A new trend continues to sweep the internet — people are editing dad jokes onto the iconic Captain America elevator scene and making us laugh with their cheesy puns. The Captain America Elevator meme with Chris Evans started popping up and going viral in February 2020, and now there are more and more posts of them each day. There’s a bit of a backstory involving the four stills used for the joke, so if you haven’t seen the Captain America or the Avengers movies, beware of minor spoilers!

The stills used for the meme template come from two Marvel movies — Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). In Winter Soldier, Captain America takes on a bunch of Hydra soldiers in an elevator in one of the standout fight scenes in the movie. But when Cap goes back in time in Endgame and the scene happens again, he instead whispers “Hail Hydra” to Jasper Sitwell to avoid the fight altogether.
