Lock your doors. Close your windows at night. Pull the curtains shut, and don’t leave any keys hidden in obvious places like under the mat.
Some security measures are just common sense. And although most of us have, thankfully, never experienced a break-in or a home invasion, you can never predict when one will happen. One moment you're coming home refreshed from a week on a Hawaiian beach, and the next, you're realizing that all of your personal belongings are out of place and some are even missing. My parents used to warn me to never even recycle the boxes of large, expensive purchases like televisions or computers outside of my home, and to never broadcast to acquaintances when I was going to be out of town traveling. Posting about a trip on social media was also a huge no-no until we were back in the safety of our humble abode.
Some people are more cautious than others when it comes to their security systems, but one thing’s for sure: a paper lock or a keypad that states the code on it are not going to keep anyone out. We’ve compiled some of the most hilarious examples of security fails from around the world and gathered them down below, so you all can enjoy these pathetic excuses for “security measures”. Be sure to upvote the pictures that you find most hilarious, and then let us know in the comments what the most ridiculous excuse you’ve ever seen for a security precaution was. Farmers In South Africa Are Getting Serious About Security
I don't think it's a fail? Is it not rather a sign with threatening aura? Like, the owners will notify next of kin when the thief is injured or dead?
Also it's not very original. I've seen lots of signs that say something sort of like this. Things like we are running out of places to hide the bodies, survivers will be shot again, etc.
Load More Replies...It's basically saying, you're gonna die, so carry ID so we can inform your family.
It's so odd and interesting how casual and nonchalant some folks are about killing human beings. I'd go as far to say some are even enthusiastic about it. So much so that actual signs are made to threaten and express just how much they are willing to harm or kill another person. I don't know, it's just something I've noticed. The fascination folks have with violence. It seems to have a strong hold on a lot of us. Maybe to strong and we don't even realize it.
This is an aspect of “talk softly but carry a big stick”. If you don’t *want* to commit violence upon someone then making your intention, ability, and willingness to do so is an extremely effective deterrent. If a criminal sees two similar houses, one has a funny mat along the “welcome if you come carrying wine or chocolate” or “we charge $10 to listen to your sales pitch” and the other has a sign along the lines of “carry ID so we can notify next of kin” or “trespassers will be shot on sight” even someone with the average intelligence of a violent criminal will be far less likely to try to break into the “violent” house. People who portray violence as a real possibility are a lot less likely to be victims than those seen as incapable or rejecting of violence.
Load More Replies...How is this "not very well thought out"? It's a clear message, but BP authors apparently didn't get it?
You might not be too concerned about taking security precautions in your home if you believe you live in a safe area or you don’t think you own anything worth stealing, but you can really never predict when someone will be in the market for a free computer or when a drunk person will accidentally try to get into your apartment thinking it’s their own. Yes, I have had that happen. And while I cannot be 100% sure that they were drunk, it was certainly frightening knowing that if the door had been unlocked, they would have wandered right in.
Despite all that we know about how easy it is to simply lock the front door or install a fence around our yards, some people just hope for the best. A sign stating, “Please, do not enter” or a gate that can easily be climbed or walked around may seem smart to those of us who would never dream of trespassing. But unfortunately, others take those faulty security measures as invitations to go right in. If there is not enough infrastructure in place to make it impossible to get in, it must be open to the public!
When Your Security Gate Is A Ladder
There’s a building near me with a seven-foot-tall security gate you need a code to unlock, but the fence is only four feet tall so you can just reach over and open the door from the other side. Security gates aren’t cheap! Who took this from inception to completion and told themselves, “Another job well done!”
same as this one it's like they're daring you to do it
Load More Replies...It doesn't really matter when your neighbor gives out the code to every man she meets.
I lived at a place you had to have a card. They wouldn't give us the key code, said it wouldn't be secure. We eventually got the overide security code from the pizza guy. Yes, he got it from the office!

