Hurricane Ida has devastated 6 states in the US north-east. The flash-flooding and tornadoes have killed dozens of people and the final death toll isn’t clear yet. The BBC reports at least 45 people dead, CNN reports at least 46, while The New York Times places the toll at 43. The NYT states that many of those who lost their lives were killed in basement apartments in a storm that was caused by the remnants of a hurricane that struck New Orleans earlier.

To understand just how serious the situation is, the National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Emergency for NYC. For the very first time in history. It’s yet another piece of proof that climate change is very real and that its effects are horrendous. US President Joe Biden said that “historic investment” is needed to deal with the current climate crisis, which is “a matter of life and death.”

Photos from NYC show the apocalyptic flooding that the city’s inhabitants are having to deal with. And it is as terrifying as it is heartbreaking.

I know what your mean! In 2014 in Manitoba, Canada, our parents' basement had flooded and we NEVER had water in that basement during the time I was growing up on the family farm near Beulah, Manitoba, Canada! We had culverts that had water pouring out of them and it was at the end of June to the beginning of July!

Thousands of people were left without power. However, transit in NYC is slowly returning to normal after the flooding on Friday.

Bill de Blasio, New York City’s mayor, said that the devastation was “the biggest wake-up call we could possibly get,” referring to climate change.

"We are in a new world now, let's be blunt," de Blasio said. He added that the US will have to do a lot of things “differently” and “quickly,” as the frequency and intensity of storms rise in the country.

According to CNN, over 20 million people remain under flood warnings. Some rivers in the US north-east are likely to remain flooded into Friday and even the weekend.

Storm Ida made landfall on Sunday, August 29, as a Category 4 hurricane. Though it reduced in intensity as it approached the north-east of the country, it nonetheless wreaked havoc.

“I want to know who knew what when and what could have been done differently—because New Yorkers deserve to know what we're doing to learn from this event and make sure that it doesn't happen again,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul told CNN, advocating for moving toward carbon-neutral energy.

“We have no choice, my friends, the future we spoke about in dire terms, that future is now. It's happening, we're losing lives we're losing property and we cannot continue on this path,” Hochul said.

Flash flooding happens when rain falls so fast that the underlying ground cannot cope, or drain it away fast enough. Parts of the US had Storm Ida to deal with. The rain was falling too fast for the ground or drains to cope.

Joseph Georgiadis - I don't think you appreciate just how dangerous floodwaters can be. The driver could have just abandoned those passengers on the wrong side of the flooding but he did his best to get them to their homes etc. It's not huge heroism but what else do you call putting yourself at risk for the benefit of strangers?

In these cases renting doesn't seem so bad

Maybe, but I'm concerned for all these people beyond just the immediate danger of the flooding. The problem is, a lot of rental properties just became unlivable for the medium term so where's everyone that rented them going to go? If you own, your insurance covers you while the place is being repaired. Do renters have that protection in NYC?

It used to be very rare but scarily, it's becoming more common over the last few years. I'm in south eastern Pennsylvania, and we've had three tornado emergencies within the last couple of months. It's insane and scary. We don't have a basement so my husband and our two little boys were holed up in a downstairs (small but walk-in) closet.

Have a friend who lives on Cape Cod. On the day this was happening in NYC, she and her husband had to shelter in the basement of their home 5 different times during the day because of tornado warnings. Just warnings, tornado never happened.

When the East Coast starts getting tornados, it might be time to rethink our consumer choices that are causing climate change.

We had to have a special company come in to help move things, throw damaged things out, clean, sanitize, then remove parts of some walls, steam the support beams, and appliances. Cost a pretty penny.

It is. People died in their cars during the flood. And in buildings. If you want details: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/02/nyregion/nyc-flooding-deaths.html

The USA just seems to be having endless bad luck or is it mismanagement?

Yes. Natural weather occurrences are mismanagement.

It could have been ordered before the heavy rain came. Trust me, when it ehavy rains it raise water very fast. Like when it starts up on the mountains here first you will see the rivesr raise fast with 30 minutes.

And what does it say about our country when someone feels they have to deliver food to some selfish jackass, on a bike, in these conditions, during a pandemic? I'm on the Welcome the Comet Committee. This place sucks.

Am I the only one that started thinking about TLC's Waterfalls song/music video? This is crazy I can't imagine what these poor people are dealing with. You don't feel safe at home but it's not safe to travel.

Almost all of Manhattan's electric main is underground, in tunnels. Water plus electricity makes pretty sparks!
