Son Tips $10 After Eating For $104, His Mom Is Furious And Sends Him Back

Interview With Author

Recently, an entrepreneur and mom named Danielle Foster went viral on TikTok after sharing a video bite from her daily life.

In a video that has amassed a whopping 2 million views already, Foster shows how upset she got over her teen son’s tip at a restaurant. Captioned “I raised him better,” the video is basically Foster’s quick life lesson to her son about the importance of not just tipping, but tipping the right amount.

Let’s see what point exactly Foster made, and be sure to share if you agree with her in the comment section!

An entrepreneur mom went viral on TikTok for teaching her teenage son the importance of tipping, not in theory but in practice

After learning how much her son left for a tip, Danielle decided to teach him a lesson

Mom: Johnny, you need to go get my wallet. You need to go get my Visa card, you need to go to the ATM, and you need to grab a 20 and drive your a** back to that restaurant because on a $104 check, $10 is a s**tty tip. Do you understand me? Go now! I’m not asking, I’m telling. It’s not funny. Do you know that guy might have kids? Do you know that $104 gets taxed on it? You’re going to go grab my credit card, get $20, and drive it back there.
Johnny: Yes, ma’am.
Mom: Johnny, I want to see you hand it to him. I want to see you walk in. I’ll be muted, but you don’t know how to tip.”

Danielle uploaded the video to her TikTok channel and it amassed 2M views

She later shared this update on the situation

“My son did go back to the restaurant, and he definitely did tip him the $20. So he gave him $30 on $104. Him paying for that check was money that he saved. And I call this his first date because it was the first time he drove because he just got his license, but it was his and his girlfriend’s one-year anniversary dinner. He had come home and told me how great of service he had. So I’m like, how much did you tip? And he’s like, $10. And I’m like, $10 on $104. And he said, “Well, Mom, I had that gift card for $50.” He didn’t think he had to tip on the gift card.”

Danielle also explained why she was ‘yelling’ at her son after some people pointed it out

“My kid has all A’s and B’s. He’s a great student. He’s home every single weekend. He’s not out partying, and I don’t have any issues like that. His smirk is because he’s an awkward 16-year-old, but not because I’m yelling because I’m from Jersey and I’m Italian and I yell like this all the time. This is how I talk. Me talking like this right now is kind of, like, quiet and my kid’s probably like, something’s wrong with her. I’m just a loud individual. We’re also extremely close. So at first, he was like, kind of confused and like, Mom, are you being serious, and he knew I was being serious when I told him he had to FaceTime me, which he did. And you know, I’m proud of him. He went back, he probably had to swallow his pride doing that. But he did it. And for people saying that servers don’t work hard, I reminded my son that when I was a single mom before I married my husband of almost 11 years now, I was a server in two different restaurants and worked another job to support us.”

And she addressed some negative comments too

“So thank you to all the servers out there. Make sure you teach your kids and remind them when they go out on their first date how to tip. So yeah, I feel bad that I videotaped it. I did apologize to him this morning. And I told him to stay off the comments because people were saying stuff that was negative towards me and him and I was like, “Hey, listen, we know our relationship. We know you’re a good kid.” You know, I was just… I don’t know why I videotaped it. And I’m sorry. I feel bad that people said bad stuff about my kid when he’s such a good kid. But here I was just trying to give parents the other tip that even if you do talk to your kids about things, they don’t 100% understand. Like, my son didn’t realize that a gift card doesn’t mean that you don’t tip on top of it. Well, this is my explanation. He’s a good kid. I do the best in my parenting that I possibly can. And then if you don’t want to tip, don’t go out to eat. That’s really all I gotta say. Thanks.”

“My oldest son and I started doing TikToks together because we are close and it is fun!”

Bored Panda contacted Danielle Foster to find out more about her and this viral video. “I am a business owner of a virtual company that employs military spouses & veterans and also stay-at-home parents. My husband is active duty in the Navy and currently deployed, so TikTok has kept me busy,” Foster told us.

Her company currently employs over 50+ people and they help small to enterprise businesses with lead generation, appointment setting, answering service, virtual assistance, and more.

Foster also said that her “oldest son and I started doing TikToks together because we are close and it is fun!”

Foster’s friend said she should put the video on her TikTok, thinking it was hilarious, so she did it

We asked if Foster ever saw her video going as viral as it did and she said not at all. “I actually am completely shocked. My son came home from the date, and so I didn’t think any of our friends and family would believe me when he told me what he tipped. So I started videotaping it so I had proof. I sent it to my team on Slack, then my family,” Foster recounted.

Then, one of her friends suggested putting that video on Tiktok. Since the friend thought “it’s hilarious and maybe people will learn how to tip…” Foster did it!

