While I don’t personally have megalophobia myself, I can certainly understand why others might. It’s not exactly pleasant to imagine myself as a tiny ant next to a massive ship, building, mountain or whale. And clearly, lots of people around the world either have this phobia or are captivated by images of it, as the Megalophobia subreddit has amassed over 949K members.

This community is a great place to be exposed to images and videos of massive things if you’re trying to conquer your own fear. Or, if you just want to learn more about some of the huge objects out there in the world, you’ll certainly find plenty of interesting pics! In fact, we’re big fans of this group at Bored Panda and have covered it several times in the past. It seems like they’ll never run out of colossal content!

If you’ve never heard of megalophobia before today, that’s completely understandable. After all, it’s not a word that most people are throwing around in daily conversation. According to the Cleveland Clinic, this phobia is “a type of anxiety disorder in which a person experiences intense fear of large objects.”

Things that typically trigger megalophobia might be tall buildings, large statues and monuments, huge or vast formations in nature (for example, mountains, lakes, oceans or volcanoes), massive ships, large vehicles such as buses or trains, vast spaces like stadiums and massive animals. And while it’s impossible to know exactly how many people struggle with megalophobia, the Cleveland Clinic notes that between 7 to 10% of the population has a specific phobia.

You might be thinking of Holy Island in the UK. (Where you really have to careful of the tides.) Mont St Michel was like this in the past, too, but now there is a bridge. Rarely, it can also be covered by the water, but it is quite unusual. Last time I went was before the bridge was built though!

This is not true. It's nothing like that big, otherwise we'd see it with the naked eye. It's about half the size of the moon at the moment, but it will get bigger.

1 year ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

You are mistaken, this picture is accurate actually. It's not "half the size of the moon", Andromeda is 3 degrees across the sky and the moon is only 0.5 making Andromeda SIX times larger than the moon on the sky. And you can in fact see Andromeda with the naked eye. It's just much much dimmer in real life, so you might just see the galactic center if there's light pollution. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?

Now, you may be wondering if you have megalophobia yourself but just never knew there was a name for it. If you feel intense fear and have anxiety around large objects, it’s possible that you’re a megalophobe. You might also have a rapid heartbeat or shortness of breath when you see something massive. Other symptoms include feeling dizzy or lightheaded, feeling nauseous or having a strong desire to get away from the huge object as soon as you can.

Beautiful statue. Glad they changed the name of the city, apparently it used to be Stalingrad. Too bad their government still needs a kick in the pants and more. I just wish we could be peaceful about it, you know? Russia needs to work on fixing themselves and leave other countries, who were doing just fine without them, alone.

Volgograd was formerly known as Stalingrad. In WWII it was the site of very bloody battles for every street. Why was the city so important that both sides lost so many lives there? Only because of its name. So that statue is a memorial to totalitarianism.

In the US, they'd have to have fences 30 ft high to keep the idiots from falling over the cliffs trying to take a selfie and to keep family from suing when that happened. I'm American, by the way. Very familiar with those kinds of idiots. Edit to add: you couldn't drag me to within 20 feet of the edge.

When it comes to what causes megalophobia to develop, Medical News Today notes that it’s not always easy to pinpoint the root cause. It could have been past trauma involving a huge object or a vast space, or it could just be learned behavior from seeing how others react to massive objects. For example, if your parents were always terrified of huge things, they might have unintentionally passed that fear onto you. Genetic factors and cultural influences can also be at play.

Typhoon class ballistic missile submarine. Carries 20 nuclear tipped ICBM's that can reach most all locations in the continental US. The ICBM's are in the 10 megaton range of damage. One would be enough to flatten New York city. If converted to a cruise missile carrier, it holds some 192 cruise missiles, each that can carry a tactical nuclear device in the 1 kiloton range. (roughly the same damage that hit Nagasaki.) 574 ft 2 in long, 75 feet wide, 12 foot draft. 160 crewmembers. "reported" max depth of 1300 feet.

Like any phobia, megalophobia certainly isn’t pleasant to have. But with some hard work and therapy, it may be possible to overcome. Verywell Mind recommends cognitive behavioral therapy as one approach to conquering this phobia. This is where a patient is encouraged to replace their fearful thoughts with healthier ones. The goal is to change their perspective and view the huge objects through a less scary lens.

