Unfortunately, that’s a view quite a lot of people share. A 2021 publication, titled A Snapshot of the Public’s Views on History, found that as much as two-thirds of people consider history to be “little more than an assemblage of names, dates, and events.”
But in reality, it’s so much more!
Freelance Origins Unleashed
Fun story, but not entirely true. Yes, the word is based on medieval mercenary warriors, but the word itself is much newer: it's from the early 1800s, not from the Middle Ages. In the Middle Ages they called them tipendiarii (stipendiarie), soliderii (soldiers) or mercennarius (mercenaries).
At first I though "that sounds way to much like folk-etymology", but it isn't. It is interesting, though, that the term was coined after lances were no longer much in use (the first recorded use was in Ivanhoe). Of course, Sir Walter Scott coined it (most likely) for a story set in medieval times, but still.
No you are a mercenary warrior, much better than a Knight, knights were almost always born into the ruling class, but mercenary warriors had to literally fight their way up in the world, and by surviving got more and more efficient at their jobs!

Words That Counted
The average age of an American soldier in the Vietnam war was 19. That means quite a few were 18. They were kids who weren't considered responsible enough to drink alcohol but were (mostly) forced into a war with a country they didn't understand & told to k**l their fellow human beings. If they were lucky enough to make it home, they were then condemned by most of their peers. Oh, and let's not forget those doused in Agent Orange who suffered for the rest of their days with not only mental but physical agony. What a monumental fùck up that entire farce was.
As one of those 19 years olds, it’s fair for me to point out that most of the folks under 60 also don’t know that we weren’t allowed to vote until 21 back then, so we were disenfranchised. However, no matter how much the US service members might have suffered, the Vietnamese people suffered infinitely more. It was an illegal, immoral, and brutal effort by the US.

Talking about history in his TEDxTalk, British historian and Cahoon Family Professor of American History at Emory University, Patrick N. Allitt, Ph.D., too, pointed out that for many people—children in particular—history seems to be not much more than a “long catalogue of names and dates, people and places”.
Youngsters often think that everything inside a history textbook is “too remote from their own experience” or “too remote to have any real interest to their own lives.” However, as they grow older, people often find history getting increasingly fascinating.
Moreover, once they reach a certain age, they might notice children studying something they were a part of themselves. “And then you realize, history isn’t just all finished once and for all. It isn’t closed up in those books. It’s continuing right up to the present and we’re part of it,” Prof. Allitt said.
“As you begin to describe to your children the world that you grow up in, very often they find that fascinating. It’s easier for them to connect with than with descriptions of what the presidents did or the great wars.”

I will be the first to admit it: as a child, I too thought that history was mostly about dates and names (which, to make matters worse, you had to learn by heart before the next history lesson). I didn’t see the bigger picture. That was until I met the right teacher.
It’s no surprise that the right educator can make a world of difference when it comes to students’ interest in their subject; and history is no exception.
But instead of looking for the right teacher, some people turn to other sources of information for learning about history, such as documentaries or museums.

That aligned with people’s views that one can learn history anywhere, which is a sentiment shared by as much as 90% of respondents, and that it is easier to learn about the past when it is presented as entertainment, which 73% participants agreed to.

While many people agree that it’s easier to learn history when it’s presented as entertainment, it’s important to remember that your favored history movies or TV series might not be entirely factually accurate.
A study from Washington University in St. Louis found that watching a film that is consistent with the textual material on the same matter can increase correct recall by roughly 50%.
“In contrast, when information in the film directly contradicted the text, people often falsely recalled the misinformation portrayed in the film, sometimes as much as 50 percent of the time,” noted one of the researchers behind the study, psychology doctoral student in Arts & Sciences, Andrew Butler.
Butler continued to point out that, “Although films may increase learning and interest in the classroom, educators should be aware that students might learn inaccurate information, too, even if the correct information has been presented in a text. More broadly, these same positive and negative effects apply to the consumption of popular history films by the general public.”

Load More Replies...The Gilgamesh epic is one of the most significant literary works written by humans. There are several Old Testament parallels, like the story of Noah (Utnapishtim in Gilgamesh), but written with humor. The gods created mankind to do their work and worship them, but they were so noisy, the gods repented of it, and decided to destroy them with a flood. They all swore not to tell any human. The god of wisdom disagreed, so he went to Utnapishtim's back yard, and addressed, not a human, but the wall: "Hear me, oh wall! I am Anu, god of wisdom. There will soon be a flood, so it would be a good thing if Mr. U. made an ark in the following dimensions...." Mr. U. went to his fellow citizens, and told them that if they made an ark, there would be a deluge (the noun usualy applied to wheat or jewels, and not rain) once the ark was completed. The populace pitched in, and Mr. U. locked them out as it started to rain. Many amazing threads. Many great translations are available.
Why are they so interested in a really old gay love story? If it was any good they'd make a mini-series of it.

Yup. Caesar did have an affair with Brutus' mom

It always surprises me that people think that, given his most famous picture is themed after an air raid carried out by bombers

History Major here, I loved math. I just wasn't good enough at it. I got a B in my final Calc course at university, but I'm convinced the teacher gave me that grade out of pity. I was going to see her once a week, and hired a tutor, and still struggled. I found it absolutely fascinating, I just could never remember when to apply which formula. Also, exact dates aren't that important to history. What matters is the causes and consequences of events. For instance, I don't know exactly when the Great Fire of Rome was (1st century AD), but Nero blamed it on the Christians, and used it as an excuse to persecute them.

I choose; The arment is widely considered the most effective medieval helmet design. It offered maximum protection with a close-fitting design that enclosed the entire head, while still allowing for good mobility. The armet, particularly those from Milan in the late 15th century, showcase impressive craftsmanship and design.

History tends to focus on German atrocities (which were horrific) but since we can’t seem to walk and chew gum at the same time, we don’t hear much about the ones the Japanese committed which were equally ghastly and, in many cases, worse. The Räpe of Nanking is one of the most brutal things you’ll ever hear about.

This was in the 80s so most of the information kids used to get was coming only through school books and magazines. Then I found about how rude Japanese people are towards non japanese population. I have lost interest in visiting Japan.
One of the reasons Germany allied with Japan in WWII was because both nations were quite racist and vicious towards those they viewed as inferior.

I'm curious how many of these atrocities were carried out by the civilians of Nagasaki and Hiroshima that were going about their daily lives until they were vaporized. I don't see any scenario that makes it ok destroy two entire cities and their inhabitants.

I have heard a description of The Art of War: these ideas were written down to try to get basic competence into court officials who had been sent to command troops. These officials had no education about the military, and maybe no interest. Simplicity and repetition in the Art of War, then, is along the lines of "As I wrote in my last email, ..." --- Whether this notion is true or not I don't know. I mention it just as a joke, but don't take it seriously.
Given it's around the same time one guy is writing "none of heaven's winds can move me" to his rival across the lake, the other guy sends back the message "fart" and so the first guy comes storming over to the rival's house and the rival says "no wind of heaven can move you but a fart blows you across the lake?" Given it's that time period, pretty much anything is possible.
