It's a given that you must obtain your drivers licence before you can legally operate a vehicle on the road. But that doesn't stop people from doing the most absurd things while driving. It's almost as if common sense flies right out of the passenger window the moment certain morons take the wheel. God forbid they have a trailer hooked up at the back...
Towing is something that takes careful planning, and a fair amount of sound judgment. You can't just load whatever you want, however you want and hope for the best. Yet, that's exactly what a few idiots do. From boats, to cars, equipment, cargo, and even a Boeing 737, the internet is filled with spectacular examples of people towing things without properly thinking it through.
In fact, there's an entire online community dedicated to sharing hilarious pictures of this phenomenon. Aptly called Idiots Towing Things, the page receives around 195,000 visitors every week. They're all there to laugh (or cry) at the sheer craziness that's taking over our roads. Bored Panda has put together a list of the best posts for you to scroll through before you consider hooking anything up to your vehicle.

You hook up the trailer, load it with all you can fit, and off you go... If only it were that simple. Experts warn that towing is no child's play, and can be extremely dangerous if a driver lacks experience or doesn't pay attention to safety procedures.
"Driving when towing a trailer requires additional knowledge, safety precautions and driving skills," notes the Arrive Alive website. "The driver must be aware of challenges such as decreased acceleration and braking performance, reduced vehicle control and manoeuvrability etc."
It adds that sadly, many people aren't fully aware of the safest method of towing cargo, and that at many crash sites, trailers are often nearby.

Would be interesting to see if they're able to control this while backing up.
Besides ensuring the trailer is fit to be on the road, drivers should always make sure never to overload it.
"Overloading any vehicle creates significant risks - so much more if the trailer towed is overloaded!" warns the site. "Overloading a vehicle can compromise the vehicle's body, brakes, chassis, wheels and/or engine."
And loading the trailer properly isn't simply a case of guessing how much it can carry.

Unconventional Signaling
Before you even consider loading a trailer, you need to know how much weight the towing vehicle can safely pull. You should be able to find this information in the owner's manual. You'll also need to be aware of how much weight the trailer hitch and ball mount can handle. This is also known as tongue weight, and can be adjusted by using a weight-distributing trailer hitch or by balancing the load inside the trailer itself.
"Incorrectly sized hitch balls are a common cause of trailer accidents, so make sure the ball on the tow hitch is the same size as the coupler on the trailer," warns the Weekly Safety website. "The hitch balls typically come in 3 sizes: 1 7⁄8 inches, 2 inches, or 2 5⁄16 inches. Also, pay attention to the weight capacity of the hitch ball."
One Strap
If you live in livestock country this is just another day in the life. Those bales are probably 800-1200 lbs, so total load probably under 15,000 - which is easily towed by a 1 ton pickup. (not necessarily within official capacities, but not that far out) I will say, however, the one strap hold-down method is kind of sketchy. (although I've seen them moved shortish distances with no tie-down at all - those bales are harder to get rolling than you'd think)

Apparently they didn't care what this might do to the finish on that limo.
Another important consideration is the Aggregate Trailer Mass for the specific trailer you're using. In other words, explains the site, how much weight can the trailer safely carry? "Ensure that mass/ weight specified by the trailer manufacturer is not exceeded," warn the road safety experts.
And it doesn't stop there...

As well as thr poster's cracked windscreen - illegal to drive in the UK.
You need to work out how much the trailer will weigh when loaded, or the gross trailer weight (GTW). You'll also need to establish something known as the Gross Combination weight rating.
"The maximum weight of the trailer and tow vehicle combined is the gross combination weight rating (GCWR)," notes the Arrive Alive team. They suggest that you always check what the road legislation stipulates, as well as what the manufacturers' guides suggest for both the towing vehicle and the trailer towed.

Looks Like This One Hurt
"Trailers loaded incorrectly can start swaying dangerously at high speeds and can easily jack-knife if the driver has to make a sudden stop," warns the Weekly Safety team. "Load the trailer in a way that distributes the weight evenly and ensures that the cargo is equally balanced on each side."
They add that all cargo should be fully contained and supported by the flatbed trailer.
"If the cargo being transported by the trailer is longer than the trailer itself, or overhangs off the trailer in any way, be sure to check your state’s regulations on overhang restrictions and requirement," advises the site.

No Words To Describe This One
Once you've checked the safety of the trailer, and secured all cargo, you're still not off the hook. There are very specific driving tips you need to be aware of, including things like height restrictions, increased stopping distances due to the weight, and needing to make wider turns so that you don't hit or ride up over curbs.

"Take every precaution to avoid slamming on the brakes and making abrupt turns because sudden movements can shift the trailer cargo. If the trailer begins to sway while driving, ease off the accelerator to reduce your speed but do not apply the brakes, as this can make the sway become worse," advise the experts.
And if it all seems like too much to handle, you might want to consider hiring a professional to transport your boat, equipment, furniture, or plane on your behalf.

I live near to a state park. The closest gas stations are 3 miles away and they always keep one set of pumps blocked off so the cars and trucks pulling trailers can come in and fill up. That's actually a pretty small trailer. I've seen them as long as 42'.
