Man Pays His Mate 20 Bucks To Bring His Goat Over So It Can Take Care Of His Overgrown Lawn, Upsets Wife

No one likes chores; there is no denying it. Doing the laundry, vacuuming, taking out the trash, defrosting the refrigerator, washing the cheese grater, sorting socks, whatever – it’s all very tedious and, frankly, quite repetitive.

However, remember “work smart, not hard”? The star of today’s article did just that. He hates cutting grass, and is there a better way to deal with it than offering your pal 20 bucks so he can bring his goat around that’ll happily munch it all up? Exactly, I don’t think so.

More info: Reddit

Man is not a fan of doing yard work, but it was time to mow the lawn

So he pays his friend 20 bucks to bring his goat over to eat the grass

AITA for renting a goat?” – this internet user took to one of Reddit’s most favorite communities to ask its members if it was indeed a questionable move to pay his mate to bring his grass-loving goat over so that it could save him from a chore and handle his overgrown lawn that desperately needed to be mowed. The post managed to garner over 8.4K upvotes as well as 1.7K comments discussing the man’s ingenuity.

It’s no news that plenty of neighborhoods are controlled by homeowner associations. To give you a real number, a publisher dedicated to making the lives of landlords, tenants, and real estate investors easier says that HOAs in the United States manage 355,000 communities, with an average of 22 new associations forming daily!

While the intent is to supervise day-to-day things and maintain social cohesion and peaceful coexistence between the people – not many are in awe of their rather pestering approach. But hey! You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.

The author of today’s post, for instance, hates yard work, but it was already long overdue. The 30-year-old was pretty clear in expressing his disdain for the task and even mentioned that each time he hears the sound of a lawn mower, he wishes he could remove his ears like Mr. Potato Head and lock them in a box. Moreover, it hurts his shoulder, which is still sore from a high school trauma, and he also hates the smell of cut grass and gasoline. Basically, the man’s got the whole package.

The family lives in a warm state, and according to the HOA, it was time to cut the grass. But here’s the dilemma: the lawn desperately needed some maintenance, the author didn’t want to do it, and his wife is also not a fan of the activity as she once tipped into a lake despite multiple warnings from her broken-legged father, who she was doing the chore for.

Some might say it was a hopeless situation, but the man had a mean plan in mind. The thing is, he happened to know a guy who owned a goat, so he reached out to him and offered him $20 to bring it over to eat the grass. Everything worked out perfectly: it was environmentally friendly, the goat was fed, the grass was leveled as per the policy, his pal earned an extra buck, and the author didn’t have to lift a finger. What’s not to like?

He later gets in trouble with his wife for making them look like “weird hicks”

Image credits: Tiia Pakk(not the actual image)

Well, the missus wasn’t happy.

As you probably guessed, a bunch of neighbors saw the goat and thought it was hysterical that the couple had it do all their work. The woman called out the post’s creator for making them look like “weird hicks” in front of all her mates and has since been mocking the situation and making random comments about getting a horse to carry their groceries and whatnot.

The man had not anticipated such a bad reaction from his spouse, so he took to Reddit to determine whether it was, in fact, a rather unorthodox way out.

Later on, after the post went viral and gathered a fair share of curious commenters, the author edited it and added some extra commentary. He stated that the goat did not break any HOA standards – and while they do have strict rules against raising farm animals, he’s permitted to have a little goat pal (peep its picture in the comment section of the article) since it’s hypothetically acceptable for the HOA president’s daughter to have a pony at her birthday party for a couple of hours.

Anyways, what are your thoughts on this?

Fellow community members shared their thoughts and opinions on this rather amusing tale

The wife is the poster child for weaponized incompetence. She put a mower on the side of a hill, after being explicitly told not to do so and it rolled into the lake so now she thinks she is exempt from doing it ever again because she did it so poorly. And this is despite it causing her husband physical pain and a 99% chance that her lawn is flat an nowhere near a lake. She also ticks the boxes for gendering things unnecessarily. She should mow or they should pay a company since it is actually hurting the husband and may cause long term shoulder issues.

Right. She tipped the mower into the pond at dad's house, how does that exempt her from doing the mowing at her own house? We split our mowing duties (push mower) and I actually end up doing it more than my husband because I don't b***h and moan about it

A goat is quieter, less work and far more environmentally friendly than a lawn mower. The husband isn't in pain and the neighbours get a good laugh. Win win, I'd say.

I abhore people that tell others how to do something that they themselves never do or help with. If she wants the lawn mowed instead of grazed, she can do it herself. If the goat gets the job done, great! My husband and I always say we should get goats to take care of the grass for us.

I can't help but wonder if wife was really complaining or if she thought she just being funny and husband didn't get the joke? Personally, I thought the idea of chickens cleaning windows was hilarious. But it's really hard to tell secondhand and without hearing the delivery, which is why I don't like making judgments on these AITA posts.

