40 Jokes And Memes About The 1990s Shared In This Online Group That Today’s Kids Won’t Understand
Even though I’m happy with my life as it is now, I do miss the ‘90s and my childhood. When I’m feeling a bit blue, I tend to get nostalgic: I watch old cartoons, I get out my GameBoy color, I go outside and try to rediscover the sense of adventure every kid has when they’re small. Though it might be the rose-colored goggles talking, I genuinely feel that the ‘90s was a better, calmer time—especially compared to how complicated and confusing modern life is.
Today, we’re bringing you a big dose of nostalgia if you grew up in the ‘90s. We’re featuring the r/90s subreddit, a popular online group that shares posts and pics related to “everything about the 1990s.” Scroll down, upvote your fave pics, and let us know in the comments what you miss about the ‘90s the most.
Pssst, Pandas, when you’re done with this list, here are two more Bored Panda articles that will take you down nostalgia lane here (‘90s and 2000s) and here (obsolete things).

totally cool with being old, getting this joke, AND the fact that there are 60 others here that are the same. Cheers!
Load More Replies...Some people just like to feel special and saying "nobody else will get it, I'm so old" is a great way to do that.

Load More Replies...If the tape deck accidentally caught the tape and pulled it out, you could sometimes save it by putting a pencil in the hole and rewinding it.

My mom n dad still have a PC that runs on windows 98... And we have a version nobody else seems to remember. Instead of a home screen, it looked like the inside of a "home" with different doors leading to different programs. Think it was a student edition of some sort. Anyone else remember this?

I’d gone in-depth about nostalgia for the past in a couple of great interviews with child and adolescent therapist Kemi Omijeh, who is based in London and is a member of the BACP.
"The period of time we tend to be nostalgic over are significant moments that stood out. Perhaps it was a time when we felt happiest or safest, or perhaps it’s a period where things changed for us,” she told Bored Panda.
"Our memories of the past can change over time depending on how often we revisit and also depending on what is going on for us in the present,” the therapist said.
Latchkey Kids Unite!
We used to roam about the whole neighbourhood and even beyond... and our parents were grateful. Of course, we were taught about safety. We have stayed at home when TV meant just one or two channels. This is Pre-90s India
My mom tells tales of her roaming freely in the mid-afternoons... and I feel so jealous tbh
Load More Replies...No mobiles, no CCTV. No internet. Sweet old time's. I'm so sorry for todays kids. Short leash they got. 😎
In many countries this is still normal. America is particularly paranoid about having kids in sight every minute of the day but other western nations aren't far behind. It's a shame. How are kids supposed to get resilient or independent if they're never allowed to do anything?
Yes I find it really odd. My nephew is not even allowed to walk to school by himself & he's 13, his older brother (16) gets collected from school every day. They are never out if sight from parents/teachers. I was 'out playing' for hours on end from about 9. I had so much fun & learnt so much, making friends, building dens etc. I also really worry about his lack of street-smarts as him & his brother so wrapped in cotton wool. (UK)
Load More Replies...Well back then it was far more likely for there to be a "stay at home mom", so the kids wouldn't be home alone.
Load More Replies...When I was a kid in the 80s/90s, we literally used to play on the railway lines near my house. Lived on the edge of a town with nothing but countryside in one direction. Nobody was hit by a train or drowned in the river, although I do realise that the railway track thing was stupid. We were out all day, my poor mum had to bellow at the top of her fragile lungs to get me home for dinner.
born in the mid 70s, I was a kid in the 80s. both my parents had more than two jobs to make it, and I was just fine. grew up pretty decent human being. and dont start saying there was less violence, less cars, less everything. nope... same BS back then, only we didnt talk about it (doesnt make it right, of course). just to say.... parents of Millennials and later generations have teeny-tiny exaggerated....
In the US, there's less crime now, including violent crime, except sadly for homicide. Apparently it's been going down for decades but you'd never know it from the way it's covered. Heard a news item recently get introduced with "just TRY not to get your car broken into," as if it was a futile task. Not to say crime isn't a problem no matter the amount, but it would be helpful if the danger was presented more accurately.
Load More Replies...Oh heck yeah and until the lights came home they had no idea where you were.
When I was younger, the street lamps were my curfew. I had to be home once they come home. We roamed the neighborhood with no worries.

Load More Replies...Minesweeper... I never and still do not know how or what the logic of the game is...

Load More Replies...She joked that "of course, the '90s was better! But then again, I may be being very biased here." According to Kemi, our impressions of each decade are directly influenced by who we were during those time periods.
"Generally speaking, the better decade is associated with youth and freedom. Nostalgia also often gives us rose-tinted glasses from which to reflect. How we reflect on the past decades can play a part in how we engage with the current decade,” she said.