Load More Replies...No "the ticket" didn't, this camera is very obviously hollow, upside-down, facing the wall, not wired to anything, and cable-tied in place to be a bird house.
I do see that but I don’t think that is what you see. That came out to be a little rude so next time just please rethink what you are typing so it doesn’t seem too rude. I love your name btw!
Load More Replies...Of course, it is not a requirement to have a security camera at your front door and an alarm that will blare through the neighborhood if you don’t type in a code within 30 seconds of entering your home. But they certainly can help deter intruders or help catch someone who has invaded your property. Now, let me be clear, I'm not a proponent of using these systems to spy on neighbors or share footage of people passing by on social media. But if the video feed is just to check up on your house when you are out of town or when you hear suspicious noises, it may help you sleep better at night.
According to US News, home security systems are a great idea for several reasons: they provide protection, they deter burglars, they provide peace of mind, they are convenient and can save energy, and they can reduce your home insurance premiums. And while you might be concerned about the installation cost or upkeep of these systems, you may be interested to know that the FBI reported that the average burglary in the United States in 2019 ended up costing $2,661 per victim. If you have a security system in place to prevent your home from falling prey to thieves, you might actually be saving money.

That IS an installation. It’s to remind people they’re watching. The real cameras are dome cameras.
Security contractor at JFK found they hadn't spent the whole budget. Rectified that without delay.
Hey Bob, you have pole 96 as your assignment tonight. Make sure you write a report on any suspicious activity you see. Bob has Marty Feldman eyes at the end of his shift from trying to follow the monitor for all the cameras!
Should have a camera watching the other cameras - Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
And if you’re wondering whether security systems actually deter anyone from breaking in, I can tell you that they do. One study conducted by Professor Joe Kuhns at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte found that most break-ins are rather spontaneous, with almost 60% of burglars admitting that they did not plan their invasions more than 24 hours in advance. 83% of these attempted thieves also scoped out places for any sights of alarms first, and over half of them said they would move on if they saw an alarm.
Nothing beats peace of mind, as well. Knowing that you can hop on an app on your phone and view your front porch and/or various parts of your home at any moment can just make you feel more calm when you are away on holiday or out late at night. Plus, this way you don’t need to choose between bothering a neighbor or being plagued with anxiety if you get the feeling something might be off.

1234? That's the kind of code an idiot would have on his luggage!
Load More Replies...Exactly what I was thinking. I’m pretending this is actually a coercion code, it sets off a silent alarm while granting entry to thieves, then locking the door behind them so they can’t get back out.
Load More Replies..."But of course, Stanley would have no way of knowing that the code was 3944."
349? 943? 439? 493? .... I'm stumped it could literally be anything at this point.
Imagine if the password isn't 3944. Like, it is 9943 or whatever the combination could be. It would be the biggest troll ever.
It would, but there really aren't that many combinations of 3,4 and 9 to try, so it wouldn't take a determined thief very long to work it out.
Load More Replies...I think this might be in a dementia ward. They generally put the code right next to the keypad and the patients aren't able to use it. Sad, but true.

Home security systems have also become quite technologically advanced over the years. They can even help you reduce your energy consumption by giving homeowners remote access to their thermostats and light switches. For example, when you are out of town for a week, you can turn off your heater and/or air conditioner, as well as any lights that are set to turn on at certain times. And if you are looking to cut down on your home insurance costs, most companies offer discounts between 5%-20% for individuals who have security systems installed. Plus, as US News notes, “If you have cameras for video surveillance, video footage can help when it comes to filing insurance claims.”
This Bear Gets It
See, the sign is meant to keep out a specific bear. The forbidden bear is not the one in the dumpster. The one in the dumpster is, in fact, a guard looking out for the bear on the sign, ready to keep him out of the dumpster. And he's having a snack on the job.
It’s pure stupidity in putting up a sign saying ’ No bears allowed in dumpster, since bears won’t get it🫥
Let's Just Mount This Here For Security
I lived in a place that had a door just like this and it was handier than you'd think. With a curtain over the door I could still peer out to find the Jehovah's or my landlord on the porch without giving away that I was home.
If there's blinds or curtains it would still make sense (looking out w/o being able to be seen moving the blinds). Or the glass panel was added later?
I never understood windows in doors or on sides of door, all somebody has to do is break the glass in region and unlatched the door🤨

Load More Replies...When it comes to what to look for in a home security system, cost is obviously a factor that homeowners need to consider. But if you can afford it, US News recommends having a system that is professionally monitored. This means that even if you are not paying attention to your surveillance footage, someone is and can alert you or the police immediately when there are issues. “Consider if you are on vacation in another part of the country…do you call 911 in Los Angeles for something happening at your home in Atlanta?” says Paul Rothman, editor-in-chief of Security Business magazine. “Professional monitoring takes the onus off the consumer and puts response procedures into the hands of trained professionals.”

