“Modern problems require modern solutions.” Those are the words of American stand-up comedian Dave Chappelle. Though he said the phrase in a skit during an episode of Chappelle’s Show, jokingly advocating for the use of fake Canadian ID cards for free healthcare, people are using this format to post about real-life problems that need creative solutions. Some of these jokes are hilariously on-point while others tell us all about the sad state of society.

There are a lot of problems in the 21st century. From life on the streets being worse than life in prison to the invasion of privacy via facial recognition technology, and much, much more. Bored Panda has collected some of the saddest and funniest 'modern problem' posts that make you think, so scroll down, have a look, and let us know what modern problems you personally think are the biggest, dear Pandas. Remember to upvote the stories that left the biggest impact on you and read on for Bored Panda's interview with redditor Imthatguy25 who is very proud that they created the joke format in the first place.

No it isn't a shame. Its ok if a girl wears a hijab, she's not harming anyone and it's her own choice. What is a shame is banning someone from playing in a team for wearing hijab.

As a trans muslim person, I can say there is nothing wring with wearing a hijab in and of itself. But no one should ever be forced to wear one. It is a choice to wear one or not.

Redditor Imthatguy25 told us all about what inspired them to create the 'modern problems' meme. "I've watched Chappelle's Show since I was a kid so the 'modern problems’ quote has always been something I'd regularly quote to myself or to some others. I basically treated it like it was a motto,” they said.

“But even then, I honestly didn't expect the format to pick up much traction. Until I saw a bunch of other redditors hit the homepage from using the format and making their own.”

Imthatguy25 has some ideas about why the ‘modern problems’ joke format gained so much popularity so quickly. “Other than the obvious ‘Dave Chappelle is a comedic genius and everything he says is meme gold,’ redditors can be pretty clever when they see a meme that they believe has potential,” they explained.

If people have something to do while waiting they complain less. One of our clients had their offices in the top most floor of a high rise building and employees started to complain about the time they had to wait for the elevators. Then they installed lots of man-sized mirrors around the waiting area and complaining stopped.

In America, hospitals have to treat you if you are brought in an ambulance. So people without insurance call an EMS unit so they can get basic healthcare. Ambulances are expensive but EMS cannot NOT answer a call. This is one reason why healthcare.Ambulance costs are so high and the wait for an ambulance can take so long.

420 is a weed reference. While the origins of the number are disputed, kids in the USA associate 420 with weed, and a lot of kids bunk off school on 4/20 (20/4) with the idea of smoking weed. Most of them, it's more of an idea than an actual action!

“The meme alone was a pretty cut and dry, simple to understand. But like I've said, redditors have their own vernacular way with memes. I've seen this dude rage war with Instagram using my format and managed 100k upvotes out of it. I honestly owe it to Reddit and Instagram for making the meme so shareable,” the redditor shared.

According to Imthatguy25, they don’t have any problem with others using the ‘modern problems’ format for social or political commentary, however—they have to be funny.

So I wore 5 shirts and two sweaters. I have done this too. After a five-hour train ride in a heatwave, wearing the very lightest of summer clothing, I was told at the gate that the combined weight of my suitcase and the carry on plus my handbag was above the limit and that I would have to pay X outrageous amount. They would also not allow me to carry both the carry-on and the handbag. The handbag would have to be placed in the carry-on. There was very little time left and instead of changing clothes after the passport control (which I told them was my plan), I got changed right there in front of the check-in counter! Jeans, socks, boots, a sweater, a cardigan, and a jacket plus an overcoat on my arm and the pockets stuffed full. Ha!

The ‘modern problems’ meme first popped up in December 2018. Redditor Imthatguy25 posted some dark humor and attached Chappelle’s photo with the catchphrase alongside it. The meme spread.

Since then, other people have been changing the purpose of the meme to suit their needs. While some are going for pure comedy, others are taking things a bit more seriously, using the format for social commentary and to show how dystopian some parts of our society have become.

In both cases, the meme tends to talk about current topics. So when it first showed up, you could see a lot of talks about Thanos, Fortnite, and Article 13. How things have changed since then!

The reason for weight limits on luggage is because OSHA regulations state that a single person is not to lift more than 50 pounds, so baggage handlers don't break their backs lifting our luggage. You pay more for heavy bags because baggage handlers have to use the buddy system to lift them. It's not about how much weight goes on the plane, because then they would weigh every passenger too.

