My Kids And I Spent A Year Painting Over 1,000 Rocks And Hid Them For People To Spot And Photograph
A few months ago I shared some of the Family Friendly Street Art my kids and I make – painting rocks or sticks or leaves and hiding them around town to bring a smile to passers-by. This year we decided to massively expand the idea and take it to Grand Rapids MI during the world’s largest ArtPrize.
In the past, my three oldest kids and I would paint around 40 objects to hide in town. But this time around, all six of my kids and I spent a year painting over 1,000 rocks! We painted all of them in matching pairs. Half of them are gathered together for display at the Children’s Museum so visitors can grasp the scope of it all. The other matching half are tucked around town in random places for families to spot and photograph. It’s like a giant game of I-Spy… or a real-life version of Pokemon GO!

Share on FacebookI love this idea, even without the attached art project/exhibit, I think it could make people smile to find something colorful like this where they don't expect it :)
I love this project! I love rocks, which is one reason, but this wonderful family activity is providing happiness and joy not only to the seven creators, but to everyone who sees them, either en masse or one rock at a time. Bravo and Brava to all! This post kept me smiling all the way.
Brilliant! Maybe I'll try doing this with my kids, they love painting and they love collecting small stones, rocks, minerals, so it sound like exactly for them :-)
Aewsome family, aewsome urban art, aewsome video song. You guys rock!!! Hugs from Rio!
These are so beautifully and creatively painted! I particularly love the large blue grinning one in the last photo. It somewhat reminds me of the Cheshire Cat :D
lovely and moving on many levels!! thanks for sharing--wish i lived in your town!!!
Oh, neat! I saw the ones displayed yesterday; I'll have to tell my friend that lives in Grand Rapids to look around for the hidden ones!
Wonderful, inspiring. In other words these were all great. Loved the painted rocks for sure.
What a fabulous idea, every town should do this and all the schools should get involved. I know that the children in my Daycare will be painting rocks this Autumn:~)
Such a truly WONDERFUL idea!! As a parent with 3 of my own children & 2 of my fiance's, (soon to be my own as well!!) ranging in age from almost 17 years old down to 5 years old, it's tough coming up with ideas that everyone will enjoy TOGETHER... I've GOTTA say tho, what a GREAT idea for EVERYONE!! Doesn't even have to be on a huge scale, yet I see it being fun for ALL of us. 😊
Kudos!! This is fantastic and I really want to try something like this on a much smaller scale where I live :)
Great idea! And I love that these are something that belong in nature anyway.
I want to try this. But what kind of paint do I buy and what kind of brushes to paint on rocks? I would like them for the garden .
Cool! 10 years ago I found blue rocks in Crested Butte, Colorado that a local had painted blue and hide around town for people to find....I still have the rocks I found in a wood bowl on my coffee table😊
You rock guys! But I must say that the drawing style seemes very grown up,small children don't draw that way.Do they do the base color only?
Love the idea! But not sure those are the work of children, they seem too neat and each so different. Maybe Dad did more than the video implies.
What kind of paint did you use? Do you have trouble with people taking the rocks?