“I need to make sure that I continue showing him everything I think is correct in the world,” mom says

Foster told us that the main message of her video is as follows: “I was a single mom, I have family who currently are in the serving business and people forget in the states, tipping is how they make their money. My son is 16, almost 18, and will be going into the world by himself. I need to make sure that I continue showing him everything I think is correct in the world.”

Moreover, the entrepreneur mom said that she believes in tipping and tipping well. “Especially when you have great service. How others raise their kids is on them. My parents raised me to treat the janitor the same as you would treat the President. Servers work hard, they deserve to get them tips,” Foster explained.

“I really just love TikTok and find it fun. We old people are always taking it over,” Foster laughs

We also asked if Foster has any future plans for her TikTok and she assured us that she’ll continue to post her videos of parenting and having fun with her kids. “My husband will come home, so I do post a lot of military stuff. Most of my stuff is about my company and towards the stay-at-home parent or military spouse/first responder spouse community.”

She concluded by saying that “I really just love TikTok and find it fun. We old people are always taking it over,” Foster laughed. So make sure to keep your eye on Foster’s TikTok for a lot more fun content!

If you want to do good then do it in silence. Stop trying to announce when you're doing a good deed. This just sounds like she's trying to show how she's a good mom and get validation and views for it. And also by publicly embarrassing her son on social media. Just teach him in silence and be done with it. Getting tired of all these people trying to show off how good of a person/parent they are. I'm all about doing good deeds and all that stuff but cone on...we know how out of hand these social media people are getting.

It's insane. Many countries don't have tipping culture at all. It shouldn't even exist! Suprised grocery stores and pharmacies haven't "put out a jar." And the RAGE people have when they don't feel tip was adequate shouldn't be at the customers it should be directed to the employer who's actually to blame when they can't make rent.

It's really astonishing how much people will depend tipping culture instead of paying workers a fair wage. Tips should be for especially good service, that's how we handle it in Europe, and not a mandatory so the waiters don't go hungry.

Tbh, 10$ tip for 100$ order seems fair to me, it's 10%. That's what I would tip for good service, as an extra for the waiter. I hope the boy just walks a round the block a few times, this mom is more after internet points than actually doing something good.

This mom is over the top. So the kid didn't exactly tip the right amount...use it as a learning experience. Discuss tipping etiquette. Instead she yells, acts like this is an emergency, demands that the kid go back a d THEN broadcasts it to the world. Holy shoot, what is wrong with people? Why do they do this?? What makes this situation so special?? Arg.

The American service industry is the problem here. In every other country on the planet tipping is either frowned upon or a reward for top tier service, not an expectation. America, pay your workers more!

In a restaurant the what an employee earns is the responsibility of the employer. The customer should not be forced to tip just because the employer is a cheap a*s***e.

Two people at a table. They get separate checks. Person "A" orders Filet Mignon and a beer. Check is $100 Person "B" orders a cheesburger and a glass of water. Check is $40 The server exuded the same effort bringing out two plates and two beverages. Why does Person "A" have to tip more than twice as much as Person "B"? Also, the server is the restaurant's employee, not Person "A" or "B"'s employee, but that's the problem with tipping culture.... It allows them to pay their employees c**p, and make the customers pay their salary.

I love how people s**t on tipping culture in America. It isn't going away, so tip well so your servers can survive. My dad was the world's worst tipper and I remember one time he was going to tip the server, a friend of mine, $20 on a $400 meal for 8 people. I went back in the restaurant and gave her the rest of the tip. I didn't embarrass him though and I don't agree with the mom publicly shaming her kid.

The percentage matters because servers also have to contribute a % to a tip pool that goes to kitchen staff, bartenders, etc. The last place I served at the "tip out" was 4% of my total sales. So if a table tips less than 4% of the total, I would literally have to pay out of my own pocket to cover the tip out. If the restaurant he went to had the same tip out (it's usually 3-4%), of his $10 tip, less than $6 actually goes into the server's pocket. On top of that, until quite recently where I am (and still in many other areas) the minimum wage is lower for servers than for other types of employment, because the government--not just the restaurant--expects them to make a large percentage of their income in tips. I believe in some states the server's wage is less than $4/hr. It's messed up, it's not fair to either server or customers, but honestly the government would be where to go to petition for change. Don't take it out on the server.

I find it amazing that he can go on a date and spend over $100 without having to worry. While I agree that tipping is important, the mother shouldn't have shamed him like that. I remember being a teenager and having to get a meal and worry about the tip as well. It's a shame that the food industry doesn't pay its servers a livable wage and we have to provide a tip, it's mandatory now when before it was provided for amazing service.

Wow, your son should be yelling at you for prioritizing internet points over him. Also stop encouraging higher tipping, lol, try to encourage restaurant owners to pay a living wage. According to Google, the average restaurant owner as of 2023 makes $97,157 USD a year in reported salary, not earnings of the business, just what they pay themselves for normal-human-taxes appearance... For the most part, you're tipping to keep the absurd system in place for a business owner to drive a Mercedes AMG instead of a decent Lexus...

