Owning a pet benefits an individual in ways they might not have imagined. For example, one recent study shows that owning a pet companion can be worth over $90k a year in terms of life satisfaction. This just proves that a fur baby is one of the best investments you can make in life!
Truly, not only do they provide companionship, affection, and serenity, but they can also be free entertainment. Just look at these critters who hid themselves in the strangest and most ridiculous places imaginable. Granted, some of them did it better than others, but let's appreciate the effort and give them all a virtual pet, shall we?

Sneaky Kitten
You can kitten proof your house as much as you want, yet they will still find a way to get in trouble ^^
Cat owner's first rule. You look for your cat first at the smallest box you have in your household, Second rule: You don't buy that fancy cat-playground. Just the boxes ....
With my cat allergies, this is not the type of tissue that would help me, lol.
Every kitten I've had has pulled that stunt. The fun part is when Mama has 4, and they *all* try to cram in there at once.
My Cat Literally Thinks I Can’t See Him And Jumps At Me When I Walk By
Play along like you can't find him. I do this with my girl cat and she gets so excited when she thinks she has me fooled. My boy cat thinks he is too cool to play with Hoomans.
My boys will do this, it's my female cats who were aloof 🤣

She thinks she’s a jaguar in darkest Africa… You are passing prey. Meow!
A pet folding themselves into a box of tissues or playing hide-and-seek behind a transparent curtain is probably just playful behavior. Nevertheless, there usually is an explanation for them doing these strange things. If they're trying to camouflage themselves into their surroundings, dogs might have one of these four intentions:
- They're looking for a safe space and just want to be cozy for a couple of hours;
- They're instinctively looking for places to hide their secret stash of snacks;
- They're looking for their favorite comfort object (toy, scrap of food, blanket, etc.);
- They need to regulate their body temperature, either to warm up or cool down.
My Cat Is Obsessed With 2 Things: Splooting And Hiding Under The Rug. Always Discover Her "Hiding" With Just Her Feet Sticking Out... And The Rug Breathing
Her roundness makes a very visible lump in the rug, and her little splooted chicken legs help too. Still, I'm always on the lookout for hidden cats whenever I'm stepping over rugs now. She's instilled a new fear into me.
This would be my nightmare! A little more than a month ago I tripped AND fell on my cat! I'm 360ish lbs she's like 6 lbs. Thankfully shelves broke my fall and other than both us being traumatized, there were no major injuries (she cut her nose running from me) 2 days later she was back to kneading me (she stayed away from me for the most pt b4 that)
My boy has a conky round belly and chickem legs as well. It makes him look like a single nut peanut with the pinched ends 🤣🤣🤣

I Found Chuche Two Years Ago, When He Was About 8 Weeks Old, On The Street. When I Brought Him Home, He Spent The Entire First Day Hiding Behind A Table Leg
My Dad bought home a tiny ginger kitty, he shot behind our huge fridge freezer. 1 hour it took to finally get him out safe and sound, 1 huge fridge freezer moved, scraping up the floor. Dad handed him to me and he was mine for 14 years!
Might have been cos of the whole ginger one brain cell thing that he'd hid though!
Load More Replies...However, there can be other, more concerning reasons.
Older dogs may retreat to their hiding place if their cognitive abilities are declining. Some dogs develop dementia and become confused about their whereabouts, get anxious, and tend to hide more often if they're feeling overwhelmed.
When dogs get frightened, they look for a safe space to hide. If your pooch ever panicked when fireworks were popping outside, you've probably experienced them hiding under a table or something similar. Thunderstorms elicit similar fears in some dogs, too.

Our Big Bad Pitbull, Hiding From The Lawnmower
Whenever I see anything about animals reacting badly to lawnmowers, vacuum cleaners, etc., I wonder what it sounds like to them. Animals have *very* different frequency responses in their hearing that humans do, and we only put effort into making the noise acceptable for us. I'd bet the high frequency sounds from a vacuum cleaner are awful for a pet.
When my husband takes the dogs for their morning walk is when I get as much vacuuming done as I can. Win-win for all of us. :)
Load More Replies...My aussiedoodle doesn't blink a single blink with thunder but thinks the mower is going to eat her.
Pleased he has that hiding place, lawnmowers make terrifying sounds especially Sunday mornings.
If there have been changes in their environment (construction, new roommates, or moving altogether), a dog might be too stressed. That's when they look for a remote hiding place. If you spend some quality time with your dog and go for plenty of walks, that might reduce the stress.
Illnesses or injuries cause dogs to retreat, too. In this way, dogs are similar to cats, who usually hide when they're in pain or have been injured. This is an instinctual defense mechanism: animals hide away from predators when they're feeling vulnerable.

Similar problem with my rescue. The vets have to do it and it's a multi-person operation while he wails and shouts the house down and sounds like he's being m******d. He was three when I got him and it's something he's never adapted to. Still, he doesn't need that done very often thankfully! This Dog Will Sit Like This For Hours
Hiding is a normal behavior for pregnant cats and dogs. This is called 'nesting,' which essentially is looking for a safe space to give birth. Pets usually look for a secluded, safe space where they will be safe during their most vulnerable time. To mask their and their litter's scent, mothers also consume the afterbirth – that is an instinctual way to protect themselves from predators.

Humans aren't the only species that get anxiety. Pets get anxious too, but that often manifests itself in destructive behaviors, loud barking or meowing, but hiding can also be a symptom. When separation anxiety hits, pets especially look for comfort in things that have their owners' scent. So, they might hide under the bed, sheets, sofa, and so on.
I Always Build Her A Fort To Hide In While I Vacuum
My cat does this whenever she finds us getting ready to go out. The deodorant is her signal to climb the bed so that one of us can put the blanket over her.
My cat isn't afraid of the vacuum as long as it's not within inches of him and he's actually curious about the Shop-Vac.

He's So Good At Hiding, I Sometimes Can't Find Him For Days
After bringing a new pet into your home, it's no surprise if they hide under the bed. It's especially true for smaller furry pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas. According to the experts at Oxbow Animal Health, that's because they're prey species and they're very vigilant about any threats in their environment.
"The sound of a chair being pulled out on a tile floor may not make you duck for cover (you brave human, you), but it could very well be enough to throw off your rabbit’s entire afternoon," they claim.

Derpy Baby
When your pet is hiding for reals, it's best not to disturb them. Of course, that's after you make sure they're not injured or feeling unwell in any other way. Sometimes, even animals want to feel unbothered, so maybe this is their version of curling up in bed and binge-watching their favorite show?

When I was a child we used to caravan for holidays. At the time, our cavalier king Charles spaniel was scared of thunder. His favourite hiding place? The bathroom. Anyone who has spent time in a touring caravan knows the bathroom isn't the biggest place anyway - you wanted to go during a storm, you had to climb over the dog or hold it until the thunder stopped and we could coax him out again.
