This Maine Coon Cat Is So Big Many People Think That It’s A Dog At First

Interview With Owner

It doesn’t take much effort for cats to win people’s hearts and go viral on the internet. Today, there are many pet videos or images all over the web. However, some animals end up standing out because of their peculiar and unique characteristics, as well as the creativity and care of their owners.

This is the case with a cat named Kefir who lives with its owner Yuliya Minina in Stary Oskol, Russia. It didn’t take too long for the cat to stick out because of its enormous size. The owner told Bored Panda that Kefir is 1 year and 9 months old now and weighs around 26.5 pounds. Even though the cat is huge already, Yuliya expects it to grow a bit more. “It’s normal for Maine Coons to keep growing up until they are 3 years old.”

“It’s funny how others react when they see the cat because it is huge. Many people think that it’s a dog at first.”

The owner shared that they got Kefir from a cattery. They loved that the cat’s fur was so beautiful and white. That’s where the name, which means dairy drink, came from. Kefir immediately refused to eat dry cat food and started being fed only meat and natural feed.

The Maine Coon cat weighs 26.5 pounds and is expected to grow even bigger, which is one of the characteristics of this breed

According to the owner, Yuliya, Kefir is a gentle cat and likes eating natural feed

Yuliya revealed that the only drawback to Kefir’s maintenance is the large amount of wool that the cat leaves around the house. However, it is treated like a true family member and always sits together with Yuliya and her family by the table when they’re dining.

Yuliya added that Kefir has developed a habit to jump on her at night when she sleeps. “He didn’t do that when he was smaller and it wouldn’t be that inconvenient, but now the cat became very big and heavy. It’s not that easy to sleep like that.”

“It’s funny how others react when they see the cat because it is huge. Many people think that it’s a dog at first”

“But in general, this is a super-smart cat. It weirdly can feel the general mood in the house. Kefir doesn’t meow, doesn’t yell, and doesn’t harm the furniture. A truly perfect cat.”

For those who might have doubts wether these are real photos of the cat, Yuliya assures that she didn’t use Photoshop.

I was just startled at the picture where he's shaved! I have a Main C**n Ragdoll cross and was told that since they have double coats, shaving them down can ruin their fur texture and in worst case scenarios can cause alopecia. I simply brush ours every 2/3 days, have a de-matting blade just in case and remove all his undercoat every 3 months or so. Since I've done this since he was a kitten too he now looooooves being brushed which makes the whole process very easy. Makes me super sad to see such a majestic cat be shaved down.

Most Maine Coons that I've seen also love water, drinking straight from the faucet and playing in it. Some of them swim. I had a 1/4 MC and he was so different from our white Manx but they were both very different than the average domestic cat and they were both rescues. We had them both until they passed away at 13 and 14 years old. The Manx would sit by my oldest daughter at dinner time and if he wanted her food he'd wait for her to get a bite on her fork and very nimbly and quickly swipe it without dropping a crumb. His favorite was grilled salmon. She knew if he was sitting very close when she had food that he fully intended to steal it from her. Our MC, Thai, was happy to wait until we were done and have some salmon and they'd often get some chicken and rice made especially for them. They didn't care for many of the dry foods and there wasn't the variety of healthy pet foods that we have now. So I would often make them up unseasoned meals for them to have and they loved them.

I believe the term is Photo Shopped. Notice the size of the cat changes between photos.? Ie: there's a Huge difference between the first cat and the one sitting at the end of the bath? Also they're very careful to not take too many shots with people so you can't really tell Comparative Size. Seen Lot's of different cats incl Maine C**n and Sorry but l DON'T think so. Would be Nice though if it were real!

Food for thought- grain-free diets cause urinary crystals in felines and cardiomyopathy in dogs. We want longevity in our animals, feeding a good diet is HUGE! Maine Coons also have horrible dental disease- start brushing their teeth early so they are used to it! He’s absolutely GORGEOUS!!

I'm sorry but your beautiful cat is not as big as he's seems in a few of your pictures. I've been a Maine c**n owner & breeder for 20+ years & yes they do grow very big. My biggest boy is Zeus he's 25lbs & super sweet & the king of the house who teaches his other brothers how to be sweet & gentle with each other. You must be a tiny lady so he seems bigger than what he actually is. We have 14 cats 8 are full Maine c**n 4 are half Himalayan half Maine c**n & 2 half Himalayan. Yes most of them are very big & still growing. Your cat is gorgeous but I'd like to see some other pictures of him next to things that we all have that are the same size.

I don't like cats at ALL but, Kefir is truly AMAZING! I never knew that there were breeds of cats that truly got that big! And, just for everyone's information...saying Maine C**n is not racist, it's the name of the breed of cat! I didn't even think anything of the name until people started hiding the o's and pointing it out. That's the problem nowaday...people are so focused on finding something to bitch about and falsely accuse people that everything anyone says is scrutinized and it's ridiculous and disappointing that our world has come to this nonsense! Stop looking for something that's not there and go on with life as we has for over 150 years since 1863 when slavery was abolished! Don't repeat history and past. Leave it in the past where it is and should be and live life now people!

Wow, reaching 26.5 pounds at that early age is remarkable. MC’s generally max out by around 5 years. This will be interesting.

My Maine Cооn weighs 22 pounds but he's 9 years old. This massive fluffball is so large at such a young age. I wonder how big he'll grow eventually? 🤔

Thanks for this info, Gretchen. I would have thought most grains not good for cats, but a couple would be natural to their diet.

Makes my 22lb Tuxedo "Miles" (after Miles Davis, a "cool Cat") look like a kitten, and I assure you, Miles is NOT a kitten. His paw stretched out, is as big as the palm of my hand. This guy though, he is humongous.
