Serpentine walls use fewer brick than straight walls. The strength of these walls come from the wave shape whereas straight brick walls to have the same strength, must be 2 bricks thick. A serpentine wall was built at a small college in my home town and it was such an interesting thing to happen we learned all about the history and functionality in my class that year.
