When you've used old playing cards for a while, brand new cards feel super slippery; like, the cards would slip and spin when I placed them on top of another card while playing solitaire. I "fixed" it by playing a bunch of rounds on a rough concrete step; it scuffed the cards up just enough that they'd stay where I put them.

This reminds me of when I was a young teenager and my parents asked me to count about 5 pounds worth of pennies. Beforehand, I'd briefly put a coin between my lips to hold it (like if it was my bus fare, but I needed both hands to get something out of my bag). But after counting those coins, my hands were GROSS, like my fingertips were *black*. It's been almost 40 years since that day, and I haven't put a coin anywhere near my mouth since.

My husband does fencing as one part of our business. 25 - 30 years ago we could concrete a 4"x4" wooden post in and it would last. In fact we had one that we visited again to do more work about 20 years after instillation. A few years back we installed some at home and 3 years later some had rotted through. Apparently the timber growers prefer faster growing trees. But the tradesmen and customers certainly don't!

The difference comes from them being two different varieties of tomato. Subject to the same conditions as the shop tomato, grandma's tomato could have quite possibly not grown at all, and will be a puddle of goo when arriving at a processing facility or shop. Shop tomatoes are bred for their tougher skin that can survive intact in vehicle tranport, and their hardiness for a multitude of temperatures and soil qualities.
