I've long thought the US should get rid of these congressional districts altogether.

Possibly it used to be a link between the Congress-person elected and a locatable group of electors, who would then have someone to go to if they needed help. But now, it's just a fix and everyone knows it. The only way forward IMHO would be to have each elector have five votes (if their state had 5 congress-people) and count them all together . But who will allow that?

Possibly the hidden costs of things the government won't do, is adding up to an equally hidden tax we just can't afford?

Even without the 2nd amendment, it would be amazingly difficult to wean the nation off its offensive toys. They work fine - as compensation for those with small personal development, hem hem - and the rest of them are sold on fear "You need this because everyone else has one". Find me a way of getting nations to give up their nuclear weapons (especially after what happened to Ukraine when it did that) and I'll show you a way of getting people to give up their guns.

When you've got sickening amounts of wealth, how else to show it off? OK, maybe a superyacht or two - but aren't they just mobile floating homes? Solve the underlying problem first. Tax the rich.

Tragedy of the Commons - as in. "why should I give up my SUV until that other guy gives up his first?" A corollary of the basic motto of politics - "make someone else do it, not me". When sea level rises enough to flood the subways of the coastal cities - making them uninhabitable - we'll probably learn. But don't expect much change in behaviour from the inland towns, even then. "Someone Else's Problem", I guess.

Smoking. It's strange that we all know how dangerous it is not, just to the people who smoke, but the all the people around them through passive smoking. I have a friend who has COPD and has to wear an oxygen tank all the time because he can't breathe on his own, He never smoked a day in his life, he just soaked up all the smoke from people's cigerettes from when he was playing in smokey venues when he was making a living in the 70s 80s and 90s. I know it's banned indoors and in cars as well, especially around children, but making it illegal would save so many lives. It will probably never happen though due to the amount of money the governments make from taxing cigerettes, vapes etc.

I have severe COPD and Stage IV metastatic lung cancer at 73 years old from smoking. If this post stops one person from continuing to smoke, then my illnesses would not be in vain. For the love of God, put those cigarettes down for good!

When my husband and I started dating, his ex took him to one side. She explained that if the new relationship was going to work, he'd need to give up cigarettes. (I'm asthmatic.) He took her advice, and we've been married for over 30 years.

Underlying problem here is that companies can - and do - put financial pressure on elected representatives. Break that loop and we might have a chance.

Yes indeed, the way forward here is to find the way it gets into us and break that loop. Caution - may require Science.

Freedom of thought. We will all learn Newspeak and literally will no longer be able to articulate or even comprehend opposing the totalitarian state in any way, no matter how seemingly insignificant.

It's possible but IMHO unlikely. People lived under totalitarian leaderships for decades ( see East Germany) and never forgot the ability to oppose them. Whereas "freedom of speech = freedom to spread lies about minorities" has led to the death of more than one person. A balance is needed, but I wouldn't call myself able to find that balance.

I am not saying this is a good thing or that I want it, just that it is dangerous and many people are against it in fundamentalist countries such as the USA.

Agreed - there is a daily growing list of things we aren't allowed to say, and would be shouted down , reviled and scapegoated if we tried. It's a sort of growing reverse of the "Overton window". The exact details depend on which silo you inhabit - there is more than one sort of totalitarian state to fight here - but the way back will be to restore decency, as it was with McCarthy when Joseph Welch asked his famous question. And decency involves allowing others to think in different way s to the ones we profess.

An admirable aim, but we have no gun to shoot here. I suspect that the legal definition of a "total c*nt" might be difficult, to start with. Sometimes we get the politicians we deserve, especially if we allow slogans instead of actual thinking to dominate our minds.

They do. There are strict guidelines across the world. The problem is when people retro-fit to vehicles not equipped with the required self-levelling kit, which is itself already illegal.

Actually I believe that homework - I presume you mean school homework ? - is as essential as the repeated drills that football teams practice after a new play is put in their book. You learn a thing, not by one demonstration, but by repeated practice. Research the "10 000 hours" rule for skills development, and the repeated scales practised by musicians. "There is no royal road to Geometry" - or most other abilities. Do. The. Work.

Gender affirming surgery is fantastic, and should be made available to all adults who want it. Along with other forms of gender affirming care it has a very low regret rate, far lower than many other forms of care.
