Surprises always seem to make life better and can bring a lot of joy to someone’s day. But there definitely are awkward surprises that should be thought through a bit, maybe by running it past someone or thinking it over after a night’s rest. Surprising your partner at work is one of those things that can either have a huge payoff or go completely wrong.

One guy found this out in the most amusing way when he visited his partner at work. He told netizens how that simple decision caused quite a bit of chaos at his girlfriend’s workplace. Bored Panda reached out to the author of this post, u/elegantshoshon, to get his perspective on the comical situation that unfolded.

When his girlfriend arrived, she cleared up the matter, and later told him that his dressing sense and resting jerkface could have made people think he was a corporate rep there to fire them

The original poster (OP) had a day off from work and decided to surprise his girlfriend and take her out to lunch. She had let him know before that he was free to visit her any time and that it would not be a problem. Unfortunately, OP didn’t foresee that he would be stopped almost immediately when he visited. Even after letting the card-checker know who he was looking for, she radioed management to come right away.

When the manager came and they tried to get in touch with the man’s girlfriend, he could hear all the employees speaking about him. They were wondering who he was and whether he was an auditor. When his girlfriend finally arrived, she cleared up the matter for him.

She told him that his dressing sense and politeness could be confused for a corporate rep and that people would think he was there to fire them. The author had mentioned in the comments that when he visited her workplace, he was wearing a pink and black striped polo shirt, a grey pea coat, and matching grey jeans.

His girlfriend also said that his facial expressions could have played a part in the fiasco. When we reached out to the author of the post, this is what he had to share about the incident, “I was surprised that the way I carried myself for a rather ordinary circumstance led to such a debacle. Learning that my resting face is more or less a scowl had me a bit self-conscious, but ultimately, I can see what they mean.”

OP also provided us with a bit more context on the situation, saying: “It’s a story we still chuckle about days later. My girlfriend loves her job and her coworkers. She’s been with this particular company for 17 years and wouldn’t leave for anything. Now we have an amusing story to tell our friends and family.

“She also has gotten teased by her colleagues as to when her corporate/ auditor boyfriend is visiting again so they can be prepared. Many of her colleagues and bosses wanted to know who I was and were delighted for her. Many asked what I do for a living and were surprised that I run an automotive repair shop,” he said.

All’s well that ends well. Luckily enough for the woman’s coworkers, OP wasn’t an auditor, just a man with a good sense of style and a serious face. Commenters found the whole situation hilarious, and the post received 21k upvotes and over 800 comments with some suggestions on how to prank the employees next time. What do you think the author should do when he visits his girlfriend’s workplace next time? If you have any hilarious suggestions, let us know in the comments.

Netizens were in stitches after learning about the situation, some provided fun tips to freak the employees out again on his next visit, while others shared similar experiences they had

This is crazy. Before I retired, my husband came to pick me up many times for lunch if he was around my office. He was upper management (before he retired too); he always wore a suit or a uniform. Even if we changed the receptionist a lot, there was no panic to be done.

Not sure his idea to smile more next time would help: If anything, a mild knowing smile and occasional nod will freak them out far more.

When I did this - I was also carrying a single long stemmed red rose. I knew the Big Boss, which helped, though he was skeptical when I said "I'm smitten with one of your employees." When he learned who, though- "Oh! Yeah, she's a very nice woman... I'll help you out..."

The rose is the relevant bit - Universally Recognized Warning: Harmless Fool Here. :-) Nobody likely to mistake you for anyone official or nefarious. Always good to make that clear.
