When many people look at the railroad spike they see nothing more than scrap metal, something that needs to be tossed in the bin and recycled into something else. In the eyes of a blacksmith or bladesmith it takes on a whole different persona, It may become a set of tongs, a plant hanging hook, a steak turner for the grill, even a knife, or in this case a dagger. Decades ago. I watched a RenFaire blacksmith render railroad spikes into daggers. Her sales price was quite reasonable, too. It's my favorite letter-opener now.
I don't have the equipment to do this, but the process was fun to watch.