Just to stop losing them I reckon, I have a thing about losing scissors and sellotape, they are never where they should be.
The less important features that you can skip when installing home security are anything that you know you won’t use. Features that are more about convenience than protection, like having voice control lights, are probably not a requirement for you. Having a doorbell with a video camera is also an exciting feature, but it can be much more expensive than simply installing a camera somewhere above or near your front door. It will do the exact same job; it’s just a little bit less flashy.

Someone Likes To Live Dangerously
Before I'd scrolled far enough I thought "what's so dangerous about that? Ooohhhh..."
The irony of installing a home security system is that is connected to Wi-Fi is that it creates a whole separate security concern. Many homeowners wonder if they will become victims to hackers or if their video footage will be seen by unauthorized viewers. “Two of the most vulnerable elements in a security system are network or internet-connected security cameras and the Wi-Fi router itself, as they are most often the target of hackers,” Paul Rothman says. It is not the actual hardware that gets hacked, but rather the software, which can allow hackers to access the entire network. “The most important step is changing the default security settings on the equipment itself, including admin login information that is often publicly available and leveraged by hackers,” Rothman says.

Security Is Important Here
Didn't know that! Do you know why? Like is it just to keep things from looking "trashy"- hehe. But really I'm curious because here where I live people leave their bins outside anywhere . Sometimes don't even bother taking them from the curb.
Load More Replies...Maybe code enforcement requires them to "hide the bins" from street view? Our city wants us to pretend like we don't have trash.
In Germany it's for keeping people from putting their trash in your bin. You need to pay if you need a bigger bin.
This ain't for security either. This is probably from a neighborhood that either has an HOA or lives in a country with town rules where your trash cans can't be visible from the street. It also prevents people from dumping large objects in other peoples trash. Or atleast makes it harder & prevents cans from being easily stolen.
This is an experiment to accelerate natural selection. It's specifically designed to keep out the dumb raccoons allowing only the very smart raccoons to feed thereby increasing intelligence in the local raccoon population until we end up in a Planet of the Raccoons type situation.
Homeowners should also be wary of systems that seem too good to be true. “If the price is really low on a piece of hardware, it’s often a case of giving you a low price in return for taking your data,” says Mitch Klein, executive director of the Z-Wave Alliance. The data can be valuable to burglars or companies who want to market goods and services to you. We’ve seen it countless times with curated Instagram, Facebook and Youtube ads, but even our security systems can lead to the same effect. It’s important to always carefully read a company’s Terms of Use, particularly the section on data privacy, to know exactly where your data is going and why.

If you are looking to decrease your home’s risk of an invasion but you simply don’t have the resources to install a complex security system, have no fear. There are other methods you can take to deter intruders. “The most important criteria in deterring the burglars we surveyed were alarm systems, dogs, and indications of people inside. Lights were also an important indicator,” says Professor Joe Kuhns. “Burglars don't want to have a conversation. Anything you can do to create a perception that the home is occupied and active is helpful." And if you’re on vacation, it’s helpful to have a neighbor or friend picking up your mail and newspapers. Those can be easy giveaways that no one is home if they start piling up.

It's exactly the point. The buttons are too high to reach, and the code is hard to read for a small child. Stops them going AWOL.
Load More Replies...It might be to prevent children accessing a specific part of the daycare, such as the admin/office or kitchen, but allowing parents to enter. Some daycare centres in NZ have interconnected rooms for the different age groups but have another room, such as a kitchen, which isn't safe for children to access. Or it could be the exit to the carpark. Again - prevention is for the children, not the adults.

Actually it isn't a car but a 4 wheel moped. You do not need a car drivers license, insurance is cheap and you don't pay road taxes. They do get stolen often though. Or at least it makes it to the newspapers, because there is a heartbreaking story behind it. Owners are poor and often disabled.

Unfortunately as with everything, they've Re-Released Polaroid cameras, and several other types of instant cameras, to capitalise on the fact that the younger generation have pretty much only had digital versions of photos their entire lives; so a physical version becomes a novelty.