Exposure therapy can also be helpful for some megalophobes. This is when patients expose themselves to the objects that are causing them fear repeatedly until they become desensitized to them. For example, scrolling through this list full of massive objects might be the perfect way to expose yourself to some megalophobia-triggering content! You’re in a safe environment, where you know these items can’t actually harm you, and you have the chance to see them for what they are.

Khufu's Pyramid (the biggest one) was the tallest man-made structure on earth for over 3800 years, though the height of its successor, Lincoln Cathedral, is disputed. Stripping the outer limestone casing and erosion has taken some seven meters, or 25 feet, in height from the structure.

The one in Hamburg has an amazing nightclub at the top (or used to, I think it still does - my clubbing days are behind me). You could walk out onto the roof in the early morning hours and watch the sun come up after a sweaty night of dancing. No one can complain about the noise if the walls are 6-metre thick concrete! I think there's a hotel in there now and there's a rooftop garden, which was being worked on the last time I went there.

Thriveworks also recommends grounding techniques to help combat megalophobia. This can involve naming physical objects in your surroundings, identifying calming sensory experiences and listing items. For example, you might help ground yourself by listing all of your favorite films or albums alphabetically. Distracting your brain can help anxiety dissipate. And of course, getting in touch with your body by taking deep breaths or doing breathing exercises can make a huge difference too.

IIRC the entrance is here but the giant hole around it was hacked/blasted into the pyramid at several points in time (after the limestone casing stones were removed for use as building stones elsewhere)? In the early 1800s a couple of English guys blasted here to expose more of the interior, one example of the destructiveness that passed for archeology for far too long.

The picture is grossly distorted. The airport is on a hill but it's a lot less steep than it looks here.

I was in bed at the time, too. I worked retail and had the day off. My husband was at his retail job at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, IL. My friend called me. I got up, turned on the TV, and watched for hours. We talked and cried together. When we heard about the plane going down in the field, I told her "They fought back. You mark my words. They fought back." Living in the Chicago suburbs most of my life, the planes were part of the background. You don't think of seeing or hearing them. It was incredibly weird seeing skies without planes. Considering we weren't far from O'Hare. I remember my husband came home since they shut down the mall. It was a really sad, surreal time.

My daughter was 3 years old then. I was standing and staring in shock at the news and she said 'mom, why is that man falling in the air?' and it was extremely difficult to come up with an answer that wouldn't totally freak her out. (I can't remember what I said but it certainly wasn't the truth: "he's jumped from a building on fire because it was he didn't want to burn to death, he wanted to die quickly.) I turned off the TV as soon as she said that.

That’s more than the F-1 engines. That’s the business end of a Saturn 5. It gives a good idea, but still doesn’t quite convey how insanely enormous it really is. Standing underneath one where he is and looking up is mind-boggling. I stood and stared with my mouth hanging open for a -long- time.

Towed -from- Scapa Flow. She’d been scuttled there by her crew after the end of the war, then raised and towed away to be scrapped elsewhere.

Yes, that's the tell tale triangle toothed edge of the Russian Venera probes. The ones that didn't crash because of the violent atmosphere or mechanical problems lasted 50 to 120 minutes before being destroyed by Venus's extremely hostile environment. They were designed to minimally last 30, so well done designers.

Why is the scale 'insane'? Only counting the 'rocky' planets Venus is the same size as earth, Mars and Mercury are smaller. Is the scale of our planet insane as well? Would it really make a difference if this was a photo from the Antarctic or Sahara?

You don't have to be invited; you'd just buy a ticket, like you would for a plane. I think they're supposed to be flying to Shetland, which is where my MIL lives, so I might get to have a ride! A darn sight better than a 16-hour ferry ride over the notoriously choppy North Sea!

It's a giant Confederate Memorial and the largest "high relief sculpture" in the world, featuring Stonewall Jackson, Jefferson Davis, and Robert E. Lee. Has long been associated with the Ku Klux Klan. It was first proposed in 1915 and completed in 1972.
