Man Freaks Out Over Baby’s Hair Color, Wife Laughs In His Face When Paternity Test Results Come In

When you’re waiting for your child to come into this world, there’s a lot of guessing about what they are going to look like.

But after this Redditor gave birth to a blue-eyed bundle of joy with blonde hair, her husband was shocked: how could this be if both parents were brunettes?

The woman tried to explain that it was just genetics playing a trick on them, but her partner didn’t listen and chose to take a paternity test instead.

The color of our hair is written in our genes

The OP shared that she tried talking some sense into her husband, saying that it was genetics that led to the unexpected color of the baby’s hair. The husband didn’t want to listen, but the Redditor was right: because of our genes that are passed down from generation to generation, children might be born with hair or eye colors the parents didn’t expect.

According to LunaDNA, the color of one’s hair is determined by two types of pigment, eumelanin and pheomelanin; an abundance of the former results in darker, brown or black hair, while the latter colors the hair orange or red. Every person’s hair contains some eumelanin—the darker pigment—low levels of which result in lighter hair, while high levels lead to darker colors.

The fascinating ways our bodies are programmed mean that people with an abundance of tightly packed eumelanin will have black hair, while those with tightly packed pheomelanin will have red hair. (As a matter of fact, the latter is reportedly the rarest hair color in the world, with Ireland and Scotland being the countries where you are most likely to meet individuals with fire-colored hair.) As for blondes, they usually boast a very small and thinly dispersed amount of eumelanin.

Why children don’t always look like their parents

Even though hair color is inherited and passed down through a person’s DNA, certain gene variations can determine that it differs from that of both of the little one’s parents. A child typically receives 46 chromosomes—23 from their mom and 23 from their dad—which determine their looks. However, sometimes parents unknowingly carry an unexpressed hair color gene that they can pass to their child. That’s why sometimes the color of a child’s hair differs not only from their parents’, but from their siblings’, too.

For the OP’s husband, such a lack of resemblance was a cause for concern, to such an extent that he even asked for a paternity test. For one reason or another, millions of people seemingly do so every year, as by 2017 the number of direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic tests exceeded 30 million globally.

In the Redditor’s case, the test results proved that what she was saying was the truth; hence, the “I told you so.” And even though she soon started wondering if she was a jerk for uttering these words, fellow Redditors in the comments made sure to let her know that she wasn’t.

No fooling! And he needed to “recover” upon finding out it was his child, yet AGAIN abandoning wife and baby to run back to his harridan? Holy c**p! Aside from the verbal assaults, lack of trust, being a raging d**k, and having a harpy for a mother, he was apparently too stupid to understand the simple chart with composed of four squares that explained genetics to us in school. If she hasn’t divorced him, I say we form a squad, locate her, and force a divorce to save her from this. (I’ll never forget my Irish friends, a married couple with strawberry blonde hair, blue eyes, and white eyelashes. She was pregnant, he was working in the US and ran back to Ireland for the birth. He reappeared the next day. I feigned interest in the baby and he pulled out a photo … of a very clearly black baby with a LOTTA hair. Didn’t know what to say (maybe they had black grandparents or something?) but I understood when he cried. At least I knew that the grandparents mightta been black!

I've read on here and other places that accusations of infidelity are often a sign that the accuser has been cheating. Certainly a sign that all was not well with this relationship. Anyway, it's a 2-y-o post - what are the chances that they are still together?

I think the comment above that pointed out that there were five weeks during which his mom built up the potential of divorce in his head got him excited about the possibility, and the test rended that moot (in his mind, anyway; I hope to christ it had the opposite affect on her!)

It's about trust--or rather lack of--trust. Your wife says it's your child, you've been living together for X years, and you have a doubt? You're going to hurt her so bad by verbalizing that, that you should be prepared for her to be falling out of love over this. I'm the mother of mixed kids. I can't imagine my man doubting me but let's say our kid had not been looking mixed at all and he looked super anxious over this and obviously looking guilty over this, I MIGHT have suggested it to put his mind to rest. But waltzing there and accusing your wife who just gave birth? Insensitive and destructive.

You dont need any knowledge of genetics to know that many babies are born with light/blond hair and grey/blue eyes and only develop their adult colours in the first year or two. One would expect most mothers and especially grandmothers to know this.

But hotel mama was so much better, and boohoo, his ego was down because he was wrong. A pity she didn't know that she was procreating with a worthless worm.

I can understand the want for a paternity test, unfortunately we do live in a world where people can be devious, cheat, and then pin the baby on their partner so they aren't stuck raising the baby alone. I just don't like how he handled it! He could've asked for a test at the hospital, he could've done it when they got home privately, but he chose to run to his mom for 3 weeks and then get further upset when the truth proved him wrong. If it were me I would've laughed in his face, told him I have what I need for child support, and divorced him. As for his mother I would've let her know that being a grandparent is a privilege and not a right and block her. She can see the baby whenever her son has visitation.

People with brown hair are usually born with brown hair, but it's very common for babies to start with lighter hair (blonde or light brown) that darkens as they grow. So not 'normally' white blond at all. This born 'white blonde' is still a very pale blonde and people who have natural blonde hair as adults are usually born with blonde hair (often very light, nearly white). So you have the wrong hair colour I'm afraid.

I’m guessing her t**d of a husband skipped biology class. Apparently his mother did too.

Putting “Kentucky Fried” in front of *lotsa* adjectives is really popular. (Well, at least in NYC, but I see it a lot online, too, and I assume not everyone using it is a New Yorker.)

Are you divorcing him? And if not why? Dude accused you of cheating left you after you had his kid to run to mommy twice. Why would you stay married to that a*****e?

If my husband's first reaction after me giving birth were accusing me of cheating and demanding a paternity test under threat of divorce he could go live with his parents.

It’s widely known that Caucasian babies frequently, if not most often, are born with light colored eyes and light hair (if they have any). Both eye and hair color frequently darken with age. Do hope OP contacted a lawyer and started divorce proceedings

Yeah! Isn’t she a cruel bytch? Poor man’s coming to terms with having been wrong, and she’s LAUGHING! No wonder he had to abandon her and baby yet AGAIN to go be soothed in his mother’s arms!

I wasblond until I was 5. Now I have brown hair. The same with my brother. I don't know how she can stay with him after 3 weeks of insults...

Both my parents and brother have brown hair and brown eyes. I pop out blue eyed and blonde! Genetics are a thing and it's amazing how that happens.

This is why education matters. I learned about genetics and inherited traits between naps in biology and immature jokes in s*x ed. Dafuq was he doing?

You dont need any knowledge of genetics to know that many babies are born with light/blond hair and grey/blue eyes and only develop their adult colours in the first year or two. One would expect most mothers and especially grandmothers to know this.

He could have stayed with her and give her the benefit of the doubt, while they were waiting. You know - help a new mother who's body is healing, with the daily stuff. But hotel mama was so much better, and boohoo, his ego was down because he was wrong. A pity she didn't know that she was procreating with a worthless worm.

Considering the MIL, it's no wonder the husband was a jerk. Recovery is going to be hard work, and it begins with distancing from MIL until the couple can patch this up, and MIL acknowledges her bad behavior.