Okay wait but is this secretly smart or am I not so secretly dumb?? Would the sandals prevent the bike from riding away properly?
Yes, exactly--it wouldn't stop a determined thief, but it will stop a casual or lazy one, since they can't just hop on and ride away.
Load More Replies...For those of you who don't get it... In Indian culture, you need to remove your footwear before entering most places... Temples, Church, Offices, etc... This lock is not to protect the cycle, it's to protect the footwear from being stolen. 😄
In India, you have to remove your footwear when you enter a place of worship or residential place. This is a good idea as you wont be able to pedal away. the lock will prevent the wheel from spinning, as a bonus it also protects the sandals
Wouldn't the lock cord go up when the wheel turned thus preventing it from making a compete rotation? It would also catch on the wires on the sides of the metal thing with the 2 red dots. What is that? A luggage rack? Lol lol
If you live in a culture where you must remove your shoes before entering a home or church this makes total sense. A thief can't ride the bike away AND your good slippers don't get stolen.

Lax Security
Who the hell is stealing stool softeners and laxatives? Grandma? Just let her have the damn things! Oh, wait, I guess they technically did 🤣
Opioid addicts suffering from constipation. No seriously. But this isn't to prevent theft, it's intended to prevent smash and grab clothesline into cart...think of the $950 target of Prop 47 in California.

Security In Walmart Is Top Notch
Looking at the size of the gap you can probably just reach your hand in and take it out
Probably just enough to stop the shop lifters from sweeping the entire shelf's content into their bags and making a run out the door.
Oh man they had a security lock on a $2 nail file last time i went. They go way overboard at Walmart; it's sad
I was just thinking, that mascara is $3-4... does it really need that kind of security???

If you look at the left of the picture you can see the cord from the next one along, showing two security cords, one for the typecover one for the surface. I'm pretty sure you just can't see the one for the surface that's been picked up because it's attached to the back of it and and the wrong angle.
The cord for the screen is right there. It’s the unplugged black cord

Redneck Car Security
Nope. This is intended to keep the door just latched. Clown probably holds it closed when he drives. OP Panda missed the type of stupidity which was applied to this solution.
It's to keep the door shut. In some US states, this would pass inspection, unfortunately.
It's not for security. That's to keep the door closed cause it's broken. 😂
I’m seriously surprised at how few people understand this

Security Is Up
Reminds me when the owner at Londlozi Game reserve had us install security fence around one of the lodges, only two electrified wires at a height of 1.8m high, thought it weird until he said he only wants to keep the elephants out and make them stop emptying the swimming pool

One can just jump over the counter to get to the kitchen.

Our University Has The Best Security System
It’s great security when the hall is really crowded. It weeds the nuts out (get it - cuz it’s at crotch level and men and their prized possessions and such?).
It's also sideways, facing the wrong angle to turn for passerbys, so they will walk right straight into it rather than accidentally push it 😂

Not to be a smart a*s, but if the camera records me approaching it and then I turn it off, this will be evidence that I was up to something, right?
It looks as though you could come from the right and bend down to unplug it without being on camera.

Happens in the Netherlands quite often. They see locked bikes as a mix and match system. From I bike with the chain lock only through the front wheel, you steel the rest of the bike. And you complete the bike again by steeling a front wheel from a bike that has the chain lock through the frame.

Load More Replies...In David Attenborough voice: Here we see the female security camera, carrying her baby on her back. The females carry their young like this, teaching them the ways of surveillance, until they're ready to go out on their own. Males of this species generally don't take part in the rearing of their offspring, & typically spend much of their time staring at walls. Security cameras tend to be sleek, small, & cute, when young, but mature into clunky, boxy, rather ugly adults. They often have symbiotic relationships with other species, such as sparrows. They will provide them shelter, & in return, they birds provide the cameras with protection from predators, such as security guards, who would use them as working animals, often driving them to complete exhaustion before throwing them away like obsolete trash. Some have bright plumage, like glowing lights. But most are rather dull & quiet, & they use this camouflage to sneak up on & ambush their prey, the favorite of which is the common thief.
Their numbers are thriving. However, the Security Camera is, sadly, often a very underappreciated species.