Nothing is more ridiculous than caring what other people think. The goat is far less ridiculous than caring about what people think of the goat. NTA. And the *most* ridiculous thing in this whole story is the HOA. HOAs are the worst.

NTA. I wife is so concerned about appearances she can hire a lawn service and shut up. She's fully aware of your aversion to lawn mowing but doesn't care. However, you're supposed to do something you have an issue, both physical and emotional, with to appease her? Her issue with lawn mowers stems from her inability to listen to her dad's warning. Unless your house is on a lake her excuse about falling into the water is pure BS.

The wife sounds like a bit of a tool, to be honest. Tell her goats are trendy and green, like another commenter above mentioned and that will change her tune since she cares so much what other people think. Tip from a 53 year-old who’s sometimes learned life lessons the hard way - don’t wait until you’re over 50 to not give a damn what other people think. Do they pay your bills?

I want to pet that little goat! How is a goat not the most brilliant idea for yardwork? saves gas and feed for the goat! We have an area that the city is "mowing" every year by releasing a flock of sheep to graze it down. I love it.

Portland Oregon used goats for grassy areas that are hard to get to and mow. It's considered "being Green". I bet the goat herder made more than $20 for the city service. The wife is out of touch and the husband could have bragged about being knowledgeable and concerned about environmental issues. The drawback of doing this on your lawn is poo pellets

The "chicken for window cleaning" comment makes me think the wife wasn't necessarily (only) upset about wHaT wOuLd tHe nEiGhBoUrS tHiNk, but also that the husband basically payed someone else to do part of his household chores, when she is probably, purely statistically speaking, stemming the disproportionately larger part of the household work on her own.

He got the job done and since mowing is causing him physical pain really should be exempted from that chore anyway. If he expected her to do a chore that caused her pain people would eat him alive. I have much more of a problem with the wife thinking being to stupid/ incompetent to use a mower correctly means she never has to mow again, and I find it quite plausible its about appearances given the nasty gendered "no real man here" remarks she made.

Goats are a very effective and environmentally-friendly method of clearing vegetation, so good on OP for that. One could argue that goats saved the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, CA a few years ago. They regularly hire a goat herd to clear grasses on the hills below the museum. When fires swept through the area a few years ago, the Library was safe in part because the goats had already eaten nearly everything nearby that could have burned.

He took the ultimate green option. No gas burned, so no pollutants were expelled into the atmosphere, and no chance of groundwater contamination from leaking gas or engine oil. The neighbors were even entertained. The wife is the AH, not him. I pay $35 a week to have my grass cut. I'd love a $20 goat, even $25...

We kept a hard of goats to keep the brush knocked back in the no-man's-land around a high security facility I once worked at. They were fat and happy and by far the best thing about the place. Unfortunately, his green lawn (and that of every home in this HOA) is a desolate wasteland that's HORRIBLE for our ecoysystem, goat or no goat. Maybe he could get around HOA rules by replacing the ugly grass with a diversity of plants and flowers instead? There are plenty of low maintenance options.

Back when I was a kid, in the early 60s, we had a patch of property that was hard to mow because the land was very uneven We lived in the country. So my father first borrowed a cow from a neighbor to eat up the grass. We got tired of having a cow, because nobody wanted to shovel up cow patties, so we sent her packing. My parents lived in the city all their lives. They knew nothing about farm animals. Then my father borrowed a goat from the same neighbor. The goat was on a stake and chain, but this little girl figured out how to get loose. A lot. Ever time she got loose, she'd head for our back door. She'd scratch at the door, trying to get in the house. We figured that she must have been allowed to go in the house at her residence. Needless to say, my mother had a sh*tfit, so we had to send the little goat back to her home. But we lived in the country, and not the suburbs. I wouldn't want to walk down the street and see a goat eating in my neighbors yard either.

One day when I was in university I stepped outside my apartment building and started walking along the sidewalk, only to notice a herd of goats on the hill across the street. I thought, "Hmm, that's unusual," and I went back inside to ask the internet what was going on. Turns out the community college down the block had hired a herd of goats to clear the hill so they could put in an additional parking lot. This is an actual business. They come out, set up a perimeter, and bring a couple of dogs to keep the goats from wandering off.

That's the only way i can think of that would make it possible to for someone to run themselves over or slip under the mower

Sounds like you just need a robotic mower or to pay for a lawn service. I mean the goat thing works, but it is being a little extra. You bought the house knowing it had a yard and knowing you had grass height restrictions. I hate mowing and the smell of grass because I have bad allergies and I’m usually sick a couple days after I do it. But I still do it. I chose a house with a lawn.

Personally, I thought the idea of chickens cleaning windows was hilarious. But it's really hard to tell secondhand and without hearing the delivery, which is why I don't like making judgments on these AITA posts.

I mean how do people in your family use a lawnmower, start it up tie a rope around the blade control so it doesn't die and then pull it with a rope? That's the only way i can think of that would make it possible to for someone to run themselves over or slip under the mower

You bought the house knowing it had a yard and knowing you had grass height restrictions.
