“When will I ever use this?” – we each said this at least once back in high school. And it’s highly probable that you said this in math class. Well, to answer your question from decades ago – today! Today’s trivia features 32 questions – 3 for each grade of primary and middle school and 2 for each high school year. It will start easy but by the end, you might question your choice of not doing your homework back in high school. Just like in school, if you don’t know, you can always guess! With 4 possible answers to each of the questions, your chances of guessing correctly are…? Wait, let’s keep the problems to the actual trivia.

Grab your calculator (yes, you can use it), a piece of paper, and a pencil, and let’s solve some math problems!

I made a couple of silly mistakes trying to do it quickly. The 9 to the power of 150/300 was not clear from the formatting - it looked like an mixed fraction - if I'd been able to read it correctly, I would have got it right. I'm glad they stopped short of differential equations, as I still have nightmares about those!

I also made a mistake on #27 by not reading all the choices. I selected 3 before I noticed +-3 was an option.

#27 and #30 should have the same answer but they don't. I was rushing and got #27 wrong because I selected 3 instead of +-3. But then on #30 they accepted 3 as correct even though it should also be +-3 (which wasn't an option).

I see absolutely no reason to include +/-3 as an answer to #30 because convention says the square root is the positive square root, and the negative square root is the "negative square root". As for #27, x=3 is very definitely a correct solution.

Most of those were quite easy. Except remembering what is sin of 30°, the rest is simple calculation.

sin 30 and cos 60 are both 0.5. sin 60 and cos 30 are root 3 over 2. I once did an entire paper which had questions with those in without a calculator as I had forgotten mine and was too scared to ask to borrow one (my maths teacher was quite strict).

The one about "+/- 3" is bushllit. It is standard practice to ALWAYS assume positive square roots, not "positive or negative".

The only one I struggled with was the derivation one, which I half-guessed, but correctly. Calculus is the only thing in this quiz that I haven't used regularly or at least on and off over the last 40-plus years.. Oh, the common multiples and factors as well, but that's just semantics+arithmetic, the only real issue there is understanding what the question means. The one with the graph just made me laugh, as I didn't used the formula, just looked at the values and used pythagoras.

#9 is obviously wrong unless the original parents died and the 2nd batch are all offspring of the first batch.

I didn't think of that, however a cat dad is unlikely to stick around until birth so it should be +1 cat, the mom. Assuming they're from the same mom.

I got a perfect score (I'm in the maths course ffs) but I'm still hung up on the runners one. I got it right by calculating the time it would take for each runner to complete 1000m and then used some logical thinking based on the options, but i have no idea how to actually calculate that

Question 26 having 140% and 240% as options adds confusion. I would interpret the answer as 240% since the oatmeal is 2.4x more expensive but I guess they were only looking at the difference?

#23 - according to the diagram and the multiple choice answers, the shorter leg of the right-angled triangle is supposed to be longer than 4ft, the length of the longer leg. What?