I've got an answer....Maybe the American government could set minimum wage at a liveable level. People should not have to makeup their wages through tips, it's absurd. Here in Australia our minimum wage is $812.60 per week, for a 38 hour week, or $21.38 per hour. Still low but liveable. We tip for exemplary service in a restaurant ,usually not in cafes .We never tip at fast food outlets or in other shops....Because people are properly paid to do their jobs.

It's horrible, especially "family blogs" child actors have laws that protect them and limit hours on camera and prioritize school and appropriate financial compensation with a percentage in trust parents cannot access, but kids forced to perform for their parent's channels work 24/7 unpaid and not allowed to refuse. Their most embarrassing and uncomfortable moments are dollars in the bank for greedy parents.

30$ tip?? For a 2 person meal? I would have to work 3 hours myself after tax just to pay that tip, not even the meal. Server spends 10 minutes on me and I pay her 18 times what I would earn for that 10 minutes of work? Maybe if I got paid 180$ an hour... 10$ for 10 minutes of work seems generous. And who, without permission, goes online to claim their child goes around supposedly stiffing a poor struggling waitress and isn't she a f*cking hero for setting him straight? She expected lots of praise for herself at her son's expense..so who's actually insensitive and selfish?

I get it that servers should be paid a livable wage, but low/no tip is not sending a message to the owner of the restaurant, it's just punishing the staff. Also, what about the cook, dishwasher and everyone else behind the scene? They are also involved in the food prep, etc., they rarely participate in tipping culture.

I have many friends and family in the bar/restaurant industry. Almost every single one of them says they would lose money if they got paid $20 an hour (which definitely should be the minimum wage), and no tips. I know-tipping culture bad, America bad. The people in the industry don’t complain about it. And you are aware that when tipping culture goes away, and the owners have to pay the servers $20, they will just raise the price of the meal. You will either pay $40 with a $10 tip, or $50 and no tip. It’s all the same

There are... A lot of douches in the comments. Yes, tipping culture is out of control. Yes, the food service industry is exploiting workers and consumers. But here's the thing: you chose to participate. Your server is taxed on the total of their sales. You choosing to make a socio-economic stand will come at the expense of your server, not force the restaurant to make a change. If you don't get that, stay home, or get your dinner out of a window.

Learned a long time ago that if you tip well, you get remembered, and when you go back, you get excellent service. Seems it’s on us generous tippers to make up for the s****y tippers and the a******s who monopolize on the server’s time then stiff them by leaving no tip at all. (And don’t start in on the “people shouldn’t have to work for tips” stuff. I actually agree that servers should be paid a decent, liveable salary. But right at this moment they’re not, and they rely on tips to pay their rent and bills, so don’t be an a*****e and hurt the server by leaving no tip just to make a point.)

Tip minimum 20% to servers or don't go out. Don't use a lame excuse about how there "shouldn't" be a tipping culture". The facts are the facts. It is what it it. In America THERE IS A TIPPING CULTURE. Don't concern yourself with your garbage thoughts on why you are justified to steal the servers WELL DESERVED tip because that's cheap. Tip or leave America

He tipped 10%. It isn't a bad tip just not a great one. Shaming him on the internet though is a cizunt move.

In other countries you pay more for your meal. You’re not paying anymore overall in the US

If she had a problem with it she should have covered it herself. He tipped 10%, which is entirely acceptable if he doesn't have an income. This seems like an internet trap.

It would go away if people would just stop doing it... but americans are more concerned about women's uteruses and the ability to keep on shooting down school children....

Aah, the tipping culture in the USA. In Australia, I only ever tip if the service is exceptional. USA, you need to raise your minimum wage.

Americas tipping culture is out of hand. It is waitress job to bring me my food and it is my decision if I want leave some tip. Employer should add this % to food and drinks. If I don't want to tip can I go to kichen ang behind the bat to get my food and drinks

I’m not super informed on tipping, but I feel like the mom overreacted a bit. Sure perhaps he didn’t tip enough but she shouldn’t have shamed him in the internet and yelled at him. It could’ve been discussed calmly and quietly.

Parenting fail here, big time!! First off for letting your kid spend that much on food and second for making tipping mandatory. Teach your son how to eat at fast food places or places like Chili's or Applebee's.

Bored Panda is filled with people trashing people from the United States not understanding their culture yet Bored Panda is also filled with people not from the United States that are very animate about how they won't tip when traveling to the United States because that's not how their culture works. I read these comments over and over again when the subject of tipping in the United States is brought up.

Gift card or coupon is free to you money. You should use part of that to tip. We regularly get coupons for a place we really like. I use the coupon and tip on the full amount plus half the coupon amount.