Load More Replies..."Many psychologists, myself included, believe our childhood is the foundation to who we are as adults. It explains why we frequently revisit our childhood as it influences our present," the therapist told Bored Panda that we’re nostalgic for the times that we felt nurtured and loved.
However, the opposite is also true. “If we’ve had a difficult childhood, it can be hard to feel nostalgic, instead it will feel like something we need to get over in order to move on," she said.

"Nostalgia can also be a good coping strategy for times of low mood and challenges," she said, warning that we should keep in mind that if it starts preventing us from living in the present, we should start getting worried.
“If we end up comparing it to our experiences today and feeling like nothing is as good as it was, then this will inevitably affect our mood and our ability to do what we need to do. We can become stuck in our nostalgia; in which case it might be best to seek help from a counseling professional to help you process your past in order to enjoy your present,” she said.

This was true in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, too -- in many ways, it was a simpler, safer time.
Simpler, yes. Safer, only due to limited info and ignorance hiding the horrors.

When I was in school in the 60s and 70s, it was super cool if you got an actual film. Most of the time, though, you got a boring filmstrip.
Nothing. Like teel to reel! We could take a bathroom break while they rewound the first one then wove the next reel into the machine.
Load More Replies...Ugh, I'm old enough to remember the reels being wheeled in... this was later in my elementary school days.
Goals
I tell my students to use Google Translate whenever they feel they need it (I teach English as a foreign language). It is a dictionary they have on hand at all times, they might as well learn how to use it smartly.
Well it's about time cause it makes way more sense and it is so much more precise. There's a reason Switzerland is the master of watchmaking and not the US 😂
Load More Replies...Yeah. But you still shouldn't have to open an app to figure out how much to tip. Just like you should learn cursive just so you can read it, even if you never write it. Learning basic things is about learning how to learn. Its the foundation upon which you grow.
Your still have to know the basic computations you will need to do to get the numbers you need.
"you gotta go door to door and apply in person, or you'll never get hired"
And an entire encyclopedia, articles for research, dictionary, Thesaurus etc. What a time to be alive! Take that 90's teacher :)

Marbles are still around and were around before the 90s. This is not a 90s thing.
They were around in 2500 BCE according to Wikipedia!!! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marble_(toy)
Load More Replies...Used to be a haulage firm near our primary school and the men would give us 'steelies' (old ball bearings) which were worth 3x the hits of glass marbles ;o)
We used to get "puries" which were basically stained glass. We used to heat them in a cast iron frying pan until they crackled. We also melted old '78 records and made snack bowls out of them.
Load More Replies...Wow, that really kicked in some nostalgia and good child memories. But I think they also existed way before the 90s.
I once saw a short documentary on how marbles like this are made. It was mesmerising.
Wish I Could Experience This Again
Heck yeah! My mom and I would go to Blockbuster, pick a few movies and a Nintendo 64 game, and go pick up some pizza. Great times, great times...

If not sexualized, definitely body-conscious and fashion-conscious -- neither of which should be part of a kid's life.
Load More Replies...When kids clothes were designed for playing outdoors and being durable for tree climbing, bog hopping and secret caves in the back of the woods. 😍😂
They dressed girls like that about a century ago and we burned bras for the right to wear those ugly pants and throw that dress in the wind.
Be thankful you all did not grow up in the 60’s and 70’s. Gawd fashion was hideous

Yes, and now there is internet to tell everyone how grateful I am not to have internet back then 😋

I'm not saying my childhoodtimes were the best, I'm saying I'm glad I got to experience the world when internet wasn't around.
Load More Replies...Y'all know everybody thinks the world was the best when they were kids and then everything went to s**t.
I don't think it went to s**t, lots of things are WAY better these days than they were when I was young, however I do feel that knowing what the world used to be like without internet available at every turn is a good thing. It let's you put things in perspective, and helps in choosing what to put online and what not.
Load More Replies...I agree. We used to go off on adventures on our BMXs for hours at a time. As long as you were home before dark (apparently child-snatchers only operated in the dark and it was inconceivable that a kid would be abducted in broad daylight). Kids these days think bikes are just for pizza delivery.
I wonder if, suppose you were to pull up the stats, there has been an increase in child abductions over the past thirty years or so and if so, what the role of the internet is. Is the internet the 'saviour' from child abductions or has it facilitated it in some sort of way?
Load More Replies...Yes, and no regrets! I honestly think my kids will never have as much fun as I did as a kid.
Who's With Me?
I want to exist, though. I can't go to a time when I wasn't born yet, that's simply illogical.
I'd prefer the '70s, but if the '90s are the best deal I can get, I'll take it. :-)

