Not in the trade myself, but I was told this by a friend who accepted a job as a night shift guard:
As a college student, my friend accepted a gig as night watchman at an old junkyard in my city. The place was in the middle of nowhere, and most of the work was done by a couple of very ferocious guard dogs who patroled the junkyard, as sometimes people broke it to steal things like catalytic converters or copper wire. He was instructed to say in the office (a very small concrete room that only had a chair, a cot and a landline) and not to enter the yard, as the dogs could attack him as well. He was only meant to take a stroll every hour around the perimeter and call the police if he detected signs of an intruder.
He says that, during one of his patrols, he saw another man in the middle of the yard, inside the fence, but not trying to hide and just walking about. He yelled and pointed the flashlight to the man, and was surprised to see another watchman. He described him as an elderly, gray-haired man wearing an old overcoat, and was petting the dogs.
My friend said that the man just waved at him and turned out, dissappearing behind a pile of junk cars. He says that it seemed odd to him the watchman was not carrying a flashlight, but dismissed it as the dogs clearly knew him.
In the morning, my friend asked the day shift guard about the "other watchman", but the guard told him that there was none, and proceeded to yell at him saying that he was probably fooled by a thief. My friend then told the guard that the other watchman was petting the dogs, to which the guard just went silent and asked my friend to describe the man.
Turned out that, before my friend took over the job, there had been an old man in that post, and that the dogs originally had belonged to him. The man had died on a winter night the previous year, apparently from carbon monoxide poisoning, when he had fallen asleep at his office with a heater on.
Needless to say, my friend resigned that very day.
Worked the Hotel Night Shift. Not a large place, 60 rooms but generally 1/2 full. The one totally handicapped room, roll-in shower, extra features was next to the Lobby.
The room was usually vacant and one vacant night at round 2am the Television turned on. I noticed the TV on when I was walking the property. I checked through the window (curtains open in vacant rooms), no one there so I went in, called out, checked the washroom, nothing. Turned off the TV and went about my night.
As a mention, this room always gave me a creepy feeling. I chalked it up to not being used. It was like the air in the room was stale, flat, and I really did feel like I was being watched. I was not a fan of that room.
Next night same thing, TV turned on, on its own. Then third night, all was good in the room. The TV did not turn on. Few nights later, TV turns on again, around 2am This went on for a few weeks. Turning on a few nights, then not for a few nights and the time started to change, sometimes turning on as late, or early, as 2:30am.
We had a few Guests check into the room, no mention of the TV. Guests check out, TV starts up again.
I went through all the Television settings and found nothing amiss. All of our Remotes were Universal with Programming Remotes locked in the Office.
Just like one day it started, one day it stopped and never started up again.
Never figured out what or why but I always felt creepy when I looked at that room door and I tried to not rent it unless totally necessary.
Not Me, But, My friends' Dad works in the security field and when he took up a job in the Himalayan mountains. So, he said when he used to work there, this guy would always come in and give him some food, usually chicken and brown rice or Just some rigatoni with garlic and sausage. The guy would always come around every 2 days, one day the guy was nowhere to be seen, but someone else walked in shivering cold, he noticed a cut on there side and helped them out. But after he helped them the old man said that he shall be spared for saving and doing good. He was really confused but then a worker came in and said that everyone in the industry along with their wives' were struck with a disease except his family. Needless to say the Police were suspicious, but the old man never came anymore. He retired 4 years ago.
