Anyone who has ever loved a dog knows that they're never really "just a pet." They become part of the family, filling our days with little routines, unconditional love, and countless memories. And when the time comes to say goodbye, even the smallest things- an empty bed, a leash hanging by the door, or a favorite spot on the couch- can become painful reminders of someone who's no longer there.

Author and artist SelfTrue Journey captures these heartbreaking feelings through a series of touching illustrations about the grief of losing a beloved dog. Her work explores the powerful bond between people and their four-legged companions, as well as the memories and emotions that remain after they're gone. We've previously featured her illustrations about how dogs experience losing their humans, but this time, she focuses on the other side of that heartbreak.

Scroll down to explore these emotional illustrations, and let us know if any of them remind you of a special furry friend. You might want to keep a few tissues nearby.

True words. I've come to know that grief is the price we pay for love. The deeper the love, the more shattering the grief. But it's a price I willingly pay.

I still cry over a dog I lost 65 years ago, and I've had many, many other dogs since.
