“That’s Just The Absolute Laziest”: Internet Reacts To This Mom Putting Son To Bed With Uniform

Rachel Griffin-Accurso, better known as Ms. Rachel, is a passionate educator who creates videos to help toddlers and their families learn and bond.

Rachel has two master’s degrees in education, with one of them being in early childhood development and the other in music education, and her clips often infuse songs, games, and nursery rhymes with strategies from experts to help children reach important milestones in the crucial early years of learning.

Her dedicated work has earned Rachel millions of followers and billions of views across various social media platforms, but one of her recent uploads has caused a bit of a stir.

People generally agree that you should sleep with your clothes on

When Sleepopolis surveyed 300 Americans regarding their thoughts on the topic, a solid majority (64.7 percent of respondents) said they did have some opposition to wearing street or “outside” clothes to bed.

When asked how often they change out of street clothes before getting into bed, 43.3 percent said “always,” followed by 30.3 percent who said “most of the time,” while the lowest share of respondents said “never” — only 9 percent.

When asked how likely they are to change out of street clothes to lay down for a nap or to rest, 42.7 percent of respondents said “very likely” and 21.3 percent said “likely.”

Finally, when asked how strongly respondents agreed with the statement “Clothes worn outside the house are too dirty to wear in my bed,” 28 percent of respondents said they “strongly agree,” while 21.3 percent said they “agree,” and another 23 percent said they “somewhat agree,” while 22 percent said they “disagree.”

So even though there is some variation within the results, the overall trend suggests that many Americans tend to change out of their outside clothes before getting into bed, or at least believe that we should.

But there’s nothing inherently wrong with it

A lot of those who objected to Ms. Rachel’s practice cited hygiene as a concerning factor. But the truth is that while clothes can pick up and spread germs, in most cases, the risk they present is very low.

“The main reason not to sleep in outside clothes is discomfort,” Robert Philip Lindeman, MD, Ph.D. said. “I know of no particular infectious risk of doing this.”

According to him, there is not much concern about bacteria or viruses from clothes that have been outside.

Sean Marchese, MS, RN from The Mesothelioma Center, agrees.

“For highly contagious diseases, such as the flu or COVID-19, the infection occurs when someone carrying”, Marchese added. “It can also transfer via droplets on surfaces you touch, but these droplets are likely to dry or evaporate from your clothes by the time you get home.”

Additionally, most healthy people’s immune systems are strong enough to ward off any potential harm from bacteria or pathogens that may have lodged onto their clothes while out of the house.

So if Ms. Rachel believes that, right now, putting her son to sleep with his clothes on is the best solution, we can disagree with her, but we certainly can’t blame her for it. Sounds like it all boils down to parental preferences.

As her video went viral, Ms. Rachel added an explanation to answer the common questions

Many people thought this was a good idea

But a considerable amount disagreed with her approach

Thank you! A lot of people have criticised me for the fact that I never clean my children’s backsides after they go to the bathroom - but like you say, just because it’s unhygienic, it works for me. I’m doing my best and that’s OK! Not everything needs to be divisive. /sarcasm/

I don't see an issue with this, its just clothes. Is the child healthy? fed? safe? If the answer to all those things is yes, then its all good. There are so many other things in the world that people could be upset about.

That kid is going to school in sweaty, dirty and rumpled clothes and has to sleep in clothes that aren't meant to be slept in, i.e. are too hot and have hard seams/buttons/zips that are uncomfortable to fall asleep in.

My first instinct is to say that it's bad and stupid, everything about me screams 'NO' at this. But is it actually bad, or does it just feel bad because it's the opposite of what we happen to be used to? There are negatives about it, like sweating or the clothes being too uncomfortable/warm for in bed, but if she already checked that those are not the case in their situation, and the experts say it's not unhygienic, is there actually a problem? Isn't it just me wanting to stick to what we're used to because it feels like that should be better because it's more familiar?

Wow, y’all really have some opinions on a child sleeping in clean clothes. I had never heard of this until a mom of one of my PreK students said she did it, but only with one child because she struggled so much in the mornings. My younger son actually started doing this for himself at night, he wears athletic clothes so they’re cooler than pajamas and don’t have buttons or zippers and don’t wrinkle. He likes being able to wake up in the morning and being ready to go. I never suggested it to him.

Hell, I’m 41 and I lay out my clothes for the next day the night before, because I am extremely NOT a morning person, and if those clothes are ready and waiting, my sanity remains intact. I’d SLEEP in my next-day clothes if I could, but I occasionally drool in my sleep and I’d hate to drool on my day shirt XD

Some parents have some really rough periods of times to go through, where one or even both of them are on the edge of a burn out. So they might have legitimate reasons to not be able to take on an extra tasks right now.

Body lice grow/thrive in warm, moist environments. Their life cycle is broken not only when we wash ourselves regularly, but when we change from day to night clothing and our body temperature drops. I.e. there is absolutely a scientific reason for changing from outside clothes to night clothes and back again. I recommend the book Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China which includes a very personal account of how remaining in the same clothes led to a proliferation of body lice. (My knowledge is scientific; the book is simply a good example.)

I used to do this when my kids were little because it's not that you're being lazy but if you have one kid going to school one kid going to daycare and you have to go to work if you dress the one for daycare the night before you only have one child to get dressed and yourself. It's just silly to attack someone over how they parent.

Kids are kids and have different preferences. My middle likes to wear her uniform to bed so she can get to the bathroom before her siblings. My oldest likes to do overnight oates so he doesn't fight over the toaster for breakfast. My youngest puts her bag on the porch before bed so she doesn't forget it. As long as the kids are happy and healthy what does it hurt?

I did this when I was in middle school just so I could sleep in for a couple of minutes. My older sisters told me I'm going to get my cloth all wrinkled but I said cloth gets wrinkled anyway, who can tell? Now 30 years later, I finally get what my sister was saying: yes, clothes do get wrinkled but wrinkles from daily wear are very different from wrinkles from a night of rolling around. I looked like a shag back then and I couldn't tell.

My little brother used to do this to himself when he got old enough to be in charge of his dressing routine. He'd sleep in jeans and everything. Would probably wear his shoes to bed and everything if we'd let him get away with it. It was weird, but at least he was choosing to do it. I don't think it's a good habit to train a younger child into, and I'm not a huge fan of encouraging the sweatpants everywhere everyday lifestyle this implies either.