    Nomadus Aureus
    Community Member

Too many baggage is absolutely a thing. We had it happen when an excess of 500Kg was on our small aircraft and half the hold had to be emptied. Fuel usage will differ as well, obviously and they can't just top their tanks up either just because people can't grasp the concept of weight limit.

I don't get how that would make a difference. You would just be moving the weight to the front of the bag so it would still weigh the same. Isn't the scale the whole pad?

I learned to just fess up when I was in a tight spot with my luggage. A lot of check-in staff waived the excess baggage fee purely because I wasn’t being a Karen about it.

This is actually stupid and dangerous, putting the entire flight at risk. They weigh bags to know just how much weight is going onto the plane. If the plane is overloaded, guess what's going to happen when you try to take off?

yes! this! there was a tragic accident where the whole crew and all passengers died because of that. and the pilot fought so hard not only to save them, and when she knew she couldn't - to try not to kill people on the ground as well...

According to the United Nations Foundation’s post in January, some of the main issues to look out for in 2020 included the acceleration of climate change, the continued presence of inequality and exclusion, as well as the humanitarian crises in Syria, Yemen, Venezuela, and elsewhere.

What we got this year was pretty much on-point with the UN’s prediction. The bushfires that ravaged Australia were linked to climate change. The Covid-19 pandemic and rising unemployment showed the stark differences between the haves and the have-nots. While the humanitarian problems abroad haven’t gone away. So, yes, modern problems do require modern solutions. Permanent ones—not just temporary band-aids.

In some Asian countries, it is an old practice to burn the stalks and weeds in the farm once the crop is harvested to take care of the waste, weeds and bugs and to turn it into fertilizer. It is better than pesticides but can cause a lot of pollution.

The added nutrients come from the act of burning itself. The ash from a fire is incredibly rich in phosphorus, nitrogen, and even minerals like calcium. Fire takes all of the nutrients from the dead plant material above ground and converts them back to elementary forms. This helps the nee plants grow much better.

It's banned in some countries - kills the good in the soil as well as the bad. In india stubble burning produces a cloud of particulates visible from space and has produced what has been described as a "toxic cloud" in New Delhi, resulting in declarations of an air-pollution emergency.

Trump is the biggest idiot ever I hope someone else who is a bit smarter becomes president of America (no offence Americans) because I am sick of hearing Trumps voice on the news in Australia!

And now her dear old dad wants to postpone the election. Legally, they need to have a new president at the determined due date. And I thought this year could not get worse... Well, let's hope Karma exists and is coming for a reckoning.

Even if it exists that's not how it works - consequences are in the next life.

Don't want to be homeless? Buy a house. I see the daughter really is a child of her father, No DNA testing required. Even though the father would "gladly do her" as he said.

Hes unreal. Totally unreal. My husband met my daughter at 6. I knew him for 3 years prior. Shes now 14. And beautiful..and my hubby is too. I have never ever seen anything but protective daddy. He prefers older woman cuz he can't see himself with "a child". Right!? That's a child to him! His flesh and blood and he looks at her like a piece of meat too. She is a meat head...but anywayz

Too bad that there aren’t enough jobs for everyone to work. In Australia (just before Covid-19) there was approx 500,000 unemployed people and only 200,000 jobs available. Now with Covid the unemployment rate is even higher and is just getting worse. So yeah telling someone to just get a job like it is easy is just ridiculous.

AlphaPuck Pretty much everywhere worldwide have the same issues with unemployment and lack of jobs, not just Australia. And superpower, pfft at least we aren’t crashing and burning like the US has been of late. US is the laughing stock of the world.

A few months ago, Emmanuel Macron, the president of France was discussing with a young man who told him he could find a job in horticulture (for which he studied) despite being registered in the employment agency and sending his CV to everybody who could have a job for him including in public service. Macron answered something like "You can work in a café or an hotel. Just cross the street and you will find a job."

Is the cafe or hotel hiring, or have they cut back due to loss of business to Covid? Politicians are so out of touch

"Why don't you all just ask daddy for a six figure+ desk job that requires no actual work?" -Ivanka Trump

Doesn't she have one already? She certainly hangs around Daddy enough. She is as sociopathic as he is; not even a single molecule of empathy exists in any Trump body, except Mary Trump and her father who died already. (I might have, too, to escape that revolting crew.) Ivanka is Daddy's little feel-good girl; he feels her all over and that makes him feel good. Which he's been doing since she was about 10 years old. Look at the old pictures if you don't believe me. He's been at least groping her since she was barely pubescent. And he accuses Democrats of being pedophiles?
