Owning a pet benefits an individual in ways they might not have imagined. For example, one recent study shows that owning a pet companion can be worth over $90k a year in terms of life satisfaction. This just proves that a fur baby is one of the best investments you can make in life!

Truly, not only do they provide companionship, affection, and serenity, but they can also be free entertainment. Just look at these critters who hid themselves in the strangest and most ridiculous places imaginable. Granted, some of them did it better than others, but let's appreciate the effort and give them all a virtual pet, shall we?

    She thinks she’s a jaguar in darkest Africa… You are passing prey. Meow!

    A pet folding themselves into a box of tissues or playing hide-and-seek behind a transparent curtain is probably just playful behavior. Nevertheless, there usually is an explanation for them doing these strange things. If they're trying to camouflage themselves into their surroundings, dogs might have one of these four intentions:

    ADVERTISEMENT
    1. They're looking for a safe space and just want to be cozy for a couple of hours;
    2. They're instinctively looking for places to hide their secret stash of snacks;
    3. They're looking for their favorite comfort object (toy, scrap of food, blanket, etc.);
    4. They need to regulate their body temperature, either to warm up or cool down.

    My Cat Is Obsessed With 2 Things: Splooting And Hiding Under The Rug. Always Discover Her "Hiding" With Just Her Feet Sticking Out... And The Rug Breathing

    Tabby cat’s legs and tail sticking out from under a patterned rug showing pets failing at hiding from their owners.

    Her roundness makes a very visible lump in the rug, and her little splooted chicken legs help too. Still, I'm always on the lookout for hidden cats whenever I'm stepping over rugs now. She's instilled a new fear into me.

    However, there can be other, more concerning reasons.

    Older dogs may retreat to their hiding place if their cognitive abilities are declining. Some dogs develop dementia and become confused about their whereabouts, get anxious, and tend to hide more often if they're feeling overwhelmed.

    When dogs get frightened, they look for a safe space to hide. If your pooch ever panicked when fireworks were popping outside, you've probably experienced them hiding under a table or something similar. Thunderstorms elicit similar fears in some dogs, too.

    Whenever I see anything about animals reacting badly to lawnmowers, vacuum cleaners, etc., I wonder what it sounds like to them. Animals have *very* different frequency responses in their hearing that humans do, and we only put effort into making the noise acceptable for us. I'd bet the high frequency sounds from a vacuum cleaner are awful for a pet.

    If there have been changes in their environment (construction, new roommates, or moving altogether), a dog might be too stressed. That's when they look for a remote hiding place. If you spend some quality time with your dog and go for plenty of walks, that might reduce the stress.

    Illnesses or injuries cause dogs to retreat, too. In this way, dogs are similar to cats, who usually hide when they're in pain or have been injured. This is an instinctual defense mechanism: animals hide away from predators when they're feeling vulnerable.

    Similar problem with my rescue. The vets have to do it and it's a multi-person operation while he wails and shouts the house down and sounds like he's being m******d. He was three when I got him and it's something he's never adapted to. Still, he doesn't need that done very often thankfully! I try and make sure we do a lot of hard-surface walking as well as the nicer fields and woods.

    Hiding is a normal behavior for pregnant cats and dogs. This is called 'nesting,' which essentially is looking for a safe space to give birth. Pets usually look for a secluded, safe space where they will be safe during their most vulnerable time. To mask their and their litter's scent, mothers also consume the afterbirth – that is an instinctual way to protect themselves from predators.

    That is a rare armored tank cat. The shell provides extra protection from nosey humans and unwanted belly rub attempts. Shell may be shed when belly rubs are desired.

    Humans aren't the only species that get anxiety. Pets get anxious too, but that often manifests itself in destructive behaviors, loud barking or meowing, but hiding can also be a symptom. When separation anxiety hits, pets especially look for comfort in things that have their owners' scent. So, they might hide under the bed, sheets, sofa, and so on.

    After bringing a new pet into your home, it's no surprise if they hide under the bed. It's especially true for smaller furry pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas. According to the experts at Oxbow Animal Health, that's because they're prey species and they're very vigilant about any threats in their environment.

    "The sound of a chair being pulled out on a tile floor may not make you duck for cover (you brave human, you), but it could very well be enough to throw off your rabbit’s entire afternoon," they claim.

    When your pet is hiding for reals, it's best not to disturb them. Of course, that's after you make sure they're not injured or feeling unwell in any other way. Sometimes, even animals want to feel unbothered, so maybe this is their version of curling up in bed and binge-watching their favorite show?

    My cats do this all the time and then if I touch their tail they get so surprised like "how did you know I was here, you must be magic!" also I don't understand why they always sit in the bathroom when I shower. I wonder if they are thinking about how silly I am for not bathing like they do, or if they are worried I might drown, or they are just feeling bad for me because of all the wet (ick). Probably they are actually just laughing at me.

    Casper’s Favorite Hiding Spot

    Small white pet peeking from kitchen cabinet door, attempting hiding but visibly spotted on wooden floor background.

    Oh yeah, we cleared out that cabinet because that’s his go-to. We now keep all the cleaners in a closet. He’s got some blankets and stuff in there. He’s a safe and happy camper.

    She Decided This Was The Best Hiding Spot From Thunder

    White dog awkwardly trying to hide in a narrow space between furniture and wall with a tiled floor nearby, pets hiding fail.

    I tried to stop her, but she finds ways to get into spaces when it thunders, even with our best efforts to keep her happy and not in small spaces. This was taken after she had done this a few times, and I realized she would be fine.

    My rescue used to scared of Thunder, I tried everything to sooth him and stop him being scared, there was only one thing that worked, our other dog who has NO fear. Last Thunder storm he was outside with the other dog barking his little head off at it, no fear.

    I had a dog (a terrier mix) who was scared of thunder. His preferred hiding place was on my lap with my arms around him. I did mind, I always liked to cuddle him. If I wasn’t home, he’d crawl under the bed.

    This is a problem that can be fixed by a knowledgeable trainer. A vet can't do much but recommend one.

    If you live in a place with a basement, it works magic. Thunder and rain aren't as loud, no big windows to see the lightning. Works great for my girl. Saved me a lot of money and investigation.

    When I was a child we used to caravan for holidays. At the time, our cavalier king Charles spaniel was scared of thunder. His favourite hiding place? The bathroom. Anyone who has spent time in a touring caravan knows the bathroom isn't the biggest place anyway - you wanted to go during a storm, you had to climb over the dog or hold it until the thunder stopped and we could coax him out again.

    Well the thunder hasn't hurt her yet, so she must be hiding in the right place. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

    My daughter has two chihuahuas that freak out when there's a thunderstorm. The vet gave her some Trazodone to give them. They still have their hidey-hole, but they are pretty zoned when they're in it.
