Hurricane Ida has devastated 6 states in the US north-east. The flash-flooding and tornadoes have killed dozens of people and the final death toll isn’t clear yet. The BBC reports at least 45 people dead, CNN reports at least 46, while The New York Times places the toll at 43. The NYT states that many of those who lost their lives were killed in basement apartments in a storm that was caused by the remnants of a hurricane that struck New Orleans earlier.
To understand just how serious the situation is, the National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Emergency for NYC. For the very first time in history. It’s yet another piece of proof that climate change is very real and that its effects are horrendous. US President Joe Biden said that “historic investment” is needed to deal with the current climate crisis, which is “a matter of life and death.”
Photos from NYC show the apocalyptic flooding that the city’s inhabitants are having to deal with. And it is as terrifying as it is heartbreaking.

You're a massive asshole if you call for delivery during something like that. Eat the ramen you have in the back of your cabinet.
And the company is an even more massive asshole for making the drivers work in those condition
Load More Replies...I'm betting that's some guy getting his own food. There's no way that service would be up in that condition.
If you are the delivery guy and need the money in order to eat, sure there is delivery service.
Load More Replies...Me living in New Jersey and seeing this as local news: ah yes, nothing to see here. This is just local. This is totally normal.
Yes, deliveries were still being made by undaunted employees who then got stiffed on their tips.
Oh my, that is so heartbreaking. Grubhub workers are so hardworking! I would be so mad if someone called Grubhub workers to deliver during Hurricane Ida. Deal with it. Eat something else.
He may just be on his way home with food that couldn't be delivered as a bonus.
"Get a basement apartment in New York they said. It'll be fun they said"
I know we shouldn't joke about this, but this comment was gold
Load More Replies...The poor owners! That room looked nice and now it’s full of manky water
I know what your mean! In 2014 in Manitoba, Canada, our parents' basement had flooded and we NEVER had water in that basement during the time I was growing up on the family farm near Beulah, Manitoba, Canada! We had culverts that had water pouring out of them and it was at the end of June to the beginning of July!

We get these often in Texas and It’s never not been that way. Can’t imagine that not being a thing. NY city is literally on water. How is that possible?
I don't live in US. Please tell me your former president who don't belive in covid or climate change actually lives in NY... better if he actually SEES THE NEWS
No, Paula, he lives in Florida now. Which figures, really...

Thousands of people were left without power. However, transit in NYC is slowly returning to normal after the flooding on Friday.
"Flooding wasn’t the only problem last night as fires broke out on the track and people had to walk through tunnels while abandoning subway cars"
Flooding, underground, gigavolts of electricity, fire.. Suddenly, lockdown at home doesn't seem so bad...
That sounds like a bad joke..."It's flooding AND something is on fire! "
I'm pretty sure at this point all electricity was out.
Load More Replies...Why are you walking in it? I get that New Yorkers probably don't have a regular issue with floods, but do not go walking around in or playing in flood water. It's beyond nasty.
F*ck that. I'm not getting electrocuted for a measly paycheck.
I don't think I'd walk thru a flooded office with so many electrical devices still plugged in.
"Current flooding situation in NYC. NYC recording their highest level of rainfall since 1800"
beats walking *shrug* for real though, feel awful for everyone dealing with the flooding.
that mans is using a horrible situation and turned it into excuse just to try this
Bill de Blasio, New York City’s mayor, said that the devastation was “the biggest wake-up call we could possibly get,” referring to climate change.
"We are in a new world now, let's be blunt," de Blasio said. He added that the US will have to do a lot of things “differently” and “quickly,” as the frequency and intensity of storms rise in the country.
According to CNN, over 20 million people remain under flood warnings. Some rivers in the US north-east are likely to remain flooded into Friday and even the weekend.
What a bizarre way of cleaning up the subway in New York. Ex dictator Trump blamed it on illegal wetbacks, but the undocumented had already left to go back to their shithole countries to dry off.
Ok,so.... being a bit claustrophobic and dying from suffocation being in my top 5 "death I rally would rather avoid", I feel really bad just by watching this. Hope everyone is safe
I’m not sure I would have had the guts to stay there and record it. My scared ass would have run away screaming like a little girl!
Same here and I would be also SCREAMING for everyone to "RUN!"!

