by 3 inches or so. Realistically having some seats (and yeah, maybe charge more for them, but not 1st class level $$$) to fit real people's bodies would make things more comfortable for everyone.

The thing is, if someone needs a wheelchair and accommodation for that, nobody bats an eye. and nobody asked if they are to blame for not being able to walk anymore - maybe they were run over by the father of the girl they r***d, or drove DUI? And we shouldn't ask. We. Should. Not. Ask. Other people's health issues aren't our business. But hey, where would all the people with inferiority complex would put their hate and judgment if society wouldn't give them overweight people as a scapegoat?

I am SUPER torn on this. It is NOT easy for a person who got that fat to just...lose...it. that takes money, that most people don't have. It costs money to eat well, and to afford the meds required to help a person whose physiology has now changed to hold onto that fat as hard as it can. It isn't as simple as eating less. Extreme body size IS disabing, and should be accommodated for, no matter whose fault it was. Example: we accommodate a person who is in a wheelchair without questioning HOW they ended up there. Maybe they were drunk and played stupid games, and won a stupid prize. Point is, the disability exists, and unless we totally dismantle the ADA like we did the VRA, we need to provide reasonable accommodations to disabilities, regardless their origin. We make private businesses bear the cost of retrofitting their buildings to be more accessible. Planes should absolutely not be different. That said, i have been fat, i have been morbidly-obese-fat, although i still "fit"...cont'd

I see your point but you can't do anything to get out of said wheelchair. It doesn't matter how or why but that is a problem that can't be fixed. However losing weight although not easy can be done. It can be done without medication. I've had to lose it it wasn't easy but not impossible.

Good for her, challenging current thinking, and demanding that everyone is treated with kindness and humanity. It's not just people living with obesity that has these problems, but generally large humans (very tall and proportionately wide) also struggle. It's very likely that so many people are living with overweight and obesity because of the s.h.i.t.e. they're being sold as normal food. It's bad enough in the UK, but I dread to think how bad it is in the USA. I'm not talking about crisps, sweets, takeaways, etc. I'm talking about bread, breakfast cereals, meat, soup, sauces, cold cuts, and so on. Some people end up living with heart disease or cancer because of this, and we don't blame them, but if instead it results in overweight then suddenly it's a question of morality. Our governments need to stop conspiring with the food industry to ensure profits over their own people's health, and we need to be as caring about people with overweight

I don't really understand how it's fair to other people that she gets a free seat. If someone is hungover than another person and order more, they don't have to pay the same as the person who got less, even though they're hungrier. It's ridiculous that she made bad choices in life and everyone else is expected to accommodate her

People are looking at this all wrong. What if the plane crashes in a remote mountain range, and passengers are not rescued for months?

My only problem with this activist is that in my opinion she is saying it's okay to be obese and unhealthy. It's not okay at all you are causing your own health problems. So there's a huge difference between with body positivity stuff and saying it's okay to be unhealthy.

She even says it was her first time flying WITHOUT OXYGEN, for crying out loud. She f*****g needs oxygen to fly but refuses to lose weight. Instead of making airport staff miserable for likes on social media she needs therapy and stop stuffing her mouth

Im fat as f**k and If i have to board a flight I will happily pay for 2 seats. My body is not other peoples problem. Im currently on my weight loss journey and doing great (still a long way to go) and not once do I expect the world to conform to my needs.

As long as airlines doesn't have a few bigger seats available she needs to pay for two seats. Why should someone paying for one seat sitting next to a very big person only get half a seat?

As a fat (my choice of term) woman, I disagree with her view. If I need two seats, and I was close to this at one point were it not for my partner always travelling with me, then I should pay for them . Still won’t be comfortable because who is on a plane. There are some accommodations I think would be good for large people, like could waiting room seats in medical offices be wider or with no arms, but as a whole my size is my problem.

Either this woman or the BP author needs to understand the difference between "debunk" and "reject". Rejecting a solution as not workable or undesirable is not "debunking" it. People think they can just use whatever word they want now. I banana the fridge under spicy whorls. He understand there, wrong?

Actually, plus-sized people are entitled to fly in first class. It's the law. The law that was handed down in the Bible. Why is this even a discussion?

It used to be comfortable because it used to be something a lot of people couldn't afford. Nothing has changed much really. You can still have comfort, but outside the working class means.
