How a person treats an animal tells you everything you need to know about their character. It is just who they are when they think nobody important is watching. And you can pretty confidently trust that an animal interaction speaks more about someone’s character than the words from their mouth ever will.
One mother-in-law had spent eight years demanding grandchildren, developed a specific grudge against the family dog for reasons that defy logic, and on her way out the door after being told the conversation was closed forever, she kicked him. Her son threw her jacket into a puddle. The boots went next. She was not invited to put them on first.

The decision not to have children is much more common than mothers-in-law seem to appreciate. A Pew Research Center survey found that around 44% of adults aged 18 to 49 who do not currently have children say they are unlikely ever to have them. No German shepherd can be blamed for those kinds of numbers.
Research also consistently shows that childfree people report higher day-to-day life satisfaction and lower stress than parents, particularly during the years when children are young. More free time, more financial flexibility, more energy for the relationships and pursuits that matter to them. It doesn’t sound like this couple is making such a bad choice, is it?
The pressure that childfree couples face from family members, particularly from mothers-in-law who have decided that grandchildren are an entitlement rather than a gift, is deeply exhausting. Eight years of the same conversation and the same wailing about biological clocks ticking would test the patience of anyone. What it does not justify is what happened in that hallway.
Kicking a dog reveals something specific and dark about a person. An inability to feel or care about the pain of another living creature. A willingness to use physical force against something that cannot fight back or protect itself. An aggression that bypasses reason entirely and goes straight to violence.
Psychologists and animal behavioural experts have no doubts about this correlation, and it has become such a reliable shorthand for villainy that it is a recognised television trope. When a writer wants an audience to instantly despise a character, they have them kick a dog. It works every time because audiences understand instinctively what that action signals about a person’s character.
The husband in this story understood it too, which is why he did not stop to have a conversation about it. The jacket went into the puddle, the boots followed, and the door closed. Eight years of boundary pushing, baby pressure, and pointed comments about the dog ended swiftly.
Senior dogs occupy a particularly tender place in the lives of the people who love them. A fourteen-year-old German Shepherd who has been with his owner since she was a teenager is a living thread connecting her to her own history, a relationship built over years of trust, routine, and unconditional presence. Her mother-in-law could not see that, and only saw a grandbaby-blocking creature.

Let me point out the obvious: If you can hurt an innocent animal then you are capable of hurting an innocent child. With that said, if you hurt my animal, I will show you that demons do exist.

You kick any of my animals, and you will immediately be ejected out the door with my boot buried deep up your a*s. Pets are family members, so kicking OP’s dog is the same as kicking OP’s child. That woman actually raised children of her own! I shudder to think how she treated them if they got in her way—-and she wants grandchildren? W T Actual F? Even if OP did have a baby, that wrinkly old b***h still wouldn’t come anywhere near them. If the dog is still alive, you bet he and his teeth would be all over her to protect that child, because he would remember that kick of hers forever.