Because our hospitals/staff just haven't worked hard enough these past TOO many months.
Storm Ida made landfall on Sunday, August 29, as a Category 4 hurricane. Though it reduced in intensity as it approached the north-east of the country, it nonetheless wreaked havoc.
“I want to know who knew what when and what could have been done differently—because New Yorkers deserve to know what we're doing to learn from this event and make sure that it doesn't happen again,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul told CNN, advocating for moving toward carbon-neutral energy.
“We have no choice, my friends, the future we spoke about in dire terms, that future is now. It's happening, we're losing lives we're losing property and we cannot continue on this path,” Hochul said.
I cannot even imagine what it feels like when your HOME is being flash flooded like this.
Flash flooding happens when rain falls so fast that the underlying ground cannot cope, or drain it away fast enough. Parts of the US had Storm Ida to deal with. The rain was falling too fast for the ground or drains to cope.
Load More Replies...Joseph Georgiadis - I don't think you appreciate just how dangerous floodwaters can be. The driver could have just abandoned those passengers on the wrong side of the flooding but he did his best to get them to their homes etc. It's not huge heroism but what else do you call putting yourself at risk for the benefit of strangers?
The person complaining of missing their stop should (try to) walk back or shut up, ffs. And be thankful
And you'd be exposed to deadly bacteria. E coli and hepatitis in particular.

hahaha that's my subway station... and this is NOT The first time that this has happened. The weird thing is that this subway station is at the top of a hill - not the bottom.
Maybe, but I'm concerned for all these people beyond just the immediate danger of the flooding. The problem is, a lot of rental properties just became unlivable for the medium term so where's everyone that rented them going to go? If you own, your insurance covers you while the place is being repaired. Do renters have that protection in NYC?
Load More Replies...Im not from USA so I ask: you never have tornados in that part of the country or its rare?
It used to be very rare but scarily, it's becoming more common over the last few years. I'm in south eastern Pennsylvania, and we've had three tornado emergencies within the last couple of months. It's insane and scary. We don't have a basement so my husband and our two little boys were holed up in a downstairs (small but walk-in) closet.
Load More Replies...Have a friend who lives on Cape Cod. On the day this was happening in NYC, she and her husband had to shelter in the basement of their home 5 different times during the day because of tornado warnings. Just warnings, tornado never happened.
When the East Coast starts getting tornados, it might be time to rethink our consumer choices that are causing climate change.
"I am still in disbelief!!!! I am totally exhausted with this clean up!"
We had to have a special company come in to help move things, throw damaged things out, clean, sanitize, then remove parts of some walls, steam the support beams, and appliances. Cost a pretty penny.
Wait until you have to clean the mold and mildew. Boy, oh boy, I hope people use common sense for this dangerous chore.
It is. People died in their cars during the flood. And in buildings. If you want details: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/02/nyregion/nyc-flooding-deaths.html

Yes. Natural weather occurrences are mismanagement.

It could have been ordered before the heavy rain came. Trust me, when it ehavy rains it raise water very fast. Like when it starts up on the mountains here first you will see the rivesr raise fast with 30 minutes.

For some reason, I read this as "Cats are floating..." until I saw a lack of cats.
Almost all of Manhattan's electric main is underground, in tunnels. Water plus electricity makes pretty sparks!
You can see the bottom of the door just gives away and all that water comes flooding in.
So dam sad, for the people and the poor stray animals, I will be praying for you all.
"Basement car park, still working on it. No elevators. Building across from us. We got lucky our building does not have a basement."
Hey there fossil fuel burning nation, how’s about you vote for long term environmental policies instead of only looking until the next change of President? How about you push your senators to drop their funding from oil, gas and big business partners? Perhaps look further than your own economic wealth and invest in businesses that promote a system that will benefit the world as a whole? I have a huge amount of sympathy for the individuals who have had their lives wrecked but it’s time the whole nation took responsibility for a better approach to its impact on the global environment.
Can we also talk about getting the tornado warnings that told us to seek shelter in the basement while simultaneously getting flash flood warnings telling us to get to higher ground?
This was the worst rainfall in NYC history, worse than Sandy though with lower winds. Our infrastructure is designed to handle normal loads, but we got more rain in 12 hours than any entire month of September on record. We are in the middle of a $12 billion upgrade to the subways to ensure better handling of water, only 2 years left on a 10 year project to finish. Also we are redoing over 30 neighborhoods for flood issues. My area was finished 2 years ago, and over 50 other neighborhoods have been finished. We know 4 of the 5 boroughs are on Islands, most of NYC is former swamp land, and we are at high risk of flooding. That is why we have spent billions since Sandy on fixing the problem.
My basement flooded :( I lost some stuff from my childhood because I didn’t realize it would flood that much yeah I know it’s my fault but still sad
Don't worry guys, climate change is still totally a hoax! There's no flooding and it's all a conspiracy by bill Gates to put tracking chips in our shins. Yup. No other explanation.
For all living at an American coast line, please consider packing up and relocating your families deeper into the continent. The scientific society has predicted major sea level rising in the nearest future due to all the ice melting into the oceans. It is painful to watch all these people suffer from natural disasters so do your best to avoid being one of the victims. NY will be under the water, California will be under the water. At this point this is a matter of time and no amount of recycled straws will stop it. Act now so we won't see photos of you and your family in the next post. Stay safe, people. We are all in this together, yet alone. Take care of yourself and the people depending on you.
woaww, very impressive, but I don't understand why there are still so many vehicles on the roads and people in the subway? Was it so sudden to take everyone by surprise? Anyway... good luck to the New Yorkers...