Yes at my kids school too but things are WAY more expensive.
Load More Replies...me: too poor to buy s**t but still went to the book fair to look at the books
Same here but my parents let me buy one or two from the bargain table
Load More Replies...My youngest just turned 21. I can still remember going to her book fair in 5th grade and damn near having a heart attack when 1 book for me, 3 for her, a pencil and a book mark cost me almost $65 dollars! I'm big on reading and getting them books, but after that she got $10 for cutesy stuff only. After school, we went to the used bookstore and/or the big box store (depending on what she wanted) and we would buy books for far less. Scholastic Books for elementary are flimsy and WAY over priced these days
We still have these but the price of books is not cheap. $6 won’t get you a book, and I work at a school in a very low income area :(
...these still exist. they existed in my childhood too lol (im a teen)

Yeah, we had similar rules. Also, when mobile phones first were used, the calls were much more expensive than calls with the landline. Especially if the other person had a different provider. It may still be that way, but now we hardly use the phone for normal calls any more

Load More Replies...I was thinking about these the other day and wondering if they still exist. They were so much cheaper than bath bombs.
Me too. That's wild. I would have never remembered they ever existed. I thought I loved these right up until I realized they actually kind of suck.

Fridays At Blockbuster
I miss Blockbuster. I went through a post divorce period where I kept myself to myself. I knew the people at Blockbuster by name and they knew mine. Guy named Robert learned my taste in films from conversations. If he saw me reaching for something while he was on the floor, he'd either shake his head or nod. Good times. Jasmine would try to sell me on their membership program (up to three movies with no late fees) every time I came in knowing I wouldn't take it. It became an inside joke.
I can smell this picture. That popcorny, plastic-y, office carpety smell
It was a mad house!! I worked at Blockbuster in my late teens. So many angry people when we ran out of the new releases and them not knowing I was hiding one in the back for myself. 🤣
I worked at a competitor, Movie Gallery. Known for its back room full of porn lmao.

They Were The Best
Captain Planet being cancelled can be directly linked to the global warming that followed. Fact
I'm still frustrated with how underrated this show is. The dialogue was very thoughtful and intelligent, the stories were FASCINATING, the love stories were actually layered and complex and best of all, the villains (Xanatos, Owen, Demona...) were respectable and interesting rather than just being cliché "evil." One of Disney's unsung gems.

As the child of military parents, who went to 4 schools in 4 years between the ages of 5 and 9 (and had moved 3 times from the time I was born until I was 5) , this was my normal. Went to boarding school for 8 years after this to get some stability - not the best place academically or generally but most of my closest friends all come from that period of my life.

90s Pizza Hut
And stickers for reading books. I can't remember exactly how the program worked, but Pizza Hut definitely sponsored some sort of literacy reward program in the 90s.
I remembered I stopped liking Pizza Hut because I had almost all of the Land Before Time character puppets they were giving away, but they never had one in stock. Cera. And then I got over it and ate Pizza Hut again.

How does a company with 6 multi billion dollar franchises get away with begging for money?
Your local PBS does not own those billion dollar franchises, they have to pay for them just like your local station has to pay for Friends re-runs. Its how all new episodes of Sesame Street are on HBO for 9 months before PBS is legally allowed to show them. HBO bought the rights to them from the Sesame Workshop. Barney and Veggie Tales were made by a VHS tape and toy distributor who took the Hasbro model and made direct-to-video tapes around toys they made. A PBS producer in Dallas saw one at a birthday party and his local station got permission to broadcast the tapes.

Add paleontologist to it as well. Every kid wanted to be one after Jurassic Park came out. My local museum has the 4th largest dinosaur collection in the world. They employ 3 paleontologists and have over 500 volunteers. One of the best exhibits is the lab where you can watch 72 year old retired grandmas through a window clean up fossilized ferns and animals. Dinosaur National Monument has exactly 1 paleontologist.
@ Two_rolling_black_eyes : Indeed, the demand for such jobs is very low. I always dreamed to become an archaeologist or paleontologist. Fortunately I had the opportunity talking to a few before starting the professional education. They basically told me that just a lucky few would get those jobs as we can see in documentaries, most others would end up in a much less exciting environment. That made me choose a different direction. Now it's research within the field of biomedical materials

This is waay off topic but I can't stand gamers complaining about fps. The human eye perceives 30-60 fps max. Its why every TV show and movie is shot somewhere between 24-30 fps. If you think you can see more, you're lying to yourself. If you see skips in your game, thats not a bad frame rate, thats a bad game creating crappy images.

Otter pops make every kid happy and always will. The company keeps freezers full of free ones in pretty much every cancer ward in children's hospitals. The kids can grab them whenever they want. I had a friend in high school who worked as a bag boy at our local grocery store whose duties included having him stopping by our local hospital after school every day and refilling the freezer. He had boxes of each flavor in his trunk so if little Johnny was eating all the grape, he could put extra grape in it.
Load More Replies...Nah Nah, that's the Super Soaker 75. I had that and got made fun of for being poor. The Super Soaker 150 was the one to own.
I had that one too and it was so loved in my neighborhood!

