Some of the images people post online can range from cute to an utter spit in the face of photography. But there is a specific subset of absurd pictures where a person has decided that no one will notice the mountain of filters they have applied.
We’ve gathered some of the most egregious examples of “Instagram versus reality” on the internet. We also got in touch with Erin Vogel, PhD, Assistant Professor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center to discuss beauty standards and how they warp people’s perceptions. Bored Panda got in touch with Erin Vogel, PhD, Assistant Professor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and she was kind enough to share some thoughts with us on beauty standards, what causes them, where they come from and what people can do to change their mindset.
“Beauty standards are rooted in systems of power. People with privilege set standards that are not attainable—and maybe not desirable—for most people. For example, in the United States, many beauty standards are centered around White people’s appearances.”

When people with certain features (e.g., thinner or more muscular bodies) are consistently shown in the media, we collectively start to believe that those features are ideal.”

“Many people who edit their images may be trying to fit a certain ideal that seems normal and desirable on social media.” Unfortunately, if you spend too much time just looking at edited photos, you end up with a skewed idea of what human beings look like. So if 90% of the people you see are on Instagram, the photos here are not that far from the norm.

Hate these articles, it’s just bullying. Instead of laughing at people the question should be; why do they feel the need to alter their appearance in such radical ways? Is it societal pressures, mental illness or just feeling upset about how bad they ‘think’ they look? Just imagine if it was a photograph of you that someone has stolen/harvested from social media and you are just browsing the internet years later and find yourself the butt of jokes and nastiness, it’s just wrong. Do these people have friends and family who are seeing these photoshopped fever dreams? Oof. Ok, the vast majority of them don't look anywhere near believable ... but ... none of them benefit from it. Those huge butts? Seriously? That, to me, looks more medically relevant than aesthetically desirable - were even a fraction of that sudden and local growth true, head to the Doctor's, any medical field, now - regardless of their profession within the medical field, they'll likely know where to direct you, as long as there's still sufficient seating available ... so, hurry up a bit, maybe...

I agree with Limey but will add that the many folks who produce these self masterpieces may unfortunately think that these images are picture perfect for public release. They ain't! The extra sad part is many of these folks probably aren't bad to see, as they really are, but they are disappointed in themselves and this is their escape mechanism that goes beyond wearing cool clothing, or picking a fantastic photo location, and/or a witty comment with the photo.

It also make me worry about us as a society that we've driven these people to believe they need to look a certain way to be accepted.