Follow Up Question. Do U Remember The Scene That Happens Right Before You Have To Change The Tape?
You lived in the 90s if you had more than 3 copies of each of the original Star Wars Trilogy movies. Normal VHS, Lucas' special edition VHS , a box set with the special covers (Mint Gold version now sells for over $1500), then bought them again as DVDs.

Yes, but no. In case you're an antivax nut, know that garden hoses don't prevent COVID. Go get your vaccine.
Garden hose absolutely prevent covid spread. It is January now, cold water will keep people in good distance.

He was always a scumbag but that was part of his charm. Every woman he was linked to had very bad things to say to him but it just made him edgy. I can remember Rose McGowan crying on E! after she left him. Every member of his band sued him for not paying them during the 90s (lawsuits were in the 90s).
Not as a scumbag per se, just a freaky weirdo... which I'm pretty sure everyone knew, even at the time.
If even half of the stuff he has been accused of is true (and I suspect that it's more than half true) then he absolutely is a total scumbag.

Loved that book, haven't read it in years! I'm worried if I re-read it it will not hold up to my recollections
Yeah, sometimes it's best to hold on to memories and not revisit. It hasn't held up well. Indigenous folks were even calling it out at the time for perpetuating stereotypes and being harmful. (https://americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com/2006/08/indian-in-cupboard-series-by-lynne.html)

THE INDIAN IN THE CUPBOARD!!!! I love that book so much! I remember skipping through most of the second book to find the point where Bright Star has her baby; that was my favorite part XD. My favorite character was good ol' Boohoo Boone. Anyone else?

Yes, but now they're basically a magnet over the door to steal all your money
Load More Replies...My mom worked here for years when i was younger. When the Lion King came out they had a special screening for employees after the store was closed (before it was in theatres). I got to watch it on their big screen with all the little stuffed animals they had in front of it! A forever memory ^_^
The last Disney Store I went into I was underwhelmed. The decor, the experience, the products on display were watered down.

I would pay good yankee currency for set of them red plastic tumblers.
Makes me miss Pizza King in NE Indiana. Most of the locations around my hometown still have this vibe. And the cheese and breadsticks was lit af.
Man That’s Crazy
To be fair, Doug, the TV show turns 31. The character was 11 when the show premiered, so he'd be 42.
I had this conversation the other day 😂 watching it he was a few years older than me and it made no sense that he’d be 31 when I’m 34.

Memphis Style is a design concept that you see here, the very nostalgic 80s-90s stuff. It just went out of style unfortunately.
Load More Replies...The focus has changed. Nick started off as loss leader for WB so they could sell HBO to cable companies. They used to enforce rules regarding educational/children's programs. It shared its channel with what eventually became A&E so it only aired a couple hours a day. WB then sold it off and that's when it blew up and eventually opened the studio above in Universal Orlando. Things ended with a big restructuring where Nick was folded into a new company and the new CEO converted the building above into a workshop for the Blue Man Group's props (really) and the official studio moved to California on a street. Its been years but I'm still mad about taking kids to see it and being told it was now a props workshop. The follow up studio in CA folded a couple years later because it was no longer "cost effective".

I think pogs are at least a few years older than everything else here. Their popularity was pretty faded by the time the N64 came out - at least where I lived.

Woodstock 94 And 1998 Dial-Up
Top photo was fairly accurate during music festival season. Glastonbury was much better back then!
I suppose it depends on the person, chances, fate... Mine was the bottom image. But I wouldn't have liked to be muddy as in the top picture anyway.
The 90s was muddy? I lived through it, and I don't recognize that top photo. The bottom one though is spot on.
Top photo looks like woodstock '99. Such a dumpster fire of a festival but they did recreate the muddy scenes of the '69 version.

Even Taco Bell In The 90’s Was A Different Vibe!
In 1992, they built a multistory Taco Bell in Athens, OH that had a plaque hanging outside from the Guinness Book of World Records for the world's largest restaurant. It was open 22x7. Closed from 4-6am every day for cleaning. It had no breakfast menu but you could get a $.49 taco or 3 for $1 on the way to school at 7am.
Taco Bell? It's a large fast food chain that makes cheap, super Americanized, Mexican food. I like it.

The 90's was a good time period. The Berlin wall had fallen, the cold war was over, and 9/11 had not happend yet. There was no great evil enemy to the west, and global warming was not so critical yet. A relatively care free period (unless you lived in Yugoslavia of course)
The great evil enemy was pure propaganda. If you talk to the people who lived in countries that weren't strongly aligned with USSR or the USA, they would tell you that this fear of nuclear annihilation etc wasn't a thing in their lives.
